Gower Eyes Oakleigh Plate For The Almighty Dollar

Morgan Dollar wins the Dermody Stakes Leading South Australian sprinter Morgan Dollar will go second-up into the Group One Oakleigh Plate if it all goes according to the plans of Morphettville-based trainer Stuart Gower.

Morgan Dollar is expected to resume in the $101,000 Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on January 16.

Gower then intends for the easily identifiable grey gelding to disappear from formguides for over a month with Morgan Dollar's main-aim to be the $402,000 Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 20, otherwise known as Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

"He'll head to the paddock for 12 days after the Kensington Stakes and have at least a month between runs, because he's proven he's better off as a fresh horse," Gower told the Adelaide Advertiser.

Stuart GowerMorgan Dollar has a 50% winning strike-rate first-up and also boasts a 50% place strike-rate when second-up.

The five-year-old trialed at Morphettville on Monday morning and was dominant in his five-horse trial over 1000m.

Apart from winning the trial by over three lengths ahead of the David Jolly trained Carbon Date, Morgan Dollar ran the quickest time for five furlongs all morning, 1.00.11.

An enigmatic galloper at the best of times, Morgan Dollar has won and been placed on four occasions from 22 starts.

The son of Planchet won two races as a two-year-old but couldn’t maintain his unbeaten status into the 2007/08 season as he finished seventh – beaten two lengths – in the Listed Dermody Stakes (1000m) for two and three-year-olds at Cheltenham.

After an unsuccessful three-year-old spring preparation in Melbourne, Morgan Dollar found form – albeit briefly – when he won a 3yo Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield by four lengths.

Morgan DollarHis form tapered off again before being freshened for the Dermody Stakes as a three-year-old, and in doing so, avenged for his defeat the previous season.

Since then, Morgan Dollar has failed to return to the winners’ enclosure however has been gallant in defeat on several occasions as epitomised by his two seconds in the Group 3 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley behind Kaphero and Nicconi as well as his fourth in the 2009 Oakleigh Plate.

Can Hopwood Win The Premiership?

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/40787-can-hopwood-win-the-premiership.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/jockeys/libbyhopwood.jpg desc=South Australian apprentice Libby Hopwood is riding the crest of a wave and is eager to keep her momentum going... size=small}

Libby HopwoodSouth Australian apprentice Libby Hopwood is riding the crest of a wave and is eager to keep her momentum going throughout the Adelaide autumn carnival in order to keep her premiership aspirations alive.

Hopwood, 22, has only been riding competitively for two and a half years but that hasn’t prevented her from riding winners at constant intervals since the commencement of the 2009/10 season in August.

Hopwood rode a treble at Morphettville Parks on Saturday and then repeated the feat 24 hours later at Port Lincoln.

She currently leads the Adelaide Jockeys’ Premiership with 29 wins, a margin of 3.5 wins ahead of Ben Claridge and Chad Lever on 26.

Her treble at Port Lincoln has edged her 1.5 wins clear of Lever for the South Australian Jockeys’ Premiership and ensured that Hopwood will no longer claim an allowance in the provincial area starting from today's meeting at Murray Bridge.

Her 2kg claim in the metropolitan area will still exist.

And though you could forgive Hopwood for being solely motivated on premiership success, the former archaeology and forensic science university student is keen to retain rides on leading Richard Jolly runners over the upcoming carnival.

Lamenting her lack of participation last season due to connections selecting more experienced or interstate riders, Hopwood has made her intentions clear.

“Last year over the carnival I sat on the sidelines, this year I hope to be more involved,” Hopwood told Sport 927.

Given that Hopwood can ride at 49kgs, there is always the possibility she could snare a lightweight hope in a feature race such as the Goodwood.

Formerly indentured to Michael O’Leary at Mount Gambier, Hopwood transferred to Morphettville-based Richard Jolly a year ago and has enjoyed great success under the tutelage of the former rider.

Hopwood has won 43 races in the metropolitan area, 36 in provincial areas (such as Gawler and Strathalbyn) and 38 in the country.

Leading South Australian jockey Simon Price is recovering after a spectacular fall at Morphettville on Wednesday.

Price, 39, was transported to Flinders Medical Centre for observation and x-rays with a suspected broken nose after his mount Kersace lost his action and crashed to the turf inside the final furlong.

Price will not ride at Saturday’s meeting at Morphettville Parks and although he is booked for three rides at Port Lincoln on Sunday, is under considerable doubt to fulfil those engagements.

Trained by Mark Kavanagh, Kersace trotted away unscathed from the fall but has since been suspended from racing until a TRSA Veterinary Surgeon viewed the results of a full physiological veterinary examination.

It is expected Kersace will also have to trial to stewards satisfaction prior to racing competitively again.

Before the fall, Price was third in the Adelaide Jockeys’ Premiership on 24 wins behind Libby Hopwood and Ben Claridge however has now slipped back into fourth after Chad Lever rode a double at yesterday’s meeting.

Bill EganPromising apprentice Billy Egan had an afternoon to remember at Morphettville on Saturday riding three winners.

Egan, who is currently indentured to trainer Mark Kavanagh at Flemington, partnered Rock The Moment, Galileo's Dream and Navmann all to victory for his master.

It was the first time Egan, 19, has ever ridden a metropolitan treble and the first time Egan has ridden a winner in Adelaide.

However that feat was overshadowed slightly by an untimely five meeting suspension which will see Egan sidelined till mid-January.

Stewards deemed that after passing the winning post aboard Navmann in the $26,500 Holdfast Insurance 0-86 Handicap (1200m), Egan shifted in onto Allstar (Paul Gatt) taking that gelding across the running of Law School (Lauren Stojakovic), which was forced to check when tightened onto Taos Pleasure (Tilly Neve), resulting in the veteran sprinter contacting the running rail.

He was charged guilty of careless riding by stewards and will resume riding after the 14th of January.

Mark KavanaghFor Kavanagh, Egan’s treble and the victory of recent stable recruit Tuscany View ensured the Melbourne Cup winning trainer would notch up his second quartet in Adelaide this season after Catapulted, French Secret, Believe 'N' Succeed and Luce Del Mare all saluted on November 14.

Kavanagh’s rise to the top this season in Adelaide has been of epic proportions.

Last season Kavanagh had trained 25 winners (including two dead-heats) across South Australia, with 13 of those victories in the metro area. He finished ninth in the metropolitan trainers’ premiership.

Less than half of the 2009/10 season has elapsed but Kavanagh has trained 27 winners in the Adelaide metropolitan area, to go 5 ½ wins clear of his nearest rival Richard Jolly, with another seven registered in country areas.

Tuscany View, winner of the $26,500 Clark Sinks Handicap (1600m), will be aimed at the Birthday Cup (1800m) on January 30 while Galileo's Dream is expected to head towards the 70,000 Port Adelaide Cup (2250m) on February 13.
