Baileys A Sure Thing at Oakbank

Father and son training team Alan and Trevor Bailey are set to mount another assault on Oakbank at Easter with Command The Wind and Speaker aimed at major flat events.

Command The Wind, a model of consistency, will run in Saturday's Even Stevens Handicap (2400m) at Caulfield as a precursor to the $62,600 Adelaide Bank Onkaparinga Cup (2150m) on April 21.

Trevor Bailey, who manages his father's Melbourne operation at Caulfield, said the Onkaparinga Cup was an ideal race for the five-year-old, who has rarely been out of the money since joining the stable last year.

Last weekend, Command The Wind finished third to Grey Song and Badger's Wood on the Lakeside track at Sandown after being narrowly beaten by Heist on the Hillside circuit there at his previous outing. He was a winner at Sandown in February over 2100m.

The Baileys have designs on completing a hat-trick of victories in the $62,600 Oakbank Stakes (1100m) with talented sprinting mare Speaker on Easter Saturday.

They produced Libidinious to win the Listed race last year after taking it out on their first foray into the Adelaide Hills with Point Danger in 2001.

"She flew in a jump out at home recently and we are keen for her to get some black type alongside her name," Bailey said.

Speaker hasn't started since winning in dominant fashion over 1005m at Werribee in early December. She has won six of her 15 starts, five of them on city tracks.

Never Promised, a recent acquisition from Sydney to the stable and a winner at Geelong last month, will join Command The Wind and Speaker on the float to South Australia. She will be aimed at the $25,400 AAMI Grey Handicap (1100m) on Easter Monday.

"The Oakbank people have been good to us and we've had a bit of luck there in the past so it will be good to go back again this year with a few horses," Bailey said.

Fellow Caulfield trainer Brendan McCarthy will pursue a start in the $25,400 Alcohol Go-Easy Handicap (1050m) with Fading, despite her below-par effort at Sandown on Wednesday.

"She likes hilly tracks and any jar out of the ground and her previous form had been quite good," McCarthy said.

Fading strung together a hat-trick of wins at Hanging Rock, Stony Creek and Colac between late January and early March.

Nominations for the Oakbank Easter Jumps Carnival close on April 10 (next Thursday) at 12 noon.

Kimba Set for Emotion Charged 90th and Final Race Day

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/17083--sp-1557782601.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=Ninety years of racing at Kimba will come to an end on Saturday when the club holds its final race... size=small}
Ninety years of racing at Kimba will come to an end on Saturday when the club holds its final race meeting at the town following a long and proud history of racing action in the region.

But the history and tradition of the Kimba Racing Club will not be lost in the future with the meeting being transferred to Port Lincoln from 2004 and beyond.

Ironically this weekend's Kimba race day will be the 90th held in the town since its first meeting in December 1913.

A meeting at the home of Mr Jack Haskett officially kicked away the history of the Kimba Racing Club on November 7, 1913. The first committee was formed with Ralph Hogan elected president and Charlie Sutton as secretary.

Just over a month later on December 29, Kimba was away and racing with an entertaining six event card. On the day a six furlong handicap, a hurdle races of a mile and a half, a hack race, a handicap of a mile and a quarter, a handicap trot of two miles and a consolation race (for non-placed runners) were run. Incredibly a number of the runners were starters in all of the races.

Also on the afternoon of the first meeting in 1913, the horses weren't the only ones put to the speed test. A number of foot races and novelty events were held for the men and women on track.

The Kelly Race Club, as it was known, continued on until the First World War when many of the committee became soldiers, before the club was renamed to the "Kelly Patriotic Races," and all proceeds were donated to the comfort funds.

After shifting to a venue closer to Kimba around 1926 and then another location in 1939, racing continued to prosper in Kimba and they then decided to move to the current location in 1949.

