Race 1 - GOLD CLUB SPONSORSHIP MAIDEN PLATE - 1600 metres:

In the middle stages of the race Sir Broderick had a tendency to lay in.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight Shelltrice was hampered and taken out off its course due to Ducasse (P.Robl) attempting to shift out to obtain a run between Heleray Star and Shelltrice when there was insufficient room. Ducasse then continued to shift out under pressure and inconvenienced Shelltrice. P. Robl was severely reprimanded and notified he must ensure that he has sufficient galloping room when attempting to take runs in the future.

Race 2 - WODONGA SUPER VOBIS THREE-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN PLATE - 1100 metres

Acting on a report from the starter that Yanga's Girl had proved difficult to load and had delayed the start of the race Stewards notified Mr R. Linnell, trainer of Yanga's Girl, that an official warning would be placed against the filly for her behaviour today and that should Yanga's Girl perform in a similar manner in the future further action may be taken against it. Mr Linnell was further notified that prior to Yanga's Girl racing again a barrier test certificate must be produced in respect of the filly.

Subsequent to the event the club's veterinary surgeon reported that Heart Attack had sustained a cut to its near hind leg during the running of the race.

Race 3 - BECOME A WODONGA MEMBER PLATE - 1400 metres

Sefton and Thunder Edition began awkwardly.

Shortly after the start Weadora had to be eased when tightened for room between Zardapper and Jagstar which shifted in. When being eased Weadora threw its head in the air and lost ground.

Near the 600 metres Nincompoop had to be checked to avoid the heels of Just Ours which shifted out when being eased off the heels of Findhorn Loon which shifted out slightly when weakening.

Near the 100 metres Sefton shifted in away from Nincompoop and in doing so inconvenienced Just Ours.

Race 4 - RACEDAY PACKAGES CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1100 metres

No report.

Race 5 -TOOHEYS NEW HANDICAP - 1400 metres

The start of the race was delayed to enable the removal of a racing plate located on the track near the 1000 metres.

After being placed in the barrier Balmy Bar broke through its front stall and cantered a short distance.

Balmy Bar was then returned to the barrier and took its place in the field.

After being placed in its stall Al Borak became fractious and then became momentarily cast. Al Borak was then removed from its stall, examined by the club's veterinary surgeon who reported that the gelding was unfit to run. Acting on this advice Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Al Borak at 3.09pm.

Stewards orders in relation to betting with bookmakers in accordance with Rules of Betting 4(e)

M. Alesci, rider of Scenic Torque, stated that he eased the gelding down in the home straight as he was concerned with Scenic Torque's action. A subsequent veterinary examination of Scenic Torque revealed no abnormalities.

Race 6 - 55 DAYS TO WODONGA CUP CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 2050 metres

In the early and middle stages of the race Centuism had a tendency to over race.

Rounding the home turn Stage Front shifted out to improve and when doing so made contact with the hindquarters of Centuism.

After passing the 200 metres B. Ward, rider of Scarpia, dropped his whip.

Over the concluding stages of the race Stage Front laid out under pressure and inconvenienced Centuism .

Race 7 - BOXING DAY PROMO CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1200 metres

Namrod was slow to begin.

On jumping away Achieved shifted out and hampered Powerful.

In the early stages of the race Achieved and Gorki over raced.

Approaching the winning post Gorki had to be eased to avoid the heels of Perada which shifted out under pressure.

Race 8 - BUNDY ENCLOSURE 19/10 CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1400 metres

When the gates opened Spurious stood flat footed and lost ground. After taking evidence from G. Evagora, rider of Spurious and Mr B. Cox, trainer of the horse, Mr B. Cox was notified that Spurious would not be permitted to race again until such time that the horse performs to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a trial. In arriving at their decision stewards took into account that Spurious had performed in a similar manner previously.

G. Evagora rider of Spurious, fourth placegetter, was fined the sum of $200.00 for failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race. In arriving at their decision Stewards were not fully satisfied that G. Evagora's action had affected the placings.

Sixty Seconds May Race in America

1005sixtyseconds.jpg (13058 bytes)The four-year-old Centaine mare Sixty Seconds (NZ) has been retired from racing in Australasia after a bleeding attack during the Group 2 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

The big, lightly framed, mare was being prepared for a run in the Carlton Draught Caulfield Cup on October 19th, 2002. Sixty Seconds (NZ) will have a change of direction now with her owners investigating racing her in the United States.

Trained by Roger James from his Flemington stables the mare performed at the highest level during her three-year-old career and this culminated in her win in the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill on March 23rd, 2002.

