In the early stages of the race the saddle on "Royal Rule" shifted forward placing L. Milham, its rider, at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

The lead bag, which had been placed on "Royal Rule", was dislodged near the 600 metres as a result of the saddle shifting forward.

Subsequent to the race L. Milham, rider of "Royal Rule", weighed in under his declared weight. L. Milham called for the bridle, but he was still under his declared weight. The Stewards disqualified "Royal Rule" from the race, and amended the placings to read: "Bounty Beat (NZ)"; 1st; "Psychotic"; 2nd, "Flying Cape"; 3rd "Cannydance", 4th, and"Lord Tizer"., 5th.

Approaching the 300 metres "Predominate" was hampered when tightened for room between "Stylish Queen" and "Mega Moon", which shifted in slightly away from "Marrisk".

The Stewards questioned apprentice Ricky DeBono, rider of "Artemus", regarding his riding of the mare from near the 500 metres until just after straightening. R. DeBono stated to the Stewards that his instructions were to ride the mare quietly in the early stages as the mare had drawn a wide barrier, and to commence to improve his position after passing the 600 metres. R. DeBono further stated that the mare had a tendency to shift out after being struck with the whip near the 200 metres. Mr. G. Moloney, employer of R. DeBono, confirmed the instructions given. R. DeBono was severely reprimanded by the Stewards for failing to improve his position near the 500 metres when able to do so. .
