The Oakbank Racing Club has received 310 nominations for it's two-day Easter Carnival, on April 19 and 21.

The solid nomination for the jumping events - the $150,000 Carlton Draught Greats Eastern Steeplechase, the $94,500 Von Doussa Steeplechase, the $94,500 Yalumba Classic Hurdle and the $30,500 Ord Minnett Sharebrokers Hurdle - has been more than matched by the depth of entry for the 12 flat races.

The $62,200 Clipsal Stakes (1100m) has drawn 17 entries. Adelaide speedster Identifiable will be out to stretch a six-win sequence in the time-honoured sprint but will meet strong resistance from talented SA gallopers including Wyndam Glory and interstate visitors Speaker and Real Dragon.

Imported stallion Sandmason, a Group II winner in England, is among notable entrants for the $62,200 Adelaide Bank Onkaparinga Cup (2150m).

Premier South Australian trainer Tony McEvoy has 32 nominations across the 16 races scheduled to be run at Oakbank. Former leading Adelaide trainer John Hawkes, now in control of the Ingham brothers national operations across four states, has two nominations.

Victorian stables have nominated more than 30 horses for the race meeting regarded as an Adelaide institution.

Crafty Dancer, the exciting jumper who won last year's Grand National and Australian Steeplechases, returns to Oakbank to avenge his second-placing behind Nautilism in last year's Von Doussa.

He will spearhead trainer John Wheeler's assault on the Great Eastern Steeplechase, a race the master Kiwi conditioner has won six times.

Past winner Turkey Lane, triumphant in the 1998 Great Eastern, is the only previous winner looking to add the race to his list of credits for a second time.

Roseworthy trainer David Halliday, who saddled up 2000 winner Bruskin, will be back to lift the prize again. He has in-form jumper Raquets primed for victory.

Top Melbourne hurdler Specular was not among the entries for this year's Oakbank Easter Carnival in South Australia when they closed at 12 noon today.

Specular's trainer Tony Rosolini had been tossing up whether to run the gelding at the famous hills course but was concerned the unique atmosphere and huge crowd on both sides of the track may be his undoing.

News of Specular's absence from race is a great boost to those who entered runners for the $94,400 Yalumba Classic Hurdle (3600m) on Easter Monday.

Among the early entries for that race include Bubble Gum, Saturday's Adelaide hurdle winner Comely King, proven Musgrove jumpers Risky Venture and Super Cobra and yesterday's Strathalbyn flat winner Crowned Serdar.

Crowned Serdar will be out to emulate his bonny jumping stablemate Shutayr, the star of last year's Oakbank carnival by winning jumps events on both days of the carnival including the Yalumba Classic.

Meanwhile, fourteen entries were received for the weekend's feature, the time honoured $156,000 Carlton Draught Great Eastern Steeplechase (4950m).

Among those nominations are the good jumpers Crafty Dancer, Crown Duo, Raquets, Shamrock Dancer, The Rampager and previous Great Eastern winner Turkey Lane.

The feature flat races over the carnival have been swamped by quality entries.

The $62,600 Adelaide Bank Onkaparinga Cup (2150m) has brought together the likes of Bellton, Buffalo Power, Duchovny, Glitzy Guru, McBeal, Our Guided Missile, Sandmason, Talanto, Terminus Prince, Sunday's Gawler Cup winner Unbridled Lad and last year's winner Oxford Dollar.

Saturday's feature flat event, the $62,200 has brought together 16 entries - all quality. Among them are the flying Identifiable (six straight wins), recent Melbourne winner Danzerani, proven sprinters Let's Went, Heracles, Lowendale Road, recent stakes winner Wyndam Glory and the top interstaters Real Dragon and Speaker.

Late entries for both race days will be accepted until tomorrow with officials. For more information contact TRSA.

Who's Been Going to Oakbank the Longest?

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/28170--sp-818746197.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=The article in today's Advertiser by Stuart Innis regarding campers at Oakbank and in particular Ron Nettleton who is attending... size=small}
The article in today's Advertiser by Stuart Innis regarding campers at Oakbank and in particular Ron Nettleton who is attending his 43rd Carnival has resulted in several telephone calls from Oakbank enthusiasts contacting the Club's office advising of how many Carnivals they have attended.

Merv Renshaw, a gate supervisor, will be attending his 57th Carnival this year. Merv travelled to his first Oakbank Carnival in 1947 on the then Goodwood Railway Station to Oakbank train.

The first train to leave Goodwood on Easter Saturday and Monday at 5am contained the casual staff at the front of the train and the horses and horse handlers at the rear. Several other trains followed bringing patrons to the event. At the end of the day the staff, horse and horse handler's train was the last train back to Goodwood arriving at 10pm, certainly a long day by anybody's standards.

Merv now travels to and from Oakbank in his motor car but still leaves his home in Adelaide at 6am and returns at 5pm, which are considered much more respectable hours.

The next call to be received was from Maurice Klemich who attended his first meeting in 1944 following the racing ban in 1942 and 1943 through World War II.

Maurice has subsequently attended every Oakbank Carnival since which makes 2003 his 60th attendance. For the last ten years Maurice has presented to the winning jockey of the Great Eastern Steeplechase a set of Waterford Crystal Glasses.

Maurice sums up Oakbank in one word and that is "tradition". When his grandchildren attended their first Oakbank Carnival in 1998 they were the fourth generation of his family to enjoy Oakbank.

The next call the office received was from member Darryl Koch to advise that his mother Nellie Koch who lives at Plympton Park will be attending her 57th consecutive Oakbank this year. Nellie, who is 86 years of age, commenced attending Oakbank with her parents at age 8 and has only missed 3 Oakbank's since then.

With the first of the Oakbank Trails to be conducted next Monday (14th April) the Advertiser article is bound to bring to light further instances of people and their attendance records. Undoubtedly, Maurice's 60 years will certainly be put to the test.

Lindsay Park trainer Tony McEvoy and "boss" David Hayes had another successful weekend at the track with both talented horsemen recording multiple winners.

McEvoy scored an interstate metropolitan on double courtesy of former talented Perth galloper Lady Knockout at Caulfield in Melbourne and Brandy Cruster who lead throughout to win at Cheltenham in Adelaide.

Yesterday the winning run of the current Adelaide and Melbourne premiership leader continued at Gawler with two winners from limited runners.

After enjoying a lovely run throughout the race the son of Unbridled's Song swept to the lead at the top of the short straight and set up a winning break for in form rider Paul Gatt.

Earlier in the afternoon the well bred two-year-old Silverstein (Rory's Jester-Sisterhood) proved too strong in the race for juveniles.

The stable picked up the feature event of the afternoon, the Gawler Cup courtesy of the flashy grey galloper Unbridled Lad, who was having his first start at the distance.

RACE 3 - MORPHETTVILLE JUNCTION WINNING POST SPORTS BAR HANDICAP 1460m

When questioned, J Holder the rider of LI LO LILL explained that in assessing the race with trainer Mr L Macdonald, it had been agreed to ride the filly forward as in their opinion the race lacked an obvious leader. J Holder stated as LI LO LILL had begun very well, and because it was racing in blinkers again, he had elected to lead rather than risk the filly over-

racing. He added, he was surprised at the pressure applied mid race by JADE STAR (H McKechnie) and felt that as a result, his mount had been made to carry its full weight. Mr L Macdonald the trainer of LI LO LILL confirmed his instructions.

When questioning her riding of JADE STAR from the 800 metres to the entrance of the straight, H McKechnie explained that she had been instructed to ride her mount in a similar manner to the mare’s previous start when successful at Edenhope. H McKechnie was advised her explanation would be recorded.
