BeltroisTrainer Robbie Griffiths is prepared to overlook an inconclusive leadup run and remains optimistic that Beltrois can get the job done in The Goodwood at Morphettville on Sunday.

Griffiths was hoping that the Pink Ribbon Cup (1200m) at Caulfield two weeks ago would give him a guide on Beltrois' Goodwood chances but he came away from the race no wiser after the gelding got hopelessly pocketed and finished 13th.

"The run was really inconclusive," Griffiths said.

"When they finish so far back you can't say they should have won but he would have been in the finish for sure.

"He never got a whiff of a chance. The only way he was going to get out of the pocket was with a helicopter."

Beltrois has been specifically aimed at the Goodwood (1200m) since last summer when he was second to Royal Ida in the Group Three Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington and won the Listed L T Cleary Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

The Pink Ribbon was only his second run this campaign after an encouraging third behind Definitely Ready and Al's Best Mate at Caulfield on April 3.

"His first-up run was really good and his work has been good so I wouldn't let his unplaced run deter people from following him," Griffiths said.

Beltrois remains one of TAB Sportsbet's top fancies for the Goodwood at $10 behind highly promising sprinter Catapulted from the Mark Kavanagh yard, who is the $3.20 favourite, and Velocitea at $7.

A winner of seven of his 11 starts, Catapulted stormed into this campaign with a stunning 2-1/2 length victory in the traditional Goodwood leadup, the Group Three McKay Stakes (1100m).

Boardwalk Angel (1989) was the last of five horses to land the McKay-Goodwood double in the same year.

The others were Lord Galaxy (1986), Comaida Boy (1979), Wise Virgin (1973) and Grey John (1969).

Kavanagh said Catapulted had earned his place in the Group One feature and expected he would be competitive.

"It is a set weight and penalties race so he is up the top end of the weight scale (55.5kg) but he has done well," Kavanagh said.

"He has got a pretty good record so we will see how we go."

Irish apprentice Ronan Keogh will represent Tasmania in the National Apprentices' Series in Adelaide on Wednesday.

Keogh, who has been indentured to trainer Julie Richards since October last year, is Tasmania's leading apprentice this season with 25 winners.

His biggest win came aboard the Troy Blacker-trained Dream Pedlar in the weight-for-age Listed Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) at Hobart last December.

"I'm quite excited about riding in the series and it is very much an honour to be representing Tasmania," Keogh said.

The apprentices' series comprises two races on the eight-event card at Morphettville Parks.

The riders in the series are allocated horses by ballot and Keogh will partner the Wally Bencic-trained Don Paco in the first leg, the Super Sunday May 2nd Hcp (1250m).

The gelding has drawn the rails and will be returning from a let-up after finishing third over 1600m at Ballarat in February.

Keogh will partner Bianium for David Jolly in the Allan Scott Park Morphettville Hcp (1400m) with the last start Murray Bridge placegetter to jump from gate nine.

"I'll be doing my best for Tassie," Keogh said.

Keogh had a three-month stint in Tasmania early last year before heading back to Ireland to tidy up personal matters and negotiate a permanent visa.

He rode 12 winners in the UK before making his move to Australia.

Keogh rides at 53kg and is eligible to claim 3kg on metropolitan tracks.

Fellow three kilo claimer Josh Adams, who is apprenticed to Garry Frazer at Hawkesbury, will represent NSW in the series.

The youngster has ridden more than 100 winners and has drawn to partner Under The Radar in the opening leg and Artacus in the 1400m race.

Other junior riders participating include top Adelaide apprentice Claudia Lions and Stacey Rawiller, sister of jockeys Nash and Brad Rawiller.

Zarita Retired To Stud

ZaritaOutstanding mare Zarita has been retired after failing to live up to expectations in Saturday's Group Two Queen Of The South Stakes at Morphettville.

The dual Group One winner ran fifth as the short-priced favourite, beaten less than 1-1/2 lengths in the 1600m fillies and mares feature won by Returntosender.

In a moderately run race, Zarita was midfield throughout in the 10-horse field.

"She didn't run home as well as we would have liked her to," said trainer Pat Hyland.

"The last 100 metres was the best part of her race but at the end of the day it wasn't up to what she can do."

