Andrea Upstages Her Male Rivals at Sandown

Female jumps jockey Andrea Beveridge has upstaged her male rivals in the Fiscom Hurdle (3156m) at Sandown today, by downing the favourite after a faultless riding display on the talented jumped Bubble Gum.

Beveridge was able to get her mount to settle beautifully just behind the leaders before switching out to tackle the leader and favourite Woody Woodpecker.

By the time they had reached the final jump Bubble Gum had ranged up on the outside and put in a much better leap to hit the front with about 200 metres to run.

The Pakenham trained gelding made it back to back wins following his last start narrow win at Hamilton just over a week ago.

A son of Gold Carat, Bubble Gum was a maiden on the flat, but has now made it three wins from just five starts, and he is yet to miss a place over the obstacles.

The race was incident free before the in form Etoile Polair corkscrewed and lost the rider at the second last fence.

Today’s win by Bubble Gum helped erase some of the recent frustration for Beveridge when she was dislodged from the talented hurdler Tarlan at her most recent metropolitan jumps ride at Werribee last month.

But it was a different story for favourite punters. Today Bubble Gum was the outsider in the small field, as compared to her being an odds-on favourite when she rode Tarlan at Werribee.

FORM FACTS

Northerly backs up from his Memsie 4th, the WA champ being beaten once at the Craiglee distance of 1600m. Over the past decade, no horse contesting

the Craiglee has gone on to win the Cox Plate later in the Spring, Dulcify (1979) the last horse to complete the Craiglee-Cox Plate double. The Liston

Stakes is clearly the best form reference to the Craiglee, Don Eduardo, Elegant Fashion & Tully Thunder all performing well in the Liston and backing

up here. Four mares have won the Craiglee in the last 20 years, while Don Eduardo is out to emulate Sky Heights, Mahogany, Durbridge, Prolific &

Rose of Kingston, those horses (in the last 2 decades) taking the Craiglee after winning the AJC Derby in the autumn.

Redevelopment Plans Announced for Moonee Valley

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/31958--sp-1386987204.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/victoria.gif desc=The Moonee Valley Racing Club is set to undergo a significant upgrade after appointing a consortium of architects, Jackson Clements... size=small}
The Moonee Valley Racing Club is set to undergo a significant upgrade after appointing a consortium of architects, Jackson Clements Burrows and Daryl Jackson Pty Ltd, to develop a facilities Master Plan.

The architects have been asked to develop a concept design and implementation plan by mid December. An 'opportunity matrix' will also developed, which will explore all opportunities for redevelopment.

"The redevelopment is part of the Club's vision to attract new Members and provide the highest quality facilities and services to existing Members," said MVRC Chief Executive Paul Brettell.

As part of their design the architects will be asked to build on the Club's intimacy by enhancing the opportunity for Members to view the horses pre-race, during the race and post- race, while being entertained in state of the art facilities. The ground level will also be addressed, with the aim being to create an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness for members and their guests. This may require the demolition of some existing facilities.

"In essence, given the compact nature of our facilities, we intend featuring 'the horse'. We will open up the stalls area, parade ring and mounting yard, so that they are more obvious and accessible to all. We need to build our point of difference, that being the closeness of the track to the viewing audience. By doing this we believe we can make a day at the races truly a day with 'the horse'," said Mr Brettell.

Other areas will also be addressed, including an increase in dining box facilities, greater access to viewing areas as well as looking at the option of temporary facilities for major race days.

"Better facilities will drive more people to attend and grow the Membership base, both of which are integral to the Club's Business Plan 'Racing the Dream- The Valley Vision', which was announced in March," said Mr Brettell.

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/17420--sp-994697989.html layout=standard image=http://www.cyberhorse.com.au/tvf/irvine/images/0519swebb.jpg desc=The Stewards today inquired into the analyst’s finding on the pre-race blood sample taken from “Lochi” which ran third in... size=small}
0519swebb.jpg (12079 bytes)The Stewards today inquired into the analyst’s finding on the pre-race blood sample taken from “Lochi” which ran third in the Robyn Maceys Panmure Hotel Class 4 Handicap run at Warrnambool racecourse on the 12th August, 2002.

The pre-race blood sample taken from “Lochi” was for post-race analysis.

