FORM FACTS

Rare Insight came from last to win the G2 Stan Fox Stks, the John Hawkes-trained filly emulating her stablemate Lonhro who won the Stan Fox  last year before his stunning Caulfield Guineas win. Shame (1995) & Toltrice (1972) are previous Hawkes-trained winners of this race. Golden Slipper runner-up Victory Vein couldn’t quite capture the Princess Series bonus in Sydney, her Flight Stakes second to Royal Purler following a treble of   feature wins, her form arguably superior to other Sydney-based winners of this event in the nineties. Royal Purler’s third dam Princess Talaria took the 1977 edition of this race while the Manifold winner Coupe’s grand-dam Spirit of Kingston was third in this race in 1984 before taking the VRC Oaks later in the Spring. The Manifold and the Tranquil Star (now the Jumeirah) are established as the best form lead-ups to the 1000 Guineas, Lashed, Macedon Lady & Fuji Dancer all proving competitive in those races. Hall of Fame trainer Bart Cummings has notched 4 wins and 4 placings in the last 13 runnings of this race, his Danehill filly Make Me Strong filling the same spot (4th) in the Manifold as Magical Miss did last year prior to her 1000 Guineas victory.

Top Class Field for Moe Cup

Thursday’s prestigious $101,50 Carlton Drought Moe Cup has attracted a first class field and leading metropolitan trainer, Tony Noonan looks set to play a leading hand in the race with three possible runners.

Noonan, who has nominated Yammer, Paestum and Bellonic said this week "at this stage we’re looking at running all three, but a bit will depend on the weather".

"Ideally we’re probably looking for a softer track for two of them," he added.

Those two looking for the sting out of the ground would be Yammer and Bellonic, who have very impressive records on rain affected going. Yammer is the winner of 12 races and over $500,000.

Paestum has the amazing record of 23 placings from 26 starts and will be nearing peak fitness after four runs from a spell.

Mick Price is another looking for the sting out of the ground with Skinjite, which is knocking on the door with recent placings at Moe and Flemington.

"Yes he’ll run and Vlad Duric will take the ride. I was happy with the run under 58 kilos last start (Skinjite drops to 55 Thursday) and a little bit of rain will improve his chances," Price said.

Skinjite meets Teerex four kilos better off for a last start 1.8 length second to that horse at Flemington.

Trainer David Noonan has had long range plans to run Teerex in the Moe Cup and he is in with a strong chance. It took him a long time to get a run at Flemington, but when he did the race was over in a flash.

David Hall looks set to play a leading hand after nominating Pentastic and Aka Bilk.

"Unless there’s a big change of plans Pentastic won’t be running, but we certainly plan to run Aka Bilk," said stable racing manager, Annie Varsallo.

Aka Bilk was a last start Moonee Valley winner, but has not won over more than 1600 metres so the 2050 metres of the Moe Cup could test him.

Thursday’s big race will have a distinct Melbourne Cup flavor with Oxford Dollar and Big Pat, both Melbourne Cup favorites of recent years, in the field.

Big Pat’s trainer is former Sale resident, Peter Tulloch and the stable said this week that given a firm track he will run, while William Smart has confirmed his intention to start Oxford Dollar, a former Bart Cummings galloper. A point worth noting is that the stable paid the $3,000 late entry fee to get the horse into Thursday’s field after a strong eighth in the Cranbourne Cup.

Winner of the Group One, South Australian Derby, Big Pat has mixed it with the best company for most of his career and last Monday ran in the Group One Metropolitan Handicap in at Randwick, finishing a handy sixth, less than five lengths from the winner.

James Riley rates his mare Kabila chance on Thursday.

"She’s getting on in age, but she’s a very honest mare and the tight Moe track should suit her. We are expecting a forward showing," he said.

Cliff Brown indicated this week he would not start The A Train, but was hoping to get Dark Wine into the field.

A dual Moonee Valley winner (including last start), Dark Wine is given a good chance by Brown.

"We’ll definitely accept and if she can get into the field we’ll definitely come. If she does sneak in, I give her a real lightweight chance," he said.

The smokey in the field looks to be Zvezda, a Kiwi invader that will have its first start at Moe if he runs.

