The $250,000 Group 2 Swettenham Stud Stakes for Fillies and Mares to be run over 1200 metres at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday 15 February 2003 is set to attract a number of outstanding nominations.

Confirmed nominations for the event include Group 1 winning sprinting mare from New Zealand EGYPTIAN RAINE, winner of the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Auckland on New Year's Day and narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Telegraph Sprint at Wellington New Zealand last Saturday; high quality sprinting mare FAIR EMBRACE, which was also narrowly beaten in both the Railway and Telegraph. FAIR EMBRACE is a former Group 2 winner in Australia; LIBIDINIOUS now trained by Gai Waterhouse will return to Adelaide for the Swettenham Stud Stakes having tasted success in Adelaide in 2002 by winning the Group 3 Honda Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap. LIBIDINIOUS in two starts for the Waterhouse stable has won the Listed Carrington Stakes at Randwick and ran second in the Group 2 Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley on Thursday 24 January 2003.

Consistent and under-rated Victorian mare SPECIAL GRANGE trained by Rod Symons at Bendigo is another likely visitor for the Swettenham after an impressive win at Moonee Valley in good mares company last week. SPECIAL GRANGE is the winner of three of her past six outings and has been narrowly beaten in a number of Group and Listed races during the Melbourne Spring.

Dan O'Sullivan's COSMIC STRIKE, a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placegetter from the Melbourne Spring Carnival is expected to return to Adelaide for the Swettenham after racing at Flemington on Saturday 1 February. Greg Eurell's consistent mare PRINCESA is also likely to head to Adelaide for the Swettenham after contesting the same Flemington race.

A number of local Adelaide hopefuls will step out this Saturday in the R N Irwin Stakes including Melbourne Spring Carnival winner EMPRESS WALTZ, David Balfour trained AGALIA and Gary Kennewell's STAR HIT. Mark Minervini's filly RED LABELLE was third in a Listed event at Caulfield on Australia Day holiday and is also a likely Swettenham contender. Leading trainer Leon Macdonald has indicated that the well performed RAJA LANE is a potential Swettenham runner.

Nominations for the Swettenham Stud Stakes officially close on Monday 10 February 2003.

Regal Kiss Hoping to Bow Out a Winner

Mother-to-be, Regal Kiss, is hoping to bow out of racing on a high note with a win in this Saturday's $70,000 R A Irwin Stakes at Morphettville.

A brilliant winner of last year's Irwin Stakes, Regal Kiss will be lining up for the last time on Saturday, as she is in foal to Giant's Causeway.

Trained at Morphettville by Leon Macdonald, the Royal Academy four-year-old has been a model of consistency throughout her 17 start career, winning six races with four placings and stake earnings of in excess of $310,000.

Regal Kiss's major victories apart from her 2002 Irwin success include the Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial at Rosehill, where she defeated the cream of Australia's sprinting fillies, the Listed Dequetteville Stakes and the Listed Balcrest Stakes at Morphettville.

However, perhaps her best run came in defeat when she finished an unlucky seventh after being slow away and blocked for a run in the 2001 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill behind Ha Ha.

"I think she should have won the Slipper given any luck" Macdonald said. "She's just a super little mare with so much ability but plagued with so many problems. She's the best two-year-old I've trained, nearly the best horse I've trained."

Saturday's R N Irwin Stakes promises to be a great clash, with acceptors including Victorian visitors Bomber Bill, Super Elegant, a last start Caulfield winner, promising fillies Crest Of Gold and Crystal Decanter, as well as top locals Lazing About and Empress Waltz.

Now Gai's Hunting Millions Glory in Adelaide

r2gaiwaterhouse.jpg (11657 bytes)Leading trainer Gai Waterhouse will be hunting Magic Millions glory of another style next month when she hunts her first Adelaide 2YO Classic at Morphettville.

Waterhouse, currently in New Zealand at the Karaka Yearling Sales on the outskirts of Auckland, will use a juvenile race in Sydney on Saturday as a final lead up for her Adelaide Classic challenger.

Spur Me On, a $35,000 purchase at last year's Gold Coast Magic Millions sale, is sure to start one of the favourites in Saturday's Sydney event as he prepares for a trip west.

Waterhouse stable representative Steve Dennett said Gai would be sending Spur Me On to Adelaide after he earned his place with an impressive last start city win.

"He ran a really good race on debut when he was just beaten," Dennett reported this morning. "And the blinkers certainly worked the trick at his next start when he bolted in."

