Girl to Down the Boys in Ascot Vale

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/21121--sp-1529758384.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/quentin/images/0824innovationgirl.jpg desc=Brilliant Melbourne filly Innovation Girl can gain some well deserved respect by toppling the males in tomorrow's Group Two Ascot... size=small}
0824innovationgirl.jpg (16305 bytes)Brilliant Melbourne filly Innovation Girl can gain some well deserved respect by toppling the males in tomorrow's Group Two Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington.

The achievements of the brilliant filly have been somewhat overshadowed by the recent awe inspiring efforts of the champion colt Bel Esprit.

But tomorrow Bel Esprit won't be at Flemington, and Innovation Girl gets a great opportunity to steal the spotlight, by winning the Ascot Vale Stakes.

To date the daughter of the brilliant sire Rubiton has raced on seven occasions, for six wins and a narrow second placing in stakes class.

Connections have a big opinion of the star three-year-old, and astute trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith rates her one of the best female gallopers he had trained during a stunning training career.

0906riverinacharm.jpg (15203 bytes)Mayfield-Smith rates Innovation Girl "right up there" with the former brilliant fillies he had saddled to feature wins including the brilliant Riverina Charm.

"She (Riverina Charm) is probably the best (filly) I have trained," Mayfield-Smith said. "But this one (Innovation Girl) is potentially the best."

"To date Innovation Girl has done nothing wrong and she should be unbeaten," he added.

Following her last start win when she was backing up for the second weekend straight, Mayfield-Smith said he was not frightened of the boys.

0817bmayfieldsmith.jpg (11873 bytes)"Bring them on," he said. "I've never been frightened about Bel Esprit or any of them."

With the filly being asked to carry just 53 kilograms on the set weight scale, Kerrin McEvoy was called in to replace Nash Rawiller as the filly's rider.

McEvoy partnered Innovation Girl when she scored a runaway first up win in the Group Three Dermody Stakes in Adelaide late last season.

While adjudged as my special for the afternoon, Innovation Girl is set to get stiff opposition from a handful of runners including the Tommy Hughes trained Titanic Jack and the formerly unbeaten Hong Kong youngster Able Choice.

Meanwhile, Mayfield-Smith will back up Prince Rubiton after he was beaten, but still placed as favourite last Saturday at Caulfield.

And he will be hoping he grabs a feature race treble with progeny of the Blue Gum Farm based Rubiton as he hopes to get the Newmarket Handicap winner Rubitano back in the winner's circle at Flemington.

r3tonymcevoy.jpg (9733 bytes)Tony McEvoy was the leading trainer on Victorian racetracks during August but it was a close call.

McEvoy grabbed the top spot on a countback from Darren Weir who also trained nine winners. It was a huge turnaround for McEvoy who managed just one winner in Victoria during July.

Mark Young was a standout performer registering the top strike/rate of 42.9% with six winners from his fourteen runners.

Bill Mitchell has quickly established himself in Victoria and grabbed a Top 10 spot with six winners for the month.

Race 1 - RODERICK INSURANCE BROKERS THREE-YEARS-OLD COLTS AND GELDINGS MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres:

Near the 800 metres "Ungar" was tightened for room by "Cannydance", which shifted in.

Approaching the 200 metres "Lord Volksraad (NZ)" shifted in and inconvenienced "Boot 'n' Scoot".

Race 2 - BELL PARK SPORT & RECREATION CLUB THREE-YEARS-OLD FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres:

On jumping away "Vivaral" was hampered when tightened for room between "Mam Jesette" and "Rentree", which shifted out.

Also on jumping away "Queen of Swords" was tightened for room between "Starred" and "Mam Jesette", which shifted out.

Near the 1000 metres "American Woman" and "Enniskerry" were tightened for room between "Miss Kate" and "Marmoso", which shifted in away from "Rentree". "Marmoso" then shifted out and inconvenienced "She's a Monty".