The analyst reported that “Lochi” had a total carbon dioxide (TCO2) concentration greater than 36.0 mmol/l in plasma.

Evidence was taken today from Mr S Webb, trainer of “Lochi”, Dr J Vine, Laboratory Director of Racing Analytical Services Limited, Dr J McCaffrey, Director of Veterinary Services Racing Victoria, Mr P McMillan, Racecourse Detective Racing Victoria and written submissions were tendered by Mr M Webb, Stable Foreman for Mr S Webb and Melbourne Equine Veterinary Group.

Mr S Webb was found guilty of a charge of having brought “Lochi” to the Warrnambool racecourse on the 12th August, 2002, for the purpose of engaging in the Robyn Maceys Panmure Hotel Class 4 Handicap when it was found on analysis to have had administered to it a prohibited substance as defined in AR1.

Mr Webb was fined the sum of $8,000.

The Stewards disqualified “Lochi” as third placegetter and the amended placings are:- 1st “West Highland Way”, 2nd “Scremus”, 3rd “My Decision (NZ)”, 4th “Bonoval”, 5th Spec of Silver (NZ)”.

After hearing submissions from all of the parties concerned and having viewed the stewards patrol video and the side on patrol video, stewards dismissed the objection. It was established that near the 200 metres Chapeau shifted out and made slight contact with Never Buy Better. Passing the 50 metres Chapeau again shifted out and brushed Never Buy Better. From that point onwards Never Buy Better and Chapeau raced tightly due mainly to Chapeau continuing to shift out. B. M. Pumpa, rider of Patriarch which performed below expectations stated that the gelding travelled well in the early stages and then failed to respond to his riding from the 600 metres. M. Pumpa added that in his opinion Patriarch was feeling the effects of recent racing. A subsequent veterinary examination of Patriarch was showing signs of a slight respiratory complaint.

Fielke Calls for Unified Approach to Pubtab Solution

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/26463--sp-1679055023.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/victoria.gif desc=The Victorian Racing Industry (VRI) believes that all parties involved in the current PubTAB dispute must work together to find... size=small}

The Victorian Racing Industry (VRI) believes that all parties involved in the current PubTAB dispute must work together to find an equitable solution

‘It is now time for all parties to move away from a combative media approach to a new climate where the needs of the punter and the growth of our industry are paramount, ‘ Neville Fielke said today.

Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) Chief Executive Officer, Neville Fielke said today that the recent biased statements by the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) did not paint a true picture of the situation, nor do they adequately address what is a complex distribution and financial issue.

‘This issue has arisen in circumstances specific to Victoria and is a problem that has been simmering over a number of years’.

‘Any suggestion by other parties to this dispute that there is an easy solution are false.

Let me repeat - there is no quick fix and whilst racing is not the only party to admit there is a problem, we are one of the only parties to be putting up viable and workable solutions,’ Fielke said.

‘We’ve identified that it is the smaller country PubTABS – those without gaming facilities – as the ones being squeezed here. The AHA are trying to put every PubTAB under the same umbrella when quite clearly, the large entertainment complexes in provincial and metro areas are in a completely different category.

‘There is no such thing as an "average" PubTAB or hotel,’ Neville Fielke said.

However, Fielke said that TABCorp and Sky Channel also had to play their part in any resolution of the issue together with the PubTABs and the VRI.

‘Let’s not forget that when Sky signed a new contract for our racing vision, they saved almost 50% compared to the previous deal and have not passed this saving onto PubTAB operators in Victoria. However they have provided some price certainty going forward.’ Fielke said.

As for questions that were raised in relation to incentives that provide for wagering growth, Neville Fielke said that all parties to the dispute need to come to the table with real solutions, not just rhetoric and expectations of a blank cheque handout.

‘TABCorp need to reassess their focus from restructuring and cost-cutting to growing wagering turnover and driving innovation while Sky Channel’s fee structure is such that PubTAB’s are given no incentive to grow the wagering side of their businesses. In fact, Sky is "double-dipping" and penalising growth by charging more.

‘We want to re-write the rules for the hardship group of small PubTAB operators with no gaming facilities as a first priority. '

'We’re committed to solving the problem for the long term benefit of all parties and we are working hard to find a solution, for the smaller hardship operator first, and later to the wagering industry in general.’

