Touted early in his career as the best horse ever trained by the experienced horseman Tommy Hughes, Delago Brom worked home strongly to down the early leader Great Glen.

The colt's trainer Tommy Hughes is currently laid up in the Western Private Hospital after a stomach operation earlier this week.

Hughes Jnr said after the race that Delago Brom, a son of the leading Victorian sire Encosta de Lago, was likely to form a two pronged attack for the family in the Group Two Ascot Vale Stakes.

Hughes said he would sit down and discuss options for Delago Brom with his father and the horse's connections.

"He's a very exciting horse and right from day one he always showed us plenty (of ability)," Hughes said.

Delago Brom, who raced midfield for much of the event, was having his first start since finishing a three length second to Pillaging in the Group One VRC Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington in mid-March.

The connections of the runner-up Great Glen were pleased with the performance of the Adelaide Group winner.

"He just wanted to race a bit keen early and then he was left a sitting duck," rider Patrick Payne said.

Meanwhile, Lee Freedman the trainer of the third placegetter Broadband, was more than pleased with the effort of his galloper.

"All systems are go for the Guineas, that is the plan anyway," Freedman said. "I was very pleased with today's effort, he hit the line really well."

At the post a long head separated the first two horses, while the Lee Freedman trained Broadband was an eye catching third. King Wells battled hard to finish fourth just ahead of the in form Acee Deecee.
