RACE NINE OPEN HCP – 13OO M

At acceptance time Mr B Merrall, owner of I DO THEE WED requested permission for dual license holder G Clarke to ride the gelding.  Mr Merrall stated that he was left without a rider at the last minute when W Orbell who he had engaged had also accepted the ride on ROCKHOUND which he was duty bound to fulfil.  Due to the lateness of him being notified he was unable to get another rider for I DO THEE WED.  Due to the exceptional circumstances, stewards granted permission for G Clarke to ride I DO THEE WED despite him being the trainer of GOTHAM RULER which was also engaged in the race.  W Orbell was reprimanded for accepting two rides in the same race and was notified that if he was to do so in future he may be penalised.

Stewards questioned T Perry, rider of MURPHY’S LAW which performed better today than its recent form suggested.  T Perry stated that the gelding races best when it leads and at its recent starts the pace had been too much in the early stages for the gelding to get to the front.   However at its last start she drew wide and although could have got closer to the lead elected not to race wide to do so.  She further stated that when the gelding campaigned in the west the opposition was not as strong and MURPHY’S LAW was able to lead easily.

Stewards questioned G Clarke, rider of I DO THEE WED which performed poorly.  G Clarke stated that the gelding felt comfortable in the early stages but he was forced to race wide rounding the turn and I DO THEE WED failed to improve at any stage.

Stewards questioned Mr B Merrall, stable foreman in charge of I DO THEE WED about that gelding’s disappointing performance.  Mr Merrall stated that he expected I DO THEE WED to win today and was very disappointed with its performance.  Mr Merrall stated that I DO THEE WED pulled up in a distressed state which may have been some excuse and also today the gelding was back in the field and may not have appreciated the sand being thrown up.  Other than this he could offer no explanation.

Swab samples were taken from the winner and second placegetter.

D Coffey (a), rider of FREEDOM FUNDS was found guilty of a charge of careless riding (ARR137 (a)).  The careless riding being that approaching the 1000 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of ARINNA taking that mare in onto BE STRONG resulting in ARINNA having to be checked and BE STRONG being hampered.  D Coffey was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire at midnight on Saturday 13th December, 2003.  As QUEEN OF THE NORTH was unable to be placed in the barriers, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the mare at 3.30pm.

Subsequent to the event stewards ordered all monies wagered on QUEEN OF THE NORTH to be refunded and the following betting deductions.  All monies wagered prior to the withdrawal of QUEEN OF THE NORTH to be paid as follows:- for the win, face value of the ticket less 16 cents in the dollar. For the place, face value of the ticket less 18 cents in the dollar.

Ms A White, trainer of QUEEN OF THE NORTH was advised that a warning will be issued against the filly and if it was to perform in a similar manner in future, some action may be taken.  Ms A White trainer of BE STRONG notified the stewards that the gelding pulled up distressed and was tied up in all legs.

D Coffey, rider of VIDAL was fined $100 for accepting a ride for which he was subsequently overweight (AR120(b)).

Mr D Park, trainer of SHODIYM claimed to the stewards that jockey C Moon had accepted the ride on his horse and then notified him the following day that he had accepted the ride on CLEOPATRA’S NEEDLE and would not be riding SHODIYM.  After taking evidence from both Mr Park and C Moon stewards deemed that C Moon should fulfil his engagement on CLEOPATRA’S NEEDLE and accordingly scratched SHODIYM at 1.36pm.

RACE TWO CLASS 5 HCP – 12OO M

When the starter effected the start of the race the gates of TOTAL RUSH (NZ) and SWAMP THING failed to open at the same time as the rest of the field. The starter then called a false start. Some of the riders, but not all, were aware that it was a false start and attempted to ease their mounts down.

After returning to the mounting yard all runners were inspected by the club’s veterinary surgeon. The club’s veterinary surgeon reported that in his opinion ACELA and MR FROWN, which had galloped a considerable distance, would not be fit to race within a short period. Stewards took into account the distance that the majority of the field had galloped and considering today’s weather conditions believed that it would not be advisable to expect those runners which had galloped some distance to race again today. Therefore acting under AR139 stewards declared the race void.

You wouldn't have to be a tipping genius to know leading Darwin trainer Stephen Brown will end Saturday with a trifecta at his home track of Fannie Bay.

Brown is the trainer of all the six entries for the Three-Year-Old Class B Handicap over 1000 metres.

Not This Time, No Tricks, Azaris, Chemical Heart, Craft Club and Oh Oh - make up the field and incredibly they are all stablemates.

Interestingly Brown only has two other runners at the five race card - both in separate races.

The trainer made his name in the Melbourne press last weekend when Joel Hallam - the young apprentice he has developed over the past two seasons in the Top End - won on Carlton Spirit for Tony McEvoy at Caulfield.

1st PALACE LAD
2nd ACELA

In reaching a decision, stewards took into account that near the 400 metres PALACE LAD was tightened for room between ACELA and SYLVAN GREEN due to both horses shifting ground. In relation to the incident near the 350 metres the stewards deemed that the interference caused to PALACE LAD was entirely attributable to ACELA and had the interference not occurred PALACE LAD would have beaten ACELA.

When the gates opened ACELA both bounded in the air.

S Leckey (a) was fined $50 for mounting CLEOPATRA’S NEEDLE with his skull cap not properly affixed (AR 87).

Rounding the home turn BE STRONG was held up for a clear run.