Approaching the 800 metres "Enniskerry" was tightened for room between "Miss Kate" and "Marmoso", which initially shifted in and brushed "Enniskerry". The interference was then aggravated due to "Marmoso" being taken in by "Mam Jesette" (D. Short), which shifted in when not sufficiently clear, and as a result "Enniskerry" had to be checked. "American Woman", which was following, was hampered in consequence. After taking into account all the circumstances the Stewards took no action other than to notify D. Short to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

In the straight "Queen of Swords" and "Heart Chaos" hung in.

Rounding the home turn and in the straight until near the 50 metres "American Woman" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.

Race 3 - ARCHIBALD BUILDERS FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE - 1500 metres:

When the gates opened "Waratah Secret" and "Mash Minx" were slow to begin.

Near the 1000 metres "Kapalua Bay", which was over-racing, shifted in to avoid the heels of "Tristad Folie (NZ)", and as a result hampered "Blushing Plume".

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight "Kapalua Bay" was held up and unable to obtain a clear run.

Race 4 - KERR'S NORTHSIDE HIRE PTY. LTD. FILLIES & MARES CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1300 metres:

On jumping away B. Fenech, rider of "Plexus", lost the use of his near-side iron.

Shortly after the start "Ruby Halo" was hampered when tightened for room between "Cristi's Tears" and "Honour her Name" due to both horses shifting ground.

In the straight "Gokyo Rio" had a tendency to lay out under pressure.

Race 5 - UNITED WAY & BUCKLEY'S ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE HANDICAP - 1700 metres:

No report.

Race 6 - DEVINE MAPLESON CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1700 metres:

"Rekoba" was slow to begin.

In the straight "Dantarian" laid in under pressure.

Race 7 - COOPERS COPIERS CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

After being placed in the barriers "Gothic Lord" reared and became temporarily cast. Acting on veterinary advice the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Gothic Lord" at 4.06 p.m.

Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies wagered on "Gothic Lord" be refunded, and that all successful bets on horses prior to the time of withdrawal of "Gothic Lad" be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Five cents; Place Bets: Six cents; Winning Concession Bets: Six cents, and Doubles Bets: Five cents. All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal were ordered to be paid at face value of the ticket.

Acting on a report from the starter regarding the unruly behaviour of "Gothic Lord", Mr. Brian McKnight, trainer of the gelding, was notified that an official warning will be placed on the gelding and that he must produce a barrier test certificate prior to the horse racing again.

L. Robertson, rider of "Tai Chi", stated to the Stewards that after being slow to begin his mount did not travel well in the early stages, and passing the 1000 metres he then had concerns about the mare's action. Robertson added that he rode his mount along for a short distance but, as he believed that there may have been something amiss with it, he eased it down in the straight. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 8 - VICTORY INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 2400 metres:

Rounding the home turn "Ruby Jude" had difficulty in obtaining a clear run.

W. Hokai, rider of "Amalthea" which performed below expectations, stated to the Stewards that the mare over-raced in the early and middle stages of the race, and failed to respond to his riding approaching the home turnand in the straight.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of the following races: "Lord Volksraad (NZ)" - Race 1; "La Quinta Gold" - Race 3; "Riva Storm" - Race 4; "Aussie's Lad" - Race 5, and from "Hit the Spot" - Race 7.

r4lisairwin.jpg (8946 bytes)The Lisa Irwin urine saga from last week continued at Sandown yesterday when she was stripped of her rides by stewards.

Prior to riding of the fifth race stewards on course were advised of the results of Irwin's "concerning" urine sample which was provided at the Kyneton races last Tuesday. The sample was found to have "shown the presence" of a banned substance.

At Kyenton stewards ordered Irwin to provide another sample after they had "concerns" with the sample being genuine, however Irwin did not provide the sample as provided. An inquiry will also be held as to why she did not follow the stewards' directions.

Yesterday at Sandown stewards stood Irwin down from riding both Tin Tan Belle in Race Six and Lady of the Dance in Race Eight.

