1008grandera.jpg (13906 bytes)Grandera is 5/2 joint favourite with Coral for the prestigious Cox Plate in Australia later this month.

The Godolphin colt, winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes this term, goes for another Group One prize at Moonee Valley on October 26.

Coral opened betting on the race on Sunday and made Grandera the 5/2 joint favourite along with the leading Australian contender Lonhro.

Sunline, the multiple Group race winner from New Zealand, is 4/1 along with Northerly.

"The Australian press are calling this the best Cox Plate for decades so Grandera has his work cut out to beat a high class field," said Coral spokesman Simon Clare.

1008grandera5.jpg (12303 bytes)Grandera did his first fast work on Saturday since arriving in Australia at the start of the month.

He galloped over five furlongs at Sandown Racecourse, with stable companion Atlantis Prince leading for four furlongs. Grandera then moved smoothly up and went ahead.

Godolphin's Tony Howarth told the organisation's website said: "We were very pleased with Grandera. It wasn't a bad time, 1m 4s. It was a good stretch and blow."

"Grandera just cruised up to Atlantis Prince and went a couple of lengths clear. The horse seemed to thoroughly enjoy it, which is exactly what we wanted."

Coral bet: 5/2 Lonhro, Grandera, 4/1 Sunline, Northerly, 8/1 Defier, 14/1 Bel Esprit, 16/1 Magical Miss, 20/1 Fields of Omagh, 33/1 Victory Vein, 40/1 Ustinov.

Lonhro Downs Sunline in a Classic

Lonhro has won the Group One Yalumba Stakes after a spine tingling battle with the champion mare Sunline.

In a gut busting final 400 metres the toughness and fighting qualities of Sunline were not enough to hold out the heir apparent and Cox Plate favourite Lonhro.

There was no Bonecrusher and no Our Waverley Star in sight, but boy this race captured the crowd in a way no other had for many years.

The packed stands and packed grass lawns rocked as Sunline skipped a couple of lengths clear at the top of the straight but was run down in the final 50 metres by the Hawkes trained star.

A son of the former champion Octagonal, Lonhro carries the all cerise colours of Jack and Bob Ingham's Woodlands Stud Syndicate.

Jack Ingham was all smiles after the win.

"What can you say," he said. "What a race."

"Coming up the straight I didn't think he was going to pick her up," Ingham added. "She's a great mare and it was a fantastic battle."

Winning trainer John Hawkes albeit as usually subdued was also talking up the contest, which was the best of the year to date.

"She had her chance," he said. "We had our chance. And I'm just glad we were able to get there right on the line."

Both horses will join the likes of Grandera, Northerly and possibly star three-year-olds Bel Esprit and Victory Vein in the $3 million Carlton Draught Cox Plate in a fortnight.

Lonhro and Sunline spaced the rest of the field. The third placegetter Ustinov was a further five and a half lengths away.

Of the unplaced brigade the talented Group One winning mare Prized Gem worked home solidly, with a lightning final 200 metres, to finish fifth.

3rd CHOISIR - Glen Boss - "Just overraced too much, great job to finish third, winner too good."

4th GREAT GLEN - Kerrin McEvoy - "Great run in transit. Looked a good chance to finish in the placings at the turn, but first two were too classy."

6th BUNKER - Greg Childs - "Lovely run in transit. Stuck to guns well, look for his next run this preparation."

7th DELAGO BROM - Steven Arnold - "Blinkers helped settled him better today. With a clear run in the straight he could have finished closer."

1012blur.jpg (13291 bytes)The locals have made a dynamic start to Caulfield Guineas Day when the talented three-year-old Blur won the first race today, the Bolle Classic in exciting finish.

Trained on the track by Colin Little, Blur ($5-$7.50-$7) proved a touch too strong for the West Australian visitor Stormy's Son ($12-$9), while the Sydneysider Chester County ($4.80-$8) was third.

Despite having to carry by far the heaviest weight in the race the son of Flying Spur proved too strong.

1012blur2.jpg (11540 bytes)"It was a good win as I was a little worried about him being able to carry the weight," winning trainer Colin Little said moments after the win.

The win gave Little plenty of reasons to smile as he had planned to win the event months ago.

"He was probably ready to race a month ago," Little reported. "But we picked this race out so it's nice to be able to win it."

Blur, who shot to prominence at the Adelaide Cup Carnival in May, was having his first start since a strong fourth to the brilliant Lovely Jubly in the Group One TJ Smith in Brisbane.

"I would have been quite disappointed if he had not won today," Little confessed.

1012colinlittle.jpg (11016 bytes)A major driving force behind the win came thanks to race jockey Steven King, who rode the Flying Spur gelding in great style.

"It was a great ride," Little added.

