They're Talking Turkey at Oakbank

Rejuvenated steeplechaser Turkey Lane is on track to capture his second $156,000 Carlton Draught Great Eastern Steeplechase (abt 4950m) at Oakbank next Monday after winning a trial at the famous jumping venue today.

Turkey Lane, an 11-year-old who won the Great Eastern in 1998, beat Shamrock Dancer by a length. The promising trial by the veteran encouraged trainer Brian Searle and jockey Gary Preston.

Searle said Turkey Lane hadn't raced until he turned five and spent 13 months out of racing after his Oakbank success five years ago.

"He fell over another horse at Warrnambool and bowed a tendon soon after and needed a long break," Searle said.

"I know he is 11-years-old but the horse doesn't and considering his age he hasn't had a lot of racing."

Local favourite Raquets, who on recent winning form would challenge for favouritism in next Monday's feature, jumped poorly in the second steeple trial, finishing 22-lengths behind the winner Voodoo Sunset in third place.

Trainer David Halliday will bring Raquets back to Oakbank on Thursday morning to school because he was disappointed with his effort, which failed to inspire confidence.

"He's a funny horse and he may have got bogged down but he is very fit and I know he is better than what we saw today," Halliday said.

"I've got to bring him back for another look around on Thursday because we need to go into the race feeling more confident than we are at the moment."

Premier Adelaide trainer Tony McEvoy produced Lance Corporal and Medipal in the hurdle trials and both gave pointers to strong winning chances this weekend.

McEvoy had intended sending Lance Corporal to Warrnambool in a fortnight for the Galleywood Hurdle but made the horse a late entry for the $94,500 Yalumba Classic Hurdle (abt 3600m) next Monday after seeing the nominations.

"It doesn't look overly strong for a $90,000 race and Lance Corporal was a winner around here last Easter in the Trial Hurdle," McEvoy said.

"It is a race I would love to win and I will have to seriously consider running him in it now on the strength of his trial this morning."

Lance Corporal ran second to the John O'Connor-trained Top Kala but was beaten only a half-head and could have easily won had he been extended by jockey Adrian Garraway.

Medipal, ridden by Shane Pateman, settled last but rounded up his rivals under mild urging to win by a widening half-length. He will start in the $30,500 Ord Minnett Sharebrokers Trial Hurdle (abt 2900m) on Saturday.

Victoria's premier jumps trainer Eric Musgrove produced five runners at the trials. He won a hurdle heat with Refugee, the fastest winner of the morning, and Wriggles ran a close second to Medipal. Super Cobra finished fourth in a hurdle division.

The Rampager and Pooky Bear led with a round to go in their steeple schools and were retired. Both galloped stylishly and took to the Oakbank fences with zeal, indicating they will be competitive in whatever Musgrove chooses to run them in - the $94,500 Von Doussa Steeple (abt 3250m) on Saturday or the Great Eastern.

BENARBER (D. Tootell) raced ungenerously and was inclined to hang out in the early and middle stages of the event.

Approaching the winning post BENARBER (D. Tootell) shifted out and clipped the heels of SALAZAR (J. Maund).

Near the 600 metres RIDE THE STORM (B. Claridge), which was inclined to lay in, shifted in and inconvenienced INTERCEPTION (NZ) (P. Gatt).

BENARBER was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 2: - CENTRE RACING HANDICAP - 1350 metres

WESTACE (N. Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly.

SOCIAL GLOW (M. Neilson) and UPMARKET STAR (C. Bryant) were both inclined to rear as when the gates opened.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres, KEETAH’S LADY (C. Lindop), which was attempting to improve inside RUN LIKE BLEVIC (J. Bowditch) became held up for a short distance when that filly rolled in under pressure.

FINNISS D’OR suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the event. Mr. P. C. Barns, trainer of FINNISS D’OR, was advised that the gelding was suspended from training for three months under ARR 53 (A).

