Damaged trackWednesday’s meeting at Gawler came to an premature halt after a heavy storm descended across the track mid-meeting.

Today was the first meeting at Gawler since the track was subject to a $13 million redevelopment and it was officially opened by South Australian Premier Mike Rann.

However after the fourth race was completed, which was won by the Roslyn Day-trained Winehouse, the meeting was abandoned by TRSA stewards due to the state of the track.

One industry participant, who did not wished to be named, told the Virtual Formguide this evening that the track needs time to settle and he was surprised the meeting was not transferred elsewhere earlier in the week.

The new Gawler circuit looks considerably better then its predecessor with sweeping bends and a longer home straight obvious features of the racetrack.

The next meeting scheduled for Gawler is in two weeks time on July 29, two days before the Listed Dermody Stakes on the final day of the 2009/10 season.

Rebel Raider On Cup Trail

Rebel RaiderThe loss of one of his most promising horses in a road accident has not dampened Adelaide trainer Leon Macdonald's enthusiasm about Melbourne Cup contender Rebel Raider.

One of the stable's rising three-year-olds was hit by a taxi outside Morphettville racetrack last week and subsequently put down.

The area outside the track is signposted but Macdonald and his fellow trainers will meet with the local council this week to determine if more can be done to alert drivers to horse traffic.

"He was an unnamed two year old and a lovely little horse," Macdonald said.

"We've got a council meeting this week - I don't know what we are going to do, but hopefully something can be done.

"It was very unfortunate."

On the bright side, Rebel Raider is steadily working towards fulfilling Macdonald's Melbourne Cup dream and will resume racing next month.

One of the early favourites for last year's Cup, the dual Derby winner suffered a leg injury at trackwork a day after weights were declared.

He recovered with the aid of surgery and a lot of work on the water walker and had a short autumn campaign to keep him fit.

The plan Macdonald had in place for Rebel Raider's 2009 spring is the one he will follow this year.

"He has been back in work for six or seven weeks and will resume over 1400 metres in the Penny Edition at Morphettville next month," Macdonald said.

"He will go to Melbourne after that and follow exactly what was going to happen last year with three weight-for-age runs into the Caulfield Cup.

"Everything is good with him and his leg is good. He has thickened up a little bit but still has the same temperament and shows no signs of being bullish.

"He's a gentle giant."

After the Penny Edition on August 21, Rebel Raider will head to Melbourne for the Group Two Makybe Diva (1600m), the Group One Underwood Stakes (1800m) the Group One Turnbull Stakes (2000m) ahead of the Caulfield Cup on October 16.

Joining Rebel Raider in Melbourne will be five time stakes winner Majestic Music whose aim will be the Group One Myer Classic (1600m) on October 30.

TRSA Stewards Conclude Jockeys Challenge Inquiry

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/44248-trsa-stewards-conclude-jockeys-challenge-inquiry.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/150510/outlandishlad.jpg desc=On Monday, 28 June 2010, TRSA Limited Stewards continued their inquiries into wagering activity on the Jockeys Challenge with respect... size=small}

Outlandish LadOn Monday, 28 June 2010, TRSA Limited Stewards continued their inquiries into wagering activity on the Jockeys Challenge with respect to the Morphettville Parks race meeting on Saturday, 15 May 2010.

Jockeys Challenge betting is a form of all-in sports betting conducted under rules approved directly by government regulatory agencies and in the State of South Australia is not conducted under the Rules of Racing.

Nevertheless it is acknowledged that this form of sports betting relies on outcomes provided by the Thoroughbred Racing Industry.

Stewards have reviewed wagering records of the sports bookmakers operated by Unitab and Tabcorp as well as nine corporate bookmakers licensed in the Northern Territory, which offered a Jockeys Challenge market on this meeting.

CCTV footage from Adelaide TAB agencies was also reviewed.

In addition the telephone records, including other communication, of licensed jockeys C Lever and P Gatt and Lever’s Riders Agent M Privato, as well as licensed Stable Foreman S Kavanagh and another trainer, were examined.

All parties, apart from Privato (by phone), attended hearings before the Stewards who also interviewed other parties.

The Stewards established that jockey Lever had not ridden trackwork in the week prior to Saturday, 15 May but had ridden trackwork at Morphettville that morning in order to test his fitness for his engagements that afternoon.

Having ridden a number of horses for trainer Mr R Jolly, the rider had been ill and left the training facility at about 7.45 am (CST).

