Three women were taken to the nearby Dandenong Hospital after a freak incident at this afternoon’s re-opening meeting of the Pakenham Racecourse in Victoria.

The women were trampled by a runaway horse, which got loose after one of the early races at today’s meeting.

The 50/1 pop Zackajawaya is believed to have been spooked when he was coming back to scale after finishing fifth behind Kohinstad in the Cardinia Shire Council Maiden Plate and it leapt into the public enclosure.

Patrons at the meeting, including many children, scrambled for safety as the Judy Mawer trained runner looked for safety. To add further complications the horse was wearing blinkers.

A man, believed to be linked with the horse's stable, also suffered a broken hand when trying to recapture the galloper.

All races from the fourth event onwards were put back one race, delaying the afternoon by about 30 minutes.

For the majority of the straight "Jest Dreamin" was unable to obtain a clear run, and after passing the 200 metres shifted out and hampered "Ás a Wink".

Also after passing the 200 metres "Modern Glory" had to be checked when disappointed for a run between "She's a Monty" and "Alatac", which had shifted in.

Race 3 - CARDINIA SHIRE COUNCIL MAIDEN PLATE - 1750 metres:

After passing the winning post "Condition Red" had to be eased off the heels of "The Emperor's Hat (NZ)", which shifted in.

A B Robertson explained to the Stewards that after returning to the placegetters' stalls, he dismounted from "Zackajaywa", fifth placegetter, which then made contact with the divider on the side of the placegetters' stalls. "Zackajaywa" then forced its way through the opening at the front of the stall, and became loose in the area at the front of the stalls. "Zackajaywa", which had blinkers on, panicked and crashed over the outside rail of the placegetters' area before going through the Members' area and being caught in the birdcage area adjacent to the stripping sheds.

Due to the circumstances A. B. Robertson did not weigh in subsequent to the race. As the Stewards were satisfied that "Zackajaywa" had carried its allotted weight, correct weight was declared.

Race 4 - TABROOKE TIMBER MAIDEN PLATE - 1400 metres:

The starting time of this race was re-scheduled to be run at 2.15 p.m. due to there not being sufficient ambulances on course in accordance with the policy of Racing Victoria. Subsequently the race was further delayed due to an injured party having to be transported by another ambulance, and a further ambulance being required.

Shortly after jumping away "Just Precious (NZ)" got its head up, which resulted in M. Evans being struck in the head by his mount, and losing the use of his off-side stirrup iron for a short distance.

Rounding the first turn "Shenandoah (NZ)" had to be checked when brushed by "Dazzling Vintage", and shifted out towards the heels of "Pharline", which was shifting in.

Shortly after this incident "Venetian Blush" had to be eased to avoid the heels of "Shenandoah (NZ)" (W. Davis) which, after being tightened and shifting out, shifted back in. W. Davis was notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

r7kmcevoy.jpg (8986 bytes)Multiple Group One winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy had what would have to be described as a "mixed grill" in the saddle at Bendigo today.

The SA born and raised hoop was on fire with a winning treble, before chances of a fourth winner "slipped" away.

Aiming for winner number four on the last start hurdle winner Calcavecchia, McEvoy was placed in a tricky situation when his saddle slipped badly in the early to middle stages of the seventh event.

McEvoy lost all chances of being able to control the four-year-old, who managed to finish the race a long way from the action, incredibly still managing to beat another runner home, although being virtually pulled up out of the event.

Earlier the Melbourne Cup winning jockey had partnered the victorious gallopers All of Me, Las Chicas Buenas and Off to Sea.

It's been a big couple of days for McEvoy. Yesterday he partnered the classy Michael Moroney trained Pernod to a comprehensive win in the listed Sir Edward Dunlop Research Foundation Stakes at Caulfield.

Oh Girl! Innovation Could Be Brian's Best Ever

0817innovationgirl.jpg (18254 bytes)Experienced trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith has given Innovation Girl a huge compliment by saying she was up there with the best fillies he had trained in his career after she scored a stunning win in this afternoon's listed Quezette Stakes at Caulfield.