Inquiries into the saga will be held at a date to be fixed.

Flemington Prepares for a "Mac Attack"

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/5596--sp-1751396340.html layout=standard image=http://www.cyberhorse.net.au/barnes/mop190501/3lilolill.jpg desc=South Australian horses are making an attack on the early spring races with more than a dozen contenders at Flemington... size=small}

r3tonymcevoy.jpg (9733 bytes)South Australian horses are making an attack on the early spring races with more than a dozen contenders at Flemington on Saturday.

And more than half of the raiders are prepared by the two "Macs" – Leon Macdonald and Tony McEvoy.

Macdonald, with 43 boxes at Morphettville and a further 15 at Caulfield, said his stable was overflowing with horses in what could be his best spring.

He has four chances in Saturday’s meeting, beginning with Great Glen in the Listed Drumstick Royale Plate. The promising type is having his first start beyond 1400m but Macdonald has no doubt he will relish the journey.

Last start, Great Glen finished second to Delago Brom over 1200m in the Listed Vain Stakes at Caulfield.

"He overraced slightly last start and I think that was the difference between winning and losing," Macdonald said. "I’ve taken the blinkers off for this run and I think from barrier one he’ll get a lovely run in the box seat. He’ll just bowl along and should enjoy the trip."

0814leonmacdonald.jpg (11859 bytes)Great Glen, a winner of the Group 2 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville earlier in the year, will have his next start over 1400m in the Group 3 Guineas Prelude at Caulfield on September 22 before the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in October. From there, he could even run in the AAMI Vase and the VRC Derby.

"He’s a high-class horse and I think the reason good horses get ground is because they do it easily," Macdonald said. "It all depends on his lead-up form to those races but I think he’ll measure up."

Next up for Macdonald is burly grey Eagle Rhythm in the Listed TEAC Stakes (1400m), who returned to racing with a solid three-length seventh to El Nino first-up over 1200m at Caulfield. He has an excellent record at the track and is on track for a Caulfield Cup campaign.

"He ran a terrific race first-up and I’m happy with the way he’s come through the run," Macdonald said. "He might find this a bit short, though. The next logical step is the Underwood Stakes (1800m) a fortnight later but he’s headed toward the Caulfield Cup - as long as he measures up. He’s been a slow maturing type and he might just be ready to show his best. He’s bred along very similar lines to Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal (Rhythm – Sir Tristram mare)."

3lilolill.jpg (12577 bytes)

Later in the day, Macdonald will saddle up consistent mare Li Lo Lill in the Listed Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m). She, too, is being targeted at the Caulfield Cup. First-up, the mare finished well back behind Pernod in the Dunlop Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

"She was just run off her legs first-up and was never able to get into the race," Macdonald said. "Obviously she’ll get better with more ground and at least we know she can stay. I’m aiming her at the Caulfield Cup but she’s another one who has to measure up first. There are a number of mares’ races over the carnival plus races like the Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo Cups. There’s plenty around for her."

Stablemate Little Miss Quick is an emergency for the same race, and has earned a trip to the Melbourne stables courtesy of her excellent Adelaide form.

"She’s very honest and will eventually make a nice staying type," Macdonald said. "I’ve just brought her over to see what we can do with her in the spring but I think she’ll be a better horse in the autumn."

Honest mare Shaye Spice is ticking along nicely, according to Macdonald, in preparation for next weekend’s Group 1 Manikato Stakes, and the stable will receive another boost in the few weeks with multiple Group 1 winner Umrum and the promising Hydrometer joining the Melbourne team.

Those two horses had an exhibition gallop between races at Morphettville on Wednesday in a solid half-mile workout. Umrum, now eight, looked magnificent and will begin his campaign in the Group 3 Blackwell Funeral Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday week.

r7elegantfashion.jpg (11345 bytes)Tony McEvoy has six runners entered for the Flemington meeting, including Elegant Fashion in the Group 2 Craiglee Stakes, where he will go head-to-head with his boss, David Hayes, who is having his first Australian runner in seven years – Helene Vitality.

