Black And Bent Wins On The Flat

Black And BentBlack And Bent stretched his winning streak to four after winning the $70,000 Gillies Famous Pies Country Cup 0-89 (3000m) at Moonee Valley this afternoon.

Ridden by Mark Pegus after replacing Mark Zahra, Black And Bent settled in eighth position before Michelle Payne went for home at the 600 metre mark aboard Titch.

With the field starting to break-up, the runs appeared for Pegus who allowed his mount to loom up to Titch on the home turn.

Black And Bent ($2.80-$3-$2.60 fav) had far too much in reserve and defeated Titch ($4-$5.50) by two and three-quarter lengths with Mr Riggs ($11-$13) a further one and a half lengths away in third.

Scenic Buss ($21-$26) finished fourth while Family Bliss ($10-$13) finished fifth.

Robert Smerdon“He’s a beauty, everything we have put in front of him he has handled well,” Smerdon said.

“He is a very fit horse going well, on the minimum, soft conditions everything suited him.

“12 months ago he couldn’t do anywhere near this, he had a really tough preparation as a late three-year-old and early four-year-old and he has come back and taken all before him,” he added.

Black And Bent will now head towards the $101,000 Australian Hurdle (3400m) at Sandown on June 19.