Lever stated he had returned to his residence in order to give himself every opportunity to fulfill his rides.

After resting and as his condition had not improved, at 9.50 am (CST) C Lever notified stable foreman S Kavanagh (for Trainer M A T Kavanagh) that he would not be riding stable runners that afternoon. Immediately after Lever informed his Rider Agent of his decision.

At 10.09 am (CST) TRSA Limited Stewards were alerted by advice from Stable Foreman S Kavanagh that Lever would not ride at the meeting.  This was the Stewards first notice of the fact.

At 10.14 am (CST), made announcements notifying C Lever would not ride at the meeting, to the Unitab Control and other media.

It was established that, at 10.16 am (CST) S Kavanagh, having consulted with owners, confirmed P Gatt as the replacement rider of Toorak Thunder (Race 1) and Outlandish Lad (Race 3) for the stable.

This information, together with other replacements, was provided by Stewards to Unitab Control and the media at about 10.30 am (CST).

Then, TRSA Limited Stewards visited C Lever at his residence late on that morning and confirmed he was unwell.

Having examined the available evidence, the Stewards are satisfied that Jockey P Gatt’s only role in the matter was to have accepted the two replacement rides offered by the Kavanagh stable, which necessitated urgent travel from his Adelaide Hills address.

C Lever was further questioned with regard to his failure to respond to a direction of the Stewards, issued in July 2007, to inform them as soon as practicable after making his decision not to ride.

Lever stated that he had advised his Agent M Privato, and as is his practice, had relied on the Agent to inform the Stewards.

Riders Agent M Privato advised the Stewards that, although not in his office when informed by Lever, he had attempted unsuccessfully to contact the Stewards’ Adelaide office as well as trainers and had also attempted to contact C Lever to indicate he had been unable to contact the Stewards.

Further examination of Privato’s phone records disclosed no contact with persons identified by Stewards to have wagered on Gatt in the Jockeys Challenge.

Having regard to the evidence, the Stewards determined that C Lever had not breached the Rules of Racing and were satisfied his Agent had made an appropriate effort to notify the Stewards of the Jockeys decision not to ride.

However both Lever and Privato were instructed to be fully aware of the requirements of the Stewards directions issued in May 2010 and the contact details provided therein.

Stable Foreman S Kavanagh’s evidence to Stewards together with the examination of phone and wagering records revealed that he had wagered on jockey Gatt in the Jockeys Challenge prior to declaring his replacement riders.

The Stewards also noted that Kavanagh’s phone records included calls made or returned to stable clients and acquaintances prior to 10.30 am (CST) and Stewards noted from betting records that a small number of those persons had wagered on Gatt in the Jockeys Challenge prior to or about the time of the Steward’s public announcement.

Kavanagh explained that in all instances the calls identified occurred routinely on race mornings and, apart from a form expert, involved patrons of the stable.

Having fully considered the evidence, having noted that neither Trainers nor their authorized representatives are constrained from betting on thoroughbred racing, and having taken advice whether his actions had breached the Rules of Racing, the Stewards concluded that charges against S Kavanagh for possible breaches of the Rules could not be sustained.

The Stewards will make a recommendation to the TRSA Board to adopt as a Local Rule a direction provided to riders in South Australia in May 2010 in relation to the notification of their inability to ride and will propose a Local Rule to direct Trainers (and/or their authorised representatives) regarding their obligations in similar matters in the future.

Leon MacdonaldThe outskirts of Morphettville racecourse this morning was a scene of chaos after a horse was fatally struck by a taxi.

Two horses from the stables of Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas attempted to cross Bray St, a street alongside the racetrack.

One horse was ridden by Clare Lindop while the other was partnered by apprentice Brodie Petherick.

Despite both riders wearing reflective jackets and horses wearing reflective gear, Petherick’s mount was struck by a passing taxi.

His horse, believed to be an unraced two-year-old, had to be euthanised after breaking a leg in the accident while Petherick was able to miraculously walk away unhurt.

"People who live in the area are well aware of the horses shifting around this corner and they're always pretty good to us," Macdonald told the ABC.

“This bloke was obviously strange to the area, I don't know.

"Clare was shocked, she saw it coming and kicked her horse forward and it got away from the other one and she was probably nearest Morphett Road.

"She moved off on her horse and got out of its way, but only just,” he added.

Flying Merkel @ Murray BridgeMurray Bridge is a step closer to getting a state-of-the-art equine and residential facility.

