New Weekly Feature - The Black Book
- Monday, 23 September 2002 00:00
Today we launch a new weekly updated section called the Black Book.
We attempt to find coming winners and try to pick the big race winners in advance.
Also posted each Monday will be the Sack Book - horses which have disappointed, lost their place in the black book or generally not capable of featuring in some of the feature events this spring.
THE BLACK BOOK
Rosehill - Saturday
Race 1
RIVER TO ME - Should be winning soon.
Race 2
VICTORY VEIN - Unbeatable in Flight Stakes - then watch out Melbourne!
QUIET AS - Given a huge task at second start. Hopefully it hasn't dented her confidence.
Coming black type winner.
Race 3
INTO THE NIGHT - Looks set to win again.
JUST DEVINE - Capable of surprising soon. Not hopeless in stakes races.
Race 4
CHUCKLE - Wins in another two strides. Great run. Seems to have developed nicely in its
break.
Race 5
PLATINUM SCISSORS - Didn't know what to do when sent to the front on Saturday. Will bounce
back soon.
MASKERADO - Connections have a big wrap on him. Derby bound in Melbourne. If he can run
straight he will win plenty of good races in the future.
Race 6
DRESS CIRCLE - The Metrop looks his again. No whip - no worries!
FREEMASON - Caught the eye making good ground late.
Race 7
CRAWL - Gordo took all of the attention of the Hawkes runners, but this fellow was clearly
the run of the stable.
HOEBERG - Getting fitter - settling into her new home well. Quality mare when right.
Race 8
DUEL FUEL - Capable Queenslander who ran well. Made handy late ground. Looks set to win in
the Harbour city.
Sandown - Saturday
Race 1
SUPREME HEIGHTS - Will improve from first jumps start. Has plenty of flat
ability.
Race 2
THE MIGHTY LIONS - Should be at peak fitness next start. Capable when right.
Race 3
DISCO HIPS - Will develop into a nice type with time. Should have finished closer. Was
impressive on debut - form out of race looks handy.
MAGIC BIRD - Already a stakes winner. Will be fitter for this run and if placed correctly
can win again soon.
Race 4
HOMECOMING QUEEN - Great debut effort. Still has a few things to learn and when she does
watch out!
Race 5
PAESTUM - Consistent performer who will always give you a good honest run.
Race 6
ROCK OF THE AGES - Looks like he is not far from finally breaking that frustrating run of
second placings.
Race 7
YORUBA - Hit the line strongly. Stable has a bit of an opinion of him. Capable of making
it back to back wins.
Race 8
PAST THE SKIES - Just grabbed right on the line. Is already a city winner and should not
be far from doing likewise again.
Caulfield - Sunday
Race 1
VENUS WAS HER NAME - She's Got It! Impressive win. Will win a stakes race this
preparation.
VISAGE - Found the line well. Set to feature in better races.
Race 2
CALMING - Proven dual stakes winner who caught the eye with another strong effort. Stable
going well.
COSMIC STRIKE - Can strike at her next run. Stakes winner in handy quality in Adelaide.
Runs well while fresh.
Race 3
LASHED - Jumped away with them and made up plenty of good late ground in the centre of the
track. Stable keen on her for Thousand Guineas and Oaks.
MACEDON LADY - Gave John Symons plenty to smile about. Looks an ideal Oaks proposition.
Race 4
HELENUS - Lightly raced three-year-old who again made up good ground at long odds. Should
be further suited over longer distances.
Race 5
BEL ESPRIT - Plenty to like about his gutsy effort. Back to the three-year-olds for the
Guineas. Oliver and Symons are confident he will get 1600 metres - and that will do me!
FRITZ - Was a top class performer in New Zealand early on and he doesn't get the credit he
deserves. Made rapid late ground in the centre of the field. Capable of running a big race
at huge odds again soon.
WEASEL WILL - Made up strong late ground on the outside and is working up to another good
win this preparation.
USTINOV - Already proven big race winner who made up some ground without being punished
too hard.
Race 6
NORTHERLY - What can you say?!?! This bloke should have been the Horse of the Year last
season (he got my vote) and he is now probably the most popular horse in Melbourne (and
Perth of course). Big weight - no worries - bring on the Caulfield Cup and whatever else.