RACE 3: - SILVERLINE SECURITY HANDICAP - 1000 metres

ST VIVANT (C. Bryant), which was inclined to rear, was slow to jump.

A CUTE CONNECTION (S. Price) was slow to jump.

Near the 700 metres, SWISS VAULT (B. Claridge) was obliged to steady off the heels of VEGAS SHOW (J. Bowditch), which shifted in.

Near the 600 metres, NORWICH (W. Kerford), which was inclined to lay away from the rail, shifted out onto VEGAS SHOW (J. Bowditch) resulting in that filly shifting away and hampering PELIAS (T. Creek), which became unbalanced for a short distance. In consequence, PURA SEDA (J. Potter) got its head up and raced greenly when being steadied.

Inside the 600 metres SWISS VAULT (B. Claridge), which was inclined to shift about, shifted in and tightened TELBON GOLD (S. Tronerud), which was obliged to ease.

Over the concluding stages QUANTUM LEAP (P. Gatt) was unable to gain clear ground.

J. Holder, the rider of THE DANZIG TRILOGY, explained he had been instructed to settle that colt behind the pace and be aware that it may over-race. He stated he had been able to carry out his instructions and his mount had travelled well until approaching the entrance of the straight. He added, after finding clear ground, he had placed THE DANZIG TRILOGY under pressure; however, it had failed to respond to his riding. Mr. J. Hall, representing Mr. D. Hall, the trainer of THE DANZIG TRILOGY, confirmed the instructions.

THE DANZIG TRILOGY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported it was lame in the off hind leg. Mr. J. Hall, representing trainer Mr. D. Hall, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required prior to accepting for a future event.

PELIAS was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the colt to be lame in the off foreleg.

RACE 4: - THE ENVELOPE SPECIALISTS PLATE - 1350 metres

OAKMART (H. Akiyama), which had got down in the float en route to the track, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon upon arrival and ruled fit to start, however, a further examination revealed the filly to be exhibiting signs of lameness in the off hind leg and as a result OAKMART was withdrawn by Stewards at 1.30 pm.

The start of this race was delayed owing to THOR’S DAUGHTER requiring farrier attention after having sprung a plate in the enclosure.

KALA CHARM (T. Barras) and THOR’S DAUGHTER (R. McLeod) were both slow to jump.

COSMIC DUDE (J. Bowditch) hung out making the turn in the vicinity of the 700 metres and continued to lay out for the remainder o the event. J. Bowditch confirmed that the gelding had hung out severely throughout the event. COSMIC DUDE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

Approaching the 600 metres, OUTBACK LAD (C. Lindop) shifted out and brushed COSMIC DUDE (J. Bowditch) on several occasions.

Near the 200 metres PAY KEYS (C. Lever) shifted in abruptly and inconvenienced COSMIC DUDE (J. Bowditch), which had commenced to weaken.

Near the 100 metres, CARLTON CONQUEST (C. Bryant) dropped his inside rein.

When questioned regarding his reasons for failing to attempt to run between BARABBA ROAD (P. Gatt) and ISLE OF GIBRALTOR (S. Price) near the 200 metres, C. Bryant explained that he had not considered the run due to his filly being inclined to lay in and in his opinion both the other runners were inclined to shift about. He stated that in order to obtain an uninterrupted run he attempted to shift to the outside of BARABBA ROAD, however, in doing so, he had dropped his inside rein resulting in the filly not improving as quickly as it otherwise might have. Stewards accepted his explanation.

RACE 5: - BONNETTS HANDICAP - 1000 metres

RALLY (J. Potter) and SANGIOVESE (S. Tronerud) both jumped away awkwardly.

Inside the 500 metres, EL DIABLO (C. Bryant) rolled in and tightened LAZING ABOUT (N. Tomizawa) taking that gelding in onto QUEEN MIDAS (R. Faehr).

