Queensland galloper Osca Eric's AAMI Hobart Cup campaign has been terminated following the gelding's disappointing performance at Flemington last Saturday.

Osca Eric was ranked one of the best chances to win next week's feature at Elwick following two encouraging runs in Melbourne but the gelding's latest effort has left his trainer Gary Farrell devastated.

"I have had to pull the pin on the trip to Tassie because his run on Saturday was just woeful," Farrell said.

"Greg (jockey Childs), said the horse was gone 800m from home and it would be senseless to make the trip across to Tassie. The horse appears very good in himself and that's the worrying part of it all. I was confident I had the horse right but sometimes they'll (horses) do this sort of thing to you.

"I've nominated him for a race at Flemington next Sunday and that will tell me whether he's definitely trained off, but if he happened to produce his best in that race then I'd look seriously at going to Tassie for the AAMI Launceston Cup later this month," he said.

Another AAMI Hobart Cup candidate that won't be making the trip across Bass Strait is the Clarry Conners-trained Irish Noble. The four-year-old gelding was to have had his final hit-out in the same race in which Osca Eric ran so poorly last Saturday, but was scratched due to the heavy track..

"The owners of Irish Noble were very keen to come to Tasmania but without that extra run under his belt we have had to give the AAMI Hobart Cup a miss but if everything goes as planned he'll run at Flemington on Sunday and then we'll make arrangements to head to Tasmania for the AAMI Launceston Cup two weeks later," Conners said.

Stewards questioned Trainer Catherine Jordan in relation to the apparent improved performance of WILLCANNIA in today’s event.  Trainer Jordan stated that WILLCANNIA prefers a wet track and in her opinion this gelding was better suited to today’s track conditions.    Trainer Jordan’s explanation was noted.

Jockey J Borrett reported at scale that WEST QUEST BOY did not handle the tight track today.

A post-race veterinary inspection of CREIGHTON (NZ) (Trainer Neil Richardson) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 4 – FEDERAL HOTELS & RESORTS 1000 GUINEAS 3-Y-O FILLIES - NO CLAIMS – SET WEIGHTS - LISTED 1600 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey D Taggart (the rider of the third place getter QUEEN OF EGYPT) requested to review the video with a view to lodging a protest.  After viewing the video, Jockey Taggart declared that he wished to lodge a protest against GENUINE BLONDE (F Alesci) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference from the 200 metre mark to the finishing line.  After hearing submissions from the relevant parties and taking into account video footage of the incident, Stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was declared.  At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey Alesci was found guilty of a charge under AR-137(a) (careless riding), the terms of the charge being that whilst riding GENUINE BLONDE, he allowed this filly to shift ground outwards at about the fifty metre mark when insufficiently clear of QUEEN OF EGYPT resulting in Jockey Taggart having to check his mount for several strides.  Jockey Alesci was subsequently suspended from riding in races effective from midnight today, Sunday 25 January 2004 and to expire at midnight Sunday, 1 February 2004 (the equivalent of two race meetings in Tasmania).  Jockey Alesci was advised of his right of appeal.

GENUINE BLONDE (F Alesci) was slow to begin.

TOM’S TOP (B McCoull) over-raced in the middle stages of the event.

Rounding the home turn QUEEN OF EGYPT (D Taggart) switched to the outside of CAITLIN’S BEST (W Davis) to improve and in doing so carried INVERMAY GIRL (L Goodrick) out on to REVECHE (P Mertens) resulting in these two horses making contact.  As a result of this incident, GALVANIZED (D Pires) who was following to the outside and behind these horses, was also slightly inconvenienced.  Jockey Taggart was shown the video of the incident and advised to take far greater care when electing for a run in future.

Approaching the 200 metre mark, CAITLIN’S BEST (W Davis) switched to the outside of runners in front to improve and at the same time INVERMAY GIRL (L Goodrick) shifted ground inwards under pressure.  As a result INVERMAY GIRL had to be checked off the heels of CAITLIN’S BEST shortly thereafter.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race GENUINE BLONDE (Trainer Gary White).