MAGICAL MISS - Got beaten by a champion. Likely Cox Plate contender before she attempts to
emulate Saintly and give Bart another Cup.
TULLY THUNDER - Looks a Caulfield Cup chance. Quality Group One winning mare.
Race 7
PENTASTIC - Strong win after coming from well back. Capable of featuring in better races.
BIG PAT - Stuck on well after covering plenty of extra ground. Flukey Cup hope.
Race 8
LETHAL LEIGH - Found the line strongly. Will get further and he looks set to become a
black type performer very soon.
BEREZNY - Probably the run of the race. Adelaide stakes winner who looks close to his best
again.

Broken Down Brew Retired
- Monday, 09 September 2002 00:00
Melbourne Cup winner Brew, on the comeback trail after being put aside with ligament problems 18 months ago, has been forced into retirement with a sesamoid fracture. O'Malleys Boy, one of New Zealand's equine characters, has suffered a tendon tear.
Brew was scratchy after running in the Craiglee Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, but had his connections guessing when his previously troublesome ligaments appeared free of any problems.
X-rays taken today at the Flemington stable of trainer Mike Moroney revealed the beginnings of a foreleg sesamoid fracture, spelling the end of his career.
"We had said all along if there were any doubts, we would pull the pin," part-owner Paul Moroney told ThoroughbredNews tonight.
"We feel relieved that we picked up a potentially major problem early and are able to give him an honourable retirement."
Likewise, O'Malleys Boy goes into retirement nursing a tendon injury that is not life-threatening and thus allows him a worthwhile life away from the track.
The little bay, like Brew an eight-year-old, proved a real character in a career that produced 11 wins from 54 starts.
"We'll really miss the daily routine with Biggles," said part-owner Judy Moss, using the nickname that has become synonymous with one of New Zealand's best liked racehorses.

New Weekly Feature - The Sack Book
- Monday, 23 September 2002 00:00
Rosehill - Saturday
Race 1
FOREST JIM - Would be easier finding a pleased Carlton supporter than winning on him.
BLACK ALE - Would have given yourself black eyes if you spent your hard earned on him.
Race 2
CHATELAINE - Should have stuck on better. Better suited to 1200 metres I guess.
Race 3
OAMARU FORCE - Condition gave out quickly. Is a stakes winner - perhaps he's waiting for
the night racing.
CANNY FLY - Bled - banned for three months.
Race 4
CALAWAY GAL - Never been a fan - never will. What gear change is on the agenda now? No
good in blinkers, no good in a shadow roll. Are you sure this horse won the Slipper? The
real Gal must still be spelling.
BOLLINGER - Not up to these just yet obviously.
Race 5
No candidates.
Race 6
MR. BUREAUCRAT - Not quite a top liner.
GEORGIE BOY - Stopped like it was shot. Retirement rapidly approaching.
Race 7
MISS BUSSELL - Arrowfield might be wishing she was served last week.
Race 8
STATESMANSHIP - Costly conveyance.
KREISLER'S JEWEL - Should have run better.
CONAIR - Flopped again.
Sandown - Saturday
Race 1
MARTIAL RULE - Costly. Very costly.
WILLIAM - Didn't fit the "bill."
Race 2
WOODWINA - Should have beaten this field. Mixes form like mum does the biscuit mixture.
Race 3
BLAH BLAH BLAH - Not a city performer yet.
NATURAL BLITZ - Raced terribly. At the crossroads now.
Race 4
EVERY UNPLACED RUNNER - Back to the bush.
Race 5
PENTATHLON - Couldn't go a yard early. His backers were feeling ill a long way out.
GALLOPINI - We've seen the best of him about three years ago. Retirement beckoning.
Race 6
ZABUAN - Needs jumps.
BOLD IMPULSE - Ditto.
Race 7
STEEL KING - Becoming one of the punter's nightmare horses. Always carries plenty - runs
well but not just good enough. Has talent - maybe better after a break.
Race 8
FAIRY FLASH - Not as good as we thought.
HERE FOR GLORY - No glory in sight in town.
Caulfield - Sunday
Race 1
GRADUAL - I'm not tipping this again until after a spell. Raced like a tired horse.
Disappointing.
Race 2
TRIBULA - Back to Perth - you are much better suited there.
REACTIVE - Was it second up fever? I'm prepared to risk again next start.
