Peter Pan Silks to Be Sold at Inglis Auction

peterpan250.jpg (25462 bytes)The registered silks of the former champion galloper Peter Pan will go under the hammer in Melbourne later this month at the William Inglis August Thoroughbred Sale.

In a unique offering on the account of Archie Foy, the famous orange and green silks will be sold at the completion of the sale next Friday.

Foaled in 1929, Peter Pan had 36 starts in his illustrious career for 23 wins, six seconds and one third while amassing $69,682 in stakes earnings for his wins in the early 30s.

Australian racegoers would have not thought it possible to have been treated to another champion so soon after the tragic death in America of Phar Lap.

But racegoers knew Peter Pan was going to be something special when he won the AJC Derby in 1932.

Later that year the flashy chestnut gelding galloped to victory in the Melbourne Cup, just three days after winning the Melbourne (now Mackinnon) Stakes.

Two years later the champion son of Pantheon again took the Melbourne Stakes and Cup double at Flemington.

He also won the Rawson (now Ranvet) Stakes, AJC Plate (now Queen Elizabeth Stakes), All-Aged Stakes and many other feature events including the Hill Stakes, Craven Plate, AJC St. Leger and two runnings of the Cumberland Stakes. The Cumberland is no longer run, but its honour roll includes the champions Phar Lap, Carbine, Poseidon, Eurythmic, Limerick, Delta, Tranquil Star, Poitrel and Spear Chief.

The colours, which will go under the hammer as lot number 211, are registered with the Victorian Racing Club and the registration will be transferred to the purchaser.