Inside the 300 metres, SAVAGE ATTACK (J. Holder) became disappointed when attempting to run between EL DIABLO (C. Bryant), which shifted in under pressure, and LAZING ABOUT (N. Tomizawa), which rolled out. Shortly after SAVAGE ATTACK shifted to the inside of LAZING ABOUT and became held up for a short distance.

Approaching the 200 metres, MIGHTY RAJA (S. Price) shifted in and contacted STAND BY ME (P. Gatt) resulting in that gelding being tightened and eventually being obliged to lose its position. S. Price was reprimanded and advised to take greater care when shifting ground in the future.

Near the 100 metres, RALLY (J. Potter), when attempting to improve, shifted out onto QUEEN MIDAS (R. Faehr), which was inconvenienced

C. Bryant, the rider of EL DIABLO, reported that in the vicinity of the 200 metres he had eased his mount out of the event as he became concerned with the gelding’s action. EL DIABLO was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported that an endoscopic examination revealed the gelding had a lower respiratory tract infection. Mr. J. Gask, trainer of the gelding, advised that he had initially intended to consider retiring EL DIABLO, however, in light of the infection, would discuss its future with the owners. Mr. Gask was advised that should EL DIABLO resume racing, a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness for the gelding would be required prior to performing in an official trial. Stewards ordered a swab sample be taken from EL DIABLO.

RACE 6: - COLLEX PORT ADELAIDE GUINEAS - 1800 metres

VICKSBURG (J. Holder) shifted out on jumping away and tightened BLUE HAZE (S. Tronerud). Shortly after, VICKSBURG shifted back on to KRAVITZ (Damien Holland) tightening that gelding on to INQUISITIONAL (M. Allen).

GOLD ATTIRE (NZ) (V. Hall) shifted out taking REGAL CHALLENGER (C. Lever) onto the hindquarters of JAMEELA (S. Price) resulting in REGAL CHALLENGER losing its position.

Approaching the 500 metres VICKSBURG (J. Holder) became held up behind IMPULSIVE REALITY (P. Gatt), which commenced to weaken. In consequence, REGAL CHALLENGER (C. Lever) was obliged to steady off the heels of VICKSBURG and shifted out tightening MOUNT KOSCIUSKO (NZ) (R. McLeod).

At the entrance to the straight, MOUNT KOSCIUSKO (NZ) (R. McLeod) was tightened for room between REGAL CHALLENGER (C. Lever), which shifted out, and BLUE HAZE (S. Tronerud), which was inclined to lay in. BLUE HAZE continued to lay in under pressure in the straight.

RACE 7: - LAKEWOOD STUD STAKES - 1800 metres

At the entrance to the straight, YVONNE (J. Holder) rolled out and brushed TARCOOLA DIAMOND (V. Hall).

Inside the 100 metres, YVONNE (J. Holder) laid out under pressure and, approaching the finish, shifted out onto TARCOOLA DIAMOND (V. Hall). J. Holder was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to permit V. Hall, the rider of second placed TARCOOLA DIAMOND, and Mr. D. Lawson, trainer of that filly, to view the official footage in the straight. After doing so V. Hall lodged an objection against YVONNE (J. Holder) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference from the entrance to the straight. After considering the evidence, viewing the official footage and acting on their own observations, the objection was dismissed as Stewards were not convinced that TARCOOLA DIAMOND had been sufficiently impeded to warrant interfering with the placings.

SUBELLA, which performed poorly, was examined by the Clubs Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly had taken wind and recommended the filly undergo a caslick operation.

RACE 8: - POPE PACKAGING HANDICAP - 1450 metres

Inside the 1000 metres KELMARK (J. Maund) eased when tightened by ENFOLD (W. Kerford), which rolled in.

Gower to Kick off Sunday Shoes' Stakes Run

Talented grey filly Sunday Shoes will target the Listed KMPG and Group 3 Honda Stakes after a strong first-up win at Cheltenham Park on Saturday.