Zvezda is winner of six of his 10 starts including two minor placings and has handled all types of going. If this horse runs, put a big watch on him as he’s obviously above average and is in Australia for a share of the spring spoils.

Others that look to have a chance on Thursday are The Almighty One in the hands of the astute John Wheeler and Pat Hyland’s Southern Crown.

The Almighty One caught the eye with a strong sixth in last week’s Cranbourne Cup, while Southern Crown has been in the placings in five out its past six runs around this distance range.

There are clearly many chances on Thursday, but I have decided on Paestum from Teerex and The Almighty One, with a big watch on Zvezda if he runs.

It will be a great day of racing at Moe, perhaps Gippsland’s premier race day and the quality of racing doesn’t come any better in the country.

Race 2 - GEORGE 2000 HOTEL & CAFE FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE (1) - 1600 metres:

On arrival at the barrier "Cresatate" slipped over. The mare then galloped for some distance riderless until being caught near the mounting yard. To avoid an unnecessary delay the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Cresatate" at 1.07 p.m.

Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies wagered on "Cresatate" be refunded, and all successful bets on horses prior to the time of withdrawal of "Cresatate" be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Three cents; Place Bets: Four cents; Winning Concession Bets: Three cents, and Doubles Bets: Three cents. All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal were ordered to be paid at face value of ticket.

"Jugah Tone" jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

D. Nikolic, rider of "Desert Ash", stated that after riding his mount along in the early part of the straight he stopped riding the filly over the concluding stages as he believed that the filly was not responding to his riding, and was not handling the track conditions today. The Stewards notified D. Nikolic that he must ride his mounts out to the end of the race.

Race 3 - GOLFHOUSE HOTEL FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE (2) - 1600 metres:

Acting on a report from the Starter that "Chilli Jam" had proved difficult to load into the barriers, Mr. Frank Salinitri, who was representing Mr. J. Salinitri, trainer of the filly, was notified that an official warning would be placed on "Chilli Jam", and that a barrier test certificate must be produced in respect of the filly prior to it racing again.

Approaching the 1200 metres "Piaget (NZ)" had to be eased when tightened for room by "Enzed Zabeel (NZ)", which was taken in slightly by "Chilli Jam".

In the straight "Enzed Zabeel (NZ)" and "Piaget (NZ)" laid in under pressure.

Race 4 - GLOBE HOTEL MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres:

"Iced" was slow to begin.

In the early stages of the race "Rabnoolas" got its head up when over-racing.

Near the 500 metres "The Danzig Trilogy" shifted out and hampered "Rabnoolas".

Race 5 - GEECEES CAFE BAR CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

On jumping away "Dance of Dreams" threw its head up and lost ground.

Passing the 1600 metres the saddle on "Treasure Island" shifted forward, resulting in Miss C. Cole, rider of the gelding, being at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

Race 6 - ZAGAME'S BALLARAT HOTEL CLASS 6 HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

"What a Blast" jumped away awkwardly, and as a result lost ground.

Passing the 1200 metres "Belus" had to be eased to avoid the heels of "Varsilayos", which shifted in slightly.

In the early stages of the race "Harms Way" over-raced.

Subsequent to the race the Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that "What a Blast" was showing signs of soreness in its near hind leg.

Race 7 - TEAC RISING STARS - BLUE BELL HOTEL CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

Acting on a confirmed telephone call from Mr. A. Bruce, trainer of "Carnochan", who stated that the gelding had injured itself and was unfit to run, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Carnochan" at 9.47 a.m. Mr. Bruce will submit a veterinary certificate in respect of the gelding.

After being placed in its starting stall "Hucktooie" became fractious and was temporarily cast. The filly was removed from the starting stall, examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon, and passed fit to run. Due to this the start of the race was delayed.

"I'll Be Gone" jumped away awkwardly, and as a result lost ground.

Approaching the 800 metres "Royal Performer" shifted out away from "Kenwood Allegro", and as a result hampered "I'll be Gone".

Miss Michelle Payne, rider of "Some Flight" which performed poorly, stated that the mare travelled well until put under pressure in the straight where it failed to respond to her riding. A veterinary examination subsequent to the race failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 8 - RED LION HOTEL CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

"Mighty Morphett" jumped away awkwardly.

