Diazling Dazzles At Moonee Valley

Luke OliverCaulfield trainer Luke Oliver got special satisfaction from lightly-raced filly Diazling when she posted her first city win at Moonee Valley.

The daughter of Sequalo was the first yearling Oliver had ever bought and gave him one of his biggest thrills when she defied a betting drift from $6 to $8 to score in Saturday's Leslie Short Memorial Handicap (1600m).

"She is a special horse this one," Oliver said.

"I always liked her."

Ridden by Craig Williams, Diazling was held up for a run rounding the home turn before peeling out behind the leader Mousseline and scoring a half-head win over The Night's Hot with Miss Phromily 1-3/4 lengths away third.

Diazling cost $23,000 and was the only yearling Oliver bought at the Magic Millions sale.

"I had enough money to buy one horse and I knew the mother (Miss Diaz) of this horse quite well as some family friends owned her," Oliver said.

"She (Diazling) was only small but we liked her and took the punt."

Miss Diaz won five races including three in Melbourne and was also second in the 2003 Benalla Cup.

Diazling won her race debut at Horsham at her only run in her first race campaign last December and is the second winning foal from Miss Diaz.

This campaign Diazling has raced four times and telegraphed she was ready to win in the city when third at Sandown last start.

"We have taken our time with her and looked after her," Oliver said.

"She's always shown a lot at home and to her credit she has made that next step."

However Oliver doesn't have big plans for her just yet and is content to send her for a spell now and bring her back for a light summer preparation and another winter campaign next year.

"She is a very good wet tracker but I reckon that will do her this preparation," Oliver said.
