After Patrick Payne quinellaed the Adelaide Cup and the Great Eastern Steeplechase earlier in the year his brother, trainer Andrew Payne and sister jockey Michelle Payne continued the family tradition of winning big SA races when Haddle Macdaddle $8.50 was the one and a quarter length winner of the Listed 1600 metre Balaklava Cup on Wednesday.

Sired by Strategic from the Imperial Baron mare Imperial Stakas, Haaddle Macdaddle was last until the home turn but thundered down the straight to defeat the William Smart prepared apprentice Claudia Lions ridden Silent Sophia $31. Xaeita $7 was another short head away third for David Jolly and Simon Price.

Being well placed in the second feature race of the day the $40,000 Sprint of 1200 metres the five year old gelding Gogocanny gave his trainer Phillip Stokes and jockey Ben Claridge a nose victory.

A Canny Lad sired gelding from the Octagonal matron Polygogonal, Gogocanny $16 came with a late run to defeat the John Hickmott trained apprentice Tillie Neve ridden Taos Pleasure $26 in a head bobbing finish which had patrons equally divided as to who had won.

Get Set $8 was a farther neck away third for Richard Jolly and Paul Gatt.

Mentor Ken Sweeney scored the first leg of a double when Shot In Jest $7.50 with hoop Dean Yendall in the saddle was the one and three quarter length victor of the sixth race which was contested over 1200 metres.

From the Pompeii Court matron Romantic Jest and fathered by Regal Shot, Shot In Jest was well positioned and beat the Sue Nolan charge, the Shayne Cahill steered Hotdeal $4.80. The $3.80 favourite, The Perugian was a farther three quarter of a length away third for Mark Kavanagh and Damien Oliver.

Mentor Ken Sweeney and rider Dean Yendall brought up their double when the Mull Of Kintyre mare Visual Impact, from the Euclase mare Classy Looker, came with a strong run over the concluding stages to be the one and three quarter length winner of the 1400 metre final event.

A $7.50 chance when the starter released the field Visual Impact beat Super De Lago, the $2.50 public elect, for horse carer Mark Kavanagh and jockey Damien Oliver. The combination of Leon Macdonald, Andrew Gluyas and Clare Lindop supplied Smiling Hussy $15 who was a farther half head away third.

Opening at $15 and then being backed into $6 the Gary Kennewell trained Dominic Tourer steered Conservatorium was the four length winner of the opening event which was contested over 1050 metres.

The progeny of Royal Academy and the Belong To Me mare Belong To Madam the first starter three year old filly Conservatorium was well placed and beat the Gordon Richards trained Claudia Lions mount North Beach $151. Protector, the $1.50 favourite, was another one and a quarter lengths away taking out the third placing for Tony McEvoy and Damien Oliver.

Tony McEvoy returned to the training ranks in triumph when the Damien Oliver ridder Eikept, the $2-40- favourite, was a near all the way winner of the 1200 metre second race.

A Keep the Faith three year old gelding from the Dehere mare Mishere, Eikept scored a half length victory over the Richard Jolly trained Mark Pegus ridden Always Discreet $4.

Wotzitworth $12 was a farther one and three quarter lengths away third for John Macmillan and Simon Price.

Jockey Todd Pannell took full advantage of a on-course pick-up ride at the expense of Melbourne hoop Jason Benbow, who was late getting to the course, when he guided the Mark Kavanagh prepared Marion Bay to a two and a half length win in race three which was run over 1400 metres.

Starting the popular elect at $4.20 the Blevic sired Marion Bay, out of the Habituate mare Pascaline, came from a mid field position and beat Next Top Model $8 for mentor Phillip Stokes and apprentice Claudia Lions. The $8 returned early leader Swoopy Coupe was another short half head away third for Bill Bogarts and Dominic Tourneur.

Sired by the Australian bred entire Lonhro, from the Weasel Clause matron Nova Clause, Novahro $7 gave co-trainers Leon Macdonald and his son-in-law Andrew Gluyas and stable jockey Clare Lindop a two and a half length win in the 1600 metre fourth event.

