Adelaide and Melbourne's premier trainer Tony McEvoy passed a career milestone at Oakbank on Easter Saturday when he saddled up winner number 500.

It's been an incredibly fast trip to the magical 500 for McEvoy since he took over the training at Lindsay Park in late March 2001 following the tragic death of Peter Hayes.

Medipal, a six-year-old jumping son of St. Covet enabled McEvoy to reach the 500 mark on the Easter Saturday card at Oakbank.

The last start Cheltenham flat winner made a one act affair of the Ord Minnett Sharebrokers Hurdle (2900m), beating his rivals by nearly 15 lengths in a faultless jumping display.

McEvoy said the gelding was a jumping star of the future and it was great to reach the milestone with a jumping winner over the famous Oakbank weekend.

"He is a very good jumper," McEvoy reported. "And he has a really bright future over the jumps."

Not content with Medipal's impressive win over the jumps, McEvoy ended the afternoon with an interstate treble.

The other star performer on Easter Saturday was the former Hong Kong performer St Vivant who won the Coca Cola Bottlers Handicap.

Up to April 22, McEvoy had further boosted his winning list to 504 with further successes around the country.

McEvoy is also on track to give David Hayes' record breaking 306 winning season a real shake. At present the current Lindsay Park boss has 233 winners for the season.

To the present time McEvoy leads the Adelaide training premiership by a staggering 40 winners, while he also hold a 6.5 win buffer in the Melbourne title race.

Oakbank Races Saturday 19th April 2003

The first day of the two day carnival opened in very warm weather for late April.  A record crowd for the Saturday was in attendance for the once a year carnival known as the Worlds Biggest Picnic meeting.

Traditionally the 2yo race opens proceedings and this year followed suit with the tipsters all indicating that the race would be a match between topweight Half Edgy and the John Hawkes trained Wardroom.  In the end though it was the King of Kings gelding Solomon who just behind the leader before racing away in the run to the line.

In the second race the Gary Kennewell trained Zakuro confirmed her ability in racing away for her fourth win in 14 starts making it two in a row after winning at Gawler last start.

The third race was the first jumping race of the weekend the Hurdle over 2900m.  Medipal lived up to expectations in racing away from the opposition to win by 14 lengths one of the most authoritive wins over hurdles at Oakbank in years.  After the race Medipal parted company with jockey Steven Pateman and galloped back up the straight before being captured by the clerk of the course.

Back to the flat racing and Autoplay broke her maiden status in good fashion when she stormed home down the centre of the track to win from Night Thunder.

Lucentier made it a race to race training double from two runners for Jeremy Gask in winning the next the Johnston Hcp from Arabian Towers with Running Game third.

The Tony McEvoy stable brought up its second winner of the day and number 501 for Tony as the head trainer at Lindsay Park in race 6 as St Vivant showed the formed he'd been promising in two previous starts after returning from Hong Kong.  St Vivant gave nothing else a chance winning easily from talented Social Glow with speedy Leta third.

The main jumping race of the day was next the Von Doussa Steeplechase as racegoers looked for the top hopes for the big race on Monday the Great Eastern.  In a dramatic last lap of the Oakbank jumping course Sober Comment led Crown Duo and Okahu Prinz but coming to a jump soon after the famous fallen log Crown Duo hit the front but fell as did Sober Comment and Okahu Prinz swerved to avoid the fallen horses and in doing so dislodged jockey Clayton Chipperfield.  Meanwhile Striding Edge raced well clear with only the riderless Okahu Prinz ahead of him.  The Rampager gave chase once the jumping was finished as they galloped down the home straight.  Inside the final 150m The Rampager got the lead and drew away to win from Striding Edge with Turkey Lane running on late for third.  The riderless Okahu Prinz actually passed the post first as Sober Comment quickly got to his feet and chased the field.  Okahu Prinz somehow got out of the racecourse and led the clerk of the course on a chase through Oakbank heading up the main road and ultimately being recaptured in the gold course much to the surprise of some club members out on their weekend golf rounds.

The Listed sprint the Clipsal Stakes was the next race on the card.  Identifiable was looking for his 8th straight win and went to the lead soon after the start.  Speaker challenged in the straight but Identifiable fought hard to keep the lead but in the final stages the talented Zedimbi found a run along the inside and powered home to get up in the last few bounds to win from Identifiable with Speaker holding third from Lazing About.

The final event on a huge day of racing was the Shillabeer Plate.  In the run to the line Ponentina was well clear of her rivals winning her 9th racein 32 starts.

While most of the recent success of graduates from the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale has been achieved by gallopers on the flat, another of the great money earners from the sale today captured the state’s feature hurdling event, the $94,400 Yalumba Classic Hurdle (3600m) at Oakbank.

The former talented flat performer Risky Venture (Umatilla-Bailarin), a $36,000 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale graduate for his former trainer Leon Macdonald, sent his stakes level to an amazing $221,655.

With Craig Durden in the saddle the six-year-old gelding prepared by Eric Musgrove proved a length too good for Alias Prince, while the highly rated kiwi Real Tonic was a further length and three quarter away in third place.