The disappointments of the race were the first and second favourites Unbridled Smile and True Glo who finished sixth and seventh respectively.

The $75,500 Bolle Classic was the first of nine races on the card at Caulfield today on a day which will host three Group One events.

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/13400--sp-127442184.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/victoria.gif desc=The Stewards yesterday concluded the inquiries into charges issued against jockey, Lisa Irwin and Ms Sharon Pope adjourned from 19th... size=small}

The Stewards yesterday concluded the inquiries into charges issued against jockey, Lisa Irwin and Ms Sharon Pope adjourned from 19th September, 2002.

Evidence was taken yesterday from Mr Richard Smith, Barrister representing Ms Lisa Irwin. Further evidence was taken from Lisa Irwin and Sharon Pope. Written evidence was submitted by Dr D Shum of Geelong, Dr J Virgona of East Geelong Medical Centre and Dr J McCorkell, VRC Club Doctor.

Lisa Irwin had been charged with an improper practice on Monday 26th August, 2002 at the Hamilton racecourse after being required by Stewards to provide a sample of her urine for analysis after presenting a urine sample, which had been provided by another person. Ms Lisa Irwin was found guilty of that charge and suspended from riding in races for a period of 4 months commencing at midnight on the 4th September, 2002.

Lisa Irwin had also been charged with giving false evidence to the Stewards at Hamilton racecourse on the 26th August, 2002. The false evidence being she told the Stewards that a urine sample that she had presented was her own when in fact it had been provided by another person. Lisa Irwin was found guilty of the charge and suspended from riding in races for a period of 2 months, to be served concurrently with the previous charge handed down today.

Lisa Irwin had been further charged in relation to a urine sample provided by her at the East Geelong Medical Centre on Tuesday, 27th August, 2002, as a result of direction by the Hamilton Racing Club Stewards on the 26th August, 2002. Upon analysis, that sample was found to contain a substance banned under the Rules of Racing. Lisa Irwin was found guilty of the charge and suspended from riding in races, track work and trials for a period of 2 months commencing at midnight on the 4th September, 2002.

The Stewards accepted that Lisa Irwin had consumed a lawfully prescribed medication upon the advice of her medical practitioner for therapeutic purposes and the medication contained amphetamines, a substance banned under the Rules of Racing.

Ms Irwin was advised prior to riding again she must deliver a urine sample free of any banned substances to the Stewards.

In arriving at their decision in terms of penalty, Stewards took into account Ms Irwin had been stood down from riding from 4th September, 2002.

Ms Sharon Pope had been charged with being a party to a person committing a breach of the Rules at the Hamilton Racing Club on the 26th August, 2002, in that she provided a urine sample which was later submitted by Lisa Irwin for analysis. Ms Pope was notified that as an unregistered person, the Stewards would make a recommendation to the Board of Racing Victoria Limited that any application lodged on her behalf to be lodged as stablehand, track rider or to ride in trials not be approved until midnight on the 11th December, 2002, a period of 2 months.

1012spinninghill.jpg (14677 bytes)Spinning Hill earned the right to be regarded as one of the country's best sprinters when she sizzled home to win her second consecutive Group race.

With brilliant Victorian jockey Patrick Payne in the saddle the brilliant mare stormed home carving out jet like sectionals to get up in the final couple of strides to beat the brilliant international performer Falvelon.

The race favourite Mistegic, a winner of last year's Schillaci Stakes, was third a further length back.

1012ppayne.jpg (11705 bytes)Winning trainer Guy Walter was lost for superlatives for the mare, who provides him with a twinkle in the eye every time her name is mentioned.

"What a great mare she is," Walter exclaimed. "She's a fantastic mare - a fabulous mare."

"It was a very good ride by Patrick," he added. "He is one of the best in the business that's for sure."

Spinning Hill, who was a last start winner of the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley, reeled off incredible sectionals over the final stages of the race.

Her last 600 metres was run in 32.7 seconds, with the final 400 metres and 200 metres in equally as speedy breaks of 21.6 and 10.74 seconds respectively.

1012spinninghill2.jpg (9748 bytes)The win of Spinning Hill was the second success on the afternoon for Sydney based trainer Guy Walter. Earlier in the afternoon he saddled up the enigmatic Palladium Star to win the Air Conditioning Professionals Plate in another fast finishing win.

Danny Bougoure, the trainer of the runner-up Falvelon, was thrilled with the racetrack return of his talented gelding.

"It was a great run," Bougoure said. "He seems to be right on track," he added when asked about preparations for a third consecutive Hong Kong International Sprint.

A protest fired in by the rider of the fifth placegetter North Boy (Greg Childs) against the original fourth placed Fair Embrace (Darren Gauci) was upheld by stewards at a subsequent hearing.
