1005northerly.jpg (13965 bytes)Champion galloper Northerly is likely to run in both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate after he scored another top class win in this afternoon’s Group Two $351,500 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

Displaying his usual fighting qualities the son of Serheed hit the front at the top of the famous Flemington straight and then was able to hold out the determined challenge of the Rick Hore-Lacy trained Dash for Cash to win the time honoured Group Two event by a half neck.

Winning trainer Fred Kersley was telling the same story after his gelding scored his third consecutive win this afternoon.

"He is just able to find enough to win," Kersley said. "He’s something pretty special."

Kersley suggested the Caulfield Cup will be Northerly’s next run and a run in the Cox Plate after that was yet to be decided.

1005northerly2.jpg (12724 bytes)"We will just take one race at a time for now," he said.

After jumping out of the gates in good style Northerly settled just behind the leader Leica Guv in the early stages and worked up to the girth of that horse at the 1000 metre mark. Shortly after straightening the gelding poked his nose in front and from that point he was never headed.

Rick Hore-Lacy, the trainer of the runner-up Dash for Cash, was delighted with the effort of his grey galloper.

"Couldn’t have been any happier with the run," he reported. "We were beaten by a champion."

1005northerly3.jpg (12315 bytes)"He (Dash for Cash) is going to go onto the Caulfield Cup and at that track he will be able to position himself in a good position."

"The 100/1 I got each way on him for the race (Caulfield Cup) is looking good now," he said with a wry smile.

Tony McEvoy the trainer of the third placegetter Fields of Omagh was thrilled with the performance of his gelding, who got back after an eventful start.

"He slipped as he came of the gates and got back much further than we had originally planned," McEvoy said. "It was a super run."

On a sad note the Cup dreams of Roger James were thwarted when his Group One winning mare Sixty Seconds finished last of the fifteen and was then subsequently found to have bled. She has incurred the usual three month ban.

Her trainer Roger James indicated connections had decided to retire the mare and she will be sent to be mated in Europe for next year.

Coupe Hangs On to Take Edward Manifold

1005coupe.jpg (11885 bytes)Coupe has thrown more mystery into the Group One Thousand Guineas at Caulfield after a thrilling win in today’s Group Two $201,500 Blazer Edward Manifold Stakes (1620m) at Flemington.

Despite starting as one of the outsiders Coupe ($26-$31) defied a late challenge from Fuji Dancer and the race favourite Lashed ($2.60-$3.50) to win in a thrilling three way finish.

After taking over the lead at the top of the straight the Mathew Ellerton trained filly then had to fight strongly to hold on in a deceiving finish.

The margin on the line was mere short half head and Ellerton confessed after the race he was uncertain as to whether his representative had in fact hung on.

1005coupe2.jpg (11963 bytes)"I wasn’t really sure," he reported.

On the other hand Kerrin McEvoy, who was aboard the David Racovolis trained Fuji Dancer, thought he may have arrived just in time.

"On the line I thought I might have got up," McEvoy said. "But unfortunately we didn’t."

Coupe, who is owned by well known Victorian owners and breeders David and Helen Hains of Kingston Town fame, is on track for a Group One start after today’s Group Two triumph.

"We’ll push on now to the Guineas and hopefully after that we might be able to look at the Wakeful (Stakes)," Ellerton said.

1005coupertosc.jpg (14737 bytes)Although he did add that he may look toward the Derby with the youngster Ellerton did confess he felt Coupe might not be as effective over trips longer than 1600 metres.

Lashed lost few admirers with her close up third which impressed her rider today Damien Oliver.

"It was a very good run," Oliver said. "The pace in the race didn't really suit her but she still managed to be right there at the finish."

The disappointing effort of the race was turned in the by Michael Moroney's Queensland stakes winning filly Tequila Knowledge. She failed to beat a runner home, nearly 17 lengths from the winner.

r9sking.jpg (9631 bytes)The Zabeel entire Don Eduardo (NZ) has a new rider for Saturday’s $A350,000, Turnbull Stakes over the 2000m of Flemington’s turf.

Steven King has taken over from Don Eduardo’s previous rider Damien Oliver who has defected to the Tony McEvoy trained Fields Of Omagh.

Fields Of Omagh won the John F Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley at his last start over Magical Miss and Le Zagaletta, while Don Eduardo was a promising third in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield. After that run trainer Lee Freedman said that four-year-old Don Eduardo (ex Diamond Lover) was coming back to his three-year-old form, which finished on the highlight of a win in the AJC Derby at Randwick.

The extra distance of The Turnbull, 200m more than the 1800m of the Underwood, will suit Don Eduardo. The horse’s owner, Eduardo Cojuangco, has the 2400m of the Hong Kong Vase in December in his sights, as well as a possible tilt at the Dubai World Cup meeting next year.