Prior to that run, Sixty Seconds (NZ) (ex Fifteen Reasons by Sound Reason), had won the Group 2 Fayette Park Championship Stakes, 2100m, at Ellerslie and recorded a Group 1 placing in the Mercedes New Zealand Derby, 2400m, also at Ellerslie. Sixty Seconds (NZ) finishes her racing career with a record of 12 starts, four wins and three places and stakes of $A376,181.

Glenlogan Park Stud Queensland, purchased Sixty Seconds (NZ) as a yearling at New Zealand Bloodstock Ltd’s Premier Yearling Sales for $A80,000.

However in what may well become a trend for northern hemisphere breeders Sixty Seconds (NZ) was purchased by Gerald Leigh for $A1m after her Group 2 Fayette Park Championship Stakes win. Leigh, one of England’s top breeders, unfortunately passed away earlier this year from cancer, but his family have continued to race Sixty Seconds (NZ).

James and other prominent bloodstock agents have reported a lift in interest in European breeders investigating the Australasian yearling market for quality fillies, with the performance of Sixty Seconds (NZ) playing a major part in this interest.

0817innovationgirl.jpg (18254 bytes)Astute Flemington based trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith will run Innovation Girl in Saturday’s $100,750 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield after he aborted plans to start her in the weekend’s Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington.

Mayfield-Smith chose to scratch the brilliant filly after she drew awkwardly in the race that was won by Coupe in a thrilling finish.

"It would have just been too harder task," Mayfield-Smith said. "So we are reserving her."

"There is nothing wrong with her and she should start at Caulfield – all going well," he added.

When nominations closed at noon today 17 entries were received for the Thoroughbred Club Stakes on Caulfield Guineas, Yalumba Stakes and Toorak Handicap day.

Aside from the brilliant three-year-old daughter of Rubiton, other interesting nominations include Edgeton, Firenza, Insightful and Toast of the Coast.

The Woodborough filly, Wooden Masque, dented plenty of big reputations with her all-the-way win in the Lindauer Rose Juvenile (880m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Visiting Taranaki two-year-old Tommy Doolin was all the rage for the $20,000 event after a 10-length trial win.

Discreet and Alberton Rose were also strongly fancied.

But it was the Diane Knowles-trained Wooden Masque who came out on top after clocking a time of 50.75 for the journey and scoring at odds of 14 to one for in-form apprentice Cameron Lammas.

Wooden Masque is the second winner from her dam, Magic Move. The other is two-time winner, Magic Masque (by Hunza Court).

Both Wooden Masque and Magic Masque were bred by Hamilton farmer Stuart Seath

Oliver a Lucky Little Tacker

0817doliver.jpg (16282 bytes)Former talented Adelaide galloper The Little Tacker notched up his first Victorian win in impressive style when he proved too slick for his rivals in the Razor Sharp Handicap (1000m) at Flemington this afternoon.

Now trained by leading Wagga Wagga based horseman Greg McDermott, The Little Tacker defied his small stature to score a big win.

After showing great early pace out of the barriers, the son of Ideal Planet, then was able to idle up to the 300 metres mark when he was able to fight off the challenge of the Adelaide visitor Unrocel Saint and then the late charge from the local Phinrow.

Damien Oliver was aboard the game little chestnut five-year-old today, after it originally looked as though he would be racing against him earlier in the week.

"We rang to get Damien earlier in the week, but his manager said he had a ride in the race, but he suggested we use Craig Newitt instead," McDermott recalled of his initial conversation with jockey manager Bruce Clark, the man who manages both Oliver and Newitt.

"Then he (Clark) rang back and said Damien was available to ride him so we switched back to him again."

Ironically Newitt was then able to pick up the ride on the race favourite Unrocel Saint, who was the eventual third placegetter in the event.

McDermott said after the race that he had no grand plans for The Little Tacker.

"We’ll just poke around in similar kinds of races," McDermott said. "I’m sure there are some nice races around over the carnival period for him."

He added that the gelding would most probably be freshened up again before he races next.

"He is such a good horse first up and fresh," McDermott said of the gelding who boasts a record of two wins from three first up attempts.

Prior to today’s race the gelding had not started since finishing a close up sixth to Beamer at Canterbury on August 25. Before that run he finished a one length second to handy Hawkes performer Trenches at the same track.

Patience Pays for Miss Marion

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/33804--sp-48512725.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/victoria.gif desc=Miss Marion repaid her connections for a great deal of patience when she scored an impressive win on debut in... size=small}
r6sbaster.jpg (8992 bytes)Miss Marion repaid her connections for a great deal of patience when she scored an impressive win on debut in today’s Collins Dental Image Sprint (1000m) down the straight at Flemington today.

With Stephen Baster riding hard, Miss Marion (Success Express-Golden Deed) was able to hold off the challenge of the warm favourite Dual Spark, a filly who chased home the brilliant filly Innovation Girl at her last start.