Being well placed Novahro beat the Darren Magro cared for Simon Price steered Strum $6.50. Zaraya Rose $4.60 was a farther one and a quarter lengths away third for Phillip Stokes and Dean Yendall.

Mentor Jim Smith and rider Matthew Neilson were seen in the winner’s enclosure after the neck win of Arctic Tern $6 in the fifth event which was contested over 1600 metres.

A Catbird seven year old mare from the daughter of Nassipour, Kim Sayang, Arctic Tern continued the trend of well placed runners to win. Arctic Tern beat the Will Clarken trained Michelle Payne guided Mills Terrace $6. Last start winner Olivia Grace $4.40 was a farther two lengths away third for Paul Seater and Paul Gatt.

Haddle McDaddleNine-year-old gelding Haddle McDaddle won the $80,000 Listed Malaysia Airlines/Advertiser Balaklava Cup (1600m) on Wednesday to continue an amazing run for the Payne family in South Australia.

Trainer Andrew Payne notched up the feature race win with the aid of sister Michelle who was in the saddle.

Earlier this year, brother Patrick clinched South Australia’s premier jumps race, the Great Eastern Steeplechase (4950m) with It’s A Dud, a month after providing the quinella of the Adelaide Cup with Capecover defeating Kerdem.

Wednesday’s Balaklava meeting was well attended, with a crowd over 16,000 making the two hour trip north of Adelaide, but marred by an inside-biased track.

As a result, several riders were keen to obtain the lead at all costs with a line of five including Bonindi, Orchestra Stalls and Steel My Heart charging towards the first turn.

When the field turned for home, the leaders were quickly collared by Silent Sophia who dashed to the front only to be overhauled by Haddle McDaddle in the final 100 metres.

Haddle McDaddle ($8.50) defeated Silent Sophia ($31) by 1-1/4 lengths with Xaieta ($7) a further short head away in third.

Even Adam ($15) flew from last to finish fourth while Orchestra Stalls ($4.20 fav) boxed on tenaciously for fifth.

Wednesday’s victory underlines an amazing return to form for the son of Strategic who prior to winning at Sandown last month five weeks ago had not won a race since August 2007.

Haddle McDaddle has won three of his last four starts and accumulated over $120,000 in that period.

He now boasts a record of eight wins and 17 placings from 52 starts for over $360,000 in earnings.

Caulfield Cup Plans For Spacecraft Lift Off

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/45280-caulfield-cup-plans-for-spacecraft-lift-off.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/280810/arspacecraft.jpg desc=Caulfield Cup ambitions for classy four-year-old Spacecraft received a great boost on Saturday when he won the listed Penny Edition... size=small}

SpacecraftCaulfield Cup ambitions for classy four-year-old Spacecraft received a great boost on Saturday when he won the listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville.

An entire by Galileo, Spacecraft gave his connections plenty to cheer about when he notched his first stakes success at his second start for a new stable.

He was sent out one of the leading chances in the race after an eye catching first up effort in the recent Aurie's Star Handicap at Flemington.

New trainer Mick Price, watching from Caulfield, was impressed with the win and also the heady front running ride from Group One winning hoop Dean Holland.

"He's only an 85 rate - he was in a 1400 metre handicap here (at Caulfield) and he didn't get a run so that (in Adelaide) was our back up race," Price said.

"I've got a good opinion of him. Now being a weight-for-age winner I'm hoping his rating goes up so that he can get off the minimum in handicaps."

"I think his best distance is 2000 metres and I'm hoping it's 2400 metres."

"Hopefully I can find a 2000 metre handicap race for him and then get a run in the Caulfield Cup - that's the way I want to go."

Spacecraft, Penny Edition

"He's a lovely Galileo galloper. He's good winded. It was a really good in today."

Price was impressed with the way Dean Holland rode his four-year-old in the Adelaide feature.

"We drew 10 and I wanted to be outside the speed. And he said, what about if we lead."

Spacecraft

"I said - I'm pretty sure that will be okay because from memory he's not a stargazer when he's out in front."

"We've spent a lot of time in getting him to relax - he's a very tenacious horse when you work him with company."

