Tassie Jumps Protest Dismissed (After 3 Months)

"It wasn't one of my hardest decisions."

That's the way Racing Victoria chief steward Des Gleeson described yesterday's revisited protest into the Tasmanian Grand National Steeple - a race run at Deloraine in Tasmania in April.

Gleeson chaired a three member board in Launceston yesterday to rehear the protest after the original upheld protest result was cancelled by Tasmanian racing officials.

Kwila's Quest, who following that win went on for a brilliant win in the Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool in May, was originally first past the post in the feature Deloraine event before being sensationally relegated to third after a protest.

The gelding, with amateur cross country hoop Paul Graesser in the saddle, was some seven and a half lengths clear of the field but a protest by Bill Williams the rider of the third placegetter Lord Chance was successful after a short hearing.

It was discovered that two of the stewards on the panel at Deloraine on the day were closely related to the jockey and trainer of the second placegetter (Interfet) - who after the upheld protest became the race's new winner.

Des Gleeson, the Victorian steward panel chief, said the three member panel rehearing yesterday's objection had no option but to dismiss the protest. The other members of the panel were Victorian deputy chairman Terry Sharp and South Australia's chief stipe Graham Loch.

"The decision to dismiss the protest was unanimous," Gleeson reported. "I've certainly had plenty of tougher protests to decide on."