L. Currie, rider of "Mighty Morphett", stated to the Stewards that he was unable to ride his mount out to the end of the race in his normal manner due to his mount shifting in approaching the winning post, resulting in him having to stop and straighten "Mighty Morphett" as he believed that he may have been going to cause interference to "Silver Boom", which was racing to his inside. The Stewards notified L.Currie that in their opinion he should have made a greater effort than he did on this occasion.

Race 9 - CROWN HOTEL BUNINYONG SUPER VOBIS THREE-YEARS-OLD FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE - 1400 metres:

Prior to correct weight M. Horobin, rider of "Wild Rapid", fourth past the post, viewed the Stewards' patrol video and decided not to lodge an objection.

On jumping away "Infinite Grace" knuckled.

Shortly after the start "Infinite Grace" had to be checked when tightened for room between "Euphamistic (NZ)", which shifted in slightly, and "Bar Sector", which shifted out.

On straightening "Bar Sector" shifted out and brushed "Wild Rapid" out on to "Just Heaven".

Shortly after this incident "Wild Rapid" was tightened for room between "Euphamistic (NZ)", which initially shifted out, and "Just Heaven", which shifted in slightly.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of the following races: "Scuttle Butt" - (Race 1); "Muscadet" - (Race 2); "Hot Fame" - (Race 5); "Willcannia" - (Race 6), and "Polaire" - Race 8.

It promises to be an anxious 24 hours for the New Zealand trainers of Distinctly Secret (NZ) (Distinctly North) and Kaapstad Way (NZ) (Kaapstad).

The Kiwi horses are touch and go to make the field for the $A2.5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) Gr. 1, at Caulfield on Saturday. The final field will be announced tomorrow at 1pm (NZ time).

"I’m sweating it out at the moment and hoping like anything he gets a start," said Distinctly Secret’s trainer, Mark Walker.

The Matamata trainer was initially disappointed with Distinctly Secret’s Yalumba Stakes seventh on Saturday but on further reflection has decided the tempo of the race didn’t really suit his charge.

If Distinctly Secret makes the field he will be ridden by in-form jockey Steven King.

Cambridge trainer Chris Wood is also fully aware that Kaapstad Way is on the borderline for the starting line-up.

"The track didn’t suit him entirely at in the Cranbourne Cup week, but he’s very well," said Wood.

"The big thing though is getting into the field - we’ll worry about all those other things like the weather once we know we’ve got a start."

The only NZ-trained horse guaranteed a start is the Brisbane Cup winner, Prized Gem (NZ) (Prized).

"That was too much of a pressure race for my mare," said Cambridge-based Baker in reference to Saturday’s Yalumba Stakes run at near track record pace. "She was working into it late and has come through the race alright."

Prized Gem’s Caulfield Cup jockey will be Queenslander Michael Rodd.

Oliver Set for Derby Test Drive on Davidoff

0817doliver.jpg (16282 bytes)Champion jockey Damien Oliver will be the new rider for leading AAMI Victoria Derby contender Davidoff at Caulfield on Saturday.

Trainer Mike Moroney confirmed Oliver had been booked for the mount in the $201,000 Group 2 AAMI Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m).

"The horse just hasn't had much luck at his past two starts and (part-owner) John Cappellin was keen for Damien to take the ride this week," Moroney said. "This is Damien's chance to test the horse out for his Derby ride."

The AAMI Victoria Derby carries special significance for Moroney given Second Coming's win in the race in 1997 helped launch his stunningly successful move into Melbourne racing.

"I like to have a horse or two set for the Derby and Davidoff has been earmarked for the race since before his first start," Moroney said.

"I gave him that one run in the bush in May and then put him away with the Derby in mind."

Davidoff made late ground for a third at Wodonga on May 31, then didn't appear again until a late-closing seventh over an unsuitable 1200m trip at Sandown on September 4.

The gelding's only two runs since have been genuine hard luck stories, most notably his close third at Flemington over 1800m on October 5.

"At one stage I wondered whether the Derby was going to come around too quickly for him, but his Flemington run was very good and he has trained on well since," Moroney said.

"I'm going to give him his chance in the Norman Robinson because I don't see this as a really tough Derby to win."

Meanwhile, outstanding prospect Helenus grabbed $3 equal favouritism for the AAMI Victoria Derby with his powerhouse win in last Saturday's Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Part-owner Troy Corstens sent a scare through racing fans when he spoke of spelling the colt instead of chasing the Derby, but his father, trainer Leon, had a different view.

