0819sallywynne.jpg (8831 bytes)Saturday wasn't the most ideal afternoon for Sally Wynne despite riding a winner from just two mounts at Moonee Valley.

Bidaily gave Wynne plenty to smile about when that gelding scored an impressive win. The win helped erase the pain of a $200 fine she received compliments of the stewards panel.

Officials handed out the hefty fine after they discovered Wynne had a mobile telephone in her possession in the jockey's room during the day.

The Mookta gelding Bidaily, who is trained at Caulfield by Rob McGuinness, made a one act affair of the Rosemount "V" Sparkling Handicap (1514m) thrashing Bush Padre and Dot Com.

Bidaily was one of two rides for Wynne at Moonee Valley. Earlier in the afternoon she partnered the Cranbourne trained mare American Graffiti to an eighth placing.

Racing Victoria Nearing Crunch Point - Minister

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/2818--sp-123102738.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/photos/0817robhulls.jpg desc=Victoria's Minister for Racing, Rob Hulls, didn't mince words when it came to his vision for the Victorian racing industry,... size=small}
0817robhulls.jpg (42873 bytes)Victoria's Minister for Racing, Rob Hulls, didn't mince words when it came to his vision for the Victorian racing industry, given in a speech to industry participants in Melton this week.

In front of an audience including industry heavyweights such as Racing Victoria Chairman Graham Duff, its Chief Executive, Neville Fielke, Harness Racing Victoria Chairman Neil Busse and head of TabCorp's wagering division Michael Piggott, Hulls highlighted the progress made by Victorian racing under the Bracks government.

Describing thoroughbred racing as having been run by a "Flemington based mens club for 130 years" prior to Labor taking office, Hulls claimed that the previous Liberal government was on the verge of appointing a Racing Commission. Under his ministry, Racing Victoria has undergone its own reforms in terms of industry governance, but Hulls believes the process is not yet complete.

In comments clearly directed at the Racing Victoria Board, Hulls pointed out that it only had a couple of months to implement his government's preferred structure, which would rid the Board of club based representation and replace it with a body including more women and younger people.

Clearly passionate about racing, Hulls described racing as "the most enjoyable of my three portfolios". Claiming to be the only Racing Minister in Australia with his own set of silks, Hulls reminisced about his upbringing in a family where "my father raced slow horses, one grandfather was a mad keen punter and the other was an SP bookie".

Having this background it is perhaps not surprising that Hulls takes credit for what he sees as a dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of Victoria's bookmakers.

"Three years ago when we took office, bookies were going out the back door. Now we are seeing new bookmakers starting up and the numbers are growing again". He went on to say " in spite of the predictions of doom when we implemented reforms to help bookmakers, turnover of both TABCorp and bookmakers has increased".

In response to a question from the floorasking about "his plans for the Melton Harness Racing Centre of Excellence", Hulls was quick to point out that "this is not my plan - its a Harness Industry plan". He made it clear that he regarded the government's role as being to facilitate industry plans where possible, but that the racing industry had to take responsibility for its own decisions.

Hulls is proud of the fact that country people will have a greater role in racing industry decision making across all three codes as a result of his government's reforms.

"For the first time, country racing has a real say in the way racing is run".

Another initiative highlighted by Hulls is Australia's first ever study into the welfare of retired jockeys, which has led to an industry taskforce to work out ways in which jockeys can be better provided for in their retirement.

A comprehensive survey of the Victorian thoroughbred breeding industry conducted by Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria and funded by government is also high on Hulls priority list.

Looking to the future, Hulls stated that "he never saw himself as having a day to day role in running racing". He went on to say that "government has to oversight the industry on behalf of the community".

Clearly advocating a self governing role for the industry, Hulls nevertheless warned that "we do expect racing industry bodies to consult with us".

He believes that the future for the industry relies on "co-operation and collaboration". Citing the recent tri-code (thoroughbred racing, harness racing and greyhounds) meeting at Cranbourne, Hulls believes there are tremendous opportunities for the industry as an entertainment medium in competition for the leisure dollar.

Reiterating his desire to see more women and young people in decision making roles, Hulls concluded his speech by emphasising the importance of racing to Victoria. "Racing is crucial to the government of this state" he said.

Irish Hang on to Take Jumps Series

0817jonledecky.jpg (14222 bytes)A race morning scratching has cost the Australian jumping team victory in their series against Ireland with the final race being run at Moonee Valley today.

As the race turned out Australia grabbed the first two placings and 18 points, but with Ireland grabbing the final two lots of points by default they hung on for a two point win.

When Jim Houlahan scratched his five-year-old gelding Falknis the Australian team lost the ability to use the points from the winner of the Waterford Crystal Steeplechase (a3200m), Jon Ledecky.

Australia's only other runner was pulled up, therefore Ireland grabbed six points for third and fourth to score a thrilling win.

Despite the three Irish runners finishing in the last three places they got the 4 and 2 points on offer respectively for being the third and fourth placed runners in the series.

Ireland leads the overall record of the series 12 to 11. The series was drawn on one occasion.

0817belesprit.jpg (14859 bytes)Champion colt Bel Esprit is on target for a lucrative spring carnival after making a stunning return to the track with a three length demolition of a high class field in today’s listed Mitchell McKenzie Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

Having his first start since his unlucky fifth in the Golden Slipper in March, the strongly built son of Royal Academy was fast out of the barrier and from that point the result was never in danger.

Macedon Lodge stable foreman Geoff Dixon said he couldn’t have been more happier with the three-year-old'’ return.

"I was very pleased with that," Dixon said moments after the victory. "We pretty much expected him to come out and do that, but it’s just nice for it to actually happen."

Dixon has been in charge of the training of Bel Esprit, last season’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner, while head trainer John Symons has been holidaying in New Zealand. Symons returns home tomorrow.

"It’s going to be a nice welcoming home present," Dixon said with a smile.

0817belesprit2.jpg (19002 bytes)Dixon said the colt was only about "85% fit" for today and there was still plenty of room for improvement. This was reaffirmed by today’s rider Nash Rawiller.

"There’s heaps of improvement in him," Rawiller said. "He gave me a good feel during the race and he was very impressive."

Bel Esprit defied a significant betting drift in the ring, where his price "blew" from $1.50 to $2.10, to win the race in dashing style.

He will have his next start in the $125,750 Group Three HDF McNeil Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield in a fortnight before tackling the older horses in the Group One Manikato Stakes, back here at Moonee Valley. After those two races Bel Esprit will be aimed toward the Caulfield Guineas, a race connections feel is definitely within his reach.

"I’m certain he will be able to get 1600 metres," a confident Dixon said.

0817belesprit5.jpg (11212 bytes)At the post Bel Esprit held a three length advantage over the Australian bred and Hong Kong trained Able Choice, who made some handy late ground to please connections.

Trainer John Moore said after the race that the son of Lady Jakeo would head toward the Ascot Vale Stakes on his way to an expected return clash with Bel Esprit in the Caulfield Guineas.

The champion of his age in Hong Kong, Able Choice tasted defeat for the first time in his now four start career. He is owned by a brother to the Chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Of the other horses Yell managed to grab third place ahead of the previously unbeaten youngster Titanic Jack.

The result would have been an ideal result for the handicapper, if he could have claimed to have weighted the horses. However with the race being a set weight and penalty affair the placings were decided on performance and prizemoney.
