Player Puts On Solid Display At Cranbourne

Danny BreretonRace experience ensured two-year-old gelding Marquee Player put on a professional performance for racegoers at Cranbourne on Sunday.

Trained by Colin and Cindy Alderson, Marquee Player finished sixth in a Bendigo two-year-old maiden in March over 1000 metres before being sent to the spelling paddock.

The son of Canny Lad made his reappearance today in the $15,000 Myer Maiden Plate (1000m) for two-year-olds.

Bursting out of the barriers, Marquee Player shared the lead with My Frozen Assets by racing at his outside.

Rounding the home bend the duo were joined by Java Jack and Electronic Lan but Marquee Player found an extra gear to pull clear inside the final furlong.

Marquee Player ($6-$5 eq fav) defeated Java Jack ($4.20-$5 eq fav) by 1-1/4 lengths with Electronic Lan ($3.20-$6) battling away bravely after being set alight by Craig Williams prior to the home turn.

Winning jockey Danny Brereton was impressed by Marquee Player’s performance.

“He’s showed some fighting qualities this horse,” Brereton said.

“He got there (in the lead) quite easy and then they attacked us and I thought they might have got him unbalanced.

“But he found and it was a good win.

“We knew he liked the going,” he said before adding, “We were just unsure how strong the race was but I think he’s a fair horse.”

Marquee Player was purchased for $27,500 at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. He is out of Danehill dam Fredericia who only won an Orange Class 1 Handicap over 2100 metres from a 13 start career.
