 5 “Lady Trice” A. Findlay J. Didham

Race 1 - COLLINS DENTAL IMAGE SPRINT - 1000 metres:

Near the 600m “Watutsi”, when being steadied, shifted in and brushed “Vegas Show”.  “Vegas Show”, which was racing close to the heels of “Miss Marion” and “Dama De Noche”, then clipped the heels of “Miss Marion” and knuckled when “Miss Marion” shifted out slightly.  After passing the 200m, “Watutsi” had to be checked off the heels of “Miss Marion” when attempting a run between “Miss Marion” and “Vegas Show”.

Race 2 - MARIBYRNONG TRIAL STAKES - 900 metres:

“Sunday’s Glory” shifted in abruptly on jumping away and hampered “Sircail”.

Race 3 - CUP HURDLE- 3250 metres:

“Waratah Special”, which was pulled up after jumping the second last hurdle, was found to be lame in the near hind leg.  T. Carson, the trainer of the mare, was notified that prior to racing again he must produce a medical clearance for the horse.  A. Beveridge, rider of “Nostrovia” stated that after the gelding made faulty jumps over the hurdles at the 1500m and again at the 1100m, she believed that something was amiss with it and for this reason she eased it out of the race.  A Veterinary examination of  “Nostrovia” subsequent to the race failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 4 - NIGHTMARCH HANDICAP - 2000 metres: J. Didham was notified, in accordance with the rules, as rider of "Lexitaw".  In the straight, “Meridien Magic” hung in and for this reason S. Wynne was unable to ride the gelding out in her normal manner.  Near the 300m “Lexitaw”, which was giving ground, was hampered when tightened for room between “Skinjite (NZ)” and “King Salieri (NZ)”, which was taken out by “Teerex”, which shifted out to obtain a run.

Race 5 - BAGUETTE HANDICAP - 1430 metres:

Near the 1000m, “Harms Way” was tightened for room and “Royal Calcutta” was hampered when tightened for room by “Encosta Legend”, which had a tendency to shift in away from “Enfold” before being taken in slightly by that gelding, which shifted in before being straightened.  D. Gauci, rider of “Enfold” was notified that he must ensure that he is sufficiently clear of others when shifting ground at all times.  At the entrance to the straight, “Royal Calcutta” had to be checked when tightened for room between “Enfold” which shifted in slightly when weakened and “Harms Way” shifted out to obtain a run on the outside of “Lady Trice”.  As no one rider was fully responsible the Stewards took no action, however, M. Pumpa, rider of “Harms Way”, was notified that he must exercise the utmost care when attempting runs in future.  Shortly after this incident “Enfold” had to be eased off the heels of “Encosta Legend” which shifted in under pressure.  Subsequent to the race the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that “Encosta Legend” was sore in the near foreleg.  A. Bennett, trainer of “Encosta Legend” was notified that prior to the gelding racing again, she must produce a veterinary clearance for it.

Race 6 - RAZOR SHARP HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

“Phinrow” which was restless in the stalls, was slow to begin.  Near the 500m “Phinrow” became unbalanced when racing tight on the outside of “The Little Tacker”.  Also near the 400m, “Blofeld” was tightened for room between “Kelshiki” and “Unrocel Saint”.  Shortly after this incident “Pompous” became unbalanced when tightened for room between “Keldance” and “On The Ranch” which shifted in when weakening.  “Look  For A Star”, which was following “On The Ranch”, then had to be checked off the heels of that gelding.  C. Newitt, rider of “Unrocel Saint” was notified that he must ensure that he rides all his mounts out to the end of the race.

Race 7 - FIRE OAK HANDICAP - 1800 metres:

The Stewards authorised the withdrawal of "Zatopek" (NZ) at 9.35am when it was established that T. Scott, trainer of the gelding, was incorrectly advised by the Trainers Services Centre that the track rating for today's meeting was "Good" when it was in fact officially rated "Dead", which cost the horse a run.  On the home turn “Prince Baa Baa” had to be checked when disappointed for a run between “Yo Yo Ma” and “Tezza Raami” which was weakening when being checked.  “Prince Baa Baa” shifted in which resulted in “Baralae” being tightened for room and then being checked.  After passing the 1000m “Wild Classic” was taken out by “Smoking Barrel”, which shifted out to improve its position on the outside of “Yo Yo Ma”.  L. Milham, rider of “Prince Baa Baa” which performed below expectations, stated that the gelding raced in a forward position in the early and middle stages of the race but was  hampered on the home turn when disappointed for a run and did not respond as he would have expected in the straight.  He also stated that “Prince Baa Baa” felt normal on pulling up.  A Veterinary examination of “Prince Baa Baa” subsequent to the race failed to reveal any abnormalities.  In the straight, “Wild Classic” was inconvenienced when tightened slightly between “Another Trick” and “Yo Yo Ma”, which shifted out slightly under pressure.

Race 8 - JEZABEEL HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

An objection was lodged by B. Prebble, rider of “Makybe Diva (GB)”, second place getter, against “Little Miss Quick”, declared the winner, on the grounds of alleged interference in the straight.  After taking evidence from the parties concerned and after viewing all videos, the Stewards upheld the objection, the amended placings being First - No. 9 “Makybe Diva” and Second - No.8 “Little Miss Quick”.  C. Newitt, rider of “Little Miss Quick” was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift out in the straight and was notified that he must stop riding and make a genuine effort to straighten his mount in similar incidents.  Approaching and passing the 1000m, “Jewel of Kingston” brushed the running rail on two occasions.  On the home turn “Shally’s Magic” was taken out by “Forlorna (IRE)” .  J. Didham, rider of “Forlorna (IRE)”, which performed below expectations, stated that the mare was never travelling well in any stage of the race and failed to respond to his riding when put under pressure rounding the home turn.   The mare, which was having a second run from a spell, may not have backed up so quickly after that first up run.  J. Didham stated that the mare felt normal upon pulling up.  A Veterinary examination of “Forlorna (IRE)” subsequent to the race revealed a sore near hind leg.  S. Laxon, trainer of  “Forlorna (IRE)” was notified that prior to the mare racing again she must produce a veterinary clearance.  A Veterinary examination of “Elathea” subsequent to the race revealed that the mare was short in front.  J. Hall, trainer of “Elathea” was notified that prior to the mare racing again, he was to produce a veterinary certificate.