Mayfield-Smith, who's put the polish on such top class females as Group One stars Riverina Charm, Magic Flute and Diamond Shower, said Innovation Girl was "right up there."

"Riverina Charm is probably the best I've trained, but this filly is something special," he said. "She's very exciting."

In a warning to potential rivals, Mayfield-Smith also sent a signal to the connections of Melbourne's leading colt Bel Esprit, that he is not worried by the John Symons trained colt.

0817innovationgirl2.jpg (11237 bytes)"I have people rating horses in Sydney and they had her rated ahead of Bel Esprit last season," Mayfield-Smith said. "I've never been frightened of taking him on."

Innovation Girl, who was backing up after winning last Saturday's William Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley, is being aimed at the 1600 metre Group One Thousand Guineas.

"We took the blinkers off so she would learn to settle and get further in her races," Mayfield-Smith added.

Even if Innovation Girl happens to run in the Ascot Vale Stakes and beats the boys Mayfield-Smith said he would not run against them in the Caulfield Guineas.

"No, I would stick to the fillies in preference to that race," he added.

Winning jockey Nash Rawiller said he had "no doubt" the filly would be able to stretch out to 1600 metres.

0817bmayfieldsmith.jpg (11873 bytes)"You'd have to think a race like the (Thousand) Guineas would be ideal for her," Rawiller said.

Innovation Girl has now won six of her seven starts and was unlucky in her only defeat.

"The day she run second here against Yell, she just wanted to get off the track for about the 700 metre mark onwards," Mayfield-Smith said. "If she had of run straight Yell wouldn't have seen which way she went."

Mayfield-Smith also said Yell had turned out to be the measuring stick of two-year-olds last season by being a stakes performer in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

The David Brideoake trained Raven Protector ran a huge race at massive odds to finish second just ahead of the Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Brief Embrace.

Sports Earns Retirement Reprieve

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/20675--sp-375424604.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/quentin/images/0824sports.jpg desc=The threat of retirement does a lot to enhance the careers of a number of ageing gallopers and that happened... size=small}
0824sports.jpg (17715 bytes)The threat of retirement does a lot to enhance the careers of a number of ageing gallopers and that happened again at Caulfield yesterday when Sports earned a reprieve from retirement with a thrilling win in the Group Two JJ Liston Stakes.

In a finish that tricked most, including the winning connections, Sports with Brendan Fenech riding desperately, held on to down last year’s Liston winner Le Zagaletta by the barest of margins.

0824sports2.jpg (17463 bytes)Fenech and Wayne Hawkes, who’s father John trains Sports, both thought they had been grabbed in the final stride by the Lee Freedman trained runner-up.

"I was standing and watching the race with Lee (Freedman) and I thought his horse had got us right on the line, while he felt his horse had won," Hawkes said when the winning number was posted.

"Gee I thought the other one had got us at the finish," a pleasantly surprised Fenech said.

Hawkes revealed after the race that Sports was headed for a paddock at Woodlands Stud had he not performed in a positive style.

0824sports3.jpg (12539 bytes)"So I guess he’s earned a reprieve now," Hawkes said with a smile.

Connections decided to stretch the Zeditave gelding out to 1400 metres in an attempt to lead throughout, and those plans came to fruition with the eight-year-old holding on in a photo.

Sports, now the winner of 14 races, had not started over the 1400 metres since he missed a place in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at two, nearly six years ago.

"He’s been a tough old horse," Hawkes said. "He’s not quite up to the top level, but he still is a great horse and he proved that today."

0824sportsrtosc.jpg (15584 bytes)Unwanted in betting Sports ($26-$31) left the barriers like a rocket and was sent straight to the front by Fenech and then was forced to show plenty of fight when a challenge was issued in the final couple of strides by Le Zagaletta ($6-$7.50).

