RACE 1: MAIDEN HANDICAP - 1000 METRES

As Jockey K. Mahoney was delayed en route to the course owing to a transport breakdown, C. Montague was substituted as the rider of DIRTY COWBOY.

DIRTY COWBOY began awkwardly, shifted out onto the heels of LADY CARLA and lost ground.

Approaching the 850 metres MAGLI was severely crowded by DARBEAR (A. Gillett), which shifted in, resulting in BLEIGHSBOY being badly checked. A.Gillett was found guilty of a charge of careless riding (AR.137(a)) and was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on 31st August 2002, up to and including 13th September 2002 (3 NQ meetings - 9 SEQRA meetings).

On two occasions near the 500 metres BLEIGHSBOY bumped with MAGLI, which shifted in marginally.

At an inquiry into the reason for JADE STREET (S. Watkin) being severely checked at the 250 metres it was established that approaching the 250 metres A. Gillett (DARBEAR) permitted his mount to shift out and that simultaneously SNAIL GARY (G. Colless) shifted in whilst being ridden along, resulting in JADE STREET being checked severely. FRONTIER FIGHTER, which was trailing JADE STREET, was also obliged to check off that horse's heels. Stewards considered that an equal shift by A.Gillett and G. Colless had contributed to the incident. In the circumstances both riders were severely reprimanded.

Trainer Mr G. White reported that on returning to the day stalls at the completion of the event JADE STREET bled. Accordingly, JADE STREET was automatically barred from competing in races for 3 months (AR.53A).

A post-race veterinary examination of SNAIL GARY revealed that the gelding had sustained a small laceration to the near hind coronet band and a minor tear of the offside hind hoof. The veterinary surgeon reported also that SNAIL GARY had pulled up shin sore and that he had treated the horse accordingly. Connections were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided prior to SNAIL GARY being permitted to race again.

RACE 2: CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1000 METRES

PEE JAY BLUE was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start IMPERIAL AGENT commenced to race erratically, hung in, struck the running rail and lost considerable ground. Jockey T. Maeda reported that the bridle of IMPERIAL AGENT had slipped back over the horse's head, placing him at a severe disadvantage for the remainder of the race. After taking evidence from trainer Mr B. Anderson and T. Maeda stewards took no direct action other than to note the circumstances.

Over the concluding stages ABUZZ hung in, obliging its rider, J. Stopps, to stop riding and straighten his mount.

RACE 3: CLASS 4 THREE-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP - 1000 METRES

Trainer Mr J. Dixon was reprimanded for presenting BENTLEY DREAM without a tongue tie, part of the filly's approved gear (AR.140B).

When the gates opened HANNAH'S GOLD jumped outwards, resulting in FEELIN FRISKY and BROTHER BRADY being taken out abruptly. In consequence, WHO'S FRISKY had to be severely checked off the heels of BROTHER BRADY, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of REAL ASSET.

Shortly after the start GREYTIME commenced to buck and lost considerable ground. Trainer Mr R. Chillemi was advised that GREYTIME must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before being permitted to race again.

At the 600 metres FAULTY FUSE (P. Cullen) shifted in and tightened BROTHER BRADY, resulting in BENTLEY DREAM having to be steadied off the heels of that gelding. P. Cullen was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

Near the 350 metres WHO'S FRISKY was held up and unable to improve, had to be checked off heels and in consequence shifted out abruptly and hampered AVA BLAZE.

RACE 4: CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1200 METRES

When the start was effected COOLANGATTA slipped behind and lost ground. BEATING THE BLUES was slow to begin.

Making the first turn ZAAJER hung in and made contact with DOCTOR SILVESTER. GRISMA, which was trailing, had to be steadied away from the heels of DOCTOR SILVESTER.

Approaching the 600 metres EXCLUSIVE SON got its head up and overraced.

Making the home turn GRISMA (D. Andrews) shifted in, taking EXCLUSIVE SON in onto BEATING THE BLUES, which had to be steadied. D. Andrews was cautioned and advised to take more care.

On straightening GRISMA commenced to lay in and on a number of occasions in the straight made contact with EXCLUSIVE SON. Then approaching the 100 metres EXCLUSIVE SON (A. Cox) shifted out and made heavy contact with GRISMA, which became unbalanced and had to be checked. At the same time GRISMA received pressure from BEATING THE BLUES (P. Cullen), which also shifted in. P. Cullen and A. Cox were reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten their mounts. D. Andrews was also reprimanded for allowing GRISMA to lay in on EXCLUSIVE SON in the early part of the straight (AR.137(A)).