McEvoy’s other runners are Presumed Innocent and the impeccably bred Dubai Ice in the first event, last-start winner El Nino in the TEAC Stakes, and Court Of Jewels and Soldado in the final event.

Other South Australian runners are Olongopo for Bill Peake, Squillani for Philip Stokes and Savage Attack for Mark Minervini – all three last-start winners.

A number of horses who won feature races over the Adelaide Cup carnival are also engaged - Australasian Oaks winner Tully Thunder, Veuve Clicquot Stakes winner Silver Baron, SA Derby winner Pantani, Rain Lover Plate winner Yammer, The Jansz winner Rohatyn, Wylie Handicap winner Innovation Girl and Carlton Draught Stakes winner Firetaine all make up what looks an exciting days racing.

PICS: Li Lo Lill (Jenny Barnes). Tony McEvoy and Elegant Fashion (Quentin Lang).

r4noelcallow.jpg (12551 bytes)Noel Callow was back in familiar territory as the leading jockey on Victorian racetracks for the month of August.

Callow averaged a winner every four rides and finished three wins clear of July's leader, Nash Rawiller. Callow last topped the list in May.

A newcomer to the list was the highly promising Brady Cross who notched an impressive eleven winners to finish in 5th spot. One of those winners (at Tatura on August 5th) came on his 16th birthday.

Former leading apprentice Vincent Hall has made a successful transition to senior ranks and finished 3rd on the list with the highest strike/rate of the jockeys in the Top 20.

The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that he could find no abnormality with the gelding after the race. The Stewards notified Carol Faithfull, trainer of "Montana Magic", that the horse was suspended from jumps racing for 1 month and until such time as the gelding performs to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official jumping trial.

When passing the 600 metres the first time "Masterful Lad (NZ)" hung out and hampered "Biscany" and "Kevie's Luck"..

When approaching the last steeple near the 200 metres "Masterful Lad (NZ)", which was laying in, shifted in and ran off the steeple, crashing through the inside wing. After interviewing Jonathan Bowles, rider of "Masterful Lad (NZ)", and Mr. J. J. Houlahan, trainer, the Stewards notified Mr. Houlahan that prior to Masterful Lad starting in a steeple race again it must trial to the Stewards satisfaction in an organised steeple school.

During the race "Kevie's Luck" sustained a wound to the near hind leg.

Near the 700 metres "Scarville" was eased off the heels of "Wingfield", which shifted out slightly. "Hail Rancho", which was following, was then checked in consequence.

Shortly after straightening "Barnum:" had to be eased to avoid the heels of "Carnegie Bay (NZ)" (B. White), which shifted out. B. White was reprimanded, and notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

Near the 800 metres the first time "Le Thief" was tightened on to the running rail by "Just a Look (NZ)", which was taken in by "Bubbl;e Gum" (Andrea Beveridge) which, when over-racing, initially shifted in. The tightening was aggravated when "Woody Woodpecker (NZ)" (B. Scott) then shifted in and tightened "Bubble Gum" on to "Just a Look (NZ)" and "Le Thief". After taking into account all the circumstances the Stewards reprimanded Andrea Beveridge, and notified her to exercise more care. B. Scott was severely reprimanded and notified that he must ensure that he is clear of other runners at all times.

B. Scott, rider of "Woody Woodpecker (NZ)", was severely reprimanded for permitting his horse to shift in near the 800 metres on the second occasion when not sufficiently clear of "Bubble Gum", which resulted in "Bubble Gum" being tightened for room and having to be eased.

Race 2 - GREY BOOTS HANDICAP - 1500 metres:

No report.

Race 3 - DENISE'S JOY SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

Race 4 - HYMETTUS SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

"Royal Rule" jumped away awkwardly, and shortly after the start was tightened for room between "Classicus" and "Noble Start" when both horses shifted ground.