A $30,000 yearling at the 2001 Melbourne Premier Sale, Miss Marion made up for her earlier problems by winning her connections all but $500 of her purchase price back today with the combined total of the first stakes money and a Super Vobis bonus of $10,000.

"She was ready to start as an early two-year-old," her Flemington based trainer Steve McKinnon reflected today. "We were even thinking of aiming her for the Debutant Stakes."

"But she went shinny and then in the autumn we had to send her out again when she tore a muscle in her hind quarter."

McKinnon said the striking looking filly had shown him early that she possessed a great deal of natural ability.

"I really liked her as a type as a yearling at the sale," he said. "And her pedigree was quite nice too."

Miss Marion, a daughter of the now Victorian based Success Express, is from the twice Flemington stakes placed Jevington mare Golden Deed. That makes her a member of the family of the Group One Karrakatta Plate winner Golden Unicorn.

Connections are hoping the three-year-old can continue to take her step through the ranks.

"We probably should have took a softer option with her and run her in a maiden and have a good bet on her," he said. "But that wouldn’t help in trying to get in the better races with her."

"There’s still plenty of improvement in her and she might be able to get 1400 metres as she settles well and seems to do everything right."

Dual Spark, who was unbeaten in two starts in Melbourne before a second placing to Innovation Girl in the Group Three Dermody Stakes in Adelaide, chased hard but was unable to peg back the winner down the straight.

Bold Cheree, who was coming off an impressive Class 4 win at Moe, battled away well to finish third ahead of the Alan Bailey trained Group One placegetter Saddler’s Silk.

 5 “Lady Trice” A. Findlay J. Didham

Race 1 - COLLINS DENTAL IMAGE SPRINT - 1000 metres:

Near the 600m “Watutsi”, when being steadied, shifted in and brushed “Vegas Show”.  “Vegas Show”, which was racing close to the heels of “Miss Marion” and “Dama De Noche”, then clipped the heels of “Miss Marion” and knuckled when “Miss Marion” shifted out slightly.  After passing the 200m, “Watutsi” had to be checked off the heels of “Miss Marion” when attempting a run between “Miss Marion” and “Vegas Show”.

Race 2 - MARIBYRNONG TRIAL STAKES - 900 metres:

“Sunday’s Glory” shifted in abruptly on jumping away and hampered “Sircail”.

Race 3 - CUP HURDLE- 3250 metres:

“Waratah Special”, which was pulled up after jumping the second last hurdle, was found to be lame in the near hind leg.  T. Carson, the trainer of the mare, was notified that prior to racing again he must produce a medical clearance for the horse.  A. Beveridge, rider of “Nostrovia” stated that after the gelding made faulty jumps over the hurdles at the 1500m and again at the 1100m, she believed that something was amiss with it and for this reason she eased it out of the race.  A Veterinary examination of  “Nostrovia” subsequent to the race failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 4 - NIGHTMARCH HANDICAP - 2000 metres: J. Didham was notified, in accordance with the rules, as rider of "Lexitaw".  In the straight, “Meridien Magic” hung in and for this reason S. Wynne was unable to ride the gelding out in her normal manner.  Near the 300m “Lexitaw”, which was giving ground, was hampered when tightened for room between “Skinjite (NZ)” and “King Salieri (NZ)”, which was taken out by “Teerex”, which shifted out to obtain a run.

Race 5 - BAGUETTE HANDICAP - 1430 metres:

Near the 1000m, “Harms Way” was tightened for room and “Royal Calcutta” was hampered when tightened for room by “Encosta Legend”, which had a tendency to shift in away from “Enfold” before being taken in slightly by that gelding, which shifted in before being straightened.  D. Gauci, rider of “Enfold” was notified that he must ensure that he is sufficiently clear of others when shifting ground at all times.  At the entrance to the straight, “Royal Calcutta” had to be checked when tightened for room between “Enfold” which shifted in slightly when weakened and “Harms Way” shifted out to obtain a run on the outside of “Lady Trice”.  As no one rider was fully responsible the Stewards took no action, however, M. Pumpa, rider of “Harms Way”, was notified that he must exercise the utmost care when attempting runs in future.  Shortly after this incident “Enfold” had to be eased off the heels of “Encosta Legend” which shifted in under pressure.  Subsequent to the race the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that “Encosta Legend” was sore in the near foreleg.  A. Bennett, trainer of “Encosta Legend” was notified that prior to the gelding racing again, she must produce a veterinary clearance for it.

