Race 1 - VODAFONE "BUSINESS ON THE MOVE" STEEPLECHASE - about 3200 metres:

On return to scale it was noted that "Sovereign Ties" had lost its near hind plate.

The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that "Kevie's`Luck", which had been pulled up by S. Pateman, its rider, approaching the last fence, had suffered a bleeding attack.

A. Garraway, rider of "Jon Ledecky (NZ)", stated that his mount was a beaten horse at the 600 metres, and failed to respond to his riding from that point. A veterinary examination of "Jon Ledecky (NZ)" failed to reveal any apparent abnormality.

Race 2 - DATUM HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

A section of rail in the 1000-metre chute blew down prior to the running of this race. The race was delayed until 1.58 p.m. to allow this rail to be re-erected. As a result of this the remaining races were re-scheduled as under:

Race 3 2.28 p.m.
Race 4 3.05 p.m.
Race 5 3.40 p.m.
Race 6 4.20 p.m.
Race 7 5.00 p.m.
Race 8 5.35 p.m.

On jumping away "El Capitan" was tightened on to "Choreograph" due to "Mighty Mirage" jumping away awkwardly, and shifting out.

"Romanesque" jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Rounding the turn near the 600 metres "Sensational Swing" shifted out and brushed "Mighty Mirage".

In the early part of the straight "Gold Express" had to change course to obtain a clear run.

"Romanesque" hung out badly throughout the race.

When asked for an explanation of the poor performance of "Choreograph" M. Pumpa, the rider of the gelding, stated that the horse had appeared normal prior to the race, and travelled well until near the 400 metres. M. Pumpa added that from that point it failed to respond to his riding. A veterinary examination of "Choreograph" revealed no apparent abnormality.

Race 3 - THE KANBAY EXPERIENCE HANDICAP - 1523 metres:

Rounding the home turn "La Quinta Gold" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.

On return to scale it was noted that "Fullarton Road" had lost its off hind plate.

Race 4 - DELL COMPUTER HANDICAP - 1523 metres:

"Fraar Image" stumbled near the 800 metres.

S. Baster, rider of "Fraar Image", explained to the Stewards that his mount had been reluctant to stretch out in the early and middle stages of the race, and after the gelding had stumbled near the 800 metres he decided to ease "Fraar Image" down although at that stage he believed that the action of "Fraar Image" appeared normal, but given the way that it had raced in the early and middle stages, and then blundered, he felt that he should not persevere in the race. The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that he had found no abnormality with "Fraar Image", but the gelding had shifted both its near fore and near hind plates during the running of the race.

In the early part of the straight "Star Doc" shifted in towards "Wyndam Special (NZ)".

Approaching the winning post "Wyndam Special (NZ)" shifted out towards "Star Doc".

Race 5 - PEN COMPUTER SYSTEMS HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

Shortly after jumping away "Blofeld" became unbalanced when brushed by "Rapid Woman", which shifted out.

Near the 800 metres "Pompous" had to be checked when tightened for room, and "Super Suave" was hampered due to both horses being tightened for room by "Prince Bellair" which, after initially shifting in, was taken in by "Catango" (C. Symons), which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. After taking into account all the circumstances, and as the Stewards had some doubt whether C. Symons was fully responsible for the initial stages of the tightening, they took no action other than to severely reprimand him, and notified him that he must exercise the utmost care when shifting ground in future.

After passing the 200 metres "Provaage", which had been held up for a short distance, had to change course to obtain a clear run.

Race 6 - JADE SOFTWARE CORPORATION HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

Near the 600 metres "Preferential" shifted in and brushed the running rail, and then shifted out and tightened "Light of Day" out on to "Vegas Show".

Shortly after this incident "Preferential", which had become unbalanced, shifted out and hampered "Light of Day".

J. Patton, rider of "Preferential", explained to the Stewards that his mount had not felt comfortable at any stage of the race today, and after the tightening in the middle stages failed to respond to his riding. A veterinary examination of "Preferential" revealed no apparent abnormality.

Race 7 - ROSTER-ON STAFF ROSTERING HANDICAP - 2040 metres:

Rounding the home turn "Sergio (NZ)", which was weakening, shifted out away from "Western Waters", and took "Stealth Knight" out off its course. At this stage "Dantarian" also shifted in. "Star's Jewel" had to ease and change course to avoid the heels of "Stealth Knight", and "Manang (NZ)" was hampered. As the Stewards did not deem one rider to be responsible, they took no action.

Race 8 - ROYAL DISTRICT NURSING SERVICE PLATE - 2040 metres: "Incharge (NZ)" dislodged Michelle Payne at the barriers prior to the start of the race, and galloped for a short distance before being caught by a Clerk of the Course. "Incharge (NZ)" was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. As a result of this the start of the race was delayed.

A veterinary examination of "Denise Margaret (Ire)" , which had weakened over the concluding stages of the race, revealed no apparent abnormality.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of all races today.

ADJOURNED INQUIRY:

An inquiry into the reason for "Ole Chum", when ineligible, being nominated for the Royal District Nursing Service Plate - Race 8 - was adjourned to a date to be fixed. Clause 23B. D. Kitto.
