Sunline gave Sydney a taste of things to come when she outclassed her opposition in a barrier trial at Randwick this morning.

"Apparently she went very well," said Trevor McKee from his Takanini home. "She won by about four lengths in 1:14, which was easily the fastest time of the session."

McKee will swap places with his son Stephen when he flies to Sydney on Monday, in time to witness her Tuesday morning gallop.

"Now she'll just need the one decent hitout to take her through to next Saturday," he said.

Sunline will bid to equal Kingston Town's record of 14 Group 1 wins when she lines up in the George Main Stakes at Randwick.

The last time she ran at Sydney racing headquarters, in April, she waltzed away with the All Aged Stakes. That followed her momentous Doncaster Handicap victory over Shogun Lodge.

WEATHER : FINE
TRACK : GOOD
RAIL : OUT 6M 1000M – TURN, CUTAWAY RAIL IN USE

GENERAL : The start of Race 1 was delayed by approximately 30 minutes due to the Stewards direction that the running rail approaching the 1000m be re-aligned.

RACE ONE –CLASS FOUR HANDICAP 1614 METRES

App C Franklin (TRIPLE MAC) said that after the 1000m his mount commenced to over-race badly, obliging him to go forward although being caught four horses wide to the home turn. He said that after the race it was noted that the tongue tie had slipped and was particularly tight around the geldings tongue, leading him to feel that it may have got its tongue over the bit. As a result TRIPLE MAC weakened from about the 300m. A veterinary examination revealed no abnormality. As a result of the delay to this race the following schedule changes were made – Race 2 – 1.48 pm, Race 3 – 2.17 pm and Race 4 – 2.43 pm.

RACE TWO –ENTIRES & GELDINGS CLASS TWO HANDICAP 1012 METRES

SVALBARD was slow to begin. On jumping PAPAL PRINCE and YUKON MINER lost ground when crowded between ORCHID BOY and SLICK GURU, both of which shifted ground. Near the 700m PRIME OF LIFE was steadied off the heels of SLICK GURU, becoming unbalanced and shifting out, carrying HASTY REGENT out. This resulted in ORCHID BOY clipping the heels of HASTY REGENT and shifting out abruptly, causing REDSCAY to be severely hampered and carried very wide. When questioned App C Franklin (PAPAL PRINCE) said that after his mount was crowded at the start it took some time to get properly balanced and did not show the expected early speed. He said he rode the gelding along throughout but it did not commence to make ground until nearing the 400m, adding that it had run on very strongly over the concluding stages of the race. He opined that PAPAL PRINCE may now be better placed at a distance longer than todays.

RACE THREE – MAIDEN PLATE 810 METRES

After being boxed BAD BAD THING became restless, reared and struck its head. It was withdrawn on veterinary advice at 2.19 pm. Subsequently Stewards ordered all bets on BAD BAD THING be refunded and that successful bets made prior to the withdrawal be paid subject to deductions of 5c win and 6c place in the dollar on the face value of the ticket. Trainer Mr N Nelson will be told that a warning will be placed on the barrier manners of BAD BAD THING. AUSSIE DOLLAR was slow to begin. MOSBY began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped IRISH HENRY heavily, causing it to become unbalanced. HALF A QUID raced greenly in the straight.

RACE FOUR –CLASS ONE HANDICAP 1314 METRES

K Bell replaced A Nicholls (indisposed) as the rider of TYCOON PALACE. DUGAN DAN and TYCOON PALACE were slow to begin.

RACE SIX –MAIDEN HANDICAP 1314 METRES

On jumping A NEW SHILLING and STRATEGIC STAR lost ground when crowded between GREY ECLIPSE and RIBBONWOOD, both of which shifted ground. BELLMISTER was slow to begin and near the 700m it was carried wide by CASH ON LOAN, which was over-racing and had to checked off the heels of BURGUNDY BEAU. SHOT OF NATURALISM began awkwardly and lost ground. In the early part of the straight A NEW SHILLING was held up for clear running and near the 75m had to be shifted out abruptly to improve. App T Yeung (COUNTRY BOY) was reprimanded for returning to scale excessively overweight.

RACE SEVEN –CLASS FOUR HANDICAP 1214 METRES

App C Franklin replaced J Becker as the rider of NOBLE JAASI. Near the 250m MYMARDIE was eased when crowded between FORCEFULLY, which was giving ground, and CAMPAIGNOR (App T Yeung) which shifted in when not clear. App Yeung was reprimanded.