Both Don Eduardo and Fields Of Omagh face the Bart Cummings trained Magical Miss on Saturday. The Danehill mare possibliy preparing for a Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup double like the Cummings trained Saintly.

Greg Childs, rider of “Magic Bird”  which performed poorly, stated that when put under pressure from the 600 metres, “Magic Bird” gave ground quickly and as he believed that something was amiss with the horse he eased it down over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Brett Prebble rider of “Cousy” stated that although he drew barrier one he elected to race off the fence throughout as “Cousy” does not appreciate racing inside or amongst horses. Prebble added that “Cousy” then gave ground over the concluding stages.

Approaching the 300 metres “Lord Volksraad” shifted in abruptly and then had to be checked off the heels of “Frightening”. “Lord Volksraad” then had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

Race 4 – SCALZO FOOD INDUSTRIES HANDICAP - 1420 metres:

As the gates were released “Pure Theatre” threw its head in the air and struck D. Oliver in the face. This resulted in “Pure Theatre” losing ground and D Oliver being inconvenienced in the early stages of the race. “Sophistocat” knuckled on jumping away. “Flavour” shifted in on jumping away and tightened “Karamazou” onto “Sophistocat”.

“Karamazou” was unable to obtain a clear run for the majority of the straight. “Prince Rubiton” brushed “Flavour” when trying to obtain a narrow run between that gelding and “Palace Chief” passing the 200 metres. At the home turn “Vitelli” shifted out to improve its position and brushed “Little Dozer” unbalancing that gelding.

Race 5 – BLAZER EDWARD MANIFOLD STAKES - 1620 metres:

Running to the 1400 metres “Scent of Romance” had to be checked severely when tightened for room between “Milanova” which was taken out by “Nul Autre” which when laying out shifted out and “La Bella Dame” which shifted in abruptly away from “Make me Strong” when that filly shifted in. “Ribe” which was racing on the outside of “Scent of Romance’s” heels was severely hampered and after taking into account all the circumstances and as no one rider was responsible the Stewards took no action.

Near the 1300 metres, “Milanova” who had been steadied off the heels of “Nul Autre”, shifted in and tightened “It’s Who Deanie”.  “It’s Who Deanie” then shifted out and forced “Nul Autre” onto “Make Me Strong” resulting in both those horses being hampered and “La Bella Dame” and “Ribe” who were following were also badly hampered.

On the home turn “Scent of Romance” had to be checked for some distance off the heels of “It’s Who Deanie”. Also on the home turn   “La Bella Dame” and “Tarcoola Diamond” came together. Shortly after the start “Helene Vitality” and Rain Gauge were hampered when tightened for room between Pentastic and Maguire who shifted in to avoid the heels of Dash for Cash after Dash for Cash had shifted in  and steadied. Shortly after this incident Dash for Cash got its head up and shifted in abruptly when being eased. Maguire also shifted in resulting in Rain Gauge having to be checked off the heels of Pentastic. The Stewards will notify Malcolm Pay to exercise far greater caution in these circumstances in the future.

Damien Oliver rider of Fields of Omagh stated that when questioned that having been so far out of its ground in the early and middle stages of the race stated that shortly after the start when Fields of Omagh brushed the hindquarters of Henderson Bay the gelding lost its footing and became unbalanced which resulted in him being further out of his ground than he would have desired and as a result of this incident he then elected to ease to the tail of the field rather than be caught wide in the early and middle stages of the race. Oliver added that he remained in that position and elected to attempt to improve his position rounding the home turn through the field from the top of the straight as he believed that it would not be in the best interests had he improved around the outside at that stage.

Race 7 – JAYCO STAKES - 1420 metres:

Approaching the 200 metres “Hosannah” shifted out when making ground and brushed “Faiza”. Throughout the race “Zabeel’s Angel (NZ)” hung out. Race 8 – GILGAI STAKES - 1200 metres:

“Belle De Jour” knuckled on jumping away. “El Nino” and “Off to Sea” came together. “Strategic Image” was held up for a run approaching and passing the 200 metres and again when attempting to obtain a narrow run between Ruitano and Sports. He then had to be eased off the heels of El Nino. La Zagaletta which was racing tight on the outside of “Lewinsky” also had trouble obtaining a clear run passing the 200 metres. “Golden Delicious” laid in under pressure over the concluding stages..

Simon Marshall rider of “Assertive Lad” stated that the gelding travelled well early but was reluctant to race from the 600 metres when put under pressure and gave ground from that point. Marshall added that the horse felt normal on pulling up.

Expensive yearling purchase El Capitan has won his third consecutive race and has earned a crack at better class after scoring a fast finishing win in the Qantas 3yo Flying (1000m) at Moonee Valley tonight.

A regally bred son of the champion sire Danehill, El Capitan stalked the leaders back on the inside throughout before being switched off their heels and then scoring a good win.

