The Penola Racing Club are on track for this years Easter Race Meeting.

In a tradition that has reigned for decades, Penola race course will host the Penola Cup this Easter Sunday. The first Penola Cup run on the present course, Yallum Park, was in 1903, 100 years ago, so this years race will have special significance.

Club President, Geoff Berkin, is quietly confident that the local community will really get behind this years Penola Cup meeting, 100 years after it was first competed, for and he expects a good number of visitors to the Coonawarra area over the Easter break will make the effort to enjoy a great day at the races, once deemed one of the social events of the year.

The day has always been promoted as a family day and this years event is no exception. We have it on good authority that the Easter Bunny will be making an appearance before heading home from a busy night of delivering Easter Eggs to the children of Penola. Armed with plenty of goodies for the children, and assisted by a clown, the Easter Bunny is sure to be a hit. Add to that the band that will be playing on course and the day is set.

There will also be two face painters on course to brighten up the faces of the children even further and if that's not enough there will be a Merry-go-Round and competitions for the children to win some very special prizes. All of these activities are "free" so grab your children, their cousins and friends and head to Penola race course this Easter Sunday.

For the purist, the racing on a course rated the best it has ever been by Chief Adelaide Steward, Graham Loch, promise to be exciting.

With some good Open gallopers trained throughout the Limestone Coast and some Victorian horses expected to sneak across the border in an attempt to "steal the silverware", the battle for the 100th Cup will be torrid.

So, the place to be this Easter Sunday, the 20th April, is the Penola race course for the annual Family Day race meeting and to witness the Penola Cup, first competed for 100 years ago.

The Adelaide Cup Carnival will see the reemergence of the smart O’Reilly mare The Big Chill (NZ).

After spelling for six months due to injury The Big Chill is now under the care of Brian Mayfield-Smith and the Victorian trainer has targeted the $A100,000, Group 3, Honda Stakes, 1100m at Morphettville on May 3rd as her first run.

A bold showing from The Big Chill (ex Icy Calm, by Western Symphony) would see her progress to the $A300,000, Group I, Honda Goodwood Hcp, 1200m also at Morphettville on May 17th, 2003.

The Big Chill was previously placed in the Goodwood Hcp when she was third last year. Her record includes two wins including the Listed VRC Cadbury Roses Stakes and further places in the Group II SAJC Yallambee Classic and Listed STC Darby Munro Stakes.

The Big Chill returning to the racetrack will not add to the pedigree page of the bay filly by Stravinsky out of Icy Calm in time for her sale at the Wn Inglis & Son Australian Easter Sale commencing next Tuesday April 22nd. Lot 147 from the draft of Waikato Stud however has claims of her own apart from the exciting success already of The Big Chill.

Icy Calm won five races including the Listed VRC Maribyrnong Trial and certainly her speed was inherited by The Big Chill. Of the three to race out of Icy Calm two have won on the track. This is the family of Bradman, Rancho Ruler and Distinctly Secret.

Waikato Stud are very pleased with the Stravinsky filly and describe her as an outstanding type and sure to attract plenty of attention in her own right.

Rail: True

RACE 1 : smoke-free MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres

GUNDOOEE STAR, which dislodged its rider S. Price and sustained a heavy fall in the mounting yard, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled unfit. Acting on that advice GUNDOOEE STAR was withdrawn by Stewards at 12.10 pm. Mr. D. Jolly, the Trainer of GUNDOOEE STAR, was advised that should that gelding behave in a similar manner in future, action will be taken against it.

The start of this race was delayed owing to PAPA ROACH (S. Tronerud) proving difficult to load. Mr. J. Barns, the Trainer of the gelding, was advised that a repetition of its unruly behaviour would lead to action being taken against it.

Near the 900 metres ABOYEUR (J. Maund), which was inclined to race keenly, was obliged to steady off the heels of CHUCHRAN (C. Bryant), which shifted in.

RACE 2 : MALAYSIA AIRLINES/SABIS DISTANCE CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 2000 metres (Outer track)

Approaching the 700 metres PHANTASMIC (J. Bowditch) became held up for a short distance.

Inside the 500 metres PHANTASMIC (J. Bowditch) was tightened by DANCING LIGHTS (C. Lindop), which rolled out, and FULFILMENT (B. Claridge), which shifted in. B. Claridge was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

In persisting in holding his position, PHANTASMIC (J. Bowditch) was taken in slightly and inconvenienced DANCING LIGHTS (C. Lindop).