While trainer Stuart Gower is reluctant to commit to a run in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap, he is not ruling out the possibility should the filly complete her two immediate tasks.

The $75,000 Listed KMPG Stakes, over 1000m at Cheltenham Park on April 26 is next in line before backing up a week later in the $100,000 Group 3 Honda Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

"She was only half-fit on Saturday and will definitely improve on the run," Gower said. "Her best form is over 1000m and she doesn't have any trouble with 1100m but anything further sees her out."

On Saturday, Sunday Shoes beat a talented line-up of experienced sprinters, sitting just off the leader and running away to win easily with Ben Claridge in the saddle.

"She seems a lot more relaxed now and it was good to see her take a bit of a sit, because she normally just jumps and runs," Gower said. "She has pulled up super and should go well in the two lead-ups to the Goodwood. I won't rule out a start in that race but she would need to go really well in the Honda Stakes."

Meanwhile, promising filly Subella will have a wind-sucking operation this week following her defeat in Saturday's Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes. The filly raced on the pace but laboured in the straight, finishing 12th and beaten almost six lengths behind Yvonne.

Gower said the filly had wind-sucked throughout the race and would see the vets this week. He has all but aborted plans to run her in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on May 3, instead backing off and aiming her at the Listed Stuart Crystal Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on May 17 - Goodwood Handicap day.

Stewards today conducted an Inquiry into the reason for RANGERINE (D. Cleaver) falling in the vicinity of the 800 metres in Race 3 - Christies Beach Hotel/Motel / SABIS Maiden Plate at Strathalbyn Racecourse on Sunday 23rd March 2003.

Evidence was taken from D. Cleaver (RANGERINE), P. Gatt (HOT CHILLI WOMAN) and C. Bryant (RUSTIC HALO). After considering that evidence Stewards found that RUSTIC HALO (C. Bryant) shifted in near the 800 metres, at the same time as HOT CHILLI WOMAN (P. Gatt) shifted out slightly and as a result, RANGERINE (D. Cleaver), which was racing between those two horses, was tightened for galloping room, contacted the heels of HOT CHILLI WOMAN and fell.

Stewards took no action, as they deemed no rider to be solely responsible for the incident.

Kiwi Filly Out to Boost Stud Value in Lakewood

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/11347--sp-816427881.html layout=standard image=http://www.trsa.com.au/images/Horses/volksini2.JPG desc=Visiting New Zealand trainer Robert Priscott is hoping to improve the stud value of talented filly Volksini in tomorrow's Group... size=small}
Visiting New Zealand trainer Robert Priscott is hoping to improve the stud value of talented filly Volksini in tomorrow's Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes (1800m) at Cheltenham Park.
Pic courtesy Trish Dunell

The filly is a Listed race winner and Group 1 placed, where she ran third to The Jewel in the Thousand Guineas. Among her other efforts include a fourth in the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes, fourth in the Group 1 Bayer Classic, ninth behind St Reims in the New Zealand Derby and fifth behind Bramble Rose in the New Zealand Oaks.

"She's shown a lot of ability right from the start and, after running fourth in the Sires Produce at just her second start, I thought she was going to be something special," Priscott said. "But she has raced in elite company all her life and since she turned three not a lot has gone right. She has run some good races though and has the talent, which is why we've come here - to add some more Black Type to her record."

Priscott is firstly aiming the filly at tomorrow's race, before a shot at the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on May 3. A start in the Group 1 South Australian Oaks depends on her form.

"I think she is best between 1600m and 2000m, so these two races will suit her," Priscott said. "If she goes well over 2000m, then she'll stay on for the South Australian Oaks."

The filly has been kept fresh since running in the New Zealand Oaks in January, finishing fifth last start on a wet track behind Black Muscat at Tauranga. She will be ridden by Rhys McLeod and will start from barrier seven.

Meanwhile, Flemington trainer Dean Lawson is hopeful smart filly Tarcoola Diamond can return to her best form.