Fielke said that VRI was working hard on a solution and he hoped to announce details about a package of initiatives shortly that are aimed at growing wagering and providing immediate assistance to smaller non-gaming PubTABS.

‘The time for media posturing has ended. '

'It’s now time to begin to address the fundamental issues and for real solutions to be put on the table.'

'There is no doubt a multi-year approach needs to be taken that will help the overall economies of the PubTAB distribution channel. '

'Let’s work towards a broad, practical solution and get on with the job of providing the world’s best racing and customer service to our Victorian punter,’ Neville Fielke said.

0906davidhayes.jpg (7415 bytes)International trainer David Hayes is looking forward to Saturday’s Group 2 Craiglee Stakes (1600m) at Flemington with his first Australian runner in more than seven years.

And it will bring back many memories for the South Australian, as the race provided his first Group success with the now all-conquering sire Zabeel, who happens to be the sire of his runner, Helene Vitality.

Helene Vitality raced in New Zealand as Hades, winning the NZ Derby, and placed in the Australian Guineas.

"The time has really flown but it must have been 12 year ago," Hayes said from Hong Kong. "Zabeel helped get me started so it will be good to return for that meeting. I’m really looking forward to it."

Hayes will use the race as a starting point for the former New Zealand galloper, who has been under his care in Hong Kong for the last couple of seasons.

But Hayes isn’t expecting too much, happy just to see him run a solid race as he prepares for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

"He’s had an exhibition gallop and a trial but I think he’ll find the 1600m too short," Hayes said. "I’d just like to see him running on. He has settled into the Flemington stables well and he’s been given a good grounding. He’s eating much more in Australia as well."

Another South Australian enjoying success in Hong Kong, top jockey Dwayne Dunn, is likely to ride Helene Vitality in his Caulfield Cup start and, then perhaps the Melbourne Cup. Dunn, who finished sixth in the Hong Kong jockeys premiership last season, has ridden the gelding a number of times for a couple of placings – including a last-start second in the Group 1 Charter Cup (2400m) in mid May.

"Dwayne has been a bit unlucky on him," Hayes said. "He’s a premier horse and, in Hong Kong, you have to run the horses when the races come up. But unfortunately he’s struck a number of wet tracks and he doesn’t really like the going. Dwayne’s done nothing wrong on him and I’d like him to be in the saddle for the Caulfield Cup."

Helene Vitality has 54.5kg in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Vasil, trainer of "Lady Circles", approached the Stewards and advised them that in his view he had not applied for "Lady Circles" to race in blinkers, and was unaware that a stable return had been lodged placing blinkers on the filly. After checking the records, and as there was a doubt as to whether the records were accurate, the Stewards permitted "Lady Circles" to race without blinkers.

Rounding the home turn "Maranello Miss" became unbalanced, and shifted out towards the heels of "El Capitan".

In the straight "France Soir" hung in.

D. Gauci, rider of "Tweak" which had performed below expectations, explained to the Stewards that his mount was better suited by not leading in races, but due to the pace today he elected to take the sit behind the leader. Gauci added that his mount had not responded to his riding when asked to go forward after passing the 600 metres, and had weakened in the straight. Gauci also added that "Tweak" appeared to pull up well.

"Pindarri Gold", which was restless in its stall, jumped away awkwardly.

D. Oliver, rider of "Chardonnay and Ice", explained to the Stewards that his mount had hung out throughout the race and that he was concerned with its action. Oliver added that it was for that reason that he eased the mare down in the straight. A veterinary examination of "Chardonnay and Ice" revealed that the mare was sore in the near fore leg. Mr. R. Smerdon was notified that prior to "Chardonnay and Ice" racing again he must produce a veterinary clearance for it.

G. Childs, rider of 'Ziparche", advised the Stewards that the gelding had hung out badly rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, and in his view it was unsuited to racing on firm tracks and was better suited by racing on rain-affected tracks, on which the horse had performed well in recent starts. G. Childs added that "Ziparche" appeared to pull up well.

K. McEvoy, rider of "Philbel", explained to the Stewards that his mount had travelled well in the early and middle stages of the race, but when asked to go forward near the 1000 metres failed to respond to his riding. McEvoy added that as "Philbel" was weakening he did not ride his mount with his normal vigour over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination of "Philbel" failed to reveal any abnormality.