SADLER JOH, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding had a lower than expected heart rate.

RACE 3 : YALUMBA/SAIBS THREE-YEAR-OLD FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE - 1300 metres (Inner track)

DANIELLE’S MIESQUE (J. Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, contacting HOT CHILLI WOMAN (C. Bryant).

Approaching the turn off the back straight DANIELLE’S MIESQUE (J. Bowditch) commenced to race ungenerously, got its head up and shifted off the track. Shortly afterwards, approaching the 900 metres, DANIELLE’S MIESQUE shifted back and tightened GUIDELIGHT (M. Neilson), which had improved to its inside.

MAD MAWZIE lost its off hind plate during the race.

MAYGAZR was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported that filly to be sore in the near side knee. Mr. B. Brook, the Trainer of MAYGAZR, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before the filly was accepted for a future event.

RACE 4 : ATKINS PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1250 metres (Inner track)

SUPER TALISMAN (NZ) (B. Vale), reared as the gates opened.

Approaching the 800 metres CENTAOS (D. Tootell) was obliged to steady off the heels of CHAPEL ROYAL (S. Price) as the pace of the race slackened. In consequence SUPER TALISMAN (NZ) (B. Vale) got its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance.

When questioned regarding his riding of KULCURNA in the vicinity of the 400 metres, J. Lyon explained that he had considered the option of making ground around the field to the outside of LET IT BE (J. Maund), however, due to the position of that runner, he had considered that he would have to restrain his mount and lose ground to effect that option. He stated that instead he had elected to hold his position, however, near the 200 metres was obliged to shift to the outside in an attempt to find clear running.

Inside the 200 metres KULCURNA (J. Lyon), in attempting to improve, shifted out onto DONATONI (N. Tomizawa) tightening that gelding onto LET IT BE (J. Maund), resulting in DONATONI being forced to check. J. Lyon was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and was suspended for a period to commence at midnight on Monday, 21 April and to conclude at midnight on Wednesday, 30 April 2003; a period of four meetings.

CHAPEL ROYAL lost its off hind plate during the race.

Subsequent to the race, KULCURNA was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the mare had sustained a laceration to the near hind fetlock.

RACE 5 : POPE PACKAGING CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1400 metres (Inner track)

ON THE NATCH (K. Louca) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and brushed LEADER’S PRIDE (J. Bowditch).

Near the 100 metres DRACONIAN (C. Buchiw) shifted out onto LEADER’S PRIDE (J. Bowditch) resulting in that gelding being obliged to steady off the heels of MARLBOROUGH GIRL (B. Claridge), which shifted in.

Approaching the finish MARLBOROUGH GIRL (B. Claridge) shifted in onto DRACONIAN (C. Buchiw) at the same time as SHEZA RIPPA (J. Holder) shifted out onto TOAST TO LENNY (N. Tomizawa) resulting in DRACONIAN and TOAST TO LENNY being tightened together.

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to permit C. Buchiw, the rider of DRACONIAN, to view the official footage over the concluding stages. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

RACE 6 : HONDA HANDICAP - 1600 metres (Outer track)

Shortly after jumping GREY DESERT (N. Tomizawa) knuckled severely.

For some distance approaching the 1100 metres MISTER MANDEREE (B. Claridge), which was attempting to hold its position, laid out onto BILLY RASCAL (W. Kerford), which was attempting to shift in. W. Kerford was advised of his obligations when attempting to shift ground.

ZIP INFATUATION suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the event. Mr. R. Huxtable, the Trainer of ZIP INFATUATION, was advised that the gelding was now suspended from racing for a period of three months in accordance with ARR 53A.

RACE 7 : STUART CRYSTAL/SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1650 metres (Outer track)

THUNDER CLAPS (S. Tronerud) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out hampering BELL’S SPIRIT (J. Lyon).

Shortly after the start SCHLOSS (W. Kerford) shifted out and contacted CHEYENNE SILVER (C. Buchiw).

THUNDER CLAPS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported slight lameness in the off foreleg. Mr. J. Cornell, representing Mr. A. McEvoy, gave an undertaking to further investigate the gelding’s condition and report to Stewards.

CLASSICAL ROCK, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported slight lameness in the off foreleg. Mr. M. Minervini, the Trainer of CLASSICAL ROCK, undertook to investigate the condition more thoroughly and report to the Stewards.

