Below is Carl Di Iorio's preview for this afternoon's Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup meeting at Morphettville.

Stay with the Virtual Formguide throughout the afternoon for comprehensive coverage of one of South Australia's biggest meetings.

1 11:15 Myer Fashions On The Field Hcp - 1100m

Get Set is the class horse of the race and clearly the one to beat. However with 57kgs (after the claim of Hopwood), Get Set is there to be beaten. Court Bell is racing in excellent form. Starting from barrier three, should get the run of the race just off the speed. Get Set has been racing against better opposition and therefore must respect. Falvelon's Dream was too bad to be true last start. Must replicate the run at Caulfield on Australia Day to be in the mix. Subprime was beaten soundly but La Bella Roo last start but made significant ground late. Kiss The Cash far from hopeless however wide draw is a concern.

Court Bell - Get Set - Falvelon's Dream - Subprime

2 11:55 A. Scott Pk Morphettville Hcp - 1200m

Our Saint is the obvious selection however if he’s not on his game and the likes of Idalou and Bondarchuk perform to their best, an upset could be on the cards. Our Saint draws wide but has the lethal combination of Kavanagh & Rodd. First-Up form is sound without being special. Usually takes one or two runs to come to hand and see his best. Shadrach broke his maiden status end of last prep and was an eye-catching run when resuming. Has claims. Wide open after that however the provincial form of Almost Cheval shouldn’t be discounted.

Our Saint – Shadrach – Bondarchuk - Almost Cheval

3 12:32 Pewsey Vale Cinderella Stakes (LR) - 1050m

Impossible to select anything with any confidence. Across The Moon has proven to date that he can match it with some handy horses in Melbourne. If he transfers that form across to SA he’ll be more than competitive. Obsidian Dragon can improve on last effort while the hype on debut surrounding Almost Discreet was significant without delivering from three runs to date. One for multiples. Unraced Kavanagh pair must be kept safe but in particularly Unfaithfully.

Across The Moon – Unfaithfully – Almost Discreet – Obsidian Dragon

4 01:12 Sportingbet M.M. 2yo Classic - 1200m

Another tricky 2yo race. Lone Rock defeated Across The Moon and depending on the performance of that runner in the previous event, Lone Rock could start a short-priced pick. Prepared to leave Rose Of Scotland just for the multiples. Cuddles For Narra hasn’t been disgraced in two runs back from spell. Red Belly Black is an improving type while Toorak Toff will be chasing hard from a midfield position in the straight. Lilgiggleo best of the locals and has some nice form. Once again, watch betting with unraced runners.

Lone Rock – Cuddles For Narra – Lilgiggleo – Red Belly Black

5 01:50 Dunes Port Hughes R Irwin Stks (G3) - 1100m

Cracking race that could be dominated by the mares! Periduki loves to run them off their legs and ran out the six furlongs strongly last time. Something tells me he’ll struggle to see out the shorter 1100m trip today with better sit-sprinters breathing down his neck. Very Discreet has a bright future ahead of her and boasts nice first-up record. Excellent down the straight at Flemington and will get a strong 1100m. All the signs point to a big run by Cerberus Girl as well while Sydney visitor Madame Pedrille cannot be dismissed.

Very Discreet – Cerberus Girl – Madame Pedrille – Periduki

6 02:30 Schweppervescence Stakes (LR) - 2008m

Swooper looks well placed here in this event. Solid third in Listed company and then won nicely at Moonee Valley. Summery was due to contest Adelaide Cup but missed vital lead-up race last Saturday and drops in distance here. Capable of running cheeky race. Princess Marizza second in a Group 2 also is well placed but for her poor record over 2000m. Starmon is a each-way chance.

