Trainer David Balfour expects talented galloper Lawson's Storm to put his best foot forward in Saturday's $70,300 Group 3 Vinery Stud Adelaide Guineas (1600m) at Morphettville.

After two superb runs back from a spell, albeit unplaced, the three-year-old is now ready to "get down to business" as the set weights three-year-old races toward the South Australian Derby begin.

Following Saturday's run, the gelding will be aimed at the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m), the Listed Veuve Clicquot Stakes (2000m) and the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) on May 10.

"His first-up run over 1000m was super, then he ran another good race when sixth at Cheltenham Park last start," Balfour said. "If they were going to beat him, his last run was when he was going to be vulnerable. He had a lot of weight under handicap conditions, was stepping straight to 1450m second-up and drew wide. It was an excellent run under the circumstances and meets a lot of the same horses much better at the weights this time."

Since finishing runner-up behind Dextrous in last year's Group 2 Sandown Guineas, Lawson's Storm has been on track for a tilt at the three-year-old staying classics over the Adelaide Cup carnival.

"He was a bit immature last time in but has furnished into a lovely horse," Balfour said. "He was always going to be at his best once he gets to a mile - so I expect him to be right on his game on Saturday. Morphettville is his track and now he's learned to settle I've no doubt he'll continue to improve as he gets further. Ultimately the Derby is his aim and he'll follow the traditional set-weights three-year-old path toward it."

Lawson's Storm has some excellent form around talented stakeswinner's Lashed, Hydrometer and Dextrous in both his two-year-old and early three-year-old campaigns.

The Lakewood Stud Port Adelaide Guineas is on Saturday April 12, the Veuve Clicquot Stakes is on May 3 while the Malaysia Airlines SA Derby is on May 10. All three races are at Morphettville.

Blinkers Off for Blue Blood in Walter Brown

r3tonymcevoy.jpg (11823 bytes)Leading trainer Tony McEvoy is hoping the removal of blinkers will be a winning move with the blue blooded filly La Boiselle as she heads into Saturday's $40,300 Vinery Stud Walter Brown Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

A record breaking yearling from last year's Ausrtalian Easter Yearling Sale where she was knocked down for a cool $1.5 million, the daughter of champion sire Danehill is still a maiden after two starts.

On debut the youngster led at Balaklava before being swamped over the concluding stages by the Hawkes prepared Diurnal. Punters sent out La Boiselle at $1.40.

A fortnight later at Murray Bridge punters stuck by the regally bred filly sending her out at $1.28 when she was beaten in a photo finish by the Craig Curtis trained Lady Knight.

McEvoy said today the filly had "trained on well" and connections had decided to remove blinkers, which she had worn at her previous two runs.

"We've taken the blinkers off for this start as she seemed to race a bit too aggressive with them on," McEvoy said.

Connections have been slightly disappointed with the race day efforts of La Boiselle at both Balaklava and Murray Bridge.

"Her race day efforts have been well below what she has done (in track work and trials) at Lindsay Park," the in form trainer reported.

A half sister to top class Group One winners Assertive Lad and Assertive Lass, La Boiselle has currently earned $2,100 on the track and her prominent owners are hoping she can chip away a large chunk of her purchase price and in doing so earn valuable black type, which would send her potential broodmare value higher.

La Boiselle isn't the only blue blooded Danehill filly in the field that will be running for McEvoy in the Walter Brown.

Isle of Gibraltar, a $310,000 yearling purchase for renowned bloodstock agent James Bester at Easter last year, is a three quarter sister to the champion international galloper Rock of Gibraltar.

McEvoy said he had a good opinion of the youngster, although he wasn't expecting her to be at her best until at least another year down the track.

"She was never bred to be a real two-year-old," McEvoy said. "But she's beautifully bred and I've been happy with her work to date."

The hardest for both fillies to beat appears on paper to be the last start stakes winning Leon Macdonald trained Mot D'or.

A son of Dieu D'or, Mot D'or finished out of a place in the Adelaide Magic Millions Classic before winning the listed Balcrest Stakes at his very next start.

Helipad Fundraiser a Success at Clare

The Clare Valley Race Club and the local community recently joined forces to launch a fundraiser to raise revenues to construct a helipad at The Clare Hospital. At present the emergency helicopter to have a medivac from Clare cannot land at the hospital but at the local town oval 1km away.

This extra movement of the patient is obviously life threatening and with 3 local fatalities in the last 3 months the awareness of the project is high therefore the fundraiser has the full support of the local media, service groups, Council and small business.

To assist with the project The Clare Valley Race Club conducted the fundraiser evening on the night prior to its Sunday Race Meeting on March 16th 2003. The evening featured The 5AA Allstars, Terry McAuliffe as MC, guest speakers Derrick McManus, John Letts and Dr Bill Griggs plus VIPs including the Mayor and Council CEO. The event was a sell out with over 300 crammed into The Town Hall and with a waiting list of 70 very disappointed people.

The major sponsor of the fundraiser and the race day was Clare Valley Toyota with tremendous support from local wineries with over 100 bottles of premium wine donated for sale on the night.

The night raised over $11,000 for the Helipad project and a great time was had by all. The only down side to the promotion was the disappointment from the much larger than normal crowd who had all followed the tipping of The Punters Pal from the previous night John Letts where he declared Billy Rascal would win. The announcement on course by Terry McAuliffe that Lettsy would pay out all losing bets in stall 30 did not help the popular trainer at all.

RACE 2 - JASOL BEER HYGIENE CLASS 5 HANDICAP - 1300 metres Cont’d

Correct Weight for this event was delayed in being semaphored to allow J. O’Connor, rider of the fourth placegetter, to view the official Stewards’ head-on patrol film of the finish. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, he lodged an objection against BY INVITATION ONLY (S. Price) being declared the second placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference at the 200 metres and again over the final 100 metres. After taking evidence from all parties, on viewing the official patrol film of the race and acting on their own observations, Stewards dismissed J. O’Connor’s objection.

NORTH CORNER (J. O’Connor) was slow to begin.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres RATIONS (J. Lyon) shifted out slightly onto BY INVITATION ONLY (S. Price) at the same time as NORTH CORNER (J. O’Connor) shifted in slightly. As a result BY INVITATION ONLY and NORTH CORNER bumped.

0318loch.jpg (12058 bytes)The South Australian Racing industry dug deep for the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia last weekend with some of it's personnel participating in the "World's Greatest Shave For A Cure".

Jockeys Jason Holder, Wayne Kerford, Joe Bowditch, David Carney, Jeff Maund, Paul Gatt, Ben Claridge and Nozi Tomizawa, trainer David Pannell, Thoroughbred Racing SA Racing Department's Craig Kutcher, Rhett Cook and Jason Hickson, Sky Channel's Scott Edgecombe and The Advertiser journalist Matt Clemow, along with the prized "scalp" of TRSA Chairman of Stewards Mr Graham Loch, went under the blade to raise money to find a cure for Childhood Leukaemia.

Mr Loch put a price of $5000 on his head, (pictured getting a close shave from leading rider Joe Bowditch) which was easily reached by the jockeys, and leading rider Joe Bowditch paid an extra $300 just for the honour of lopping off Loch's locks. In total the participants raised just short of $10,000.

Many thanks go to the jockeys and Mr Loch for their support, as well as those who generously donated to the cause.