RACE 8 : MARSH CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1000 metres

GOLD ANTHEM (H. Akiyama) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, inconveniencing GLORY MARCH (J. Bowditch).

On jumping away POP’S TAURUS (W. Kerford) shifted out and brushed JEMOON (C. Bryant).

GOLD ANTHEM lost its off fore plate during the event.

GOLD ANTHEM, which performed poorly, was subjected to an endoscopic examination which revealed the filly had pharyngitis. Mr. J.T. Hall, the Trainer of GOLD ANTHEM, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness would be required before the filly is accepted for in any future event.

Tony's Girls Set to Clash After Feature Adelaide Wins

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/6917--sp-1366762663.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/0414jameelawins.jpg desc=A gamble to split talented fillies Yvonne and Jameela in last Saturday's two feature races at Morphettville paid off handsomely... size=small}

A gamble to split talented fillies Yvonne and Jameela in last Saturday's two feature races at Morphettville paid off handsomely for trainer Tony McEvoy.

McEvoy didn't want to run both horses in the Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes against each other, worried that it may cost one of the fillies valuable stakes earning leading up to the important dual Group 1 Oaks.

So he decided to run Jameela against the colts and geldings of the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas.

Not only did Jameela win the race convincingly and ensure a start in next month's Group 1 Schweppes Oaks, but the stable landed the dream double with Yvonne hanging on and surviving a protest to win the feature race.

"It was a great result," McEvoy said. "It was a bit of a gamble running Jameela against the boys and it was also a gamble missing the Guineas with Yvonne and saving her for the Lakewood. But we got the result we wanted - a stakes win for both and now plenty of options leading up to the Oaks."

"Jameela showed she is on target for the Oaks, and Yvonne showed a lot of courage to fight back after being headed to win. She showed she can stay and will only improve on the run. It was a great ride by Jason Holder to give her every chance to right the trip right out."

McEvoy has reported both fillies have pulled up well since the run, and they will join stablemate Milanova, who ran fourth at Flemington on Saturday over 1800m, in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville on May 3.

"Milanova ran well on Saturday and the 2000m will be ideal for her now," McEvoy continued. "They are the three main ones I'll be looking at for the Oaks. But there's also a possibility one of them might run in the Derby too."

Mount Kosciusko and Blue Haze, who finished seventh and ninth behind Jameela respectively, will now target the Listed Veuve Clicquot Stakes (2000m) at Morphettville on May 3 leading up to the Derby.

"While they finished out of the placings I was happy with their respective runs," McEvoy said. "Mount Kosciusko is an out and out stayer and will only improve with more ground. He got too far back but did work home well. Blue Haze found a lot of trouble in the run so I wasn't too disappointed. He'll improve too so we've got a lot to look forward to from a three-year-old perspective."

Kravitz Impresses Symons in Derby Lead Up

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/18512--sp-478245179.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=John Symons' decision to miss last year's VRC Derby with talented three-year-old Kravitz may reap dividends in next month's Group... size=small}
John Symons' decision to miss last year's VRC Derby with talented three-year-old Kravitz may reap dividends in next month's Group 1 Malaysia Airlines South Australian Derby (2500m).

Kravitz ran fourth, beaten less than half-a-length, behind Live Theatre in last year's Geelong Derby Trial but avoided the Derby. Symons may reap the rewards of that decision as the gelding looks on track for a tilt at the South Australian Derby at Morphettville on May 10.

He is bouyed by the superb effort of Kravitz in last Saturday's Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) when runner-up to classy filly Jemeela.

Kravitz, a half-brother to Group 1 winner and South Australian Group 3 winner Rustic Dream, settled well back in the race but made up many lengths in the straight to be beaten just over two lengths.

"I was really impressed with his run on Saturday given he was second-up," Symons said. "He made up a lot of ground on the leader and will strip much fitter for the run."

"He ran a good race in the Geelong Derby Trial but we took an easier option with him then sent him to the paddock. I didn't think he was mature enough to tackle the three-year-olds in the spring but he's been aimed at the Derby in South Australia since then and looks on target after his run on Saturday.

"He'll run next in the Veuve Clicquot Stakes then the Derby, but he'll also be entered for the Cup. He's always shaped as a stayer and will keep getting better the further he goes."