It comes after the South Australian Minister for Urban Development and Planning, Paul Hollway, rezoned 850 hectares of land at Murray Bridge for a new racecourse and housing.

The proposed site is located in Gifford Hill, just south of the South Eastern Freeway (M1) linking Adelaide and Melbourne.

"Not only will this rezoning support upgraded race facilities but also just as importantly the complementary housing development will also accommodate anticipated growth in Murray Bridge's population," Mr. Holloway told the ABC.

Murray Bridge is predicted to have a population growth of around 13,000 people in the next 30 years with 3,500 homes – covering 350 hectares - to be built.

Murray Bridge Racing Club and Thoroughbred Racing SA (TRSA) signed a joint venture agreement with Adelaide-based land development company Burke Urban in January.

The planned equine precinct will feature:

  • New and fully-resourced race and training tracks
  • Multipurpose function and spectator facilities
  • A specialised estate for trainers and their horses
  • 50 hectares of training facilities

The equine project, estimated to be costing $35 million, is expected to be funded directly through the creation of the homes.

Additionally, the current Murray Bridge racetrack will continue to be used until the new track is available for racing. Racing at the new track proposed to start within the next two years. At that time, the current course will then also be redeveloped.

Murray Bridge Track Features

  • A new outer turf track with a circumference of 2160 metres, 30 metres in width and 450 metres home straight.
  • A new inner track with a circumference of 1996 metres, 20 metres in width.
  • A new sand training track with a circumference of approximately a mile.

Stewards Crack The Whip At Balaklava

Four jockeys have been suspended following Wednesday’s meeting at Balaklava with three of the riders suspended over breaches of the whip rules.

Tilly Neve, Scott Westover and Damien Robinson were out outed for excessive whip use while senior jockey Adrian Patterson was suspended for careless riding.

Neve and Westover both transgressed in the $10,000 Emoyeni Wines 0-68 Handicap (1615m), a race for apprentice riders only.

Neve, who partnered Manganese to victory, used her whip in a forehand manner in consecutive strides prior to the 100 metre mark on four occasions. Consequently, she had also used the whip in a forehand manner more than five times prior to the final 100 metres.

She pleaded guilty to both charges and was suspended for two and four meetings respectively with both penalties to be served concurrently.

Neve will be free to ride at Morphettville Parks on July 7 and her suspension was the only blemish as she rode three winners from the eight-race card.

Westover, who rode Hellacious, pleaded guilty to using his whip in a forehand manner in excess of five times prior to the 100 metres.

He was suspended for two meetings with his ban commencing after next Thursday’s meeting at Port Augusta. He’ll be free to ride at Morphettville Parks on July 10.

Robinson was suspended in the $10,000 Shane Allen Plumbing 3yo SC Handicap (1315m) for his ride aboard Notonmatchday for the same rule breach as Westover earlier in the day. He also received a two meeting ban after also pleading guilty to the charge.

Robinson will commence his suspension following Saturday’s meeting at Morphettville and will return for next Saturday’s Morphettville Parks meeting.

Patterson was outed for his ride aboard Little Fireball in the opening event. He allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Bargain Buy (Ben Claridge) shortly after the start.

Patterson pleaded guilty to the careless riding charge and will be sidelined following this Wednesday’s Murray Bridge meeting and will return for a Morphettville Parks meeting on July 10.

Yoshi Raaza Put Down

Yoshi RaazaThe fickle nature of competitive thoroughbred racing doesn’t need to be explained to the connections of ill-fated galloper Yoshi Razza.

The black seven-year-old gelding by Japanese sire Tayasu Tsuyoshi, had to put down following Wednesday’s $10,000 Carlton Draught / Sabois Maiden Plate (1600m) at Murray Bridge.

Jockey Tamara Zanker told stewards following the event that she believed Yoshi Raaza was sore in the near hind leg.

However the club’s veterinary surgeon reported an injury to the near side of the gelding’s pelvis with first aid administered shortly after.

After believing he could feel broken bones on the pelvis of the horse, there was little option left to the vet but to humanly euthanise Yoshi Raaza.

In over five years of racing, Yoshi Raaza failed to win a race. That was until late May when Yoshi Raaza won a steeplechase at Casterton that was later declared a no-race as the race was marred by the death of Prince Vitality.

But Yoshi Razza was not to be denied victory for any longer, winning at his next start at the same venue on June 20 in the $15,000 Pot A Round Garden Centre Maiden Steeplechase (3800m).