The daughter of Last Tycoon, with five wins and four placings from 11 starts, ran an uncharacteristic eighth last start at Moonee Valley behind Ribe in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Oaks (2040m).

It was her first go beyond 1600m and while she finished more than five lengths from the winner,
Lawson's is unconvinced she failed to run the trip out.

"With the exception of Mahogony, the Last Tycoon's aren't generally regarded as stayers," Lawson said. "But there were plenty of excuses for her last start. She copped bump after bump from about the 600m mark when sandwiched between two horses and just dropped out over the last 100m. The jury is still out whether she'll handle the trip but she's a very honest filly and I think she's much better than her last start suggests."

The filly is already a stakeswinner of the Listed Great Western Stakes at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day last year. Her only two unplaced runs have been in Group 2 company in the Edward Manifold and the Moonee Valley Oaks last start. Two starts ago she finished third behind Lashed in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes.

"I think this race is right up her alley and, as long as she goes well, she might have a try at the Schweppes Oaks (2000m)," Lawson said. "The distance again will be a query but with these three-year-old fillies you never really know until you try them."

DAYNA’S PRIDE was a late withdrawal at 2.25 pm when that gelding sustained an injury to its off hind leg at its stable.

Prior to the start STAR AGLOW (B. Claridge) and SAN QUEEN (S. Price) both broke through the gates and were quickly reined in. A veterinary examination of both horses revealed they were fit to take their places in the field.

Upon jumping away STAR AGLOW (B. Claridge) shifted out and at the same time BLUESTONE VILLA (J. Lyon) shifted in slightly resulting in SAN QUEEN (S. Price) being taken out onto KING’S CHOICE (D. Tootell), which shifted out turning the hindquarters of BLUESTONE VILLA. As a result of this incident SAN QUEEN had to be steadied from the heels of STAR AGLOW and KING’S CHOICE was tightened and hampered for a short distance.

Inside the 400 metres TOVA (K. Louca) shifted in slightly resulting in ULRICHO (K. Stra) being inconvenienced.

HENRYSEE’S GOLD (C. Lindop) was held up for clear ground for a short distance approaching the home turn.

In the vicinity of the 1000 metres WEAK ELASTIC (K. Stra) shifted in resulting in MARSCAY EARL (B. Claridge) being hampered for a short distance and taken inwards. K. Stra was advised by Stewards of her obligations when shifting ground.

Inside the 400 metres B. Vale, rider of MITOBY, took hold of that gelding when it commenced to weaken and shift ground. Shortly after REKORB (J. Lyon), which was racing on the outside of MITOBY, shifted in slightly, resulting in MITOBY clipping the heels of REKORB and dipping. J. Lyon, rider of REKORB, was advised under similar circumstances in future he would be expected to exercise more care.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres and until approaching the 100 metres REKORB (J. Lyon) was disappointed for a run due to NEAT CHANGE (J. Potter) shifting in.

Lindsay Park trainer Tony McEvoy is hoping to etch his name in the record books in at least one of the three feature races at Cheltenham Park tomorrow as the Adelaide Cup carnival gets under way.

McEvoy has 15 runners in Adelaide tomorrow, including four in the Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes, four in the Listed Lakewood Stud Stakes and three in the Listed Envelope Specialists Plate.

The three feature races have all been won by the late Colin and Peter Hayes and brother David. McEvoy is confident he has both the numbers and ammunition to add a fourth Lindsay Park trainer to the winners roll.

"We've got a lot of valuable horses and these are the sorts of races you have to target with them," McEvoy said. "They're here for Black Type and while many of them are jumping in both class and distance they are bred to handle it."

In the Port Adelaide Guineas, McEvoy saddles up Zibellino, Mount Kosciusko, Blue Haze and Jameela.