Over the 90 years of racing at Kimba many of the region's leading horseman have supported the meeting. Names like Whyte, Holland, McInnis, Humphries, Glenn, Bourke, Whitlock, Dempsey, McEvoy, Nadells and Hall have all contributed to the proud history of the club. These days the club has been blessed to be supported by trainers including Trevor Trenowden, Mick Whittle, Darryl Carrison, Herb Oats, Malcolm Hebberman and Ray Angelo.

This year's weekend kicks off with the annual "calcutta" at 7pm on Friday in the confines and comfort of the Kimba Community Hotel. Here's your chance to become an "owner" of a runner for a day and in the process win big dollars.

The club will hold its usual five race programme, which has attracted strong fields, on Saturday afternoon. Prior to and after the racing action horses of another discipline will entertain racegoers with the staging of the 'Yeltana Showjumping Championships.'

At the conclusion of the race meeting more entertainment is being programmed for the evening for those patrons who wish to stay on and celebrate the ninety years of racing in Kimba.

Be a part of history and help make Kimba's final race meeting at the town the best ever this Saturday.

One of the greatest Australian stayers Galilee will be honoured with a special ceremony at the Gawler Cup meeting in South Australia on Sunday.

The then four-year-old gave one of the country's hottest trainers at the time, Bart Cummings, his second ever Melbourne Cup winner when he won Australia's most famous race in 1966.

Not only was the success a great South Australian triumph for Cummings, the horse was also ridden by local hoop John (JJ) Miller and was locally owned.

After his death Galilee was buried at the Gawler Racecourse near the mounting enclosure. About a decade later Galilee's Melbourne Cup winning stablemate Gold and Black was buried alongside.

Gold and Black, the 1977 Melbourne Cup hero, has had a memorial at the Gawler track for a number of years.

At this Sunday's KFC/Basic Steel Supplies Gawler Cup meeting a memorial, which was recently placed near Galilee's grave, will be officially unveiled.

Members of the Bailey family, who raced the champion during his illustrious career which also netted Caulfield Cup, Sydney Cup, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Memsie Stakes, Turnbull Stakes and Toorak Handicap among 18 wins and ten minor placings from just 36 starts.

Burleigh Eyes Off a Second Birthday

The powerful Hawkes stable is hoping talented galloper Burleigh can celebrate a yearly "birthday" win at Cheltenham Park this Saturday in the Group 3 Birthday Cup (1600m).

Burleigh has started at the track just once a year for the past two years - winning both times at stakes level. In 2001, he won the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas as a three-year-old, while last year he took out the Birthday Cup.

He hasn't been back since but the stable is following the same path as last year - a first-up run in th Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington before a run in Saturday's event.

"Last year he ran a great race in the Blamey, finishing fifth to Tears Royal before winning this race," Hawkes' stable foreman David Pannell said. "He finished 14th in the Blamey this time around, but was beaten only three lengths. Given he was first-up over a mile, then run was pretty good.

"He arrived here late last week and I must say, he looks even better than he did the year before. He settled in well and hopefully he can win the event again."

Local jockey Wayne Kerford, who piloted the gelding to success last year, again has the ride.

"He's won three races on him - all three stakes races," Pannell said. "The horse goes well for him."

The stable has won the race twice, with Spring Thaw winning in 1991 before Burleigh last year. The last horse to win the race twice was veteran stayer Skybeau in 1999 and 2000.

C. Robertson, the rider of OUR STRIKE BREAKER (NZ), was questioned regarding his failure to take a run which became available inside EXALTED BEAU (M. Neilson) approaching the 300 metres. C. Robertson explained that he had elected to attempt to improve to the outside of EXALTED BEAU as he considered his best option was to make one run with the gelding. He added that after attempting that option he had been prevented from doing so by BUFFALO POWER (J. Holder), which had improved to his outside and had to wait to clear the heels of that gelding before placing his mount under pressure. Stewards advised C. Robertson that in future he should ensure he ride his mounts in a manner which would not invite enquiry.

RACE 3 : HONDA HANDICAP - 1800 metres

In the vicinity of the 600 metres BENARBER (D. Tootell) was inconvenienced and obliged to steady off the heels of STRIKING PLUME (C. Bryant) as a result of that gelding being taken out marginally by TOP KALA (K. Louca).

