Race 1 - HYLAND SPORTSWEAR AUSTRALIA vs IRELAND HURDLE - 2860 metres:

"Bubble Gum", which had been restless in its stall, was slow to begin, and "Te Moana (NZ)" and "Masterful Lad (NZ)" both stood flat-footed, and lost considerable ground.

P. Daniel, rider of "Montana Magic" which was eased out of the race rounding the home turn, stated that the gelding had been giving ground and was a beaten horse at the time, and for this reason he eased it out of the race. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

Subsequently Carol Faithful, trainer of "Montana Magic", was notified that the gelding must school to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an organized hurdle trial before competing in a jumps race in future.

"Masterful Lad (NZ)", which made a faulty jump near the winning post on the first occasion and almost fell, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon subsequent to the race. The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that he could find no abnormality.

Race 2 - DAVID BENHAM HANDICAP - 1740 metres:

Prior to correct weight S. Baster, rider of "Mister Expert", fourth past the post, viewed the Stewards' videos, and lodged an objection against "Purple Road" being declared second placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference in the early part of the straight. After the parties had viewed the Stewards' videos, and after hearing the evidence of the parties concerned, the Stewards upheld the objection, the amended placings being: "Kattavia", 1st; "Marauding Ruler", 2nd; "Mister Expert", 3rd, and "Purple Road", 4th.

On jumping away "Decimation" and "Marauding Ruler" bumped, which resulted in "Marauding Ruler" becoming unbalanced.

R. Booth, rider of "King Robdon", stated that on the home turn his right spur became entangled in his gear, which resulted in him losing the use of his off-side iron for a short distance, and him becoming unbalanced.

At the entrance to the straight "Purple Road", which was laying in and had difficulty obtaining a clear run, was accidentally struck on the head by the whip of R. Booth, rider of "King Robdon". "Purple Road" then shifted in across the heels of "Decimation", and took "Mister Expert" in off its course, hampering that gelding, and causing "Mister Expert" to lose its running. A. Findlay, rider of "Purple Road", was severely reprimanded, and notified that he must exercise far greater care when obtaining runs in future.

Race 3 - ANSIS DIZGALVIS SPRINT - 1000 metres:

"Chiaretto", which was restless in its stall, was removed from the stalls, examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run.

"Arnside", which was restless and lashing out, was also removed from its stall, and passed fit to run by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon.

"Chiaretto" knuckled on jumping away.

Also on jumping away "Miss Dehere" and "Zashmir" came together.

Shortly after this "Miss Dehere" was hampered when tightened for room between "Zashmir" and "Signor Pagolino", which shifted out.

"Arousing (NZ)", which missed the start slightly, was then tightened for room by "Steel King", which was taken in by "Go Taiut", which had to shift in to avoid the heels of "Kasi Haraka".

After passing the 400 metres "Signor Pagolino" had a tendency to lay in under pressure towards "Royal Calcutta".

"Kasi Haraka", which gave ground over the concluding stages, collapsed and died on pulling up.

Race 4 - BILL PRICE 1800 - 1800 metres:

"Hennessy Road" was hampered when tightened for room between "Our Santolina (NZ)", which shifted in slightly, and "Wannaway", which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.

Near the 200 metres "Sweet City Sioux", when making ground, was inconvenienced when tightened for room between "Splash of Love" and "Peria", which shifted in slightly under pressure before being straightened.

Race 5 - AURIE'S STAR HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

Shane Dye", rider of "Dash for Cash", stated that the gelding travelled well in the early and middle stages of the race, but gave ground when put under pressure approaching the 300 metres. A veterinary examination of "Dash for Cash" failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 6 - MAX HAWKINS & MICHAEL BRONDOU HANDICAP - 2660 metres:

No report.

Race 7 - ROSEMARY KENNY HANDICAP - 1800 metres:

On the home turn "Hit the Spot" was temporarily held up for a run between "Laird's Bounty" and "Somebody Smiled", which was weakening.

Reece Wheeler, rider of "Tineke" which gave ground over the concluding stages, stated that the gelding failed to respond to his riding, and changed stride on a number of occasions. Wheeler added that, as he believed that something may have been amiss with it, he eased it down over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination of "Tineke" failed to reveal any abnormality.

During the running of the race "Cherak (NZ)" lost its near hind plate.

Race 8 - GEORGE VELLA HANDICAP - 1430 metres:

As there was no other rider or apprentice available within one kilogram of the weight allotted to "Mawhoob", the Stewards permitted D. Oliver to ride the gelding at 1.5 kilograms over its allotted weight.

When "Hirule" had to be eased off the heels of "Fine and Dapper" near the 800 metres, "Century Hawk", which was following, then had to be checked.

"Work and Tumble (NZ)" had difficulty obtaining a clear run from the entrance to the straight to near the 300 metres.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of all races today.

ADJOURNED INQUIRIES:

An inquiry into the reason for the late notification of L. Milham as the rider of "Let's Remember", which ran in the Bill Price 1800 - Race 4 - was adjourned to a date to be fixed. L. Milham was replaced by M. Pegus.

An inquiry into the reason for "Panasie", when ineligible, being nominated for the Bill Price 1800 - Race 4 - was adjourned to a date to be fixed. (Mr. John North).

RESUMED INQUIRY:

The Stewards today concluded the inquiry, which was adjourned at Caulfield on Saturday, 3rd August, 2002, into the use of the whip by R. Booth, rider of "Jasper's Gold" in the Cash Converters Handicap. R. Booth was fined $200 for unnecessary use of the whip on the gelding.