"I can't see any reason why we wouldn't keep him going for the Derby," he said.

"I'll let the horse tell me as this week goes on and discuss it with the owners. I know it's his first preparation, but unless he shows any distress signs I think he'll keep going."

The trainer is confident the son of 1996 Arc de Triomphe winner Helissio will stay the 2500m distance of the AAMI Derby.

Corstens said he favoured taking Helenus back to Moonee Valley, the scene of his stunning Stutt Stakes win two starts back, to cap his AAMI Victoria Derby preparation.

"It works in well to give him two weeks in between runs and go for the AAMI Vase on Cox Plate Day," the trainer said.

Boom Sydney three year-old Platinum Scissors, who shares AAMI Victoria Derby favouritism with Helenus, will have his final lead-up to the Derby in Saturday's $201,000 Group 2 AAMI Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m).

New Measures Introduced to Improve the Welfare of Jockeys

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/30310--sp-75050449.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/victoria.gif desc=Both current and retired jockeys will benefit from a series of initiatives announced today as a result of a Study... size=small}
Both current and retired jockeys will benefit from a series of initiatives announced today as a result of a Study into the Welfare of Retired Jockeys, commissioned in 2001 in response to a call by the Hon Rob Hulls MP, Minister for Racing.

The Minister, Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) and the Victorian Jockeys' Association (VJA) released details of the measures at Flemington this morning. They include a series of key initiatives relating to jockey representation, welfare assistance, financial security, training and employment, mentoring and research that were documented in the final report.

RVL Chairman, Graham Duff said the initiatives resulted from a team effort between RVL and the VJA. The two industry bodies formed a Working Party to consider the recommendations of the study and to develop a program for implementation.

"The Working Party identified a comprehensive course of action for improving the retirement and welfare support services and strategies for Victorian jockeys. The Boards of RVL and the VJA have subsequently endorsed the Working Party’s proposals," Mr Duff said.

He said RVL also intended to develop similar financial and vocational welfare services to benefit other industry participants including stablehands, trackriders and trainers.

Mr Duff said RVL had committed to $1.1 million of funding over the next 3 years of implementation and an ongoing commitment of $300,000 per annum.

The key support initiatives include –

  • Establishing a dual financial investment scheme known as the Racing Victoria Jockey Retirement Benefits Package - one scheme providing traditional superannuation benefits on retirement from the workforce and the other delivering benefits at the end of a jockey’s riding career.
  • Upgrading the resources of the VJA by the creation of a full-time independently operated office at the Racing Victoria Centre.
  • Providing financial planning and management advisory services through the Racing Victoria Education and Training Centre as well as through the Retirement Benefits Package.
  • Promoting the existing racing industry’s Benevolent Fund Assistance Scheme to ensure current and retired jockeys are aware of its operation and understand how to apply.
  • Creating a Jockeys' Development Program focussing on education and training; career transition and planning; tertiary scholarships; and job placement and re-training.
  • Launching the Young Jockeys' Mentoring Program to connect retired jockeys with third year apprentices to help them with the transition to the senior ranks.
  • Expanding the current range of personal counselling services so that they are readily accessible by all current and retired jockeys.
  • Acknowledging the achievements and contributions of retired jockeys by working with the racing clubs to identify initiatives such as special retired jockeys’ family racedays; examining race meeting admission rights; and other forms of recognition.
  • Undertaking further research and initiatives relating to jockeys' welfare including reviewing the apprenticeship/employer deed of agreement; enhancing injury prevention programs; and introducing licensing requirements to ensure participation in essential training seminars and activities.

In further news on research into the health of jockeys, Mr Duff announced that RVL and Victoria University of Technology (VUT) have made a successful bid for a $70,000 grant from the Australian Research Council to conduct a three year study into the psychological health effects of wasting by Australian jockeys.

The VUT research team – headed up by Dr Harriet Speed who was the principal researcher of the 2001 Jockeys Study – will be aiming to formulate recommendations for the adoption of healthy weight management practices that promote psychological well-being.

"RVL and the VJA are delighted that jockeys' health issues are attracting this level of recognition and we look forward to positive outcomes from this research project," said Mr Duff.