RACE 5 – INGHAM JOCKEY CLUB CUP – 2200 METRES – 13 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed due to KIMBERLEY QUEST (J Borrett) having to undergo a veterinary inspection before returning to the mounting yard after participating in this event.  Stewards accompanied Jockey Borrett to the Scales area where she was weighed in at the correct weight.  A post-race veterinary inspection of KIMBERLEY QUEST revealed the gelding to be lame in its off foreleg.  Trainer John Blacker was advised that he must tender a veterinary certificate of soundness before KIMBERLEY QUEST’S next official trial or race start.

RAHIRI (D Pires) was slow into stride.

KIMBERLEY QUEST (J Borrett) and JONES (S Gates) were inclined to over-race in the early stages.

At about the 800 metre mark, KIMBERLEY QUEST (J Borrett) when awkwardly placed on the heels of CONVERSATIONS (W Davis), had to be steadied and shifted to the outside of these horses.

Saturday Fever at Peak for Hobart Cup

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/tasmania/21908--sp-987843954.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/tasmania.gif desc=Premier South Australian trainer Tony McEvoy has pinned his hopes of snaring back-to-back AAMI Group 3 Hobart Cups (2400m.) on... size=small}
Premier South Australian trainer Tony McEvoy has pinned his hopes of snaring back-to-back AAMI Group 3 Hobart Cups (2400m.) on last-start Flemington winner Saturday Fever.

McEvoy prepared Jeune’s Mark to win last year’s $200,000 race and he believes Saturday Fever has what it takes to win his first Group race at Elwick on February 9.

“I couldn't be happier with Saturday Fever after his win at Flemington and it is all systems go for Hobart,” McEvoy said.

“We targeted this race for the horse about six months ago and he has done everything expected of him this preparation.

“He won’t have another run between now and the AAMI Hobart Cup and he will go on to Launceston (Cup) if he pulls up well after the Hobart race,” he said.

Saturday Fever has had five starts this preparation, of which three were in Victoria and all unplaced before McEvoy whisked him back to SA just before Christmas for a race at Cheltenham (1800m), which he won convincingly.

The five-year-old gelding by Groom Dancer from Not On Friday then went to Flemington where he won narrowly but convincingly over 2000 metres on January 16.

“I thought his Flemington win was excellent and his trackwork since has been outstanding, so he will go into the AAMI Hobart Cup at his absolute peak,” McEvoy said.

Apprentice Joel Hallam rode Saturday Fever at Flemington, but McEvoy confirmed his senior stable rider Aaron Spiteri would partner the horse in the AAMI Hobart Cup.

Saturday Fever was third in last year’s AAMI Launceston Cup (2400m.) with local rider Stephen Maskiell aboard and McEvoy was considering him (Maskiell) for the AAMI Hobart Cup ride.

“I was very pleased with Stephen’s (Maskiell) ride on this horse in Launceston last year but Aaron (Spiteri) was keen to ride the horse,” the trainer said.

Last year McEvoy opted to send Jeune’s Mark to Tasmania by sea and the gelding spent a week acclimatising in Hobart, but Saturday Fever will be sent to the Apple Isle by air.

“I don’t have the same number of staff available to send Saturday Fever by sea, so he’ll get there (Hobart) by plane and he will return to Melbourne after the race and then go back to Tassie by plane with stablemate Nikalapko for the AAMI Launceston Cup (on February 25),” McEvoy said.

Of the 27 first acceptors for the AAMI Hobart Cup, 11 are from interstate and includes last-start Caulfield winner Zacielo, the Graeme Rogerson-trained Triptonian and last year’s Tasmanian Derby placegetter Irish Noble from the Clarry Conners stable.

Star local galloper Kimberley Quest was a first acceptor for the AAMI Hobart Cup but his season and possibly his racing career came to an end in Hobart last Sunday when he broke down after winning the Jockey Club Cup (2200m.) by six lengths.