Spacecraft ($4.60) cruised home to beat Magical Pearl ($11) by a length and three quarters.

Viking Turf Belle ($21) was third home, a further length and a quarter back.

Spacecraft

Xaieta ($10) was fourth ahead of last year's Melbourne Cup favourite Alcopop ($6.50) while the favourite Majestic Music ($3.20) paddled in the straight to finish seventh.

Spacecraft was purchased by senior part owner Peter Caporn for $85,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The Racetree sold youngster has already earned over $163,000, is still a colt and has Group One spring features on his radar.

Spacecraft

He certainly looks another great value buy from the Gold Coast.

Spacecraft is one of two stakes winners for his dam, the twice Perth winning Octagonal mare Demanding.

As well as Spacecraft she is the dam of the dual stakes winner and WA Derby placed Phenomenons.

Spacecraft & Dean Holland

Demanding herself is a half sister to three stakes gallopers including multiple stakes winner Victory Dash. She is from a stakes winner in Sydney as well.

Her latest yearling, a filly by Danehill's record breaking sire son Rock of Gibraltar, has been entered for the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by the team from Racetree.

GogocannyGogocanny snapped a twelve race losing streak that lasted eleven months by winning today’s $40,000 Coopers Clear Sprint (1050m) at Balaklava.

Gogocanny ($14-$16) was ridden quietly by Ben Claridge and came with the one run down the outside to defeat Taos Pleasure ($26) by a nose.

Get Set ($6-$8) finished third a further neck away and was gallant in defeat. Used out of the barriers by Libby Hopwood, the six-year-old mare raced four-wide on the speed the entire trip only to be swamped late.

Multiple Group 1 placegetter Grand Duels ($2.50 fav) finished fourth back along the rails while Periduki ($5.50) was unable to obtain the lead from his wide alley and weakened hopelessly into last.

Saratoga Dreams was fractious in the barriers prior to the start and was subsequently scratched on veterinary advice.

Trained by Phillip Stokes, Gogocanny won two of his first three races and as a three-year-old finished fifth in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).

However since then Gogocanny has struggled to live up to that early promise, boasting a modest record of four wins and four placings from 22 starts with prizemoney in excess of $140,000.

Kuitpo Blaze $7 was a farther long head away filling the minor placing for Roslyn Day and Adrian Patterson.

The engagement of the three kilogram claiming Melbourne apprentice Jacob Rule paid off for trainer Mark Minervini when his charge Addiction To Rock was the half length winner of the 1200 metre second race.

From the Blevic matron Bellediction the Rock of Gibraltar sired Addiction To Rock was well in contention and defeated the $2.60 returned The Blues for trainer David Hayes and jockey Paul Gatt.

Dane Peggy $4.80 was another four and a quarter lengths away third for Jon O’Connor and Dominic Tourneur.

The $3 favourite Produced, the No Excuse Needed sired six year old from the O’Reilly mare Ballymoon, brought up a quartet of wins in the 1200 metre third race.

Winning by a margin of three lengths, trained by Echuca based horse carer Darryl Archard and piloted by apprentice Ashley Thomson, Produced kept the winning strike rate of on pace runners going when he led all the way and beat Tictacs $12 for the combination of trainer David Hayes and rider Paul Gatt.

Exalted Thomas $14 was another three quarters of a length away taking out the minor prizemoney for Jim Smith and Simon Price.

After running two seconds and a third at his previous three outings Perillo, the $3.40 favourite, broke through for a three and a half length win in the 2250 metre fourth event for trainer James Gardiner and jockey Adrian Patterson.

A nine year old gelding sired by the American bred Perugino from the Lucky Ring matron Talent Lover, Perillo was another winner to come from the leading division.

Perillo beat the Karen Byrnes trained Clare Lindop ridden Dancing Havana $14. Mytika $20 was a farther one and a quarter lengths away in third placing for Simon Bates and apprentice Kate Dyson.

The three quarters of a length win of the Ennosta de Lago four year old mare Serenada $3.70 gave Caulfield based mentor Peter Moody and jockey Clare Lindop victory in race five which was run over 1000 metres.

