Wine Set to Start Favourite at Mudgee
- Tuesday, 20 August 2002 00:00
Mudgee Race Club chairman, Max Walker, says there's already been an unprecedented level of interest in the wine celebration race day.
"We're getting calls from all over Australia with great support from business," Max says.
"As well as the outstanding sponsorship from Wesfarmers, the Merrill Lynch group has organised with us to fly-in 90 high profile clients who will be wined, dined and entertained in our marquee village."
The club is planning for a crowd of about 4,000 for the eight-race wine celebration day which carries prizemoney totalling $60,000.
"It's the only race day where the favourite could be the wine," says Mudgee wine growers' Lucie White.
"For the first time the race day will be showcasing our local food and world famous wine exclusively; it will really be a case of come to the Mudgee races and taste the region. And to make a weekend of it, were encouraging all visitors to "graze" at a special pre-race day wine and food tasting session at the racecourse on the Saturday evening before the races."
Over a dozen local food and wine producers will be exhibiting at the meeting with racegoers able browse through the stalls and taste the local product.
Meanwhile, Max points out that while the parents are having a great day, a special programme of events has been developed to keep their children entertained all day.
"We're going all out to make this a real family day," he says.
And there are more of these highly successful meetings to come; NSW Country Racing Council Chief Executive, Brian Judd, points out that the Wesfarmers Landmark Mudgee Wine Celebration Race Day is part of a concept of "theme meetings" the CRC is focusing on developing through its seed funding programme throughout the State during the next 12 months.

Oliver a Runaway Winner in Scobie Breasley Medal
- Wednesday, 21 August 2002 00:00
For Oliver his fourth medal win tonight sent the record books flying, by polling the highest total and winning by the largest margin in history.
Not surprisingly Oliver's best polling came throughout the carnival times. He scored the majority of his points during the spring and autumn parts of the season.
When the final votes were read out for the start of the season Oliver topped the list with 91 votes, some 35 points more than his nearest rival Kerrin McEvoy. Nash Rawiller (49), Darren Gauci (44) and Brett Prebble (36) filled out the top five.
Oliver beat his previous record number of votes of 89, when he won the medal in 1999.
Reece Wheeler finished as the highest polling apprentice with 27 points.
The leading rider said he was delighted to win the award after what had been a great season.
"It's been a wonderful year," Oliver said.
The leading rider admitted to feeling a bit of pressure coming to tonight's award.
"There was a little bit of pressure there because everyone expected me to win," he said. "And it's just great to win this great award named in honour of a great gentleman and former champion in Scobie," he added.
"I'm still chasing the fifth Caulfield Cup and I'd like to share that record with you," he said with a smile to Breasley who is one ahead of Oliver in the Cup record with five wins.
Oliver thanked many people including his fellow rival jockeys who he said helped him in his record breaking season.
"Congratulations must go to all vote getters and all of the jockeys, they really help to push me harder."
"It's difficult to keep everyone happy all the time. But a lot of people stuck with me during the year and I have to really thank them for that."
Oliver also congratulated the winner of the Tommy Corrigan medal Brett Scott.
"It was great to see you come back. Noone deserves it more than you," he said to the leading jumps jockey.
Scobie Breasley, who the medal is named in honour of, said Oliver was a very worthy winner.
"Damien is a great jockey. One of the world's top jockeys and I am delighted he has won my medal for the fourth time and as i say he deserves it," Breasley said. "He's the best jockey and I congratulate him immensely."
When asked to compare Oliver against some of the greats of all time Breasley rated the modern day star as one of the best.
"I think Damien is a great jockey and he's still young. If possible he is going to better and I would put him in the category of the old timers like Bill Duncan, Jim Pike and Harold Badger."