Other Adelaide Sale graduates featured in feature events around the country. Oxford Dollar, who could have been bought for just $10,000, boosted his stakes to $308,850 with a solid third placing in the listed Onkaparinga Cup at Oakbank. At Caulfield the lightly raced Lloyd Williams owned two-year-old Piping (Secret Savings-Nightly Class), a $41,000 purchase, won Melboourne’s juvenile event in the most impressive fashion. In Perth the lightly raced Golden Prospect scored a Group One placing when he fought hard for a gutsy third in the Group One WATC Derby.

The main hurdle race for the weekend following the Harry D Young Hurdle a race Zama Lad made his own in the early 80s winning it 4 times.  We Ourselves had been the only horse to win the race twice or more since with his back to back wins in 1999 and 2000.  This year 2001 winner Preludes was lining up to try and take out his second victory in the race.  Alias Prince led the field for most of the race but Risky Venture challenged and took the lead before the last.  Alias Prince ran wide at that fence as Risky Venture put in a huge leap landing in front.  In the run to the line Risky Venture came away to win with Real Tonic taking third place.  Comely King had a spectacular fall over the last fence but both horse and rider were fine.  Sadly Preludes was pulled up after breaking down a few strides after a fence approaching the 600m.  He was found to have suffered a compound fracture of the near fore pastern and became the second horse to be put down of the weekend.  On Saturday Crown Duo was found to have suffered a broken shoulder after falling in the Von Doussa.  Both horses were members of the Eric Musgrove stable who took out the two events with other runners and both were experienced successful jumpers with Preludes in particular having won 5 of his 15 starts over jumps.

The next race was the Country Cup and the well fancied Tony McEvoy runner March in Style was successful from Cazique.

The LISTED Onkaparinga Cup was the next event decided.  Terminus Prince led early but Chase Harry soon took over and set the others the task to do just that.  To try and catch the leader.  Chase Harry defied all attempts to catch him winning from Bellton with Oxford Dollar (2002 winner of the event) third.

It was back to the jumping for the principal race of the carnival the Great Eastern Steeplechase over three laps of the testing Oakbank jumping course.  Crafty Dancer led by the end of the jumping on the first lap while The Rampager kept close with local hope Raquets further back in the field.  Towards the end of the second lap of jumping Delegate misjudged a fence and fell causing some interference to Pooky Bear but Turkey Lane had to step over the fallen horse and faded soon after (he was pulled up within a lap).  Delegate chased the field before being captured by the clerk of the course in the home straight.  Meanwhile Crafty Dancer led The Rampager as Raquets started to angle out for a clear run in the final lap.  Over the hill and Delete Me Not misjudged and fence and although he kept his feet his jockey was dislodged.  Into the final two jumps Crafty Dancer had fought off The Rampager but Raquets was up to second and challenging the leader.  Over the last fence Raquets joined Crafty Dancer as Outback almost sold out after reportedly jumping the fence unsighted but recovered to continue his run. Raquets proved the better galloper on the flat and came away to win from Crafty Dancer with Outback third and The Rampager fourth.  All fallen and pulled up horses and jockeys were OK.

As the shadows became longer the final two races were decided with Tormentus winning the 7th and Sunturwasi the 8th with both swooping late for victory.  Second to Sunturwasi Classic Dream did a great job as the saddle slipped in the final stages and just after the post jockey Wayne Kerford dismounted due to the saddle ending on on the side of the horse.

Oakbank is over for another year with new legends now in the history books.  The huge crowd departing the course for the slow trek back to town with most planning to do it again next year at the Worlds Biggest Picnic Race Meeting.

Gask Makes Oakbank Debut With Winning Treble

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/11474--sp-1065674522.html layout=standard image=http://www.trsa.com.au/images/People/gaskjeremy desc=It was back to work for Goolwa trainer Jeremy Gask first thing this morning but he did have a quiet... size=small}
It was back to work for Goolwa trainer Jeremy Gask first thing this morning but he did have a quiet celebration last night after a successful long weekend at Oakbank.

Gask took just three horses to the hills course but managed to return with three winners - a great achievement in anyone's language.

On Saturday, tough filly Autoplay broke through for her maiden win in a non-metropolitan winners race while in the very next race Lucentier continued his good form by winning a one metropolitan win event.

Then on the Monday, in the final event of the carnival, talented mare Sunturwasi returned from a lay-off to score in a fillies amd mares race.

"It was my first visit to Oakbank as a trainer so it was a thrill to have winners on both days," Gask said. "Lucentier was definitely set for his race but everything went right for the other two. It was a great result."

Gask is now setting his sights higher for all three horses. Sunturwasi, a winner of six races already, will be aimed at the Group 2 Marsh Classic for fillies and mares at Morphettville on May 10 but she needs to do everything right in the meantime.

"Her first-up run was in early March but she jarred up badly and ran accordingly," Gask said. We've been behind the eight-ball with her and she was pretty big going into yesterday's race but she did a great job. I want to run her in the Marsh but she's got a bit of catching up to do. There's no real Plan B though so we'll pour the work into her over the next fortnight."

Lucentier was a tough winner two starts ago at Strathalbyn when wide all the way then kept up the good work over 1900m in his Oakbank win.

"He's a stayer on the way up," Gask said. "He's bred for more ground and he's going along well so I'll probably step him up a grade next start."

"Autoplay is a tough little filly but is still learning. She's probably just below the better three-year-old grade so it's a bit tricky to place her, but she'll probably come to town as well next start."