Kimberley Quest fractured the canon bone in his offside front leg and will undergo an operation later this week.

The gelding’s trainer John Blacker was devastated. “It never ceases to amaze me this racing caper. One second I’m on top of the world watching my best horse demolish his rivals and the next second he’s broken down,” Blacker said.

“But at least we still have a horse and there is a chance that he could come back and still show everyone how good he is.

“I’ve spoken to (veterinary surgeon) Alistair McLean and he will return from New Zealand this week and operate on the horse in Launceston and then we will have to wait and see what happens,” Blacker said.

Queensland 'Bushies' On Hobart Cup Track

The AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival has spread its wings as far north as Queensland’s top end this year with Townsville galloper Osca Eric being prepared for a tilt at next month’s AAMI Hobart and AAMI Launceston Cups double.

Osca Eric has been campaigning in Melbourne this past month and despite being beaten by another AAMI Hobart Cup hopeful, Zacielo, at Caulfield last Saturday, Osca Eric’s trainer Gary Farrell remains focused on the Tasmania assignment for his five-year-old.

Osca Eric was a certainty beaten at his previous outing at Caulfield when second to Si Senor in an open handicap over 2000m. This followed an eye-catching unplaced run in a 1400m welter at Flemington on New Year Day, which was his first start outside of Queensland in this preparation.

Farrell set his sights on the AAMI Tasmanian Carnival early last year.

“I contemplated entering Osca Eric for the major Tassie cups last year but I thought the competition might be a bit too rich, but when I saw Jeune’s Mark win the Hobart Cup I realised I’d probably made a blue because my horse beat it (Jeune’s Mark) home easily in a race in Melbourne before the Hobart Cup,” Farrell said.

“It was back in March that I thought seriously about taking Osca Eric to Tassie and that’s when I set about planning the trip,” he said.

Osca Eric won two races in Melbourne last season at his first venture south of Queensland and then went on to contest the

Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) in which he finished last of seven behind Northerly.

“I’m not afraid of taking on the best about with this horse because you often only ever get one chance at the top races and when a horse is racing at his peak you have to make the most of any opportunity that comes your way,” Farrell said.

Osca Eric hasn’t won since he outgunned Arch Force and You Little Beaut at Caulfield in January last year but Farrell is quietly confident the stallion will return to the winner’s circle at Flemington on Saturday week.

“I’ll send him around in a 2500m handicap at Flemington in a fortnight and that will be his final lead-up to the Hobart Cup, which will hopefully give him winning form going into the Tassie race,” he said.

Farrell, 49, has been training in Townsville for more than two decades and regards himself as a “laid back bloke” with a passion for racing.

“I’m just a bushie and the horse is the same,” he said. “All we need is a paddock with a shed on it to be comfortable. We don’t need anything fancy.

“This horse seems to like the anti-clockwise way of going and that’s the main reason we are down this neck of the woods.

“I’ll take him to Tassie on the boat (Sprit Of Tasmania) after the Flemington run and I just hope we can find suitable stabling and accommodation because this horse can’t be cooped-up in a box seven days a week.”

Osca Eric has earned more than $150,000 in prizemoney from his 45 starts, comprising eight wins, 11 seconds and seven thirds.

While Farrell remains focused on the AAMI Hobart and AAMI Launceston Cups, so too is AAMI Hobart Cup-winning trainer Tony McEvoy, who had success with Jeune’s Mark in last year’s $200,000 Group 3 event.

McEvoy confirmed recent Flemington winner Saturday Fever will be his sole runner in the AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 9, following the gelding’s impressive win at Flemington in the Think Big Handicap (2000m) last Friday.

Saturday Fever ran third behind St. Andrews in the AAMI Launceston Cup (2400m) last year with local jockey Stephen Maskiell aboard.

Zacielo’s trainer Peter Moody said the lightly raced four-year-old would be his only AAMI Hobart Cup candidate but he would wait to see if the gelding received a penalty for his Caulfield win last Saturday before making any concrete plans to make the trip to Tasmania.

