Talented Victorian jockey Darren Gauci escaped serious injury after a terrfying fall at Moonee Valley today.

Gauci was catapulted to the turf when his mount Paris Rock suffered fatal injuries in a fall in the early stages of the Carlton Draught Flying (1000m).

Luckily Gauci escaped serious injury, but he was still unable to ride Old Man later in the afternoon after complaining of shoulder soreness and general bruising.

A winner of five races, Paris Rock was destroyed.

Meanwhile, today's head steward Terry Sharp said no action was taken against any rider in the incident.

"Brian Cox's horse (Curragh Star) raced erratically and we will be speaking to him about it," Sharp said. "But Kerrin McEvoy did everything possible to help Darren Gauci."

Industry Working Hard to Solve Pubtab Dispute

In a move that demonstrates the commitment of the Victorian Racing Industry (VRI) to resolving the current PubTAB’s dispute, Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) presented a resolution proposal to PubTAB operators in talks with the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) last night.

RVL Chief Executive Officer Neville Fielke said his discussions last night with AHA representatives were open and productive and he remains positive that a solution to the current issue can be reached providing that cooperation between all parties (VRI, AHA, TABCORP and Sky Channel) is maintained.

‘We want to see this dispute resolved to the benefit of the punter, first and foremost. However, as we have stated before, any solution put forward must address the needs of the hardship PubTAB operator in country Victoria as a priority," Fielke said.

"Any suggestion that there is a ‘one-size fits all’ solution to this dispute is simplistic and is not workable as there is no such thing as an average PubTAB."

"Whilst we are still finalising the detail on the proposal, the VRI is pleased to have put a broad proposal outline to the AHA that is geared towards long term benefits and a fundamental assessment of the distribution network – we are not interested in a "band-aid" fix," said Fielke.

The AHA gave a commitment to consider the proposal put forward by RVL on behalf of the Victorian Racing Industry and consequently agreed to move the switch-off deadline until later in October.

‘We are grateful for the cooperation of the AHA last night and this evidence of their commitment towards resolving this issue in the best interests of all parties," Fielke said.

"Along with the AHA, I also look forward to positive outcomes from forthcoming meetings and a summit of all parties scheduled within the next fortnight," Fielke said.

VRI remains determined to keep the communication lines open and will write to all PubTAB operators in Victoria with a broad outline of the proposals which were put to the AHA last night. This communication comes on the back of recent letters to PubTAB operators outlining existing measures that have been put in place to assist in boosting operator viability and include productivity measures, self-serve terminals etc.

Fielke said he also planned to write an open letter to Victorian punters to keep them informed of the situation.

"We remain confident, that with cooperation of all parties, we will see a sustainable outcome achieved in the near future and we await with interest any proposed initiatives from TABCORP and Sky Channel to also progress a successful outcome for punters and PubTAB operators," Mr Fielke concluded.

Promising filly Edgeton earned a tilt at stakes level after a dashing win in the Grand Final Live On-Course Handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley today.

Trained at Bendigo by Brendon Hearps, Edgeton made it her fourth win from start number seven today.

Hearps said the filly had pleased him with her work in between runs after her last start win at Flemington.

"She is a nice filly," Hearps reported after the race. "Her work on Tuesday morning was sensational."

Edgeton, a chestnut filly by the former racetrack star Racer's Edge, was puchased out of the paddock by Hearps in a two horse package.

"I bought her with a horse called Secombe for $10,000 out of the paddock," Hearps added. "I bascially got her as I really wanted the other one (Secombe."

With accomplished heavyweight rider Brad Rawiller in the saddle Edgeton hit the ground running and was immediately sent to the front of the field. From that point she was always travelling within herself and she burst away from her rivals at the top of the straight to win easily.

At the post the chestnut filly held a four length break over the last start Seymour winner Jamrah, who is a full sister to the multiple Group One winner Dash for Cash.

Fairweather, who was away poorly, made up good ground to finish third, a further three lengths back.

The winner stopped the clock at 59.83 seconds and stewards immediately downgraded the track to a dead rating.

Hearps indicated the filly would be having her next start in the Group Three $100,750 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 12, before her ultimate aim in the Listed $101,000 Cadbury Roses Stakes (1200m) down the straight at Flemington on Oaks Day (November 7).

The AFL Football Grand final will be telecast live from over 40 screens at Moonee Valley this Saturday.

The match will also appear on the big screen but will be interrupted by MV and Randwick races during the day.

The Group One George Main Stakes will be run at Randwick and telecast live into the Valley. The race is a prelude to the Carlton Draught Cox Plate, with Sunline, Lohnro and Defier going head to head.

Punters at the Valley will have the choice of best odds, with bookmakers and the tote on course.

At acceptance time this morning MVRC had received 26 acceptors for the 2040 metre open handicap. The rail is out 7 metres for the meeting, so two divisions of 13 were made of the race, with a prize purse of $40,000 for each.

"The agreement to divide will assist owners and trainers as they prepare their horses through the Spring Carnival," said MVRC Chief Executive Paul Brettell.

Phillip "Stoked" Up About Squillani

r4squillani.jpg (13591 bytes)Talented Adelaide galloper Squillani is primed to win his second consecutive Melbourne race when he lines up in Saturday's $40,000 Blue Ribbon Day Welter (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

The Shagny gelding had his first jump out on the strathayr track during the week and his trainer Phillip Stokes was pleased with the gallop.

"He isn't the best track worker," Stokes told Cyberhorse. "But he seemed the handle the track well enough."

A stakes placed performer in Adelaide, Squillani gained much respect from the Melbourne public when he led throughout and showed plenty of fight to win the listed Teac Digital Stakes at Flemington earlier this month.