Hyland, who also trained the smart filly Saleous to win two Group One races - the 1995 VRC Oaks and the 1996 STC Ansett Australia Stakes - said Zarita was the best horse he had prepared.

Raced by the Frost family, five-year-old Zarita had 33 starts for nine wins and seven placings and more than $1.65 million prize money.

By Pentire out of the Defensive Play mare Gin Player, Zarita won the 2008 Australasian Oaks (2000m) and the South Australian Derby (2500m) as a three-year-old.

She also won five Group Two races, the most recent being the Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley three starts ago in February.

Two of her career best performances were when she finished fourth to Maldivian in the 2008 Cox Plate and fourth to Niconero in the 2009 Australian Cup, beaten only 1-1/2 lengths on each occasion.

The mare will go to stud this spring but no decision on which stallion she'll be mated with has been made at this stage.

Hayes Zeros In On First SA Derby

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/43049-hayes-zeros-in-on-first-sa-derby.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/270210/r8extrazero1_ft.jpg desc=David Hayes is confident he can win his first SA Derby with Extra Zero despite the colt having been beaten... size=small}

Extra ZeroDavid Hayes is confident he can win his first SA Derby with Extra Zero despite the colt having been beaten twice in Classics this season.

Hayes said Extra Zero, who was second to Monaco Consul in the Victoria Derby, was now "in the zone" after his last start fifth to Shoot Out in the AJC Australian Derby.

"I actually think he will win on Sunday," Hayes said.

"The horse is flying."

The colt would give Hayes his second Derby win in eight days after stablemate Chartreux won last Saturday's WA Classic at Ascot.

Extra Zero has been a consistent performer in the major three-year-old races this season but has only won two of his 14 starts.

As a two-year-old he took out the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) at Flemington and four starts ago he beat Absolute Faith in the Group Two Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield.

Some of his best performances were last spring when he was beaten a short half-head by Carrara in the Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley and finished fourth to Starspangledbanner in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

But it is as a stayer that Hayes has had the highest hopes for Extra Zero and his two Derby performances have been full of merit.

Hayes says the key is to get Extra Zero to relax and he believes his charge will do that in the SA Derby with Glen Boss retaining the mount after riding him in the AJC Derby.

"He pulled too hard in Sydney and with that run under his belt he has just come into the zone," Hayes said.

He said he could see Extra Zero rebounding from his AJC Australian Derby defeat in the same way as Chartreux trained on from his second to Rundle in the Galilee Series Final (2500m) at Flemington before he won the WA Derby.

"What I liked about him (Extra Zero) in Sydney was that he pulled hard and he battled on," Hayes said.

"The problem with Chartreux at Flemington was he pulled hard and battled on but when he relaxed he won (the Derby)."

Extra Zero is $13 with TAB Sportsbet to win the SA Derby, as is stablemate Token Of Honour.

Last start Token Of Honour was an eye-catching second to Red Colossus in Adelaide's traditional Derby leadup, the Listed Chairman's Stakes (2014m), but Hayes can't see him beating Extra Zero.

"He's a good first three chance but I'd be surprised if he can beat Extra Zero," Hayes said.

Red Colossus is the $4.60 second favourite for the Derby while Chairman's Stakes third placegetter Kidnapped is the $3.70 favourite.

Promising three-year-old Golden Jaguar will finally get his opportunity to display his staying ability this Saturday in the $70,000 Listed Chairman's TAB Stakes (2014m) at Morphettville.

Trained by Michael Moroney at Flemington, Golden Jaguar should relish the extra trip according to Moroney’s stable foreman Anthony Feroce.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing him race,” Feroce said.

“He’s always shown us that he can stay – he wants to get over ground.

“So he steps up to 2000m on Saturday and he will run very good,” he added.

After breaking his maiden status at his sixth attempt, Golden Jaguar finished a respectable fifth at Caulfield a fortnight ago behind Zantelagh in a 70,000 Three-year-old Handicap (1800m).

All things going well, Golden Jaguar is expected to contest the Group 1 $300,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 2.

By Refuse To Bend, Golden Jaguar is among the oldest Australian progeny of the Irish-bred sire.