RACE EIGHT –FILLIES & MARES CLASS TWO HANDICAP 1012 METRES

STAR OF PYRMONT was a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 12.35 pm after it was injured in the float on the way to the course. Just as the start was effected NEWBOLD COUNTESS became restless, left the gates awkwardly and lost considerable ground. Stable representative Mr P Sinclair was told that a warning will be placed on the barrier manners of NEWBOLD COUNTESS. DANEMOUNTAIN MISS was a little slow away and was then crowded between CAT LADY and INTERPOSE.

Takas the Jackass Throws Away Spring Stakes

In form galloper Takas handed the Group Three Spring Stakes to rival three-year-old Clangalang when he blew the start in the time honoured event.

Starting a firm second favourite, behind the promising Melbourne colt Rohatyn, Takas reared as the gates opened and missed the start by more than five lengths.

Despite having to work hard in the early and middle stages of the race, Takas still managed to over haul a handful of his rivals to grab third place ahead of the heavily backed Rohatyn.

Recruiting looked as though he was going to cause a major upset when he dashed clear of his rivals to set up a handy break on straightening, but he was unable to hold out the finishing challenge of the Gerald Ryan trained Clangalang.

The consistent son of Clang was given a good ride off the pace by the Manikato Stakes villain Scott Seamer, who then switched the colt off heels and he swept past the leader in the twinkling of an eye.

It was a welcome change of luck for Seamer who made it a race to race double after the previous race success on Real Silence in a blanket finish. He then had to retain the race when a protest was fired in by the runner-up.

Connections of Clangalang will be hoping their horse will follow in the footsteps of previous Spring Stakes winners including Universal Prince, who have gone on to bigger and better things since their Group success at Broadmeadow.

Consideration was given to an objection lodged by G Ryan rider of the second placed BOURBON BLEU against H Bowman (HANG ON SOUPY) being declared the winning alleging interference near the 1200m. r3bartcummings.jpg (10747 bytes)Epsom Handicap dreams for the Bart Cummings trained Cognac Trader were sensationally dashed at Newcastle today when that galloper bled in the listed Cameron Handicap.

A winner of two of his five starts prior to today’s 1400 metre event, Cognac Trader needed to win today’s race to force his way into the Epsom field, but instead he will be watching from the spelling paddock.

As it is his first attack, Cognac Trader was slapped with the mandatory three month ban.

The news was worse for the handy Gary Portelli trained performer Salim’s Tip who bled for the second time in the same race.

That galloper is now banned from racing in the country for life.

Time Off has helped erase some of the disappointment for the performance of the stablemate Takas in the Spring Stakes, by scoring a hard earned win in today's Group Three Newcastle Gold Cup.

After settling just behind the leaders for much of the race, last season's Sydney premiership winning jockey Corey Brown was able to stoke to gelding up in the straight to set up a break and then hold out the Gai Waterhouse trained Red Trinket.

A winner of only three of his previous 21 starts, Time Off managed to win the 2300 metre event by a neck over the well fancied favourite.

Third home was the evergreen Gerald Ryan trained Danyon, who was a further one and a quarter lengths back from the first pair.

Time Off was stepping up some 500 metres from his last start when he finished a five length fifth in an 1800 metre Open Handicap behind Kreisler's Jewel at Randwick.

Espressoholic jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 100m Dolphicate, which had been held up, improved into a tight run between Storm Centre and Maximise, which, at the same time, shifted in slightly resulting in Storm Centre being steadied. Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to good at 1.07pm.

RACE 2: John Sneddon Plate (Provincial Class 1 & Maiden) 2300m:

Flying Fancy was held up until about the 200m. When questioned about the disappointing performance of Bangaroo, C. Brown explained that the only opinion he could offer was that he felt the gelding did not run out the 2300m journey. A post-race veterinary examination of Bangaroo did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr K. Lees stated that Bangaroo had worked well in the lead-up to today’s race and was expected to run accordingly. Mr Lees undertook to report to the Stewards if there was anything amiss with Bangaroo in the days subsequent.

