Evans Case Adjourned Till August

Jamie Evans

Former leading Victorian jumps jockey Jamie Evans will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court again in August after his case was adjourned yesterday.

Evans, 41, was in the Assessment and Referral Court - a new division of the Magistrates’ Court - yesterday on individual charges of trespass, theft and being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

It stems from an incident in March where Evans was arrested for allegedly ordering a meal at La Porchetta in Mill Park without paying.

A month later, Evans was arrested at a Coles supermarket in Dandenong. He was accused of trespass with intent to steal and was also charged with being drunk in a public place.

Evans entered no plea at yesterday’s hearing with the case adjourned for August 16.

Its not the first time Evans has fallen foul of the law.

In January 2008, Evans was fined $800 by the Magistrates’ Court after consuming alcohol and ordering food without paying the bill twice at two inner-city restaurants in the space of 24 hours.

A self-confessed alcoholic, Evans was a star in the saddle winning feature jumps races such as the Grand National Hurdle, Hiskens Steeplechase, Great Eastern Steeplechase and Grand Annual Steeplechase on multiple occasions.

His last biggest victory was aboard Enzed in the 2005 Grand National Hurdle at Flemington.

Only weeks later aboard the same horse, his riding career came to an abrupt holt after a shocking fall in the Hiskens Steeplechase at Moonee Valley left him with a collapsed disc in his lower back and leg injures.
