Spring Shock: Don Eduardo Breaks Down - Retirement Beckons

r2doneduardo.jpg (12356 bytes)The four-year-old Zabeel entire Don Eduardo (NZ) has been forced from taking further part in the Victorian Spring Carnival with an injured fetlock. Trainer Lee Freedman said that Don Eduardo (NZ) will have surgery to remove a bone chip.

The question of Don Eduardo (NZ) (ex Diamond Lover by Sticks And Stones) returning to the track in the autumn will be answered after the surgery. However with the stallion being a large strong horse Freedman says it will depend on being able to keep weight off the injury to take the pressure off the leg.

Don Eduardo (NZ) has a valuable career at stud ahead of him and his owner Phillippines businessman and long time breeder in Australia, Eduardo Cojuangco, may want to commence his stallion career without further racing.

r2doneduardo2.jpg (9802 bytes)Don Eduardo (NZ) was purchased as a yearling from Cambridge Stud at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ltd Premier Yearling sale in 2000 for a record $NZ3.6m. From the Group 1 winning mare Diamond Lover, who is from Eight Carat, Don Eduardo is a three-quarter brother to the successful young stallion Octagonal. Don Eduardo (NZ) is a half brother to the Group 1 winning Tristalove (dam of Group 1 winning Viking Ruler ), Antwerp and a full brother to the Group 2 winning Peruzzi.

Lightly raced with only 14 race day starts Don Eduardo (NZ) had a successful autumn in 2002 stamping his mark on his generation with a win in the Group 1, AJC Derby, 2400m at Randwick on March 30th. With his bloodlines already being some of the most successful in Australasia the Group 1 win secured his value and stud future at the highest level.

Don Eduardo (NZ) has won five of the starts, placed on two and earned $A1,572,610 in stakes.