Race 3
BRIEF EMBRACE - Needs to go back to 1200 metres - not a chance in the Thousand Guineas.
Race 4
GENERAL MINOLTA - Better suited in Queensland at this time of the year.
ABLE CHOICE - Boom Hong Kong performer who hasn't lived up to it since being in Melbourne.
Untried at 1600 metres and I'm prepared to risk him.
Race 5
PRINCE RUBITON - Very disappointing. Obviously not up to the best at this time of the
year. Could be an autumn performer.
TIT FOR TAAT - How did this thing get close to Sunline? If that form carries through to
the George Main then I'm willing to risk the champion mare. Across the Tasman you go.
CHONG TONG - Risk at any track except Flemington.
Race 6
No candidates just yet.
Race 7
ROSE ARCHWAY - If she was mine she would be in foal. Hasn't come back anywhere near her
best - pity it's going to depreciate a great record.
PIPER STAR - How did you get so close to Northerly and Co last autumn. Down a peg you
come.
Race 8
STORM ATTACK - Handy performer but not up to stakes class just yet. Maybe next
preparation.
CONSTRUCTOR - Normally harder to catch than a greasy pig.
Morphettville (SA)

TRACK: GOOD
WEATHER: FINE
Rail: Out 5 metres entire circuit
RACE 1 : BRECKNOCK INSURANCE BROKERS HANDICAP - 1050 metres
PHYLL THE FLYER (J. Bowditch) was slow to jump.
I AM THE MAN (N. Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly.
AL ZIMER (J. Maund) was inclined to rear as the gates opened and missed the start.
On jumping away ELMO’S HERO (NZ) (H. McKechnie) shifted out and brushed AMACLASE (J. Holder).
In the vicinity of the 600 metres CASH LOAN (C. Lindop) was inconvenienced when taken out marginally onto KING’S CHOICE (D. Tootell) by ELMO’S HERO (NZ) (H. McKechnie), which was inclined to lay out.
In the vicinity of the 500 metres AL ZIMER (J. Maund) raced fiercely for a short distance and was obliged to be restrained off heels.
Near the 200 metres AMACLASE (J. Holder), which was inclined to lay in, shifted in and tightened GRAND MANSION (T. Barras) onto ZASHMIR (W. Kerford). J. Holder was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.
When questioned regarding his riding of AMACLASE over the concluding 70 metres, J. Holder explained that the mare had been inclined to lay in and in his opinion was not responding sufficiently to his riding. He stated that in an endeavour to have AMACLASE improve, he had elected to ride in a hands and heels fashion. He added that in his opinion, his mount’s run had ended. J. Holder was advised that his explanation was accepted, however, he was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts to the finish of a race.
RACE 2 : HAIGH’S CHOCOLATES HANDICAP - 1518 metres
EXALTED TIME (J. Maund) shifted in on jumping away and brushed LA SUPREME (S. Price).
Shortly after the start LA SUPREME (S. Price) and MR SCANDAL’US (B. Vale), which was attempting to hold its position, brushed on several occasions.
At the entrance to the straight EXALTED TIME (J. Maund) shifted out onto PALAZZO (W. Kerford), which was inconvenienced when tightened onto KELMARK (S. Cahill), which became unbalanced for a short distance.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of KELMARK, S. Cahill explained that he had elected to allow his mount to drift back after jumping in order to obtain cover and have his mount relax. He stated that in the vicinity of the 1300 metres he was obliged to race three wide with cover, however, shortly afterwards was forced to race without cover. He stated that, in his opinion, KELMARK was still inclined to be immature and not as genuine as he would like, however, considering the pace of the race he felt the gelding had raced well below his expectations. Mr. S. Gower, the trainer of KELMARK, stated the only explanation he could offer was that KELMARK may have got its tongue over the bit during running. He added that he had been disappointed the gelding had not run on. He responded that both his runners, KELMARK and CLAY MAN, had pleased him leading up to the race and he personally had found it difficult to prefer the chances of one horse above the other. Mr. Gower gave an undertaking to report to Stewards any change in KELMARK’s condition in the next seven days. KELMARK was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was sore in the off hind leg. Stewards ordered that a swab sample be taken from KELMARK.
RACE 3 : THE CHAIRMAN AT NORWOOD HANDICAP - 1100 metres
STRAIGHT BY (J. Maund) was slow to jump.
