Sink or Swim for El Diablo?

One of South Australia's most exciting gallopers El Diablo gets the chance to score his first Melbourne win when he clashes with a group of proven sprinters in tomorrow's listed $75,500 JRA Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

A lightly raced five-year-old son of El Moxie, El Diablo hit the headlines in February 2001 and gained national cult status before he even had his first start.

As a young unraced horse the gelding took fright when being exercised at an Adelaide beach (by comeback apprentice Cheree Buchiw), getting rid of his rider and bolting into the ocean, where he had to be "rounded up" by a dinghy boat as fears raised for his safety.

The gelding is trained by Jeremy Gask, one of the state's most respected and talented horsemen at Goolwa, an hours drive south of Adelaide.

El Diablo will be having only his sixth run at Caulfield tomorrow and his first since a runaway six and a quarter length win in Adelaide in March last year.

8eldiablo.jpg (18295 bytes)

Interestingly his previous start brought up a handy second placing to his rival and proven stakes winning sprinter Prince Rubiton in last year's running of the JRA Stakes.

Steven King, who rode Caulfield better than anyone during the spring carnival, has been engaged to ride El Diablo. The pair will jump from barrier seven in a field of eleven.

The hardest for El Diablo to beat appear to be Prince Rubiton, Irish Pride and Don't Tell Tom.

There is also plenty of other Adelaide interest in the race with the Victoria Derby runner-up Hydrometer resuming. Top jockey Damien Oliver was recruited to ride the son of Geiger Counter for Leon Macdonald. Hydrometer is being aimed at the Group One AJC Derby, a race won in the past by another Macdonald trained son of Geiger Counter, Gold Guru.

Swettenham Day a Must at Morphettville

South Australian racing goes into overdrive this Saturday with the running of the $250,000 Group 2 Swettenham Stud Stakes and $100,000 Group 3 CentreRacing Tokyo City Cup.

Hot on the hooves of the weekend’s top notch action is the $400,000 Channel 7 Magic Millions Adelaide 2-year-old Classic, SA’s joint richest race.

"Outside of the Carnival, no period of racing reaches the heights we will enjoy over the next 10 days." Exclaims Steve Ploubidis, the SA Jockey Club Chief Executive.

"We are expecting some of the country’s most exciting gallopers to be in town, as well as some of the leading riders. The Swettenham Stud Stakes has long been regarded as one of the best races in South Australia and this year’s field looks set to emphasise that further."

Likely starters include Group 1 winning New Zealander, Our Egyptian Raine, the lightly raced Lee Freedman trained, Dama de Noche and the talented Fair Embrace.

The Swettenham Stud Stakes, shares its billing with the Tokyo City Cup, a race that has always been a favourite with racegoers with plenty of family entertainment scheduled.

"This is the ninth running of the Tokyo City Cup, a race that was developed to encourage goodwill between the Cities of Adelaide and Tokyo. There is a reciprocal race, the Adelaide City Cup, run at Ohi Racecourse in Tokyo every year in September. " Ploubidis continues.

The quality of the sport on show should entice racing fans to the track, as should a new trackside innovation.

"We’re all set to begin our live trackside hosting this weekend, with interviews of jockeys, trainers, owners and racing personalities before and after races. This should add enormously to our patron’s level of entertainment, as well help boost the profile of many local industry participants."

"Also, for a bit of fun, bearing in mind the Swettenham Stud Stakes is all about the fillies, we’re running a special promotion. Every female attending the races on Saturday will be provided with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. That should help get them off to a winning start!" Steve Ploubidis concludes.

Event: Swettenham Stud/Tokyo City Cup Day

Date: February 15 2003
Admission: $11.00 Concessions: $5.50, U18: Free

Mr. Gower confirmed that he had spoken to a reporter on the Tuesday and had stated that SWISS VAULT was nominated for two events. He advised that at that time he had preferred starting SWISS VAULT in the Class 1 event, rather than the 3-year-old event and had commented that he would prefer to attempt to have the filly ridden off the pace. He had, instead, accepted for the 3-year-old event. Due to an apparent lack of pace in this field, he had instructed Jockey B. Claridge to be aware of the pace of the race in the early stages and use his own initiative. Stewards confirmed these instructions with the rider.

After considering Mr. Gower’s explanation, Stewards took no further action.

The Adelaide Advertiser reports today that one of the two South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) female representatives has lodged a complaint with authorities after alleging sexual discrimination and harassment.

Judy Morton, one of the state's most recognisable former breeders and racehorse owners, has filed a report to the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Rachel Hancock reports that the commission has confirmed it received the complaint on January 24 and was currently investigating the matter.

"I just think the whole thing is sad," Ms Morton told Hancock.

"I will do anything for that jockey club but I will not be humiliated," she added.

Morton made history in mid-1996 when she became the SAJC's first female committee member in its long history.

Steve Ploubidis said he had not been advised about the complaint when contacted by the newspaper and he declined to comment to the reporter.

SA Bookmakers' League chief executive John McBain, one of the state's most highly regarded industry members, came out in support of Morton.

"I think she's a lady that has the guts to stand up and say what she thinks and to cop it sweet when she is wrong," he said.

"She's honest, sincere and, from the racing side of things, you couldn't ever doubt her commitment," McBain added.