RACE 3: Nadin West Joinery Plate (Maiden) 900m:

Even Run and Yarrabin Prince were slow to begin. In the middle stages Mystic Miss and Svelte Embrace hung out badly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Mystic Miss was lame in the near-fore leg. Trainer Mr F. Cleary was advised that a veterinary certificate must be produced before Mystic Miss is permitted to race again. Near the 700m Incarnation got its head up and shifted out when being steadied to avoid the heels of Burn (G. Buckley), which shifted in when not quite clear. G. Buckley was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. After improving to the inside of Miss Natural near the 300m Carry On Mate raced tight for some distance to the inside of that runner and then near the 100m was steadied when Miss Natural shifted back in. In the straight Incarnation was inclined to lay out under pressure. On a number of occasions in the straight Even Run had to shift out under pressure to continue in clear running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Burn was mildly sore in front. Trainer Mr T. Donnelly undertook to report to the Stewards on the condition of Burn in the days subsequent.

RACE 4: M & H Air Handicap (Class 2) 1600m:

RACE 5: Sharp Electronics Hurricane Quality Handicap 900m:

Vidual and Leander Hall bumped on straightening.

RACE 6: Wenham Builders Handicap (Class 4) 1850m:

J. Cassidy (Diamond Rhythm) explained that the gelding was not suited by being forward at its most recent start at Warwick Farm on 3 September. He added that the instructions today were consistent with those given on that date and with the extra journey today he endeavoured to ride Diamond Rhythm back in the field in the hope the gelding would finish off the race.

RACE 7: Hunter Star Motors Cameron Handicap 1400m:

Excellerator was slow to begin. Near the 200m Excellerator was steadied and shifted out across the heels of Gentle Genius to obtain clear running. Over the last 100m Mowerman laid in under pressure. Over the concluding stages Hey Pronto shifted in under pressure. It was reported that Salim’s Tip had bled. Trainer Mr G. Portelli was advised that as this was the second occasion on which Salim’s Tip had bled the gelding will now be barred from racing (AR53A). It was reported that Cognac Trader had bled for the first time. Mr A. Cummings, representing trainer Mr J. B. Cummings, was advised that Cognac Trader will incur the mandatory three-month ban from racing (AR53A).

RACE 8: Moraitis Group Tibbie Plate (Fillies & Mares) 1400m:

History Maker jumped awkwardly. After being crossed by History Maker approaching the 1000m Paris Heartbeat got its head up, shifted out and commenced to overrace. Weather: Fine
Track: Good

GENERAL:

The Stewards acceded to a request from trainer Mr S. Englebrecht, master of App. M. Howarth, to increase the minimum riding weight for App. Howarth to 53kg. Mr Englebrecht advised the Stewards that App. Howarth had been stood down from taking rides until he can achieve this weight. Mr Englebrecht was advised that should App. Howarth accept rides and not be able to fulfil those engagements he could expect to have imposed heavy fines and possibly a suspension of his riding permit.

C. Munce was found guilty of a charge under AR83(a) in that following the running of race 3, Street Real Estate Handicap (Class 2) 1400m in the jockeys’ room he made contact with the lower region under the right eye of Andrew Gibbons with his right hand. C. Munce was fined $1,000. In assessing penalty the Stewards considered C. Munce’s conduct over a number of years and his standing as a leading jockey.

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

As N. Seymour was indisposed due to illness Stewards permitted the following replacements:
Race 2 B. Cooper on Sir Glisk (No. 14)
Race 3 C. Agnew on Strabo (No. 7)
Race 8 P. Losh on Sunset Gift (No. 10)

RACE 1: Hudson Timber & Hardware Plate (Maiden) 1300m:

Minchinbury, which had been fractious in the gates, jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Tua Man overraced in the early and middle stages. Near the 700m The Cedars had to be checked when tightened for room between Parable, which was overracing and shifted out slightly, and Miss Tuppence (B. Pengelly), which shifted in. B. Pengelly was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Parable continued to overrace in the middle stages. Minchinbury lay in under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Minchinbury did not reveal any abnormality. Trainer Mr G. Ryan was asked to report to the Stewards if there was anything amiss with Minchinbury in the days subsequent. Near the 100m Gold Rush had to be steadied from the heels of Middlebrook, which shifted in.

