Race 1 - King Valley Wine Region Maiden Plate

Eight runners lined up in the first with Determinator a handsome son of Zabeel trained at Caulfield by Cliff Brown starting the logical favorite. Nobody was keen to lead so Ernie Marchant on Love Mode dictated the pace. On straightening they appeared to have the race at their mercy but it changed complexion in the last 50m. The challenges came thick and fast resulting in Blevmick (Blevic-Countess Nureyev) ridden by Brian Johns to get up in the last stride ahead of the John Symons trained Desert Traveller (Desert King-Point to the Stars) with Lady Meryl (Kingston Rule-Stunning Crystal) third. Love Mode battled back missing 3rd in a photo and ear marked herself as one to watch in a similar race.

Corowa trainer Geoff Duryea gives Blevmick a well deserved drink after his win. The owners Ken and Sandra Moar from Berrigan were excited with the win. Blevmick is the result of their first attempt at breeding after buying 2 mares that were in foal to Blevic 6 years ago. Blevmick now boasts 11 starts for 1-2-1 while the other mare produced them Regal Hawk also a winner of 3 races to date. Their association with Geoff goes back to the days when he was stable jockey for the powerful Bert Honeychurch stable. He is now a very respected trainer in the district based at Corowa. Geoff and his wife Maureen never fail to bring their horses to the races looking fit and healthy. If you’re looking for a trainer in this area keep them in mind.
