Cross was aboard Tough Times, a $22 outsider in the field of seven but stormed down the outside to defeat Numilla (Mark Pegus) and Riva Storm (Michelle Payne).

Melbourne Next for Champion Sunline

There seems little chance of Sunline returning to Hastings for Saturday week's Glenmorgan Hawke's Bay Challenge Stakes.

Co-trainer Trevor McKee has virtually counted out that race in nominating the $A250,000 Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley on the same day as the champion mare's next likely target. That will require travelling to Melbourne in the middle of next week.

Sunline was given her first gallop since winning the Mudgway Partsworld Stakes in her seven-year-old pipe-opener when she worked over 1000 metres at Takanini yesterday.

In an interesting twist, her regular jockey Greg Childs has been engaged to ride arch rival Northerly in the Craiglee Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. Childs helped bring about Northerly's defeat in last Saturday's Memsie Stakes.

Northerly finished fourth after being held in a pocket during the early stages by Childs riding Fields Of Omagh. Damien Oliver, his jockey then, had already decided to ride Don Eduardo when trainer Fred Kersley decided to back Northerly up.

Emirates and AJC Strike Four Year Sponsorship Deal

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/9525--sp-1649364105.html layout=standard image= desc=Emirates, the Dubai based international airline, has today signed an exclusive partnership with the Australian Jockey Club (AJC), sponsoring some... size=small}
Emirates, the Dubai based international airline, has today signed an exclusive partnership with the Australian Jockey Club (AJC), sponsoring some major races in the 2003 Autumn and Spring Carnivals.

The four-year, seven-figure sponsorship effective from 1 January 2003, will secure naming rights to the Group One Emirates AJC Australian Oaks and a race on Epsom Day in the Spring Carnival. Emirates will also be a sponsor of Fashions-On-The-Field and will see year-round branding at all race meetings at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Emirates Group Managing Director, Maurice Flanagan, said, "This investment highlights Emirates commitment to the Australian market. We are very pleased to be an exclusive partner with the AJC and look forward to some great racing and fashions in Autumn and Spring.

“This is an ideal sponsorship for our company. Emirates can fly Australian racing enthusiasts to some of the world’s best racing events, as well as the fashion conscious to Emirates destinations such as Milan, London and Paris,” said Mr Flanagan.

AJC Chief Executive Tony King said AJC members and patrons will see the benefits of the sponsorship agreement from the first day of the 2003 Autumn Carnival, Australia’s Richest Race Day with the $8 million San Miguel Doncaster Derby Day.

“Like the AJC, Emirates is committed to enriching the whole racing experience,” said Mr King. “As such, AJC members and patrons will benefit enormously from our partnership. We believe we can now truly ‘promise the world’ at Royal Randwick given the international racing itineraries that Emirates is offering AJC members as well as the fashion prizes on offer to all patrons on Australia’s Richest Race Day.”

Emirates, recently named Airline of the Year by Skytrax Research (UK) for the second successive year, will be the carrier taking racing enthusiasts to key international racing events escorted by AJC Fashion Director Angela Belle McSweeney. These trips will fly to events in some of Emirates key destinations including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (France) and Royal Ascot (UK). A trip will also be co-ordinated to the World’s richest racing event, the Dubai World Cup in 2003.

In its commitment to Australian racing, Emirates Airline is also a major sponsor of the Melbourne Cup Carnival with the Emirates Classic Race on Oaks Day and naming rights to Emirates Stakes Day. Emirates is also a sponsor of the world's richest horse race, The Dubai World Cup, along with the prestigious Singapore Derby and major meetings at Newmarket, the Curragh and Longchamp.

Emirates' Australian sporting sponsorships extends to football as the title sponsor of the Chelsea Football Club as well as to Australian Rules Football as the main sponsor of the Collingwood Football Club in Melbourne. Cricket, basketball and powerboat racing round out Emirates' diverse sports portfolio.

Galroof Injured - Out for Spring

Just as Mike Moroney's Flemington stable was gearing up for an attack on the Victorian spring carnival one of the stables's major hopes, Galroof, has had to be put aside.

The Maroof four-year-old Galroof has injured a tendon in trackwork and will now have to be spelled until the autumn. Galroof was a major star in Queensland for Moroney and he had high hopes for her over the spring.

Some compensation came Moroney's way on Saturday at Caulfield with a good second with Feel The Noise and close up runs from Gypsy Lad and in particular The Secondmortgage.

A five-year-old Housebuster gelding The Secondmortgage was a fast finishing fifth in the Listed Agripower Heatherlie Hcp over 1700m and Moroney was pleased with the effort.