RACE 5: CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1960 METRES

IMTENT was a late withdrawal, at 9.10am, for veterinary reasons. IMTENT was examined by the Club veterinary surgeon, who confirmed that the gelding had swelling on the near fore knee.

When the gates opened MISS MADRID and SWELL BOY bumped.

Approaching the winning post the first time MOLLIE got its head up and raced ungenerously when being restrained to obtain cover. Shortly after this MOLLIE again threw its head in the air and raced ungenerously, and continued to do so until after the crossing.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion ABBOTT HOUSE (Apprentice L. Abbott) commenced to pull fiercely and shifted in, carrying QUICK HELLO (D. Crossland) in onto JESSIE THE CROONER, which was checked. When Apprentice Abbott attempted to relieve the tightening she was unable to do so, as MARTIAL AIR (D. Bradbery) had shifted in to race on her outside. In the circumstances stewards advised Apprentice Abbott and D. Bradbery that in similar circumstances they would be expected to allow runners on their inside sufficient racing room.

RACE 6: CLASS 6 HANDICAP - 1400 METRES

Gillett was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in marginally (AR.137(A)). When assessing penalty stewards took into account some mitigating factors.

Making the home turn APPLEBY ran wide and lost ground.

At the 200 metres VARMINT (I. Toward) shifted out to improve and made heavy contact with FUME. I. Toward was reprimanded for shifting ground when not sufficiently clear (AR.137(a)). Shortly after this incident VARMINT blundered.

RACE 7: OPEN HANDICAP - 1200 METRES

After the 1000 metres GLENELLA LAD was steadied off the heels of FOREIGN MONARCH.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by P. Cullen, the rider of GOLD KARAM, which finished fifth, against MONARBER (K. Mahoney) being declared third, alleging interference approaching the 300 metres. After taking evidence from all parties and considering their own observations stewards found that approaching the 300 metres MONARBER shifted out when not sufficiently clear of GOLD KARAM, which had to be checked. Taking into account the margin of three-quarters of a length between the two runners at the finish, stewards upheld the protest and amended the placings to read: MIGHTY SPY first; HARLEY second; GLENELLA LAD third; GOLD KARAM fourth; and MONARBER fifth. Subsequently K. Mahoney was found guilty of a charge of careless riding (AR.137(a)), in that at the 300 metres he shifted ground when not clear of GOLD KARAM, which had to be checked. K. Mahoney was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on 31st August 2002, up to and including 7th September 2002 (2 meetings).

After the finishing line P. Cullen had to severely check GOLD KARAM when GLENELLA LAD (S. Simon) shifted ground. S. Simon was advised to exercise more care when pulling up in future.

When questioned, G. Colless stated that ROMBERG, which had raced disappointingly, was off the bit from shortly after the start and never travelled well throughout the event.

Trainer Mr R. McLachlan reported that SAN TELMO had cast an off hind plate in running and had also returned to scale with a laceration to the off fore shin and lacerations to both hind fetlocks.

Prior to the event FIXED PATH, which had aggravated an old skin wound to the neck, was examined by the Club veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

Shortly after the start CARBONIZE and FIXED PATH were taken out across the heels of KULANGO by ICE VAIN, which shifted out.

Shortly after the start BOLD COMBINATION, which began awkwardly, was hampered and crowded for room when racing between MIGHTY CREATION and KLOCCO, both of which shifted ground slightly.

At the 750 metres BOLD COMBINATION had to be eased off the heels of TOOBANNA.

Approaching the 250 metres MIGHTY CREATION struck the running rail and lost considerable ground when its rider, Apprentice T. Maeda, attempted to obtain a run where, in the opinion of the stewards, there was insufficient room. Apprentice Maeda was severely reprimanded.

Stewards inquired into the reason for No.8 (CHICORY) being incorrectly displayed by the Judge on the semaphore board as the 4th placegetter in the numbers 4 - 5 - 7 - 8 - 13. Correct weight was subsequently given on those numbers. Judge L. Grimmett stated whilst being aware that No.6 (DAWN GLANCES) had run 4th, he had inadvertently displayed No.8 on the board, and this had only become apparent to him when completing the finishing positions of all runners in the race. Jockey S.Watkin was given the benefit of the doubt but nonetheless was advised that he endeavour to ride in races in a manner that doesn't leave himself open to query.