He has the opportunity of being Refuse To Bend’s first stakes winner in Australia with only one horse – Ghostnthedarkness trained by Michael Nolan at Toowoomba – the only horse to be stakes placed after finishing third in a Listed two-year-old event at Eagle Farm in December.

Interestingly, Refuse To Bend is the sire of one of Korea’s most talented gallopers with Khaki Halls boasting a record of four wins and four placings from nine starts with over ?134 million in prizemoney.

The dam Love Dust won a two-year-old race at Caulfield on debut and as has produced three foals of which two – including Golden Jaguar – have raced.

Kerilla, a filly by Danroad that was the dam’s other foal to race, finished fourth in the 2009 Group 2 Yallambee Classic (1200m) at Morphettville.

It was ‘ladies day out’ at Murray Bridge races on Wednesday when Libby Hopwood and Claudia Lions rode doubles and Clare Lindop and Tillie Neve rode a winner each.

Recording a neck winning margin in the Hoteliers Race Day May 12 Maiden of 1006 metres and the first win from a career of four starts Ya Don’t Say gave apprentice Libby Hopwood the first leg of her double and Carol Paisley her first success as a trainer.

Starting at $15 the Gallo Di Ferro sired three year old filly from Go Tammy, a Don’t Say Halo mare, Ya Don’t Say settled well and came with a strong outside run over the concluding stages to defeat Zaamission $3 for another local trainer Karen Byrnes and jockey Paul Gatt.

Ta Moko $4-80 was a farther four lengths away filling the minor placing for Colin Graves and Tillie Neve.

Libby Hopwood brought up her second winner when she was astride the one and three quarter length winner Miyako Princess $6 in the Rating 0-62 1606 metre event for mentor Graham Fryer.

From the Key Dancer matron Lucy’s Love and fathered by Fraar Miyako Princess was well served by the start and then, racing three wide, went on to beat the Dennis McMahon cared for apprentice Felicity Ives mount Fast Eddie, the $2.35 pubic elect.

Tarvon $7 was another neck away third for John Dunn and apprentice Krystal Bishop giving the girls a clean sweep in the event.

Riding for her master David Jolly apprentice Claudia Lions scored the first leg of a double when Saint Sha Rose was the three quarters of a length winner of the Carlton Draught Handicap of 1206 metres.

From the Maizcay matron Cornish Miss and sired by Zariz, Saint Sha Rose, who drifted from an opening quote of $3-60 to start at $5, led all the way and defeated the Ray Moore cared for Matthew Neilson ridden Notonmatchday $5. The $7 chance Our Joy was another three quarters of a length away in third placing for Kylie Huxtable and Paul Gatt.

Claudia Lions was again seen n the winner’s circle when the Paul Beshara mentored Kitty Up was the two and a quarter length victor of Race 5 which was run over 1406 metres.

Brad McLeanOn the eve of the 2010 Victorian Jumps Racing season, leading jumps jockey Brad McLean has been stood down with immediate effect after returning a positive sample to an anorectic substance.

McLean produced the sample at Oakbank on their Easter Monday meeting (April 5).

TRSA Stewards have not specified what anorectic substance has been discovered in McLean’s sample.

In the meantime, McLean will not be able to ride in trackwork, trials and races until he provides a sample which is clear of any prohibited substance.

An inquiry into McLean’s sample will be conducted at a date yet to be fixed.

McLean only rode in two races over the Easter Carnival at Oakbank and on both occasions he rode the Ciaron Maher-trained Pentacolo.

Pentacolo carried 68kg when second in the $100,000 Von Doussa Steeple (3250m) on April 3 and then rode one kilo heavier two days later in the $166,000 Scott Group of Companies Great Eastern Steeplechase (4950m).

McLean was not booked to ride any runners at Hamilton this upcoming weekend.

McLean’s positive sample comes almost a fortnight after it was revealed fellow jumps jockey Paul Hamblin failed a breath test at Oakbank the same day.

Prior to the first race Hamblin provided a sample which exceeded the .02% blood alcohol limit permitted for jockeys.

As a result, Hamblin was stood down from his commitments for the remainder of the day and at a later stewards hearing he was suspended for 27 days and fined $5,000.