Bildaily Out to Fulfil Family Dream
- Tuesday, 20 August 2002 00:00
While Bel Esprit, Innovation Girl and Mistegic starred in their respective stakes races, the Rob McGuinness trained Bidaily was just as impressive winning the seventh event on the card.
Carrying the colours of the 1944 Melbourne Cup winner Sirius, Bidaily and Sally Wynne cruised home to win the Rosemount "V" Sparkling Handicap (1514) from the handy Freedman trained performer Bush Padre.
Bidaily is raced by the brother and sister combination of David and Elizabeth Turnbull, a name linked with the Melbourne Spring Carnival. The Group Two Turnbull Stakes, one of the Flemington features and lead ups to the Melbourne Cup, recongnises the contribution to racing of the family of Bidaily's breeders and owners.
Although admitting the four-year-old is probably not up to Group Two class at carnival time at this stage, Bidaily's trainer Rob McGuinness said he'd hope he could target the race.
"It would be great if we are able to get him to run in the Turnbull Stakes," McGuinness said. "I'm certain it would mean a lot his owners."
A son of the former Victorian sire Tertian, Bidaily is a well named commodity according to connections.
"Tertian actually means every other day," McGuinness reported. "Hence where Bidaily's name comes from."
While he may be a long way off from running in the Turnbull Stakes, Bidaily has made a positive start with his two and a half length demolition on the weekend.

North Boy Galloping Toward Manikato Return
- Wednesday, 21 August 2002 00:00
Brilliant sprinter North Boy is on track to clash with some of the country's top sprinters after an impressive work out in Adelaide on the weekend.
A member of the powerful Lindsay Park team, North Boy galloped solo between races at Victoria Park on Saturday and impressed connections.
"It was a very good gallop," trainer Tony McEvoy said. "It (the gallop) was just another step in his preparation for the Manikato."
North Boy, a son of the champion sire Rory's Jester, looks likely to clash with a top field when he runs first up in next month's Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.
With a field expected to contain last Saturday's winners Bel Esprit and Mistegic, it will give McEvoy a good chance to see where the gelding is at.
A half brother to the champion Perth based middle distance performer Northerly, North Boy has not raced since a barnstorming three length track record breaking win in the Group Three Krisflyer Sprint in Singapore earlier this year.
North Boy was one of four McEvoy trained gallopers to gallop at Victoria Park.
European import Sandmason, handy staying prospect Soldado and the former kiwi Our Jermyn Street galloped together in good style.
PICS - The McEvoy spring charge warmed up at Victoria Park on Saturday when another four of the team galloped between races (Jenny Barnes).
Quinn Adds to Aussie Charge in Hong Kong
- Tuesday, 20 August 2002 00:00
Quinn was recognised for his outstanding form, which in recent seasons has seen a lucrative linking with powerhouse trainer John Hawkes. That partnership has led to recent feature wins from horses including Lonhro, Viscount and Lord Essex.
Having already ridden in overseas locations including Malaysia and New Zealand, Quinn will be able to ride in the country until the international race day, on December 15. The licence will enable him to ride from the start of the new season.
A winner of six Group One races, Quinn's overall tally of race successes sits now at over 1560. During his career he has won no less than 51 stakes races.
Hong Kong already has two of the top five jockeys - Shane Dye and Dwayne Dunn. Both riders, along with Michael Cahill, are also licenced for this coming season.
Two Trainers in Line for Viking Ruler's Brother
- Tuesday, 20 August 2002 00:00
A full brother to Viking Ruler, the colt by Danehill is currently in pretraining after being purchased for NZ$800,000 earlier this year by Victorian based breeding farm Newlands.
Robert Alteri said on Saturday that his family had shortlisted the possible trainer to two candidates.
"It depends on whether we choose to race him in Melbourne or Sydney," Alteri said. "We've got one trainer chosen in both cities."
The colt, who will be Newlands foundation stallion when he retires, is the fifth foal from the multiple Group One winner Tristalove.
At stud Tristalove has already proven herself by producing the Spring Champion Stakes winner Viking Ruler and the now retired Group placegetter Chimeara.
Tristalove is out of the Railway Hcp (G1) winner (Our) Diamond Lover, who is one of a number of Group One stars out of the former New Zealand wonder broodmare Eight Carat.
