Race 1 - WERRIBEE CUP INFIELD MARQUEE MAIDEN PLATE - 1625 metres:

Near the 1400 metres "Count of Conjola" was eased when tightened for room between "Dreamers Disease" and 'Bissare", which shifted in slightly.

Approaching the 1200 metres "Bissare", which was over-racing, had to be checked off the heels of "Roselander".

Near the 1100 metres "Bissare", which continued to over-race, shifted out and hampered "Imperial Ace.

Approaching the home turn "Lockie's Lady" had difficulty obtaining a clear run.

Approaching the 200 metres "Oka" shifted out and inconvenienced "Bissare".

Race 2 - WERRIBEE CUP GALA BALL FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE - 1010 metres:

As "Triomphe Royale" was unable to be loaded into the barriers the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the mare at 1.16 p.m.

Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies bet on "Triomphe Royale" be refunded, and that all successful bets on horses prior to the time of withdrawal of "Triomphe Royale" be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Four cents; Place Bets: Five cents; Winning Concession Bets: Four cents, and Doubles Bets: Four cents. All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal were ordered to be paid at face value of the ticket.

Acting on a report from the Starter regarding the unruly behaviour of "Triomphe Royale" whilst attempting to place it in its starting stall, the Stewards notified Mr. P. B. Clarke, trainer of the mare, that an official warning would be placed on 'Triomphe Royale", and that he must produce a barrier test certificate in respect of the mare prior to it racing again.

On jumping away "Starspec" was eased when tightened for room between "Hello Positano" and "Raging Inferno", which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.

An inquiry into the reason for E. Cassar, rider of "Starspec", being dislodged near the 800 metres was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Near the 700 metres "Ringcraft" was tightened for room between "Proud Courage" and "Private Dreams", which shifted out away from "Midsummer's Night".

Near the 500 metres "Proud Courage" shifted in and hampered "Private Dreams".

Shortly after this "Raging Inferno", which was over-racing, had to be checked off the heels of "Private Dreams".

Approaching and rounding the home turn "Raging Inferno" had difficulty in obtaining a clear run.

L. Currie, rider of "Ringcraft" which performed poorly, stated to the Stewards that after being tightened for room near the 600 metres the mare was then reluctant to race.

Race 3 - TEAC RISING STARS APPRENTICE JOCKEY CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1115 metres:

On jumping away "Plenary Indulgence" shifted in and hampered "Just Brawny" and "Blazing Plane".

On straightening "Stormin' Abassi" was disappointed for a run between "Kenwood Allegro" and "Smooth Customer", which shifted out slightly.

Approaching the winning post "Just Brawny" had to be eased off the heels of "Smooth Customer".

Race 4 - WERRIBEE CUP CALCUTTA MAIDEN PLATE - 1425 metres:

On arrival at the barrier "Red Fire" had to be re-plated, which resulted in the start of the race being delayed.

"Red Fire" was slow to begin.

Near the 1000 metres "Teaposit" had to be eased when tightened for room by Ðance About", which shifted in.

Passing the 600 metres "Battersea (NZ)" was disappointed for a run for some distance on the inside of "Snap to It", which had a tendency to lay in.

Near the 100 metres "Jugah Tone" was tightened for room when attempting a narrow run between "Point Score" and "Teaposit", which shifted in.

Over the concluding stages of the race "Battersea (NZ)" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.

P. Mertens, rider of "Snap to It" which performed below expectations, stated that after jumping away well and obtaining a position the gelding then did not travel well, and when put under pressure running down the side near the 600 metres it began to lay in. P. Mertens added that "Snap to It" felt normal in its action on pulling up. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

Subsequent to the event the Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that "Bansha" had sustained a laceration to its off fore leg.

Race 5 - CHEFS ON THE RUN CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1625 metres:

Near the 1100 metres "Prince Baa Baa" had to be eased to avoid the heels of "Latent", which shifted in.

Approaching the 800 metres "Masked Raider" which was over-racing clipped the heels of "Life's A Beach", resulting in "Life's A Beach" becoming unbalanced.