Acting on that advice, OAKWOOD was withdrawn by Stewards at 2.21 pm. Mr. D. Balfour, trainer of OAKWOOD, was advised that a repetition of the colt’s behaviour at the barriers could lead to action being taken against it.

Shortly after the start SADDIKI (W. Kerford) shifted out onto MOT D’OR (J. Holder) resulting in that gelding shifting away and tightening KINGSTON SEA (C. Lindop) onto WILD WILD WEST (T. Creek) resulting in both KINGSTON SEA and WILD WILD WEST being hampered.

Approaching the 900 metres LUCRATIVE DAME (P. Gatt), whilst being restrained, shifted out and brushed MOT D’OR (J. Holder).

Approaching the 300 metres LUCRATIVE DAME (P. Gatt), in attempting to improve, shifted out and contacted MOT D’OR (J. Holder), which rolled in.

For a short distance in the vicinity of the 300 metres ISLE OF GIBRALTAR (S. Price) was reluctant to shift away from the heels of ON FOCUS (J. Bowditch).

MISS MARTINDALE sustained a deep laceration to her near side knee. Mr. L. Macdonald, the trainer of MISS MARTINDALE, was informed that similar behaviour in future may lead to action being taken against it.

NONE FOR THE ROAD (J. O’Connor) was slow to jump and shortly after was inconvenienced by LOWENDALE ROAD (B. Claridge), which shifted out.

When questioned regarding his riding of NONE FOR THE ROAD in the early and middle stages of the event J. O’Connor explained that after being inconvenienced by LOWENDALE ROAD (B. Claridge) shortly after the start he had ridden his mount into the bit. He stated that in the vicinity of the 1000 metres he would have preferred to trail SQUILLANI (P. Gatt), however, because of his mount’s inclination to race keenly, was obliged instead to race outside SQUILLANI. He added that inside the 700 metres when SQUILLANI had been taken wide by SAVAGE ATTACK (J. Holder), he was then required to cover more ground than he would have preferred. Stewards advised J. O’Connor that his explanation would be noted.

Wittwer, representing Mr. A Trengrove, the trainer of SPUNKIE, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required prior to the filly being accepted for a future event.

RACE 8 : JAYCO HANDICAP - 1200 metres

KOODA HURRY was withdrawn by Stewards at 11.00 am, acting on confirmed advice from the gelding’s trainer that it was suffering a virus.

HUG A MUG (J. Lyon) jumped away awkwardly.

On jumping away SHACK WINDOW (S. Price) shifted in contacting TORMENTUS (C. Lindop).

Near the 900 metres, whilst being restrained off the heels of SEATTLE KEN (J. Maund), TAOS PLEASURE (S. Tronerud) was taken in brushing SHACK WINDOW (S. Price).

P. Gatt, the rider of REDJACK, explained that the gelding had travelled well in running until placed under pressure in the straight after which it had not responded to his riding. He stated that, in his opinion, REDJACK may have choked down. REDJACK was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and an endoscopic examination revealed the gelding to be suffering acute pharyngitis. Mr. M.A.T. Kavanagh, Trainer of the gelding, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for any future event.

Oakbank Gearing Up For Another Huge Easter

Saturday 19th March and Monday 21st April, 2003 marks the 128th running of the Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival, which is recognized as the world's greatest picnic race meeting.

The Melbourne Cup may be Australia's greatest horse race, but the Great Eastern Steeplechase (proudly sponsored by Carlton & United Breweries) at Oakbank is certainly the most colourful and spectacular. More than 100,000 fervent holidaymakers flock to the hamlet in the Adelaide Hills over the Easter weekend to watch the running of the marathon steeplechase at the famous track.

Oakbank, however, more than any other major Australian club, belongs not to its executive or even to its members. It belongs to the people of South Australia and to its regular visitors from interstate and overseas. And therein lies its secret, those regular Oakbankers belong to Oakbank, and Oakbank belongs to them, and while that marriage lasts, the future of Oakbank as the world's greatest picnic race meeting is in very good hands.