Zacielo was handicapped on the minimum of 51kg. in the AAMI Hobart Cup, but as the gelding defeated Osca Eric by three lengths and finished further ahead of other AAMI Hobart Cup entries, Tully Thunder (third) and Southern Crown (fourth), Tasmanian handicapper Bernie McKay could see the performance as worthy of a weight penalty.

MASKIELL IS BEST OF MODERN JOCKEYS

Tasmanian jockey Stephen Maskiell has the best modern-day record in the AAMI Hobart Cup with three successes. Maskiell had his first Cup win with Nakagima in 1989, followed by Russian Rogue in 1992 and rode St. Andrews to victory in 2002 in the race record time of 2:27.65.

Fellow Tasmanian rider Kevin Dodge has won the race twice, scoring back-to-back successes in 1994-95 with Southern States and Courtly Way, respectively.

TWO SHARE JOCKEYS’ RECORD OF FOUR

A victory for Tasmanian jockey Stephen Maskiell in this year’s AAMI Hobart Cup would place him in elite company. A win would provide Maskiell with four AAMI Hobart Cup victories and a shared record with Eddie Cox and Edwin Power.

Cox, who was Tasmania’s leading rider for 17 consecutive seasons, won on
Stylish Lady (1938), Seriki (1955 and 1956) and Welton (1961). Power’s victories were on Chaldean (1889), Macquarie (1890), Hopetoun (1892) and Amadeus (1894).

Maskiell won on Nakagima (1989), Russian Rogue (1992) and St. Andrews (2002).

Local rider Beverley Buckingham was well on her way to equalling the record until an accident in 1998, ended her career. She was the first female rider of an AAMI Hobart Cup winner aboard Dark Intruder in 1986 and followed with victories on Jam City (1996) and L’Espion (1998). Beverley currently trains at Benalla (Vic.) and had her first winner, Give Us A Buzz, at Wangaratta on January 18, 2004.

TRAINERS TARGET THIRD TROPHY

Tasmanian trainers George Blacker, Charlie Goggin and Gary White are chasing their third AAMI Hobart Cup trophy this year. Goggin won with Russian Rogue (1992) and Brorama Star (2001), White with L’Espion (1998) and Lord Baracus (2000) and Blacker with Courtly Way (1995) and St. Andrews (2002).

Trainers with a chance of adding to their one previous success include Tony McEvoy (Jeune’s Mark, 2003), Ken Keys (Jam City, 1996) and Lee Freedman (Brisque, 1988). The odds are against McEvoy as the last back-to-back wins were by trainer Helen Patterson in 1984-85.

Dick Abbott and Bill Clare jointly hold the AAMI Hobart Cup training record with six winners apiece.

THIRD TIME LUCKY?

Former New Zealand trainer Michael Moroney, who prepared Melbourne Cup winner Brew in 2000, is hoping for a change of luck in this year’s AAMI Hobart Cup.

For the past two years Moroney has been in the runners-up stall following the second placings of Imax in 2002, a half-length behind St.Andrews and last year with The Mighty Lions, 2.5 lengths behind Jeune’s Mark.

The Flemington trainer has the six-year-old mare Lithgow Flash nominated for this year’s race.

TRAINER AND BREEDER’S RACE QUINELLA

Elwick-based trainer Gary White had the thrill of preparing both first and second placegetters on his home track in the 1998 AAMI Hobart Cup. White prepared the winner L’Espion and the second horse, Free Beer, a dual AAMI Launceston Cup winner. The one-two feat was also an achievement for prominent Tasmanian breeder Brian Higgins, who bred both horses at his Oaklington Thoroughbreds property at Tea Tree.

It was the first race quinella for a trainer since 1961 when Andy Robertson was successful with Welton and Dark Spot.

ST. ANDREWS’ RACE RECORD

Tasmanian iron horse St. Andrews set a new track record of 2min.27.65sec.when winning the AAMI Hobart Cup in 2002.