On the home turn "Dolphin Way" was inconvenienced when tightened for room by "Grand Franco (NZ)", which shifted in slightly.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight "Masked Raider" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.

After passing the 200 metres "Masked Raider" (J. Patton) had to be checked when disappointed for a run between "Life's a Beach" and "Lady Neena" where there was insufficient room. The incident was aggravated due to "Lady Neena" being taken in slightly by "Latent" (D. Taggart). J. Patton was notified to ensure that he has sufficient room when attempting runs in future, and D. Taggart was notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

For the majority of the straight " Dolphin Way" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.

Race 6 - HAHN PREMIUM LIGHT CLASS HANDICAP - 2030 metres:

Turning out of the straight "Channon Grove (NZ)" over-raced. As a result the saddle on the gelding shifted forward, resulting in R. Booth, the rider of the gelding, being at a disadvantage. Due to this "Channon Grove (NZ)" shifted out to avoid the heels of "Music Royale", thereby tightening "Military Prayer" out on to "Tocar", resulting in "Military Prayer" having to be checked.

Approaching the 400 metres "Music Royale" shifted out and brushed "The Greta Mob" out on to "Bonoval".

M. Flaherty, rider of "Strawberry Affair (NZ)", was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out passing the 400 metres, thereby taking "Tocar" out on to "Music Royale", "The Greta Mob", "Bonoval" and "Praznik", resulting in "Music Royale" having to be checked, and "The Greta Mob, 'Bonoval" and "Praznik" being hampered.

A veterinary examination of "Music Royale" subsequent to the race failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 7 - JAYCO CLASS 6 HANDICAP - 2030 metres:

"China Garden (NZ)" jumped away awkwardly, and lost ground.

Turning out of the straight the saddle on "Nasqueyo" shifted forward, placing Laura Bulger rider of the gelding at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

Race 8 - TOOHEYS NEW FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1425 metres:

"Mighty Morphett" was slow to begin.

Near the 1100 metres "Dance of Dreams" got its head up when being restrained, and as a result "Star Serenade", which was following, was hampered in consequence. 

Passing the200 metres "Dance On Wood" shifted in to obtain a run and as a result made contact with the hind legs of "Fancy A Flutter, resulting in "Fancy A Flutter" becoming unbalanced. Shortly after this "Dressed To Impress" had to be checked when tightened for room between "Mighty Morphett" and "Fancy A Flutter" which was taken out by "Bimbo Limbo"(P Mertens) which shifted out when not clear. After taking into account all the circumstances the stewards severely reprimanded P Mertens and notified him that they were giving him the benefit of a doubt as to whether the fact that "Fancy A Flutter" had became unbalanced just prior to the incident had contributed to the interference.

Rounding the home turn and in the straight "Numilla" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.
From the 200 metres to the winning post "Dance on Wood" had difficulty obtaining a clear run.
Approaching the winning post "Numilla" had to be checked when disappointed for a run.

S. Baster, rider of "Star Serenade" which performed below expectations, stated that the filly hung out when put under pressure from the 600 metres, and as a result failed to respond to his riding.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of the following races: "Roselander" - Race 1; "Hello Positano" - Race 2; "Blazing Plane" - Race 3; "L'Avenir" - Race 7 - and "True Peace" - Race 8.

 Five horses were pre-race blood tested for post-race analysis.

Explanations; The Stewards accepted the explanation of G. Mallinson, trainer of "Oka", for the late notification of L. Robertson as the rider of the gelding in race 1.

SUMMARY

FINES  Dale Smith, rider of "Count of Conjola", was fined $300 for using the whip unnecessarily on the gelding. Race 1.
P. Mertens, rider of "Kaarla", was fined $200 for failing to weigh in. Second placegetter. Race 1.
C. Brown, trainer of "Battersea (NZ)", was fined $50 for the late notification of rider.
SEVERE REPRIMANDS & SUSPENSIONS: M. Flaherty, rider of "Strawberry Affair" - Race 7 - was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift ground when not clear of other runners.
HORSE ACTIONS: Triomphe Royale, Warned. Unable to load. Race 2.