RACE 2: Mountain Industries Handicap (Class 1) 1200m:

On jumping Echo Chamber was hampered between Go Volare and Beautiful Dragon, both of which shifted ground. Annunaki got its head up and as a result made the first turn awkwardly. Annunaki continued to overrace in the middle stages. App. J. Ford could offer no tangible excuse for the performance of Eupe Mgoo. He stated that when put under pressure at the entrance to the straight the gelding failed to respond to his riding.

RACE 3: Street Real Estate Handicap (Class 2) 1400m:

Powderfinger was slow to begin. In the middle stages Barista overraced and had to be steadied from the heels of Punton Danehill. C. Munce (Cooder) explained that his instructions today were consistent with those issued at Wyong on 5 September, which were to have Cooder racing where comfortable. He added that today from barrier 9, after receiving early tightening, Cooder raced further back than at its previous two starts and was further hampered when Barista shifted in on the first turn near the 1000m.

RACE 4: Falk Australia Plate (Provincial 4yo & Upwards Class 4) 1600m:

App. C. Karakatsanis (Jordan’s Taboo) was reprimanded for use of the whip on a horse out of contention (AR137A(2)(b).

RACE 5: Australia Post Country Cup 1200m:

Magic Duck, which got down in the float en route to the racecourse, was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. An objection was lodged by H. Bowman, rider of 2nd placegetter, Shockeroo, against Real Silence (S. Seamer) being declared the winner alleging interference over the concluding stages. After viewing the official patrol video and interviewing the parties concerned, the Stewards found that approaching the 50m Shockeroo raced in restricted room between Shy Hero, which shifted out slightly under pressure, and Real Silence, which shifted in under pressure. Stewards were of the opinion that the initial contact to Shockeroo resulted from Shy Hero shifting out and, therefore, as the interference could not be directly attributed to Real Silence they dismissed the objection and declared correct weight. S. Seamer (Real Silence) and D. Nikolic (Shy Hero) were reminded of their obligation to prevent their mounts from shifting ground when not clear. On jumping Citi Fella and Shockeroo were badly buffeted between Intrepid Boy, which was taken out by Shy Hero, and Real Silence, which shifted in. In this incident P. Hammersley (Citi Fella) became badly unbalanced and was almost dislodged and Citi Fella lost considerable ground. At the entrance to the straight See The Gold had to be steadied off the heels of Marfoo (G. Boss), which shifted out. G. Boss was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Shy Hero had difficulty obtaining a clear run in the early part of the straight. Real Silence was held up for clear running until near the 200m. Shoemaker was badly held up for a run until near the 50m. G. Boss (Marfoo Star) stated that the gelding overraced throughout the event and subsequently did not finish off the race. Trainer Mr D. Prosser will be asked to report on the future program of Marfoo Star.

RACE 6: Hahn Premium Spring Stakes (3yo Group 3) 1600m:

Due to a power failure at the barriers, the start of this race was effected manually. Stewards directed that the starts of the remaining events be effected manually. Before declaration of correct weight Stewards viewed the start after Takas lost considerable ground. After interviewing Starter Mr B. Evans, barrier attendant Mr P. Burns, rider D. Beadman and stable foreman Mr P. Snowden Stewards declared Takas a starter when it was established that the colt reared as the gates opened and lost considerable ground. Following an injury sustained when Takas reared in the barrier on jumping, D. Beadman was stood down by the club’s doctor. Stewards permitted the following replacements: S. Pollard on Pantani and N. Cumberland on Sir Redford in race 8. Maverick had to be steadied when Best Score attempted to improve between that runner and Clangalang, which shifted out slightly near the 300m. Red Trinket and Feed The Meter did not obtain clear running in the straight. Stewards will interview L. A significant drop back in class was enough for the Malcolm Johnston trained Shags to bounce back to the winner’s stall in fine fashion to win the $30,000 Sharp Hurricane Quality Handicap (900m) at Newcastle today.

Shags, a four-year-old entire by Strategic, was having just his second race start this time in. First up he beat only one runner home in Fouardee’s Concorde Stakes, in a race where he dashed clear of his rivals at the top of the straight before being claimed by most of the field in the run to the line.

Johnston was confident the entire would return to the winner’s circle today with the big drop back in class.

"After he won that race at Hawkesbury (the Guineas) I probably stepped him up too fast," Johnston said.

After settling just off the frantic pace winning jockey Glen Boss was able to switch the four-year-old between runners and he then pounced on the lead before drawing away for a strong three length win.