Swooper (Best) – Summery – Starmon – Princess Marizza

7 03:10 Adel. A'port T1 Adelaide Gneas (LR) - 1600m

I’m Discreet looks set to continue her recent run of form here with a win. Boasts a great record of five wins and two placings from seven starts – the sort of record reserved for decent horses. From gate three, she shouldn’t get too far away from the pace expected to be set by Aloha. Aloha could get away with cheap sectionals in front and doesn’t lay down without a fight as My Emotion and Speedy Natalie found out at Moonee Valley recently. Chances for the multiples are Storm Brewing, Furline and Nakaaya who are all likely to come with the one run down the outside. King Diamond worked home well at Caulfield behind Denman last time and more improvement is expected.

I’m Discreet – Aloha – Storm Brewing – Nakaaya

8 03:52 Yallambee Classic (G2) - 1200m

Can Hooness run a strong 1200m? That’s the question that’s central to this race. Is she can she’ll be awfully hard to run down with her bold front running tactics. Presuming she won’t, Happy Hippy, Luce Del Mare and Sister Madly have drawn ideally to be at the front of the chasing pack. Sister Madly has been prepared for the event with a couple of handy trial wins while Happy Hippy was unlucky and had an interrupted passage in the straight. The wide barrier of Luminous Harmony has me worried but looks well placed while Majestic Music is no slouch and could figure first-up.

Happy Hippy – Sister Madly – Hooness – Majestic Music

9 04:35 Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup (G2) - 3200m

This year’s Adelaide Cup admittedly might be a little down on quality but there is a winner to be found all the same. Dwayne Dunn expressed some concern over Moment In Time running out the two miles but I don’t think she’ll have a problem. Doesn’t need to lead, can sit off them and will be in the finish. Capecover was a nice run last time and gave the signs of a horse ready to run two miles in strong fashion. Brad Star will relish the extra trip. Ran in the Adelaide Cup last year and he’ll be in the finish at the business end of the race. Place chances to many runners but give thought to Dolphin Jo, Kerdem, Itstheone and Al Wafi. Fairygem a little suspect at the trip while King Of The Sun at long odds might be worth some thought for those looking for value in their First 4’s.

Moment In Time – Capecover – Brad Star – Al Wafi

10 05:25 Boag's Draught Hcp - 1050m

Excellerant looks the best placed horse here in another open affair. Has been thereabouts at last couple and should run up to that form. The maiden win of Globalwarminsceptic was impressive but it was at Narracoorte. Watch betting. You Dee Cee doesn’t have Hooness to contend with in the lead here and could start silly odds. Djatala is a smart horse but worried about the wide barrier. Has raced against harder opposition however. Keep Villero safe.

Excellerant – You Dee Cee – Djatala - Globalwarminsceptic

Dunn’s Distance Query With Moment In Time

Moment In TimeDespite winning the 2008 VRC St. Leger (2800m) at Flemington, Moment In Time is no certainty to stay the two mile journey of this Monday’s $400,000 Group Two Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup (3200m) according to her rider Dwayne Dunn.

Dunn, who has ridden Moment In Time four times previously for a win and two placings, holds some reservations over her stamina in Adelaide’s premier staying event.

“She’s never won over the distance, that’s possibly the only concern,” Dunn said.

“In the St. Leger they walked with slow sectionals to the leader - It hard to assess that.

“Some better horses are obviously coming from Melbourne to tackle the race but she’s the best of the locals for sure.

“Hopefully I can get a good run in fourth, fifth and sixth or something like that.

“If she runs the trip she’ll be more than competitive again,” Dunn insisted.

Dunn knows the attributes required for a mare to win an Adelaide Cup. He partnered the Dan O’ Sullivan trained Lacey Underall to victory two years ago.

However his booking for the ride hasn’t been without some controversy.

Trained by Mick Huxtable, Moment In Time won the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) last Saturday with leading South Australian rider Chad Lever, who has ridden the mare at four of her last five starts, in the saddle.

Huxtable, who is the uncle of Lever, was supportive of his relation retaining the ride however connections decided to enlist the services of Dunn much to Lever’s disappointment.

Lever will now ride Nitonic, an outsider from the Colette Cooper stable.

TAB Fixed Odds has Lord Reims Stakes placegetter Capecover as $6 favourite with the Mick Kent trained Montahlia the next best at $6.50.