Race 6 - RAZOR SHARP HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

“Phinrow” which was restless in the stalls, was slow to begin.  Near the 500m “Phinrow” became unbalanced when racing tight on the outside of “The Little Tacker”.  Also near the 400m, “Blofeld” was tightened for room between “Kelshiki” and “Unrocel Saint”.  Shortly after this incident “Pompous” became unbalanced when tightened for room between “Keldance” and “On The Ranch” which shifted in when weakening.  “Look  For A Star”, which was following “On The Ranch”, then had to be checked off the heels of that gelding.  C. Newitt, rider of “Unrocel Saint” was notified that he must ensure that he rides all his mounts out to the end of the race.

Race 7 - FIRE OAK HANDICAP - 1800 metres:

The Stewards authorised the withdrawal of "Zatopek" (NZ) at 9.35am when it was established that T. Scott, trainer of the gelding, was incorrectly advised by the Trainers Services Centre that the track rating for today's meeting was "Good" when it was in fact officially rated "Dead", which cost the horse a run.  On the home turn “Prince Baa Baa” had to be checked when disappointed for a run between “Yo Yo Ma” and “Tezza Raami” which was weakening when being checked.  “Prince Baa Baa” shifted in which resulted in “Baralae” being tightened for room and then being checked.  After passing the 1000m “Wild Classic” was taken out by “Smoking Barrel”, which shifted out to improve its position on the outside of “Yo Yo Ma”.  L. Milham, rider of “Prince Baa Baa” which performed below expectations, stated that the gelding raced in a forward position in the early and middle stages of the race but was  hampered on the home turn when disappointed for a run and did not respond as he would have expected in the straight.  He also stated that “Prince Baa Baa” felt normal on pulling up.  A Veterinary examination of “Prince Baa Baa” subsequent to the race failed to reveal any abnormalities.  In the straight, “Wild Classic” was inconvenienced when tightened slightly between “Another Trick” and “Yo Yo Ma”, which shifted out slightly under pressure.

Race 8 - JEZABEEL HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

An objection was lodged by B. Prebble, rider of “Makybe Diva (GB)”, second place getter, against “Little Miss Quick”, declared the winner, on the grounds of alleged interference in the straight.  After taking evidence from the parties concerned and after viewing all videos, the Stewards upheld the objection, the amended placings being First - No. 9 “Makybe Diva” and Second - No.8 “Little Miss Quick”.  C. Newitt, rider of “Little Miss Quick” was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift out in the straight and was notified that he must stop riding and make a genuine effort to straighten his mount in similar incidents.  Approaching and passing the 1000m, “Jewel of Kingston” brushed the running rail on two occasions.  On the home turn “Shally’s Magic” was taken out by “Forlorna (IRE)” .  J. Didham, rider of “Forlorna (IRE)”, which performed below expectations, stated that the mare was never travelling well in any stage of the race and failed to respond to his riding when put under pressure rounding the home turn.   The mare, which was having a second run from a spell, may not have backed up so quickly after that first up run.  J. Didham stated that the mare felt normal upon pulling up.  A Veterinary examination of “Forlorna (IRE)” subsequent to the race revealed a sore near hind leg.  S. Laxon, trainer of  “Forlorna (IRE)” was notified that prior to the mare racing again she must produce a veterinary clearance.  A Veterinary examination of “Elathea” subsequent to the race revealed that the mare was short in front.  J. Hall, trainer of “Elathea” was notified that prior to the mare racing again, he was to produce a veterinary certificate.

Champion gallopers Sunline and Lonhro, who finished third and fourth respectively in Defier’s George Main Stakes in Sydney late last month, head the field for Saturday’s $402,000 Group One Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.

But the race is certainly no two horse contest with a number of other Group One winners in the field including La Bella Dama, Maguire, Prized Gem, Republic Lass, Sky Heights and Tully Thunder.

As well other highly credentialled entries include Distinctly Secret, Gold Lottey, Kaapstad Way, Paris Hearbeat, Spirit of Westbury, Tyrolean and Ustinov.

Tyrolean looked sharp when she galloped between races at Flemington today with the David Hall trained Royal Code. Without ever being extended by Andrew Findlay the well bred daughter of Danehill was nosed out on the line by her male compatriot in the gallop.

Sunline will have her final serious hit out for the race when she gallops at Flemington tomorrow morning at 6.30am. Regular race rider Greg Childs confirmed he will be at Flemington to partner her in her work tomorrow.

Lonhro meanwhile will be put through his paces just down the road at Moonee Valley. He hasn’t started in Melbourne since his tremendous Group One Caulfield Guineas win on the same program last year, in what at the time was described as one of the best fields the race had ever seen.

Gold Lottey, Kaapstad Way, Maguire and Tyrolean has also been entered by their respective connections in the Group Two Winning Edge Presentations Stakes (2400m) on the same day.