Approaching the 200 metres "Actuary" shifted out across the heels of "Unbridled Smile".

"Tomakomai" raced greenly, and shifted ground from the 200 metres.

Approaching the winning post "Mythological", which was laying in, had to be eased off the heels of "Tomakomai", which shifted out slightly.

D. Gauci, rider of "Royal Rule", explained that after being tightened for room slightly after the start, "Royal Rule" did not stretch out in the early and middle stages of the race, and he believed that something may have been amiss with it as it did not feel right in its action throughout the race. A veterinary examination of "Royal Rule" failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 5 - FUTURE HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

"Regal Shot", which had been restless in its stall, jumped away awkwardly, threw its head in the air, shifted in, and bumped "Star Bidder", resulting in both those horses losing considerable ground.

For some distance approaching and passing the 800 metres "Berezny" raced tight on the inside of "Redclay" which, in turn, was racing close to the heels of "Mr. Murphy".

V. Duric, rider of "Berezny" which performed below expectations, stated that the horse did not appreciate racing on the inside of other runners running down the hill, and then gave ground in the run home. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

Near the 700 metres "Redclay", which was racing close to the heels of "Mr. Murphy", had to be checked off the heels of "Mr. Murphy" when taken out slightly by "Berezny".

Rounding the home turn "Mr. Lofty (NZ)", when unable to obtain a clear run and when making ground in the straight, had to shift out to avoid the heels of "Berezny" to obtain a clear run after passing the 200 metres. "Mr. Lofty (NZ)", which continued to make ground, then had to be steadied off the heels of "Mr. Murphy" near the 100 metres.

Race 6 - T. R. TREVASKIS HANDICAP - 1300 metres: Acting on a confirmed telephone call from Mr. Grant Dalziel, trainer of "Rory's Jane", who stated that the mare was unfit to run, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Rory's Jane" at 8.15 a.m. A veterinary certificate has been produced for "Rory's Jane".

Acting on a report from the analyst, which was received subsequent to the running of Race 5, indicating that the preliminary analysis of a urine sample provided by Lisa Irwin on Tuesday, 27th August, had shown the presence of a substance banned by AR.81B, the Stewards stood Lisa Irwin down from fulfilling her engagements today. Lisa Irwin provided the urine sample following a direction given to her on Monday, 26th August, at the Hamilton racecourse. G. Childs was substituted as the rider of "Tin Tan Belle".

"Granniah" knuckled on jumping away.

Near the 1000 metres "Midday Matinee" threw its head in the air when being eased off the heels of "Eulalie".

Near the 900 metres "Skyworth", which had a tendency to over-race, clipped the heels of "Blues Explosion", and almost fell.

Rounding the home turn "Embraceable You (NZ)" had difficulty obtaining a clear run before switching to the outside at the entrance to the straight.

"Venus was her Name" had difficulty obtaining a clear run in the straight, and near the 100 metres had to be eased off the heels of "Midday Matinee", which shifted in.

Race 7 - MAPLE HANDICAP - 2237 metres: Turning out of the straight "Anyone we Know (NZ)" had to be checked off the heels of "Biggs (NZ)" (N. Rawiller), which shifted in. N. Rawiller was notified to ensure that he is clear of other runners when shifting ground.

"Bold Impulse", which weakened badly from the home turn, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon who reported that the gelding was showing signs of distress subsequent to the race.

Race 8 - ANALIGHT HANDICAP - 2137 metres: Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight "Let's Remember" was held up when unable to obtain a clear run.

Craig Newitt, rider of 'Best Intentions" which performed poorly, stated that the mare was reluctant to race when put under pressure from the home turn, and gave ground in the straight. Newitt added that "Best Intentions" appeared normal on pulling up. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of all races today.

EXPLANATIONS: Fabian Alesci was notified as the rider of "Pagola" in accordance with the Rules. (Race 2)