As Dunn suggests, Moment In Time is the best of the locals rated a $7 chance.

Libby HopwoodSeven-year-old gelding Dujac ran the race of his life to win Thursday’s $40,000 Carlton Draught Port Lincoln Cup (1950m).

The race was run at a genuine tempo as expected with the son of Jeune allowed to find his feet at the rear of the field.

At the 500m mark when approaching the home turn, country non-claiming apprentice Libby Hopwood allowed Dujac to commence a run around the extreme outside of the incredibly bunched field.

Dujac enjoyed an uninterrupted passage out wide off the track, while many of his more fancied rivals struggled to gain clear running, and hit the lead full of running at the 150m mark.

Yaterberry finished strongly over the concluding stages out of the chasing pack but Dujac had opened up an unassailable lead.

The Dennis O’ Leary trained Dujac ($15) defeated Yaterberry ($4.20 fav) by three quarters of a length with reigning champion Over The Road ($4.80) finishing a gusty third beaten 3.4 lengths from the winner.

Starting from the outside alley, Over The Road was caught three and four deep out of the straight with Dom Tourneur pressing forward to make Over The Road sit outside the speed for the majority of the race.

For Hopwood it was another feature race win after notching her first stakes victory last month aboard I’m Discreet in the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1400m).

Only yesterday Hopwood was involved in a barrier incident when Bel Fame reared up in the stalls before the second event at Murray Bridge.

Hopwood was stood down for one ride but returned to fulfil the remainder of her engagements, fortuitously avoiding serious injury.

A winner of four from 38 starts but with seven second placings next to his name, Dujac has now won in excess of $50,000 in prizemoney.

Excitement is building in the lead up to next week’s $400,000 Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup, with the fortunes of up to 20 Cup hopefuls to be determined at the official Barrier Draw on Wednesday.

Held at the Adelaide Casino, the 2010 Adelaide Cup Barrier Draw will attract the who’s who of the local racing industry – from three-time Cup winner and guest speaker John Letts, to trainers including Karina O’Sullivan.

Among the hopefuls is 2008 Winning Edge Stakes winner Dolphin Joe, 2010 Hobart Cup champion Growl and 2010 Mornington Cup winner Capecover. Local trainer of 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking has two starters – Itstheone and Tuscany.

South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) CEO Brenton Wilkinson said a stellar field of horses meant increased anticipation for this year’s draw.

“The Barrier Draw is an extremely important event for trainers, jockeys and punters alike as it sets the tone for the event – the right barrier number can pay significant dividends when it comes to race day,” Brenton said.

“This year’s Cup boasts one of the strongest fields we’ve seen in recent years – it’s great to see a number of local and interstate horses, trainers and jockeys keen to make their mark on South Australia’s premier racing event.”

Young apprentice Jordan Frew has been suspended for three meetings after TRSA stewards on Saturday adjudicated that he used the whip excessively over the concluding stages of a race.

Frew, 16, was riding his self confessed favourite horse Frenzilian trained by his father Kevin Frew in the $32,000 8 Rar Long Hai Memorial Handicap (2600m) at Morphettville.

St FraserStewards were of the opinion Frew used the whip when out of contention and also after when his mount had failed to respond to his riding.

Frenzilian eventually finished last in the race, beaten 16.4 lengths by the winner Nitonic and over seven lengths from the fifth placegetter Rock ‘N’ Ready.

Frew pleaded guilty to two charges and will be suspended from March 3 till the eve of the Adelaide Cup on March 7.

It means he will miss the second and final day of the Port Lincoln Cup carnival on Thursday.

In determining their penalty, stewards took into consideration that Frew had used the whip prior to the home turn to test Frenzilian and that it was also his third recent breach of the rule.

Frew, who made his riding debut last February, has secured both his metropolitan victories aboard the Ken Matson-trained St Fraser who on Boxing Day last year won the $30,000 final of the Star Of Xmas Series (1400m) at Morphettville Parks.