Campers have already started their pilgrimage to the Hills to begin setting up their tents, and the fun will begin in a carnival atmosphere, which rivals the English Derby week at Epsom. The same families have been making the Oakbank pilgrimage for years and it is not uncommon to find people who went with their fathers and mothers as youngsters 30, 40 or 50 years ago. Overseas visitors marvel at the magnitude of the carnival and share the racing public's fascination with the testing 4,950m Great Eastern, as well as the other jumping and flat events.

While racing takes pride of place at Oakbank on both Easter Saturday and the Monday, there are plenty of other attractions. Ferris Wheels, Merry-go-Rounds, Train Rides, Pony Rides, Stalls and food outlets with exotic foods from all countries and free face painters make this a circus Barnum and Bailey would have been proud of.

Between the races, hundreds of youngsters and older folk will play football on the track, have races and generally have fun. Yes indeed Oakbank at Easter has all the fun of the fair, added to which, the racing is great.

There is a once only charge of $15 (children under 16 free) to enter the course, with patrons able to use grandstand facilities and visit horse stalls and the parade ring at no extra charge. Patrons are welcome to bring eskies to the event, however they must not be taken into the grandstand area, and glass bottles and cans will not be permitted to be taken into or out of the grandstands or members enclosure.

For the 8th successive year Malaysia Airlines are offering 2 return tickets to London and the Adelaide Bank $500 towards accommodation and other costs to a lucky patron who submits the winning entry form on course. The holiday must be used by the 31st December 2003 and is not redeemable for cash or transferable. Yalumba Wines will supply another successful competitor with 7 assorted cases of their various products. The forms for the competition will be available thorough the race book and locations on-course.

Flat and jumping trails will be conducted on Monday 7th April and trials for jumping horses nominated for events at Oakbank will be conducted on Monday 14th April. Trails will commence at 9:30am and as a fund raiser for St Michaels Collage there will be a free sausage sizzle on both days.

Oakbank Secretary Barry Biggs sums up the Oakbank success nicely:

"Melbourne may have pinched the Grand Prix, but the Great Eastern Steeple meeting is just as big and we are the only country race club in Australasia to be given metropolitan status over the weekend. We are proud of this achievement."

Promising galloper Luna Scene will face her toughest test to date tomorrow when she confronts a rise in class and distance in the $70,300 Group Three Vinery Stud Adelaide Guineas (1600m) at Morphettville.

In form trainer Tony McEvoy said the exciting performer would require a supreme effort should she win the Adelaide feature and stakes his claims for some of the Adelaide Carnival riches.

"We're asking her to jump in the deep end here a bit," McEvoy said. "She's rising a lot in distance and also of course that is compounded by a stronger field on the weekend."

Luna Scene impressed seasoned racegoers with her impressive first up win at Cheltenham a fortnight ago in her first start since successful surgery.

"She had bone chips in both knees and her run the other day was her first since the operation," McEvoy noted.

A chestnut daughter of Langfuhr, Luna Scene is the topical tip in the Guineas, which is sponsored by leading Hunter Valley based breeding farm Vinery Stud.

She was bred and is part owned by the Vinery Syndicate fronted by Vinery's Australian boss Peter Orton. Her other part owners include Mark Pilkington's Lindsay Park Racing Syndicate, Ron Dufficy and the Vic Club 20 Syndicate, who've had great success in recent months with the Blue Diamond Stakes placegetter Halibery.

McEvoy has a nice opinion of Luna Scene, who has only been beaten once, when a 0.6 length fourth to Nul Autre at Caulfield.

"She's a really nice filly," McEvoy said. "This race is sure to give us a good guide to exactly where she is up to."

Luna Scene's rivals tomorrow include the likely favourite Lawson's Storm, the Nitschke Stakes runner up Mr Jazz Man and the Mick Whittle trained King's Arch.