Australasian Oaks winner Tully Thunder ($51) caught the eye running home strongly pleasing her trainer Ross McDonald with her third placing.

Dash for Cash battled home fairly after being thereabouts throughout to finish fourth, just ahead of the favourite Elegant Fashion ($3.50-$4) who’s run was described as "pleasing" by trainer Tony McEvoy.

As expected the stayers Sky Heights, Brew, Firetaine, Silver Baron and Rose Archway all finished near the rear of the field.

Delago Does it For Tommy

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/28122--sp-618907938.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/quentin/images/0824delagobrom2.jpg desc=Boom Victorian three-year-old Delago Brom is on track for the spring riches and given his veteran trainer a great kick... size=small}
0824delagobrom.jpg (15181 bytes)Boom Victorian three-year-old Delago Brom is on track for the spring riches and given his veteran trainer a great kick along after scoring a fast finishing win in today's listed RSL Vain Stakes at Caulfield.

Touted early in his career as the best horse ever trained by the experienced horseman Tommy Hughes, Delago Brom worked home strongly to down the early leader Great Glen.

The colt's trainer Tommy Hughes is currently laid up in the Western Private Hospital after a stomach operation earlier this week.

Hughes Jnr said after the race that Delago Brom, a son of the leading Victorian sire Encosta de Lago, was likely to form a two pronged attack for the family in the Group Two Ascot Vale Stakes.

0824delagobrom2.jpg (16657 bytes)"Titanic Jack is going to go straight into the Ascot Vale," Hughes said. "So we might have the two runners in the race."

Hughes said he would sit down and discuss options for Delago Brom with his father and the horse's connections.

"He's a very exciting horse and right from day one he always showed us plenty (of ability)," Hughes said.

Delago Brom, who raced midfield for much of the event, was having his first start since finishing a three length second to Pillaging in the Group One VRC Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington in mid-March.

The connections of the runner-up Great Glen were pleased with the performance of the Adelaide Group winner.

0824delagobrom3.jpg (11042 bytes)"I was very pleased with that," his Morphettville based trainer Leon Macdonald said after the race.

"He just wanted to race a bit keen early and then he was left a sitting duck," rider Patrick Payne said.

Meanwhile, Lee Freedman the trainer of the third placegetter Broadband, was more than pleased with the effort of his galloper.

"All systems are go for the Guineas, that is the plan anyway," Freedman said. "I was very pleased with today's effort, he hit the line really well."

At the post a long head separated the first two horses, while the Lee Freedman trained Broadband was an eye catching third. King Wells battled hard to finish fourth just ahead of the in form Acee Deecee.

Despite a sparkling gallop between races at Seymour on Tuesday, exciting spring carnival prospect Rohatyn isn't a good thing in the listed Vain Stakes at Caulfield tomorrow.

Robbie Laing said this morning that Rohatyn impressed him by his gallop with stablemate Pantani at Seymour after what he thought was a lacklustre trial at Cranbourne a couple of weeks earlier.

"He wasn't that impressive down at Cranbourne," Laing told Sport 927. "But he did look good the other day at Seymour."

Laing's main query tomorrow will be the fact the son of Carnegie will have to carry topweight under the set weights and penalities scale.

0520rlaing.jpg (10188 bytes)"After he won that Group race in Adelaide over the carnival it made sure he would have to carry a high weight on Saturday."

"You wouldn't think he would be able to beat a horse like Delago Brom at the weights," Laing predicted.

Rohatyn is being targeted toward the Victoria Derby, but has been nominated for a couple of other Group One events in between including the Cox Plate.

"He's bred to get over some ground," Laing pointed out. "Lets not forget that Carnegie himself did not win under 2000 metres so for this fellow to win at 1000 metres might just make him a bit special."

RACING PIC - Exciting colt Rohatyn beats Blur in the Group Three Jansz in Adelaide in May (Jenny Barnes).
