Crack Melbourne filly Rinky Dink will be given a short break from the track to prepare for a double Group One mission after a stylish win in today’s listed Tasmanian Oaks at Launceston.

A graduate of the 2002 Magic Millions Adelaide Select Yearling Sale, Rinky Dink proved much too classy for her rivals in today’s fillies feature – cruising home for a soft win despite racing ungenerously early in the staying classic.

A member of the powerful Rick Hore-Lacy stable, Rinky Dink was sent out a warm favourite for today’s Oaks event after a super last start win at Flemington in Melbourne.

“It was an impressive effort today,” Hore-Lacy reported from the Magic Millions Sale in Adelaide. “She didn’t want to settle much early but her effort was full of merit.”

Hore-Lacy said the daughter of Distorted Humor, who is part owned by her breeder Peter Liston of Lakewood Stud, would have a short break from the track before being aimed at the Australasian and South Australian Oaks in Adelaide during May.

“Her main missions will be in the Oaks races here (in Adelaide) over the carnival,” Hore-Lacy commented. “I’m sure she is going to prove right up to those races.”

Hore-Lacy has been an active buyer during the first two sessions of the Adelaide Sales and he is looking forward to bidding for a few more attractive types at the complex tomorrow.

Rinky Dink’s dam Peebinga Princess (served by General Nediym) and weanling half brother by Galileo are catalogued for the Lakewood Classic Collection Sale on April 4.

RACE 2 - BRENDON McCOULL CLASS 1 HANDICAP – DIVISION 1 1550 METRES  -  9 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed approximately eight minutes when KRAKOW (J Borrett) became fractious after being loaded into its barrier stall and as a result CELTIC FLING (S Snell) became fractious in turn, breaking through the front of its barrier stall without its rider (Jockey Snell).  CELTIC FLING then cantered around the entire course and pushed its way through one of the barrier partitions near the mounting yard.  CELTIC FLING was captured by the Clerks of the Course, returned to behind the barriers where the gelding was inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to take its place with the field.

KRAKOW (J Borrett) after being loaded into its barrier stall for the second time, proved very fractious again.  In view of this gelding’s behaviour, Trainer John Blacker was advised that KRAKOW has been stood down to an official jump-out during which it has to display improved behaviour with at least two other companions.

When questioned about her riding on SLEIGHT, Jockey Burt stated that she had no specific instructions for today’s event and it was her intention to race this horse from a handy position close to the lead.  She further stated that this mare began a little tardily and shortly after entering the straight she first elected for a run to the inside of PARIS RHYME (D Pires) but had to switch to the outside of this mare shortly thereafter.  She was also of the view that for the remainder of the straight there was only limited racing room between PARIS RHYME (D Pires) and SCENTIAN BELLE (S Snell), and for fear of causing interference to these runners, she did not attempt a run between them.  Stewards advised Jockey Burt that on this occasion they afforded her the benefit of the doubt and whilst her riding on this occasion fell short of a contravention of the rule relating to taking all reasonable and permissible measures, she is to ensure that in future she rides her mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query.

A swab sample was taken from the third placegetter of this race PARISH RHYME (Trainer T Roles).

Caulfield trainer Peter Moody was all smiles today after his highly promising stayer Zacielo drew a great barrier for the AAMI $200,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) at Mowbray next Wednesday.

Zacielo is chasing the feature cups double having already captured the $200,000 AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) last Monday week.

Zacielo drew barrier three which is ideal considering the four-year-old Zabeel gelding has loads of early pace that will give his rider Craig Newitt every opportunity to be in the box seat from the outset.

Other interstate contenders to fare well at the barrier draw held in the Launceston City Mall today are the Tony McEvoy-trained pair Saturday Fever and Nikalapko, drawing barriers four and seven respectively.

Saturday Fever ran third in last year's AAMI Launceston Cup when drawn very wide, but this year's draw is more in his favour.

Gunnamatta, who created history this week by winning his third successive Mornington Cup, was not so well served drawing gate 16 and grand campaigner Liquid Lunch from the Chris Hyland stable drew barrier 19.

The worst drawn of the interstate invaders is Lester Thunderwing, who will start from near the outside gate (20).

Star Tasmanian stayer St. Andrews is attempting to win his fourth AAMI Launceston Cup and record-breaking third in succession and he drew ideally in barrier six, while the state's other top chance in the race Dream Quest drew barrier 13.

Dream Quest was a luckless second to Zacielo in last week's AAMI Hobart Cup and St. Andrews finished on the heels of the minor placegetters.

The AAMI Launceston Cup field will comprise 16 starters with five emergencies declared and should none of the emergencies gain a start then Zacielo will jump from barrier one owing to two of the emergencies, Officer Barbrady and Ionacolumba, drawing barriers one and two respectively.

Barrier draw for the AAMI Launceston Cup on Wednesday, February 25, 2004.
