Injury plagued gelding De Gaulle Lane will miss his second consecutive spring carnival after damaging a ligament.

The runaway Queensland Derby winner had his first run at Caulfield last weekend and had pulled up well from that run according to his Cranbourne based trainer Colin Alderson.

However connections learned of the bad news when his latest problem was resolved in the past 24 hours.

Alderson reported that there is "no major damage", but added that if the son of The Commander would race on in the spring that damage would worsen.

The stable will now be pinning their staying spring aspirations on last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up Sky Heights.

r5grichardson.jpg (7704 bytes)Sir View continued his excellent recent jumping form by scoring a comprehensive win in the Regal Royal Steeple (3200m) at Moonee Valley today.

Trained from the Mornington stables of the former kiwi Graham Richardson, Sir View made it back to back wins.

Last start the son of Lord Ballina scored a three quarter length win at Mornington over Kevie’s Luck.

Today’s win made it five consecutive placings from as many jumps starts this preparation since May when he was narrowly beaten at Mornington.

The nine-year-old was today ridden by former South Australian jockey Bill Williams, a jockey who has ridden Sir View at his past four starts.

Richardson, the winning trainer, is better known as the trainer of the high class middle distance mare It’s Platonic.

r4royalcode.jpg (12461 bytes)Multiple Group Two winner Royal Code looks on track to feature in some of the spring carnival features after a stylish exhibition gallop between races at Moonee Valley in Melbourne this afternoon.

A son of King’s Theatre, Royal Code and Brett Prebble got the better of Unbridled Smile after that horse was sent out with an early advantage.

Royal Code’s trainer David Hall said the gelding could clash with the brilliant colt Bel Esprit in the Group One Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley, a track at which he’s won two Group events.

r4royalcode4.jpg (12793 bytes)He will also be aimed toward the Bobbie Lewis Quality and a start in that race will depend how the handicapper treats him at the weights.

Part owned by well known Port Lincoln tuna fisherman Tony Santic, the man behind the Smytzer horses, Royal Code is a Group One placegetter and was switched to David Hall’s stable after an impressive first up win for his father Joe in Adelaide.

It was a big day for Joe in South Australia as a gelding he trains, Chading scored a thrilling win in the listed Balaklava Cup. Joe was not at the track, he is still laid up after a recent knee operation.

r9kerrinmcevoy.jpg (11484 bytes)Damien Oliver may have been "streets ahead" at the Scobie Breasley Medal count last week but he'll be involved in a "close shave" prior to Saturday's Silvan Australia Memsie Stakes meeting at Caulfield.

Oliver, along with fellow jockeys Brett Prebble, Kerrin McEvoy and Peter Mertens, will have his head shaved as part of the "Bluey Day" promotion to raise funds for the Royal Children's Hospital in recognition of it's great work with kids suffering from cancer.

The four jockeys will take the chair at 11.30am on Saturday and applying the hair clippers will be fellow "nude nuts" Darren Gauci, Greg Childs, Stephen Baster and Wayne Hawkes who underwent similar treatment recently at Moonee Valley.

If you can't be at Caulfield, you can catch the action live on Sky Channel with Alf Matthews (naturally) calling the action.

Saturday's promotion is one of a number conducted by various sections of the Victorian Racing Industry in recent weeks with total money raised expected to top $30,000.

0824pernod.jpg (18119 bytes)Quality mare Pernod will be set for the Group One Dubai Racing Club Cup (formerly the Eat Well Live Well Cup) after she returned to the track in winning style in yesterday’s listed Sir Edward Dunlop Research Foundation Stakes at Caulfield.

Trained by leading New Zealand horseman Michael Moroney, Pernod was first up since running a 1.6 length fifth in the Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane in June.

The win extended a love affair the daughter of Centaine has with the Caulfield track by scoring her fourth win from start number five at "the Heath."

0824pernod2.jpg (15880 bytes)Moroney pointed out after the race that Pernod had very little luck in her search for interstate greatness during her last preparation.

"It didn’t matter where we went she just kept running into hard tracks," Moroney said. "She really needs to have the jar out of the track."

He also said her form in Queensland held her in good stead for today’s event.

"She was only beaten a length and a half in the Stradbroke," he added.

0824pernod3.jpg (10482 bytes)"So that’s pretty good form for this race."

Yesterday was Pernod’s first win since her Group Three win in the Tristarc Stakes on the same day that Ethereal downed Sky Heights and Celestial Show in a thrilling Caulfield Cup.

"The race previously known as the Eat Well Live Well Cup is the race I really want to target now," Moroney confirmed.

In the run to the line Pernod and Kerrin McEvoy held a handy break over the eventual runner-up Calming, while Miss La La held third after racing on the pace throughout.