At his most recent start the gelding by Flying Spur down Safety by a length and a half in an 1100 metre event at Rosehill. The Hawkes trained Safety franked that form by winning in Sydney last Saturday.

"Spur Me On will run here in Sydney on Saturday," Dennett added. "And that should have him in great shape for the Adelaide Magic Millions."

Dennett said Waterhouse was very much looking forward to the Adelaide Classic, the richest juvenile event run outside of the Eastern States, carrying a purse of $400,000.

"Gai will be down there for the race and the sales," he said. "So let's hope Spur Me On can perform well."

Spur Me On, who was offered at the 2002 Magic Millions Sale by Yarraman Park (as agent), is one of thirteen entries for Saturday's $50,000 Flotilla Handicap over 1100 metres at Rosehill.

2comeonrorywins.jpg (19925 bytes)

Evergreen juvenile siring sensation Rory's Jester was represented by his 529th individual winner when Come on Rory raced into Magic Millions Classic contention in Adelaide on Saturday.

Having just her first start the stunning bay filly settled just behind the leaders in the Jayco Handicap (1000m) before racing past them in the straight in great style.

Purchased by Mark Pilkington at the 2002 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale for just $35,000 the filly a member of the in form Tony McEvoy stable at Lindsay Park in South Australia's picturesque Barossa Valley.

McEvoy was impressed with the filly's win and is looking forward to her running in next month's $400,000 Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Morphettville.

"She won't have another run in between," McEvoy reported. "Her win was very strong and I'm sure she has a bright future."

2comeonrory.jpg (22789 bytes)

If Come on Rory does manage to win South Australia's richest juvenile event she would join a growing list of Rory Jester progeny to star in Magic Millions events.

Catnipped broke the race record when she beat a crack field in the 1998 Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast and only last year the brilliant Wyndam Glory was triumphant in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in Perth.

A Golden Slipper winner on the track, Rory's Jester is now best known as one of the country's most popular and proven sires. He is the sire of no less than 69 stakes winners and 64 stakes performers. He has an incredible 16 per cent stakes performers to named foals - a statistic unrivalled by long term sires in Australia.

H. McKechnie, rider of CAPELLA BELLE, was questioned regarding her ride over the final 400 metres. H. McKechnie explained that CAPELLA BELLE had proved difficult to ride during the race as it had shown a tendency to hang in badly, and when she attempted to shift out just prior to the home turn, the mare had failed to respond to her riding and continued to lay in behind the leading two horses. H. McKechnie further explained, she attempted to shift out again shortly after straightening but had then been held up for a run inside BAYZAM (P. Marks). H. McKechnie further advised she had only been able to obtain clear run just prior to the finish line. H. McKechnie was advised Stewards would note her explanations.

RACE 8 – KEVIN NEALE PANEL SHOP / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE – 1300 metres

Trainer Mr. R. Gilcrist was advised that a warning had been placed on KEEP IT in relation to its barrier manners, as the mare stood flat-footed at the start and as a result lost considerable ground.

Near the 400 metres TE MOANA (N. Mehmet) shifted in slightly and as a result ANTATAQ (G. O’Loughlin) had to be steadied and shifted abruptly to the outside of that gelding, causing SIMBI KALA (K. Walters) to be taken wider. Shortly after, SIMBI KALA shifted back in and as a result KEEP IT (D. Yendall) had to be steadied for a short distance. No blame was attributed to any one rider, however G. O’Loughlin and K. Walters were advised to take more care in future when shifting ground.

But it's not the first time the Barossa Valley based senior rider has dominated a program. Price himself thinks it was the fifth such occasion he'd scored five wins.

"I've done it before in the city as well as Balaklava and Gawler," Price told Cyberhorse today. "But day's like yesterday are great there's no doubt about that."

Price teamed up with Lindsay Park's Tony McEvoy to ride four winners with the previously unraced two-year-old Fragmentation clearly the best of his victors.

The leading senior hoop was also aboard the promising filly Living Spirit in her debut at Murray Bridge and he drew comparisons between the two when quizzed.

"She is a very exciting young filly," Price said of the daughter of Snippets. "The other horse got to within about half a length from us and then she just quickened and cleared right away."

On the line Fragmentation scored by a widening eight lengths and her time of 58.3 seconds was impressive considering the ease of her victory.

"There's little doubt there are better wins in store for her (Fragmentation)," Price added. "Living Spirit also won in similar style at Murray Bridge and I think they are very similar. Since her first run there Living Spirit has gone to Melbourne and had a win and a placing."

Fragmentation is set to have her next run in the $400,000 Magic Millions Adelaide Classic at Morphettville on February 19.