The Listed Veuve Clicquot Stakes (2000m) is run at Morphettville on May 3 - a week before the Derby on May 10. The smoke-free Adelaide Cup is nine days later on May 19.

"He's pulled up well since the run and has returned home because he appreciates the country atmosphere here but will return in the next fortnight."

Symons was also going to bring stablemate Great Anna over for the Oaks but reported she has pulled up with a fetlock problem after a disappointing run at Flemington on Saturday. A decision on whether he will abort that trip hinges on how she recovers. Symons also confirmed Bel Esprit will bypass the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap to run in the $1 million Group 1 The Galaxy in Sydney over Easter.

Nominations for three of South Australia's five Group 1 races closed yesterday - the $250,000 Schweppes Oaks (2000m), the $250,000 Feltex Carpets SA Oaks (2500m) and the $300,000 Malaysia Airlines SA Derby (2500m).

Included among the Oaks nominations are talented fillies from both Australia and New Zealand.

Lee Freedman is represented by three fillies, including Group 2 Moonee Valley Oaks winner Ribe, who finished fourth last weekend in the Group 1 Arrowfield Stakes at Rosehill. Golden Slipper winning trainer Graeme Rogerson has entered consistent filly Lashed, a dual stakes winner at last year's Adelaide Cup carnival and winner of the Group 2 Kewney Stakes, along with a placing in last year's Group 1 VRC Oaks.

Gai Waterhouse's stakes winner Bumptious represents the leading trainer - a multiple Group placegetter, while John Hawkes has nominated Hierogram, a Group 2 winner of the Wakeful Stakes in the spring, among his big team.

Promising Victorian Sound Action, a winner of five of her six starts and an easy winner at Flemington last weekend, joins another Victorian Tarcoola Diamond, who finished a nose runner-up in last Saturday's Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes at Cheltenham Park.

Local runner's include stablemates Yvonne and Jameela - both stakes winners last weekend.

The promising fillies Jumble, from the Murray Baker stable, and Etoile Du Nord, in the Roger James camp, are among the nominations from New Zealand trainers, joining Volksini, who is already stabled in South Australia representing Group 1 winning trainer Robert Priscott.

The Schweppes Oaks is at Morphettville on Saturday May 3, while the Feltex Carpets SA Oaks is at Morphettville on Saturday May 17. The combined Oaks nominations total 150 - up 39 on last year's entries.

In the Malaysia Airlines SA Derby, local staying star Hydrometer, prepared by Leon Macdonald, is among a strong contingent of entries. Hydrometer was a stakeswinner at last year's carnival and has since gone on to win at stakes level in the spring, along with his narrow defeat in last year's VRC Derby.

Lee Freedman will be represented by Group 1 placegetter Mummify, while stablemates Converge and Gallic, in the Brad Marzato stable, were both easy winner at Flemington last Saturday.

From the West, trainer of Northerly Fred Kersley has entered last start Melvista Stakes winner Shirazamatazz, while New Zealand will be represented with the likes of Woburn - a last start Group 3 winner and placegetter in the NZ Derby.

Locally promising filly Jameela, a winner against the colts and geldings in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas last weekend, is among the big team entered from Lindsay Park.

The Malaysia Airlines Derby is run at Morphettville on Saturday May 10. Nominations last year totalled 71, while this year a total of 99 entries were received.

Priscott Tips Improvement form Volksini

New Zealand filly Volksini will improve for next month's $250,000 Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville, according to Te Awamutu trainer Robert Priscott.

The filly, a Group 1 placegetter in New Zealand, was luckless in finishing seventh behind Yvonne in last Saturday's Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes (1800m) at Cheltenham Park.

Ridden by Rhys McLeod, the filly was trapped three and four wide, even wider on the turn, before battling on in the straight to be beaten just under three lengths.

"I was disappointed with the result, not so much the run," Priscott said. "She was wide throughout and a lot further back than expected and it's also hard to make up ground when you're out deep and the leader has stacked them up and sprinted away."

Priscott now has three weeks to have the filly right for the first of two Group 1 Oaks.

"She travelled over on the Friday and raced the next day and seemed a little tired," Priscott said. "She has pulled up well though and we've now got three weeks for her to settle in for the next Oaks. Whether she runs in the South Australian Oaks will depend on how she goes next start."

Priscott said the daughter of Volksraad will have an easy week before a couple of strong gallops in the fortnight leading up to the Schweppes Oaks.