The record of 2min.28.3sec. was previously held by former AAMI Hobart Cup winners Future Shock (1999) and Lady Have A Heart (1991).

UNUSUAL DOUBLE

Former Elwick trainer Jock Dobie enjoyed AAMI Hobart Cup success as both a jockey and trainer.

Dobie rode the 1919 winner Prince Moeraki and trained four subsequent winners, the tough galloper Seriki (1955-56), Buzzie in 1957 and King’s Thane in 1959. No trainer since Dobie has completed the difficult assignment of preparing three consecutive AAMI Hobart Cup winners. The previously successful trainer was Cecil Crossin in 1947-48-49 with his respective winners Wingfire (Scobie Breasley), Evade (Frank King) and The Artist (Tommy Unkovich).

Random pre-race blood samples were taken from the following horses:

                     JONES                       (Trainer Charlie Goggin)

                     TWIN TUB                 (Trainer Chris Crook)

                     CORINDHAP             (Trainer Max Wood)

                     CRESATATE               (Trainer Allan Stubbs)

The start of this race was delayed approximately five minutes due to Race 1 at Berrigan running late and also as a result of TUZLA (D Pires) and CRESATATE (J Borrett) breaking through the front of their barrier gates.  Both horses were restrained by their riders, proceeded to behind the barrier gates where they were inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who passed them fit to race.  It was further delayed when JONES (S Gates) reared in its barrier stall.  JONES was removed and the saddle was removed from this horse as it was thought that the saddle may have sustained damage in the incident.  After the saddle was inspected by barrier staff, the horse was withdrawn at 3.12 pm by order of Stewards as it was established that the saddle was in fact damaged.  Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on JONES (8/1) prior to 3.12 pm to be refunded in full.  All bets made prior to 3.12 pm to be paid less ten cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and ten cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket.

AERIAL PURSUIT (S Snell) was a little slow to begin.

TWIN TUB (S Maskiell) had a tendency to over-race in the early stages.

TWIN TUB (S Maskiell) elected for a tight run to the inside of MATSONATION (T Atkin) shortly after straightening, was unable to establish himself in the run and as a result was held up for a clear run from approximately the 150 metre mark to the finish.

AERIAL PURSUIT (S Snell) was held up for a clear run over the concluding stages of the event.

It was noted that TUZLA (D Pires) cast its near hind shoe in running.

A post-race swab sample was taken from the winner of the race CRESATATE (Trainer Allan Stubbs).

RACE 7 - SIR TRISTRAM TROPHY - 3-Y-O - NO CLAIMS 2100 METRES  -  11 RUNNERS

Random pre-race blood samples were taken from the following horses:

                     BRAINPOWER                       (Trainer T Young)

         WIKKI WAWA                       (Trainer Gary White)

                     CELTIC FLING                       (Trainer Bill Ryan)

CRYSTAL QUI                       (Trainer W McShane)

THE DEVIL’S TATOO           (Trainer David Brunton)

The start of this race was delayed approximately eight minutes due to the delay experienced in the previous event and also due to a number of horses proving fractious whilst being loaded into their barrier stalls during which CELTIC FLING (D Pires) broke through the front of its barrier gate.  CELTIC FLING was quickly restrained by its rider and was returned to behind the barrier stalls where it was re-loaded.  Shortly thereafter, HARPIST (L Goodrick) lashed out badly in its barrier stall, then broke through the front and had to be caught by the Clerk of the Course.  HARPIST was returned to behind the barrier gates, inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to take its place with the field.