At the entrance to the straight OUR FAME (N. Tomizawa) in attempting to improve its position shifted out and hampered BELLA SIGNORINA (S. Price).
Approaching the 200 metres OUR FAME (N. Tomizawa), which was inclined to lay out under pressure, shifted out and inconvenienced BELLA SIGNORINA (S. Price). N. Tomizawa was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.
N. Tomizawa reported that OUR FAME was inclined to lay out over the concluding stages.
RACE 4 : TOOP & TOOP HANDICAP - 1050 metres
ALADAR (J. Bowditch) knuckled on jumping away.
Shortly after the start ALADAR (J. Bowditch) was inconvenienced when tightened by COBAMUSE (C. Lever), which got its head up and was inclined to shift away from CHAPEL ROYAL (M. McDonald).
Inside the 500 metres ALADAR (J. Bowditch) was inclined to race keenly, improved onto heels and was obliged to steady.
J. Holder, the rider of DEFIANT, explained that he was content with his mount during running, however, when placed under pressure in the vicinity of the 200 metres it had failed to respond in the manner he had expected and inside the 200 metres, it was his opinion, it had commenced to shorten stride. He added that it was the stable’s opinion that DEFIANT had done very well leading into the race and had been expected to perform well. DEFIANT was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly to be lame in the off foreleg.
Subsequent to the race CHAPEL ROYAL was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.
RACE 5 : PERKS CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS HANDICAP - 1600 metres
SEA THE WAY (N. Tomizawa) shifted out on jumping away and inconvenienced KURTRAY (J.Maund).
Inside the 500 metres I KEN (J. Potter), which was showing a tendency to lay out, shifted out and tightened RUB SHOULDERS (J. Patton) onto the hindquarters of BOOGIE KNIGHT (J. Bowditch), which became severely unbalanced. J. Potter was advised of his obligations when shifting ground.
Inside the 400 metres RUB SHOULDERS (J. Patton) was obliged to check off the heels of I KEN (J. Potter), which had been taken out by RAINBOW THAI (B. Vale).
RACE 6 : BAKER YOUNG STOCKBROKERS TROPHY - 1600 metres
QUESTAMATIC (D. Tootell) missed the start.
Inside the 500 metres MOWGLII (N. Tomizawa) was obliged to steady off the heels of ELATHEA (B. Vale), which shifted out. B. Vale was advised to take greater care when shifting out in future.
Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow Stewards to review the official footage of the start. After considering submissions from D. Tootell, the rider of QUESTAMATIC, Mr. G. Kennewell, the trainer of the mare, and the Official Starter, Mr. L. Cromwell, Stewards ruled that QUESTAMATIC be declared a non-runner on the grounds that it had been denied a fair start.
Stewards ruled that all monies invested on
QUESTAMATIC be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be
paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 10 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 10 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.
EVANS was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding had sustained a laceration to its near fore cannon.
RACE 7 : OYSTER BAR APHRODISIAC HANDICAP - 1200 metres
SHINING PATH (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly.
Inside the 700 metres STARBUCKS (A. Stead) was inconvenienced and obliged to steady when tightened between SHINING PATH (D. Carney), which got its head up and commenced to lay out, and GRUMANS (J. Lyon), which was racing keenly and laid in.
N. Tomizawa, the rider of BISHA MON, dropped his whip approaching the finish. N. Tomizawa was reprimanded and advised that future carelessness would result in a penalty.
After the finish, SHINING PATH staggered and crashed through the running rail and collapsed. SHINING PATH was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding had suffered a massive internal haemorrhage.
RACE 8 : FPD SAVILLS HANDICAP - 1200 metres
M. McDonald was questioned regarding his being unable to make the required weight to ride WYNDAM QUEST in this event. M. McDonald was advised that in similar circumstances in future Stewards would impose a penalty.
LA MOOLA (J. Holder), SAUVIGNON HILL (D. Carney) and SAPRISTI (NZ) (C. Lever) were all slow to jump.
Near the 200 metres LA MOOLA (J. Holder) shifted in onto WYNDAM QUEST (N. Tomizawa), which shifted away abruptly and hampered TOWN WATCHER (J. Patton).