Mothered by the Hurricane Sky mare River Serenade, Serenada came from a better than mid field position and posted a win over the David Jolly cared for Justin Potter steered Tresette $51.

Some Call Me Tim $4.20 was a farther three quarter of a length away third for Jon O’Connor and Kate Dyson.

Apprentice Libby Hopwood brought up her second city winner for the new season when she guided the Lloyd Kennewell prepared You Or Me to a one and a half length victory.

The More Then Ready sired mare from the Marauding mare Zena Warrior, You Or Me defied the race trend of previous winners when she came from last and defeated the Mick Price trained Jeffrey Maund mount Princess Narine the $3.30 punter’s choice.

Powderhorn Bay $13 was another long neck away third for Karen Chisholm and Dominic Tourneur.

Silent Mode, the $3.50 favourite, came from last to give trainer Paul Seater and apprentice Jordon Frew a one and a quarter length win in the 1250 metre final event.

From Zabeel mare Soundless and sired by El Moxie, Silent Mode powered home to defeat the Jeffrey Searle trained Adrian Patterson ridden Star Act $7.

Frustrating $3.60 was a farther half head away third for John Thompson and Dean Holland.

Trainer Hopes It’s Her Day At Balaklava

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/45295-trainer-hopes-its-her-day-at-balaklava.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/110709/steelmyheart.jpg desc=Heartbroken after last year’s Balaklava Cup, trainer Roslyn Day hopes to snatch her second win in the provincial feature on... size=small}

Steel My HeartHeartbroken after last year’s Balaklava Cup, trainer Roslyn Day hopes to snatch her second win in the provincial feature on Wednesday with evergreen mare Steel My Heart.

After stablemate Road Worker narrowly claimed the 2007 Balaklava Cup ahead of Keltah, Steel My Heart finished third in 2008 and a controversial second behind Alcopop in 2009.

Steel My Heart was taken out by Alcopop multiple times in the straight with the Jake Stephens-trained galloper clinching victory by only a short head.

However after a lengthy protest hearing, stewards dismissed Day’s objection much to her dismay.

“Even to this day I still watch it and in my opinion – the stewards are entitled to have their own view – but in my opinion I think she deserved the race,” Day told the Virtual Formguide.

“For a mare that’s a big loss because she would have been a listed winning horse rather than a multiple stakes placegetter.

“It makes a big difference but anyway you can’t change the past and we move on to tomorrow.”

The daughter of Gallo Di Ferro finished an uncharacteristic well-beaten sixth last start at Morphettville and Day attributes her disappointing performance to the severely rain-affected track.

“She travelled really good to the turn and then when he (rider Dominic Tourneur) asked her to let down she sort of fell in a hole,” she said.

“She’s never really seen a heavy track and at her only start before on the going she didn’t handle a heavy surface on that occasion either.

“Dead and Slow is good for her but when it starts getting into the heavy range she struggles.”

Boasting a record of ten wins and 11 placings from 43 starts, Steel My Heart has won in excess of $200,000 in prizemoney.

Her last win was registered in July 2009 but she has since managed to finish in the placings on four occasions from 11 starts.

The eight-year-old is set to have one or two more runs this preparation before being retired to the breeding barn.

Steel My Heart will be ridden by stable jockey Adrian Patterson in Wednesday’s $80,000 Malaysia Airlines/Advertiser Balaklava Cup (1600m) to be run at 4:30pm local time (5pm EST).

Beach Workout Has Alcopop Fizzing

AlcopopLast year's beaten Melbourne Cup favourite Alcopop pleased in a beach workout on Wednesday and is set to make a belated return in Saturday's Penny Edition Stakes.

Alcopop missed his scheduled first-up run in the Spring Stakes earlier this month when a scope on the Tuesday before the race revealed some mucous in his trachea.

Trainer Jake Stephens says the gelding is back on track to kick off his campaign in the Listed weight-for-age Penny Edition over 1400m at Morphettville.

Stephens worked Alcopop over 1200m in even time at Goolwa Beach on Wednesday, with his final 600m run at "a pretty strong gallop".