"That win took a bit out of him," Stokes said. "We'd planned on running him in the Dubai Racing Club Cup, but as it turned out that race turned out to be very strong."

Stokes said he had no worries about the horse being able to handle the extra 200 metres of Saturday's event.

"He placed in the (Port Adelaide) Guineas over 1800 metres in Adelaide (to Our Kazz)," Stokes noted. "So I am not worried with the 1600 metres."

r4squillani2.jpg (13975 bytes)"And that time over the 1800 metres, we went into the race up 400 metres, which was far from ideal."

Connections have not tried to plan too far ahead with the gutsy gelding but they have their eye on a feature race at Moonee Valley in a month's time.

"Should he handle Moonee Valley in race conditions then we will look at the Waterford Crystal Mile on Cox Plate Day," Stokes predicted.

Stokes is confident that Squillani will develop into a much better horse during the autumn and he is quietly hoping he could pick up some riches in Sydney.

"You'd like to think he could be competitve on Doncaster Day in Sydney," he said. "It doesn't matter what race you are in they are all worth plenty."

While disappointed he was unable to use the services of Danny Nikolic this weekend Stokes has found a suitable replacement in the form of Kerrin McEvoy.

"He is absolutely flying," Stokes said.

PICS - Quentin Lang.

Stewards Set to Order out Nostrovia

One of the state's most dashing hurdlers looks set to be scratched by stewards at Moonee Valley on Saturday because of a dislike of barriers.

Nostovia, who set up a huge break in the jumping race at Sandown last Saturday before being grabbed with a couple of strides, is an acceptor for the $60,500 Spring Quality Hurdle (3200m) on Saturday.

The gelding's trainer Gary Mallinson said stewards have indicated they will scratch the horse from the race after he failed a barrier test yesterday morning.

Stewards ordered the horse to be tested in the barrier after he caused a lengthy delay at Sandown last week.

"He's just a horse that won't enter the barrier with his rider on race days," Mallinson said.

"Had the rider done what he was told at Sandown he would have walked straight in."

Mallinson added the gelding would enter the barrier without problems at home during the week, but would take exception to this when tested in race or trial conditions.

"For some reason the jockey has to be on the horse when a barrier ticket is required," Mallinson reported.

Nostrovia will now be forced to miss this weekend's race with his trainer suggesting a Hurdle at the Cranbourne Cup Carnival next month will probably be his next start over the obstacles.

Saturday's Spring Quality Hurdle (3200m) will now have just nine runners including the proven jump performer Specular, Zabeel's Pride, Piermont and Calcavecchia.

Tuesday’s meeting at Moe could well have provided a few pointers to the lucrative Moe Cup on Saturday, October 26.

Impressive five length winner of the 2050 metre Open Handicap, Teerex appears headed for the Cup.

Trainer, David Noonan said he expected Teerex to run well, but the ease and margin of his win came as a surprise.

"The Moe Cup has been a long range plan for this horse and we’re still heading along those lines. He did it well today and that is where we would like to head with him," Noonan said.

The Bicentenary gelding has now had four wins and five placings from just 15 starts.

Moe chief executive, Brendan Blackshaw was also pleased to hear from Terry Henderson (part owner of runner-up, Old Tawny and Bairnsdale Cup winner Chiming Door) that although Old Tawny is headed for the Benalla Cup (October 6), Chiming Door was a likely starter at Moe.

MAKE A BID BREAKS THROUGH

Moe trainer, Gerry Sneyders provided the local win with Make a Bid, which was rewarded for some recent consistency. Prior to Tuesday’s win the horse had finished second at his home track and then third at Geelong.

Favorite Boy Canny Go, also trained at Moe, set a hectic pace which suited Make a Bid, who ran on well from back in the field.

The horse has been very competitive in his three recent runs and more wins could be in store.

ONE ELLE OF A GOOD WIN

0925mysticelle.jpg (15700 bytes)Racing was also staged at Sale on Friday and the feature event was won by the talented Mystic Elle, from the Tony Vasil stable. Part owner Danny Watson looks to have made another wise ownership investment.

Vasil stable foreman, Brian Balwin, said after the race at Sale that Danny is also a part owner of trotting superstar Safe and Sound.

From the first crop of Encosta de Lago, Mystic Elle took her record to five wins from 13 starts and over $100,000 in stakes and there looks to be plenty more in store.

Ridden by Luke Currie, the mare settled off the pace and ran home well in the straight.

Brian said "two starts ago she won in the city and then last start she was four wide the entire race. We expect her to go back to the city now".

DOUG'S GALLOPER RULES AT SALE

Doug Harrison looked to have unveiled a handy galloper at Sale on Friday in No More Rules, but the trainer explained the horse’s entry into the world came at a big cost.

"His mother (Ruling Card) died when foaling him, so he is the last of her six to race and all have won. She never raced herself but was one of our best stud mares," he said.

Doug said No More Rules had trialed reasonably and was expected to run well.

RED PRINCE IMPRESSES

Locally trained Red Prince improved on his impressive record at Sale’s with a strong win in the final event.

The four year-old gelding, prepared by Frank Doderico has now had six starts at Sale for two wins and two seconds.

Part owner, George Doderico, said "we thought he was a bit unlucky last start and went a bit too early. He was ridden a bit quieter today (by Luke Currie) and that proved the difference".

Part owner of Rich Finale, Rob Andrews, was thrilled when his long shot of the field won the 1100 metres fillies and mares.

"She never got a crack at them last start and when we drew barrier one today we thought she was a great chance."

He said despite the odds the win was no surprise. "A lot of people only look at the past few starts, but she has run second in a class four and was down to a class one today".

"I’ve only had her eight months. She bowed a tendon and I bought her and have given her plenty of time," said Andrews who added Roger Booth rode the horse perfectly.
