AlcopopTRSA Stewards have this afternoon interviewed Jake Stephens, the trainer of Alcopop, regarding a statement attributed to him in an article appearing in The Advertiser today.

The article reported Stephens as stating, “He’s not in the Spring Stakes to win it”.

When questioned, Stephens denied making the comment and noted that the alleged statement contradicted the general thrust of his otherwise positive comments regarding the condition of Alcopop.

He reiterated that in his opinion Alcopop had a fitness level greater than 75%.

He added that the gelding was such a good racehorse and so competitive that he would not risk it in a race if he wasn’t satisfied with its level of fitness.

He advised Stewards that Alcopop had been in work since early June and confirmed another comment that he considered, “the horse is probably a bit ahead of where he was a year ago and that will show in his coat on Saturday”.

Stephens stated that Alcopop, which has won two of three previous first up appearances, both over 1200 metres at Allan Scott Park Morphettville, had pleased him in its preparation, including recent work at Goolwa, and he had received permission to gallop Alcopop at Morphettville on Wednesday morning.

The Stewards accepted Mr. Stephens’ explanation.

The trainer acknowledged that Alcopop would be presented to race in accordance with the Rules.

The Stewards also ordered that Alcopop be examined by the TRSA Veterinary Surgeon prior to and following its gallop on Wednesday morning.

Saturday’s South Australian Grand National Steeplechase (3500m) winner Nuvolari will have one more start before retirement.

The eleven-year-old son of Aliocha will run in Sunday’s $150,000 Victorian Grand National Steeplechase (4530m) at Sandown Hillside.

Trainer Michael Trinder said Nuvolari’s future was bleak when jumps racing almost came to an abrupt end.

"This horse was finished when it looked like jumps racing was all over a couple of years back," Trinder told The Advertiser.

"Now he'll have one more run before finding a paddock for life, and that's the way it should be."

Nuvolari finished fifth two starts back at Warrnambool in the Crisp Steeplechase behind Tarawera however it was his late-closing effort at Sandown in an open steeplechase behind Juan Carlos three starts ago that Trinder will take most encouragement from.

Nuvolari & Trent WellsTrent Wells has ridden Nuvolari at his past three victories but will relinquish the reins on the Tasmanian-galloper for this Sunday’s warm favourite Tarawera.

Boasting a record of 12 wins from 68 starts, Nuvolari has accumulated $174,792 in prizemoney.

Of that, $134,630 has been registered over the jumps with an impressive record of eight wins and five placings from 21 starts.

Broadway HarmonyA midweek treble has all but turned Saturday's Morphettville meeting into a day of celebration for jockey Chad Lever.

Lever will take a four-win lead into the final meeting of the season as he prepares to go back-to-back in the Adelaide title.

He rode three winners on Thursday to ensure rival Simon Price would have to produce an unlikely last-day haul to snatch the premiership.

Lever, who has ridden 48 winners so far in 2009-10, has six rides on Saturday including a mount for Mark Kavanagh in the $80,000 Reliance Petroleum Stakes (1050m).

Kavanagh, who holds an unassailable lead in the Adelaide trainers' premiership, will saddle up Luce Del Mare in the Listed race for two and three-year-olds.

Luce Del Mare, whose two wins have been in Adelaide, is a $17 chance in first TAB Sportsbet markets.

In an open end-of-season feature, Victorian-trained two-year-old fillies Broadway Harmony and Martika share favouritism at $6.