At Kilmore the stable had the first starter Disco Hips (3yo g Groom Dancer-Kind by St Hilarion) win by 3 1/4L over 1100m. Although racing greenly it was a good first up win and Moroney said Disco Hips will develop into a nice horse in the autumn.

Northerly Set for Memsie Magic

r6northerly.jpg (13690 bytes)Champion gelding Northerly looks set to bounce back into the winner's stall in tomorrow's Group Two Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

The reigning Cox Plate winner has pleased connections in the past week and his trainer Fred Kersley is sure he will run well in the feature event.

"He's much better than he was first up," Kersley said on radio this morning. "I'm sure he is going to run well tomorrow."

Northerly resumed with a close up fifth in the recent listed Goodwood Sprint in Perth and the son of Serheed worked in good style before leaving Perth earlier this week.

"He had a good hit out at Belmont on Tuesday morning before we flew over," Kersley added. "We did a bit better than evens before letting him stride home over the final 800 metres."

r6northerly5.jpg (9610 bytes)Champion Melbourne jockey Damien Oliver, fresh from winning his fourth Scobie Breasley Medal last week, exercised Northerly yesterday.

"Damien said he felt pretty fresh, which is expected," Kersley said. "But he said he felt good."

Kersley's confidence for tomorrow's race is lengths better than this time two weeks ago. In the lead up to his first up effort at home Kersley played down the expectations of the gelding winning.

Tomorrow Northerly will race without blinkers for the second consecutive time and for the first time outside of Western Australia.

While Northerly was beaten in Perth a fortnight ago, Kersley is still in form. Last Saturday at Belmont he prepared two winners - Heavy Nova and Cento.

PICS - Quentin Lang.

McEvoy Closing in on Lindsay Park Record

r5tonymcevoy.jpg (7571 bytes)Tony McEvoy has had a great start to the new racing season and is bearing down on Lindsay Park’s longstanding record of 24 winners in August.

Colin Hayes AM O.B.E trained 24 winners in the 1986 / 87 season and his son David repeated the performance in 1990 / 91 and again in 1993 / 94. McEvoy is currently sitting on 23 winners with strong chances tomorrow in both Melbourne and Adelaide.

With Fields of Omagh stepping out for his second start in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes at Caufield tomorrow McEvoy has high hopes for equaling the record in the feature race.

"We are stepping up in class tomorrow and while horses such as Northerly deserve the utmost respect there is no reason why our horse can’t make it eight in a row," McEvoy said.

While McEvoy’s six winners at Balaklava on Wednesday have placed him in a position to take out this months national leading trainer title it is the improvement of horses such as the Jeune filly Cocktail Evening that fills him confidence leading into the spring.

Vinnie Roe Heads Cup Weights

Dermot Weld's stayer Vinnie Roe heads the weights for the 2002 Tooheys New Melbourne Cup and Carlton Draught Caulfield Cup following the release of handicaps today.

The five-year-old is the winner of eight of its fourteen starts and has been asked to carry 59kgs in both races.

A two-time Group 1 winner, Vinnie Roe will be attempting to emulate the feats of Vintage Crop which Weld trained to win the 1993 Melbourne Cup.

Reigning Carlton Draught Cox Plate champion Northerly is second in the Cups weights with 58 kgs ahead of the Godolphin stable's Marienbard (57) which won at Group 1 level in Germany at the weekend.

Other notable horses in the handicaps were AJC Derby winner, Don Eduardo (54.5), Derby runner-up Carnegie Express (54), VRC Oaks winner Magical Miss (52.5) and AJC Oaks winner Republic Lass (52).

Victorian Jockey in Drugs Controversy

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/22137--sp-945775659.html layout=standard image= desc=Victorian jockey Lisa Irwin will be forced to front an inquiry by stewards after a urine sample shock at the... size=small}
r4lisairwin.jpg (8946 bytes)Victorian jockey Lisa Irwin will be forced to front an inquiry by stewards after a urine sample shock at the Hamilton races yesterday.

Irwin was one of two jockeys, cross country hoop Paul Daniels was the other, to be asked to provide a urine sample at yesterday's meeting, but what should have been a simple exercise has turned into a saga.

Stewards "had concerns with the urine sample provided" by Irwin and they then requested she provide another sample.

However, Irwin failed to supply stewards with the second sample when required.

The first sample, which stewards have their "concerns" on, has been sent to the Racing Analytical Services Laboratory for analysis.

A stewards spokesman said any sample takes "a few days" to be screened and the results will be passed on to officials.

Prior to directing Irwin to give the second sample evidence was taken from the Racecourse Detective and the Club Sauna Supervisor as well as the rider.

An inquiry into the reason why the hoop failed "to produce a urine sample subsequent to the stewards directing her to do so" will be held when the results of the first sample are returned.