El Capitan was sold for $675,000 at last year's William Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and is now owned by Coolmore's Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor.

Trained at Caulfield by Lee Freedman, El Capitan is out of Oh So Canny a Sir Tristram daughter of the Group One winner Canny Lass, who is turn is a full sister to the fellow Group One winner Canny Lad.

At the post El Capitan did enough to down the Tommy Hughes trained Gold Express, while Cooke Street made up some good late ground to grab third ahead of the early leader Judanzo.

One of the other more fancied runners, the Nick Moraitis owned Intuition, had a terrible run in transit and as expected weakened over the final stages to finish in eighth place.

1005sixtyseconds.jpg (13058 bytes)One of the leading Caulfield and Melbourne Cup hopefuls Sixty Seconds is out of contention for the spring features after suffering a bleeding attack at Flemington today.

The well bred mare was found to have bled from both nostrils after she finished an uncharacteristic last in the field of fifteen.

Trained in New Zealand by Roger James, Sixty Seconds was regarded by many good judges as a leading Cups chance over the next couple of months.

Roger James said after the race that the mare had pleased him in the way she had returned this time in and her build up to the Caulfield Cup.

"She was ticking along really well," he said. "So it's a great pity, but it could have been worse - at least we still have her."

1005sixtyseconds2.jpg (12358 bytes)James said the European based owners of the mare had decided she would be immediately retired.

"She will probably be served next year to Northern Hemisphere time in Europe," James added.

She was quoted with leading Melbourne bookmaker Michael Eskander as a $12 chance for the Caulfield Cup before today’s event.

From eleven starts before today Sixty Seconds registered four wins, one second and two thirds for stakes earnings of $376,181.

After viewing the videos, M Evans did not proceed with this request and correct weight was declared. After being placed in its barrier stall Beauquest reared and dislodged its rider, D Yendall. Beauquest was removed from the barrier and examined by the clubs veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run. D Yendall was examined by the clubs medical officer and passed fit to ride. As a result of this incident the start of the race was delayed. Near the 900m Dolphinora had to be checked and Patience Darling hampered, when tightened for room by Full Boar (L Meech), which shifted in when not clear. L Meech was severely reprimanded and notified to exercise far greater care when shifting ground in the future. Approaching the home turn Methodical Boy had to be eased to avoid the heels of Beauquest, which when weakening, shifted out slightly. D Yendall, rider of Beauquest, who performed poorly, explained to stewards that he could not offer an explanation for the gelding's poor performance. A subsequent veterinary examination of Beauquest failed to reveal any abnormality. Rounding the home turn Red Tamari had a tendency to hang out.

Race 9 - Horsham Hire Class 3 Handicap 2050 metres:

After passing the winning post the first time It's Over Art, when over-racing, had to be checked to avoid the heels of Very Quiet. It's Over Art then continued to over-race, and near the 1400m had to be eased across the heels of Very Quiet.

Hydrometer Impresses in Derby Trial

1005hydrometer.jpg (13176 bytes)Classy Adelaide galloper Hydrometer burst into VRC Derby calculations when he downed the hot favourite Lord Volksraad in impressive fashion to win the Listed $101,000 Concept Sport Stakes (1420m) at Flemington today.

Trained by Leon Macdonald, Hydrometer made up for his narrow defeat at Sandown last weekend when he veered to the outside fence and was beaten by only a long neck.

Macdonald’s Melbourne foreman Andrew Noblet said the son of Geiger Counter would head to the Group Two Norman Robinson Stakes before his ultimate aim in the Victoria Derby back at Flemington next month.

1005hydrometer2.jpg (14383 bytes)"He’s a lovely horse," Noblet said after the win. "He deserves everything he gets as he is beautiful to work with and he has a great deal of ability."

Ridden beautifully by record breaking jockey Damien Oliver, the son of Geiger Counter was able to shoot to the front after entering the home straight against the rails and then hold out a strong challenge from the previously unbeaten Brian Mayfield-Smith trained Lord Volksraad.

"He actually reminded me a lot of Umrum," Oliver said. "He positioned himself in the box seat so easily."

The stable could have two runners in the Group One Derby if the talented recent Caulfield Guineas Prelude winner Great Glen comes through next weekend’s Group One Guineas in good style.

1005hydrortosc.jpg (12179 bytes)"Kerrin McEvoy will ride him (Great Glen) in the Guineas and he is a chance of heading on to the Derby if he runs well next week."

At the post the South Australian bred colt had three quarters of a length to spare over Lord Volksraad, while the Last Tycoon colt Tycoon Ruler worked home solidly for third, a further length back.

The highly rated Hong Kong galloper Able Choice disappointed at his final Caulfield Guineas lead up, finishing eight lengths from the winner in seventh place after racing up on the pace during the early and middle stages.
