Consistent Lass Causes Boilover

Punters at Moonee Valley endured a tough start to the day after outsider Dutchy’s Lass won the $70,000 MVRC Saves Water Handicap (1200m) for two-year-olds.

Trained by the Bendigo-based Shaun Dwyer, Dutchy’s Lass raced outside early leader and last start winner Someday Somehow on settling down.

With only a moderate tempo established in the lead, it turned into a sprint home from the 500 metre mark as Someday Somehow was collared by Dutchy’s Lass with Broadcast and Barangaroo chiming in out wide.

In an epic three way finish, Dutchy’s Lass, Broadcast and Barangaroo hit the line simultaneously with the judge ruling in favour of Dutchy’s Lass.

Dutchy’s Lass ($21-$26) defeated Broadcast ($2.90-$3.70 fav) by a nose with Barangaroo ($6-$7-$4.60) a similar margin away in third.

Hollowlea ($15-$18) never gained a clear run in the straight and finished hard held on their heels in fourth, a further 1-1/4 lengths away.

“She just gave a little kick when they got near me which was good enough,” winning jockey Glen Boss said.

“I rode her last start (eighth at Flemington) and I said to Shaun that she threw her plate and when she through her plate in soft conditions – she didn’t travel well underneath me,”

“I just told him to totally disregard last time.

“I suspected she’d prove hard to beat if everything went her way and I was proven right,” he added.

Dutchy's Lass is by Dutch Harry and is the first foal out of dam Southampton who won only one race - an 800m maiden at Ipswich - from five starts.

A winner of two from five starts, Dutchy’s Lass has only finished out of the placings once and has consequently accumulated over $70,000 in prizemoney.