"It was a good hitout, I was pleased with that," Stephens said.

The six-year-old was one of the stories of last year's spring carnival winning three consecutive stakes races - the Balaklava Cup (1600m), JRA Cup (2040m) and Herbert Power (2400m) - before finishing sixth as favourite in the Melbourne Cup (3200m).

His autumn campaign, on the other hand, didn't go to plan with a virus hampering his Sydney preparation.

Jake StephensHe finished 10th in the Apollo Stakes and last in the Ranvet Stakes at his only two starts.

Stephens has had Alcopop back in work since the beginning of June preparing for another tilt at the Melbourne spring carnival and he is currently rated a $21 chance for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Jockey Dom Tourneur will continue his association with Alcopop in the Penny Edition.

"The 1400 metres is nowhere near his peak distance," Stephens said.

"He's been competitive over the trip before though and I want to see him do something, especially after the Sydney campaign."

The Penny Edition is expected to be Alcopop's only start in his home state this preparation with Stephens to shift the focus to feature races in Melbourne should all go to plan.

Another Suspension For Pateman

Steven Pateman & Regal HeirLeading jumps jockey Steven Pateman received his second suspension within eight days from TRSA stewards after an inquiry into his handling of Regal Heir concluded today.

Pateman was suspended for a month last Monday for failing a breathe test at Murray Bridge on June 14. That case is subject to appeal.

Today, South Australian stewards found Pateman guilty of incompetent riding aboard Regal Heir in the Tapestry Wines Hurdle (3200m) at Morphettville on July 24.

Stewards said that after negotiating a hurdle at the 800 metre mark, Pateman “persevered in attempting to improve inside the heels of Hula Dane when, for some distance, there was insufficient room” which “invited the reasonable prospect of Regal Heir’s momentum being impeded.

They also suggested Pateman’s tactics lacked initiative.

“He (Pateman) did not attempt an option to position Regal Heir outside the heels of Hula Dane when that position was available for a considerable distance and such attempt carried the potential to fulfil his instructions.”

With Pateman eager to ride in New Zealand late next month and the United Kingdom in early 2011, stewards suspended Pateman for the first four race meetings at which jumping events are to be scheduled in either South Australia or Victoria during 2011.

It’s unknown at this stage whether Pateman intends to lodge an appeal against this latest sanction.

Steven Pateman

Leading jumps jockey Steven Pateman has immediately lodged an appeal against a month suspension and $1,000 fine after TRSA stewards found him guilty of failing an alcohol breath test.

According to TRSA stewards, Pateman provided three breath samples over the permitted blood alcohol concentration limit of .02% at Murray Bridge on June 14.

The rider protested his innocence at yesterday’s hearing with Pateman providing the results of a negative breath test at a nearby police station an hour prior to failing three tests at the racetrack.

However stewards failed to be swayed by Pateman's evidence and he was still found guilty.

The multiple Tommy Corrigan medallist will also front TRSA stewards before 5pm tomorrow over the handling of Regal Heir in the Tapestry Wines Hurdle (3200m) at Morphettville on July 24.

Stewards are concerned with Pateman’s “apparent lack of initiative” with approximately 900 metres remaining.

Bonindi

The final field and barrier draw for Wednesday’s Balaklava Cup was released on Monday morning with topweight Bonindi drawing ideally in barrier two.

To be ridden by stable jockey Holly McKechnie, Bonindi won the $70,000 Hiskens Cup (1514m) at Moonee Valley three starts back before winning an open handicap over the mile at Morphettville last start on August 21.

Right Fong, winner over last year's Melbourne Cup Carnival, is also in the field and looms as a serious chance after his first-up fifth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) behind Rebel Raider at weight-for-age.

Other notable runners include recent Melbourne metropolitan winners Haddle McDaddle and Riceman while connections of Steel My Heart will be hoping two placings in the past two Balaklava Cups can translate into victory on Wednesday.

Fresh from partnering Toorak Toff to victory in the Golden Rose, champion jockey Damien Oliver will ride at Balaklava on Wednesday and will ride Orchestra Stalls in the feature event.
