0922venuswashername.jpg (17152 bytes)High class mare Venus Was Her Name will be chasing a black type success over the spring carnival after an impressive second up win in the Dubai Racing Club Plate (1400m) at Caulfield today.

A daughter of Spectacular Love, Venus Was Her Name settled a little worse than midfield early before switching to the outside of the field and finishing too well for her rivals.

Having already performed with distinction in some of New Zealand's feature filly events the mare was purchased by the Sangster family's Swettenham Stud Syndicate.

Michael Moroney, who had been training the filly in New Zealand, kept control of the classy performer when she was shipped to Australia to continue her racing.

0922adamsangster.jpg (13500 bytes)Today's win was the first time in five starts in Australia that she had finished in the money.

"She'd had a long preparation in New Zealand before she came across," Moroney said. "She was probably a bit tired."

With a good break and a handy first up effort recently at Sandown the mare was primed to return to her best this afternoon.

The mare's win was very impressive considering she covered her final 600 metres of the race in a slick 33.96 seconds, a touch more than half a second better than the overall race's sectional.

0922venuswashername2.jpg (12509 bytes)Moroney, who is hoping for further success this afternoon with another nine runners set to start, said Venus Was Her Name would improve on today's performance.

"She is going to get better as the distances increase," Moroney said. "There are some nice mares races coming up over the carnival and the 2000 metre event on the final day of the carnival looks ideal for her."

Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy said after the race that the winner would be further suited over longer distance.

Over the concluding stages Venus Was Her Name proved too classy for her rivals winning by three quarters of a length from Sydney stakes performer Sophistocat, who snared second in a photo finish over Visage.

0922northerly.jpg (13537 bytes)Champion West Australian galloper Northerly is set to return to Caulfield for the Group One Caulfield Cup (2400m) after his fighting win in this afternoon's Underwood Stakes.

Today's win in the race gave the star six-year-old back to back wins in the Group One weight-for-age event after he won the same race twelve months earlier.

There were some anxious moments in the run, but like he has during much of his career the champion qualities shone through as he held out the challenges of the Bart Cummings trained Magical Miss.

0922northerly2.jpg (20480 bytes)Winning trainer Fred Kersely indicated he would head toward the Caulfield Cup, although a firm commitment on a rider was far from resolved.

Greg Childs extended his unbeaten run on the son of Serheed to four, while multiple Scobie Breasley medallist Damien Oliver has been a regular in the saddle of the WA star.

"I guess Greg and Damien might have to sit down and have a talk about it," Kersley said with a smile.

Again Kersley was searching for superlatives for the horse which shot the jockey sized harness star into the spotlight of the thoroughbred scene.

0922northerly3.jpg (11941 bytes)"I thought she was going to get him," Kersley said referring to the challenge issued by the Bart Cummings trained Magical Miss in the home straight.

"But again he found a way to win," he added.

At the post Northerly held a head advantage over Magical Miss, while Don Eduardo made up good ground to finish third, a further four lengths back.

Greg Childs was also full of praise for Northerly after the gutsy win.

"He is a great horse," Childs said. "I'm just pleased to be able to ride the two best horses (Northerly and Sunline) in Australasia."

Bart Cummings said he was still unsure as to whether he would head to the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate.

0922northerly4.jpg (17012 bytes)"It all depends on what horses run in the Cox Plate of course," the Cups king said. "It's a nice race (the Cox Plate) and I'd love to win it."

Connections of the third placed Don Eduardo were pleased with his improved effort in today's event.

"It was a much better effort," jockey Damien Oliver said. "He got a bit of a squeeze but still picked up."

Trainer Lee Freedman reported that the well bred entire would head to the Caulfield Cup, via the Group Two Turnbull Stakes which will be run at Flemington in two weeks time.

In recent years when veteran Adelaide trainer Len Smith has been seen on a Melbourne track the veteran stayer Skybeau has been close by his side.

On Sunday the Cheltenham based horseman will be one of the many trainers hunting significant prizemoney on a spectacular day of racing at Caulfield, but Skybeau will be hundreds of kilometres away.

Smith will be accompanied to "the Heath" by his new stable star, Bisha Mon – who is South Australia’s most in form galloper with five straight wins.

Bisha Mon, a son of the international siring success Last Tycoon, has had his share of problems during his short, yet illustrious career to date.

Smith told Cyberhorse that the five-year-old has already had two operations, and the horse had shown great ability and character to come back each time.

"He’s been doing a terrific job here in Adelaide," Smith said. "Since he’s been back this time in work he’s won three from three."

