Bright Future For Retrieve

Craig NewittPaul Snowden predicts there are “bigger things in store” for Retrieve following his victory at the Geelong Synthetic on Tuesday.

The two-year-old colt was having his third start this afternoon in the $12,000 GRC Function Centre Maiden Plate (1300m) after finishing third last start at Moonee Valley, under a half length from the winner Spirited Eagle.

Ridden positively out of the gates by Craig Newitt, Retrieve settled forward of midfield before Newitt pushed the son of Rahy into the one-one position prior to leaving the back straight.

Retrieve stalked the leaders before chasing stubborn pacemaker Lopov in the straight. He eventually gained the lead in the final 100 metres of the race to win eased down on the line.

Retrieve ($1.90-$1.65 fav) defeated the Danny O’Brien-trained Lopov ($4.80-$12) by ¾ lengths with Demigod ($10-$12) a further 2-3/4 lengths away in third.

“To his credit as well, he (Newitt) has probably made a couple of runs on the horse just to keep him out of trouble so it probably told at the end,” Snowden said.

Paul Snowden“He had a really hard run first-up (at Moonee Valley) and we hadn’t done a lot with him up until today so he was entitled to get a little tired at the end.”

Newitt described Retrieve as “impressive” but said the win could have been more flattering had the horse attacked the line truly.

“He never put them away like I thought he would but I don’t think he knew he had to,” Newitt said.

“He travelled good and he went up to them like he was going to blow them away but when he got there...he is a little bit green still so later on he’s probably going to want the shades (blinkers).

“Today it was a moderate field but he put them away good,” he added.

Newitt also believes we will see the best of Retrieve once he steps up in distance.

Meanwhile, the Mick Price-trained full-brother to Heart Of Dreams, Dreams To Silk ($5), settled in sixth position - three back along the rails - but never appeared to travel tractably for Nick Hall and finished at the tail of the field alongside unraced stablemate Untoward ($13).