GENERAL:
Mr. V. Bradley, the trainer of RENDELSHAM STAR, the winner of Race 4, was questioned regarding his use of a mobile telephone whilst leading that gelding around the mounting enclosure subsequent to the race. Mr. Bradley pleaded guilty to the charge under ARR 160A, Part 2(a) and was fined $150.

Moree Next Stop for Brisbane Winner
- Friday, 06 September 2002 00:00
The lightly-raced five-year-old bounced from gate 11 to make every post a winner at the Brisbane track.
Ridden by three-kilo claiming apprentice Michael Dracos, Arigato staved off the fast-finishing Levante to score by a neck with Moree-owned speedster Qualo half-a-length away third.
Arigato's strong win - his eighth from just 17 starts - lifted the gelding's career earnings to almost $60,000.
The win against slick metropolitan company was in vast contrast to Arigato's previous effort when third behind bush cups king Nepelle at Moree last month - although the performance was far better than it appeared, according to Kempsey jockey Terry Treichel.
Treichel won the race on local hero Nepelle - a fast-finishing second at Dalby on Tuesday 3 September - but praised Arigato's luckless third.
"The speed was on from the word go and the race was run to suit the backmarkers," Treichel said.
"We got a lovely run off the speed and there was no way the horses up front could keep going and win the race.
"Arigato drew wide and was never on the track - he was four-wide all the way and pretty unlucky."
Arigato's trainer, Keith Swan, went within a long-neck of landing a winning double at Doomben on Saturday when stable star Caissa was narrowly beaten by Vain Halo.
Caissa, runner-up to Citichy in the time-honoured Ramornie Handicap at Grafton back in July, stormed home along the fence from eighth spot on the home-turn to just miss.
Caissa's name is expected to be among Moree Cup nominations next week, giving Keith Swan a double-edged attack for the MRC's feature race.
The trainer won the Moree Cup two years ago with Arctic Will and has his eyes firmly set on the $25,000 owners' and trainers' bonus being offered by the MRC and bookmakers Jeff Conroy and Bruce, Terry and Chris Picone.
Meanwhile, Peter Sinclair's tough little gelding Nepelle lost few admirers after a slashing second at Dalby on Tuesday, September 3.
The gelding, owned by David and Jane Manchee, stormed home from next to last to finish second to Celestial Sprinter in a 1300m open handicap.
Nepelle has been a model of consistency for the Manchees, winning the St George, Narrabri, Gilgandra, Collarenebri and Moree Cotton Cups in recent years.
The gelding, yet to finish out of a place from 15 starts on his home track, has also been placed in the Walcha, Quirindi and Mungindi Cups.
The gelding now looms as a genuine contender for the Moree Cup, a race the Manchees won 17 years ago with Carva Niche.
"The Moree Cup is the race we're looking at," David Manchee said.
"He's been a great little horse for us and has won a lot of cup races.
"He's been beaten in some big races too, including two Inverell Cups when he was narrowly beaten both times."

Twenty Three for Hawkes' Bay Feature
- Tuesday, 10 September 2002 00:00
Hawkes Bay Racing chief executive John McGifford is predicting a firm track, with the Hastings surface currently reading 2.4 on the penetrometer.
Other highlights on the day are the Gr.3 Highview Stakes, the first race in the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series, and the Gr.3 Sideline Bar Hawkes Bay Guineas.
The Highview has attracted 18 entries, including Danceinthesun, La Rumba, Simply the Best and Cheetie, winner of the listed Waikato Stud Stakes at Wanganui. With just 11 nominations, entries remain open for the Guineas, as is the case with the intermediate 1600.

Iceberg's Titanic Performance in Wyong Cup
- Thursday, 05 September 2002 00:00
Singleton shouted the bar, as he has done on numerous occasions in recent imes, yesterday when his filly Quiet As scored a stunning debut win.
A little over 24 hours later he was again on top of the world when his six-year-old gelding scored a fighting win.
A South Australian bred son of Danehill, Bondi Iceberg stalked the leaders early before hitting the front in the middle stages of the straight and then grinding home for a gutsy one length win.
Leading Sydney based rider Brian York got plenty out of Bondi Iceberg and he was able to hold out the late challenge by the fast finishing Danyon, who was aiming for back to back victories.
Feed the Meter snared third place, just ahead of the race favourite Spillway.