"Mount Kosciusko has always looked as though he would develop into a three-year-old stayer," McEvoy said. "He's rising in class and distance on his last start but did run a great race in the Hill Smith Stakes (same track and distance) last year. He's being aimed at the Derby.

"Jameela is going along well but I've decided to split her and Yvonne and run her against the boys. She was a little unlucky behind Yvonne last start and finished on their heels. The month between runs is a worry and she will need a bit of luck from the draw but has the ability."

"Zibellino is up in class and distance but this is an important race for him to let us know where he's at. He has a lot of ability, too. Blue Haze has been disappointing but then ran a terrific race last start - enough to warrant a go in this company."

In the Lakewood Stud Stakes, the stable prepares the unbeaten Yvonne, Lifelong Dream, Jeune Amour and Special Teams.

"You can't knock her form after winning all four starts," McEvoy continued. "She is a lightly-flshed thing though and I chose to miss the Guineas for this. She has had a month between runs and the distance is a query so it's a bit of a gamble with her.

"Special Teams is up in class and distance but this company shouldn't be out of her reach, while Lifelong Dream ran a terrific race in the Lindsay Park Guineas last year. Her form is only fair recently but I know she has the ability. Jeune Amour is going along well and should get a nice run from a good barrier."

In the two-year-old feature - the Listed Envelope Specialists Plate - McEvoy prepares three very well bred fillies - La Boisselle, Isle Of Gibraltar and Carlton Conquest.

"La Boisselle probably should have won her first two starts, then never got a crack at them last start," McEvoy said. "She will really appreciate the extra ground. Isle Of Gibraltar ran a terrific race on debut and will also handle the extra ground, while Carlton Conquest has been consistent the whole way through. She got a little lost with the blinkers on last start but was still there at the finish."

McEvoy also has eight runners at Flemington tomorrow and another three at Ascot. He hasn't had much luck recently with injury in Sydney but will soon move his sights to Brisbane after the Adelaide Cup carnival.

"We've had runners everywhere over the last few weeks but that will continue through the winter," McEvoy said. "Nothing seemed to go right in Sydney but now the focus shifts to home for the Cup carnival. We've got a few in Perth for their classic races and after Adelaide we will target Brisbane with a number of horses."

The stable are currently on 225 winners for the season, 12 ahead of schedule to break the Lindsay Park record in a season.

Consistent Adelaide juvenile Mot D’or scored his second stakes win at just start number six when he swept home for a strong win in today’s $50,250 The Envelope Specialists Plate (1350m) at Cheltenham.

Trained by leading Morphettville based horseman Leon Macdonald, the youngster by Dieu D’or cleared away from his rivals over the final stages for a one and a quarter length victory.

Two starts ago the $15,000 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale purchase scored a gutsy half length win in the listed Balcrest Stakes (1000m) at Cheltenham.

Today back to the port track the gelding, who interestingly was judged the best presented colt at the 2001 sale, sent his prize earnings soaring to over $85,000 by downing the race favourite Barabba Road, a Group Two placed, last start winner.

In a field containing too high priced Easter Yearling Sale Graduates – fourth placed Isle of Gibraltar ($310,000) and La Boiselle ($1.5 million) – the success of Mot D’or was another great result for the Adelaide sale, renowned for its great value.

Over recent years the sale has produced a number of top gallopers including today’s Rosehill star Natural Blitz, multiple Group One performer Royal Code, December’s Perth Group One winner Blevvo as well as Mot D’or’s Group One winning stablemates Umrum and Gold Guru.

Stewards today conducted an Inquiry into the urine sample taken from NOT JUDE’S CHOICE at Morphettville on Wednesday, 16th February 2003, containing the substance Ranitidine.

Trainer of NOT JUDE’S CHOICE Mr. D. G. Balfour admitted the filly had been treated with a commercial preparation for stomach ulcers, however, provided evidence that the treatment had not been administered on race day.

After considering the evidence, Stewards determined that no breach of ARR 189A (1) had occurred.