Following his first city success at Cheltenham in October last year, connections were left wondering what might have been when it was discovered the gelding would require a second operation.

"He chipped a bone in a knee last year," Smith said. "And that was the second bone he’d chipped after earlier on he did the same thing with the other front leg."

Despite having trained horses for many decades, the Group One winning horseman said he had reservations about the gelding being able to come back to the track successfully.

"I’ve never had a horse do this twice in different legs and then come back like this bloke has," Smith said. "He’s obviously a very smart little horse."

On Sunday the lightly raced Bisha Mon will be attempting six straight wins in the $50,000 Dubai Shopping Festival Plate (1200m) in his first run in Melbourne.

"I’m thinking he is obviously going to be very competitive," Smith reported. "He’s trained on beautifully and has a nice barrier."

After first attempting to gain the services of brilliant Melbourne based jockey Damien Oliver, Smith booked leading Sydney hoop Chris Munce to ride the gelding.

"I rang Damien’s manager and he said he’d already had a ride, but he said Chris was coming down from Sydney," he said. "I’ve had some success with Chris in the past, so I was pleased to be able to get him to ride."

Should Bisha Mon prove his worth in Sunday’s competitive last race he will again be set for a race in Melbourne.

"If he runs well then we would run him in the 1200 metre race on Melbourne Cup Day," Smith said referring to the $81,000 Welter to be run at Flemington on November 5.

While one of the country’s most popular stayers Skybeau, who is now enjoying a life in equestrian circles, Smith is hoping his new stable star can emulate his former star by winning in Melbourne.

Pernod Tops off Pair's Huge Day

0922pernod.jpg (14879 bytes)Classy mare Pernod has continued the winning roll of trainer Michael Moroney and jockey Kerrin McEvoy when she ran down Bel Esprit in a thrilling Group One Dubai Racing Club Cup (1400m) at Caulfield today.

After getting back in the field today the daughter of Centaine swtiched to the better going on the outside of the track and then stormed home to down the favourite Bel Esprit, who suffered his second defeat in eight days.

For McEvoy it was winner number four, while Moroney registered a treble with the Group One success.

"What can you say it's been a big day," Moroney said moments after the win.

"She's a top quality mare and for a long time I have thought she was right up to the best and thankfully she proved that today."

0922pernod2.jpg (11937 bytes)To the cheers of her joyous syndicate Pernod carved out super quick final sectionals to run down Bel Esprit who was being hailed the winner after kicking clear shortly after straightening.

"I wasn't sure she was going to catch him when he skipped a couple (lengths) in front," Moroney added.

"But she has an exceptional final sprint and she was able to grab him late which was great."

Moroney had registered earlier wins with the Sangster owned Venus Was Her Name and the regally bred Taimana, while McEvoy rode those two winners as well as the Group Three Guineas Prelude victor Great Glen.

"You can't ask for much more," a jubilant McEvoy said while displaying four fingers for photographers.

"She's been a great mare to me and it's a huge thrill to win a Group One."

Bel Esprit's trainer John Symons said he was pleased with the effort of his classy colt, who was three quarters of a length from the winner who was rapidly peeling away at the finish.

0922kmcevoy3.jpg (15640 bytes)"It was a really good run," Symons said. "It's just a pity he wasn't able to come back under Damien a little better."

Oliver, who dumped the unplaced Chong Tong to ride the son of Royal Academy, told Symons that things didn't quite to plan during the second half of the race.

"Damien said the leader (Tit for Taat) left him in front too early and he was basically a sitting duck."

Royal Code lost few admirers with his strong third, a further neck back from Bel Esprit. He didn't have a great deal of galloping room and hit the line in good style.

His trainer David Hall said despite being in the current field for the Group One Epsom Handicap in Sydney he would keep the gelding in Melbourne for the Toorak Handicap.

0922greatglen.jpg (16384 bytes)Great Glen is on track for the Group One Caulfield Guineas after a stunning all the way win in this afternoon's Group Three Guineas Prelude at Caulfield.

A member of the Leon Macdonald stables, Great Glen was sent out at big odds in today's event after missing a place at Flemington recently.

"His last run really wasn't that bad," Macdonald's stable foreman Andrew Noblet said.

0922greatglen2.jpg (13077 bytes)"He raced too keen and was out running into a strong wind," he added.

Noblet said the son of Regal Classic, already a Group winner in Adelaide, would progress to the Group One Caulfield Guineas over 1600 metres.

"There's no real reason he won't get the 1600 metres of the Guineas," Noblet predicted.

Great Glen, who was ridden by an in form Kerrin McEvoy, was named after a picturesque European region after his breeder Des Pope sat down to watch some television.