WIKKI WAWA (C Kingston) jumped awkwardly and inwards at the start.  At the same time, US INDIAN GIVERS (R Bradley) jumped awkwardly and outwards at the start.  As a result, WIKKI WAWA (C Kingston) contacted with CELTIC FLING (D Pires) who was taken in onto SOVEREIGN CLAUSE (S Maskiell).  Shortly thereafter US INDIAN GIVERS (R Bradley) continued to shift ground outwards resulting in SQUANDERMANIA (P Michaelides) losing its position.  US INDIAN GIVERS then continued to shift ground outwards and contacted with CRYSTAL QUI (S Snell) who in turn made contact with SOVEREIGN CLAUSE (S Maskiell).  As a result of these incidents, CRYSTAL QUI, SOVEREIGN CLAUSE and CELTIC FLING all became crowded for galloping room and SOVEREIGN CLAUSE and SQUANDERMANIA lost their running positions.

Thereafter US INDIAN GIVERS (R Bradley) threw its head up and raced fiercely in the early and middle stages of the event.

CELTIC FLING (D Pires) and THE DEVIL’S TATTOO (K Bandy) had a tendency to over-race in the early and middle stages.

Approaching the 1000 metre mark, US INDIAN GIVERS (R Bradley) threw its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance then dropped back in the field.  As a result, SOVEREIGN CLAUSE (S Maskiell) who was racing immediately behind this horse, clipped its heels and blundered.  As a result CRYSTAL QUI (S Snell) who was following also had to be restrained by its rider.

CRYSTAL QUI (S Snell) had to switch to the inside of GORDON HIGHLANDER (G Millard) at about the 150 metre mark to obtain clear running.

When questioned regarding US INDIAN GIVERS’ racing manners, Jockey R Bradley stated that the horse raced wayward throughout the entire event and in her opinion, the horse may have resented the tongue control bit fitted to this horse for the first time today.  Trainer Royston Carr, when questioned and after viewing the video of the race, conceded that the horse raced wayward and added that it is his intention to spell this horse for three to four months.  Notwithstanding this fact, Stewards advised Mr Carr that US INDIAN GIVERS is to trial satisfactorily prior to being entered for its next race start.

A post-race veterinary inspection of US INDIAN GIVERS (Trainer Royston Carr) revealed a laceration above the right hock.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SOVERIGN CLAUSE (Trainer Leon Wells) revealed a small cut to the near fore cannon.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race WIKKI WAWA (Trainer Gary White).

RACE  8 - AAMI HOBART CUP ON 9th FEBRUARY 2004 3-Y-O CLASS 6 HANDICAP - 1400 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed approximately one minute due to the delays experienced earlier.

Approaching the 600 metre mark, FINE OMENS (R Maloney A) shifted out slightly.  At the same time, GALVANIZED (D Pires) who was racing a little ungenerously, got its head up and shifted in slightly, resulting in these two horses making contact.  As a result FINE OMENS had to be restrained by its rider and lost its running position.

Jockey S Maskiell, the rider of GENUINE BLONDE, was issued with a reprimand (AR-137(a) careless riding) in that whilst rounding the home turn, he shifted in marginally and momentarily tightened FINE OMENS (R Maloney A) to his inside who had to be restrained and shifted out and lost its running position.  In coming to this decision, Stewards took into account the degree of carelessness on Jockey Maskiell’s part.

A post-race veterinary inspection of FINE OMENS (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 9 -  CADBURY TASMANIAN DERBY DAY ON 7th FEBRUARY 2004 CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES  -  14 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed slightly when LADONIS (D Parish) broke through the front of its barrier gate.  LADONIS was quickly restrained by its rider and was returned to behind the barrier stalls where it was re-loaded.

MASTER SONAR (K Bandy) became crowded between DEVON’S BOY (C Kingston) and TSAR WARRIOR (R Maloney A) rounding the turn at approximately the 1200 metre mark and had to be restrained by its rider. An inquiry into this incident was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE (S Maskiell) shifted in abruptly over the concluding stages and crowded SHIMOUSE (S Snell) to its inside for a number of strides.  Jockey Maskiell put both hands on the reins and straighten immediately.

A post-race veterinary inspection of UNDERGROUND (Trainer Gary White) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MAN IN BLACK (Trainer Chris Crook) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of LADONIS (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
