Sixty Seconds May Race in America

1005sixtyseconds.jpg (13058 bytes)The four-year-old Centaine mare Sixty Seconds (NZ) has been retired from racing in Australasia after a bleeding attack during the Group 2 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

The big, lightly framed, mare was being prepared for a run in the Carlton Draught Caulfield Cup on October 19th, 2002. Sixty Seconds (NZ) will have a change of direction now with her owners investigating racing her in the United States.

Trained by Roger James from his Flemington stables the mare performed at the highest level during her three-year-old career and this culminated in her win in the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill on March 23rd, 2002.

Prior to that run, Sixty Seconds (NZ) (ex Fifteen Reasons by Sound Reason), had won the Group 2 Fayette Park Championship Stakes, 2100m, at Ellerslie and recorded a Group 1 placing in the Mercedes New Zealand Derby, 2400m, also at Ellerslie. Sixty Seconds (NZ) finishes her racing career with a record of 12 starts, four wins and three places and stakes of $A376,181.

Glenlogan Park Stud Queensland, purchased Sixty Seconds (NZ) as a yearling at New Zealand Bloodstock Ltd’s Premier Yearling Sales for $A80,000.

However in what may well become a trend for northern hemisphere breeders Sixty Seconds (NZ) was purchased by Gerald Leigh for $A1m after her Group 2 Fayette Park Championship Stakes win. Leigh, one of England’s top breeders, unfortunately passed away earlier this year from cancer, but his family have continued to race Sixty Seconds (NZ).

James and other prominent bloodstock agents have reported a lift in interest in European breeders investigating the Australasian yearling market for quality fillies, with the performance of Sixty Seconds (NZ) playing a major part in this interest.