"I was watching an episode of National Geographic one night and there was a program on about Scotland and this area called Great Glen," Pope said.

0922kmcevoy2.jpg (15207 bytes)"It was a really nice place and I thought it would be a nice name for a horse," he added with a smile.

The win also erased a touch of disappointment for Pope, who bred and races the previous race beaten favourite Innovation Girl.

After racing wide throughout the classy daughter of Rubiton tried hard before finishing a close up fifth behind La Bella Dame.

Lethal Leigh Set to Land Killer Punch

{SCPinterestShare href=https://form.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/victoria/449--sp-218021757.html layout=standard image=https://form.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/victoria.gif desc=Despite being pitted against proven Group One winners John Hawkes, Mike Moroney and Tony Vasil, little known country trainer Vanda... size=small}
Despite being pitted against proven Group One winners John Hawkes, Mike Moroney and Tony Vasil, little known country trainer Vanda Wales won't be intimidated at Caulfield on Sunday - and neither should she!

While most of the attention will be centred around the star performers Northerly, Bel Esprit, Magical Miss and Innovation Girl, one of Victoria's most exciting young performers, Lethal Leigh, will also be galloping for a share of the prizemoney on a huge day of racing.

Lethal Leigh is to Wales what Northerly is to Kersley and Bel Esprit is to Symons. In fact - that's probably not quite right. This young son of Prince of Birds has been a member of the "family" right from day one.

Wales raced Lethal Leigh's dam Sweet Pippa, who was a daughter of Let's Get Physical, who in turn is out of a stakes placed daughter of the champion stayer Rain Lover.

"She (Sweet Pippa) won four races and that would have been five but she lost one on protest," Wales said. "Although she was bred to get further she only won about the 1200 metre range."

It is those points that Wales, who's stable at present totals three, thinks Lethal Leigh can get to at least a mile (1600m) in the future.

A lightly raced son of Prince of Birds, Lethal Leigh will be having just his sixth start on Saturday, and connections are hoping it will be win number four.

The Lethal Leigh story is an interesting one to say the least. And his "lethal" tag was been with him since day one.

"I remember when he was a foal and I was looking after him he would kick and bite and generally be a real handful," Wales said. "I nicknamed his Leigh and I guess Lethal stuck from his early problems."

"Luckily we gelded him early on and since then he has quietened down quite a bit and he's actually now the best behaved horse in the stable," she added.

From an "obnoxious" foal, Lethal Leigh has developed into one of the state's most exciting gallopers and the pride of the tight knit Wales stable.

Right from his first gallop, Wales was aware she had found a horse with above average ability.

"He's always shown us plenty of ability," she said. "And the first time we gave him some pace work he had the feel of a good horse."

At start number one Lethal Leigh showed his natural ability when he ran second on debut in a Sale maiden, when his trainer confessed he was underdone.

"There weren't that many trials around at the time and ideally I would have liked to have given him another one before actually starting in a race. In the race he was very green and he ran second at big odds."

From a humble second at Sale, the gelding was sent straight to the "big smoke" and after sitting back midfield throughout he swept on the leaders in the straight before drawing clear for an impressive victory.

"It was a great thrill to win with his second start at Sandown," Wales recalled. "He gave me my first city winner."

Proving his initial city race success was no fluke Lethal Leigh was sent to Moonee Valley when he dealt with the Group winner Raja Lane in dashing style.

He then had no luck when given a test in a hot field in the listed Straight Six, a race won by the well bred and talented race mare Princesa.

"He went home after that race and we found he had a high temperature and things weren't right that day. He wasn't his normal self," she recalled.

Wales sent the gelding out for an immediate rest and he displayed he'd derived great benefit from the spell with a strong win first up at Sandown earlier this month.

The opposition may be a lot stronger at Caulfield on Sunday and he may be racing at a track he's never seen, but Lethal Leigh is expected to prove one of the horses to beat in the "lucky last."

While most connections would be concerned if their representative draws a wide barrier in any sprinting event, Wales feels barrier fourteen could actually be a blessing in disguise.

"It (the outside draw) might actually be in his favour," Wales said. "It's the last race and with the conditions the way they are at the moment the inside might not be the place to be."

"It's a much tougher race than I thought it would be," Wales revealed. "There's plenty of quality in the field with horses like Feel the Noise, who we beat the only time we've met, and Bisha Mon, who has put on a string of wins (in Adelaide)."

Wales, who bred, reared, owns and trains the chestnut galloper, is using Sunday's race as a guide as to where Lethal Leigh will be heading over the next couple of months.

"We'll just take one step at a time," she said.
